[1:21] Speaker 1: The birth of Jesus.
[1:24] Speaker 3: In our last story, we saw that after an over
[1:27] Speaker 3: 400-year period of silence, John is born to the elderly
[1:32] Speaker 3: Zechariah and Elizabeth. He will be known as John the Baptist,
[1:37] Speaker 3: and his role is to prepare people for Jesus. In
[1:41] Speaker 3: this story, we will learn about the birth of the Messiah,
[1:45] Speaker 3: Jesus Christ, as promised by God, inspired by the Gospels.
[1:54] Speaker 1: Hi there, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress
[1:58] Speaker 1: Sadler with the Kids Bible in a Year podcast. I
[2:01] Speaker 1: am so happy you're here. Today's story is a familiar one,
[2:05] Speaker 1: but we get to celebrate it in a whole new way.
[2:08] Speaker 1: So shake your jingle bells no matter what month it is,
[2:11] Speaker 1: and let's jump in.
[2:14] Speaker 3: After Mary finished visiting Elizabeth, she returned to Nazareth where Joseph,
[2:19] Speaker 3: her husband-to-be, was waiting for her. At this point, it
[2:23] Speaker 3: was clear that Mary was going to have a baby,
[2:25] Speaker 3: and because Joseph was a godly man, he knew that
[2:29] Speaker 3: child wasn't his. So when he saw Mary, he was
[2:33] Speaker 3: surprised and upset, but he didn't want to disgrace her
[2:37] Speaker 3: in public, so he wanted to break up quietly. One night,
[2:42] Speaker 3: an angel of the Lord visited Joseph in a dream
[2:44] Speaker 3: and said, Joseph, don't be afraid to make Mary your wife.
[2:49] Speaker 3: The child in her is from the Holy Spirit. When
[2:53] Speaker 3: the child is born, you will name him Jesus, because
[2:57] Speaker 3: he is the Savior who will save Israel from their sins.
[3:01] Speaker 3: When Joseph woke up, he obeyed the angel and married Mary.
[3:06] Speaker 3: Since Israel was under Roman rule, the Emperor Augustus required
[3:11] Speaker 3: that everyone needed to go back to where they were
[3:13] Speaker 3: born to register for the census. Joseph was actually born
[3:19] Speaker 3: in Bethlehem. So when they heard that the Romans wanted
[3:22] Speaker 3: them to do this, both Mary and Joseph left Nazareth
[3:26] Speaker 3: to go to Jerusalem. A very short time after they
[3:30] Speaker 3: got to Bethlehem, it was time for Mary to give birth.
[3:33] Speaker 3: But since there were no rooms available at the inn,
[3:36] Speaker 3: she gave birth to Jesus in a stable. She put
[3:40] Speaker 3: rags on him and set him down in a box
[3:43] Speaker 3: for the animals to eat out of. The Savior was born.
[3:49] Speaker 3: On the same night, in a place not too far
[3:52] Speaker 3: from where Joseph, Mary, and Jesus were, there were shepherds
[3:56] Speaker 3: watching their sheep. It was a silent night, and there
[3:59] Speaker 3: were many stars in the sky. But that night, something
[4:03] Speaker 3: beautiful happened. The shepherds were approached by an angel. At first,
[4:09] Speaker 3: the shepherds were scared, but the angel said in a
[4:12] Speaker 3: gentle voice, Please don't be afraid. I have some good news.
[4:17] Speaker 3: The angel pointed to Bethlehem and said, Tonight the Savior
[4:22] Speaker 3: was born. He is Messiah, the Savior of the world.
[4:27] Speaker 3: Go there and look for a baby clothed in rags,
[4:31] Speaker 3: resting on a soft table. They ran towards Bethlehem and
[4:36] Speaker 3: found Joseph, Mary, and Jesus in the same way the
[4:39] Speaker 3: angel had told them they would.
[4:41] Speaker 1: The shepherds told.
[4:42] Speaker 3: The family about what they saw, and when they were done,
[4:45] Speaker 3: They left, giving Yahweh praise because of what they saw.
[4:50] Speaker 3: A short time later, Joseph and Mary took Jesus to
[4:53] Speaker 3: a temple to be presented. There was also a man
[4:56] Speaker 3: named Simeon, and God had told Simeon that he wouldn't
[5:00] Speaker 3: die until he saw the real Savior. He saw Joseph
[5:04] Speaker 3: and Mary and asked if he could hold Jesus. And
[5:08] Speaker 3: when he looked in his eyes, he said, Praise God!
[5:14] Speaker 3: He looked up to the sky and said, I can
[5:17] Speaker 3: now die in peace, God. My eyes have seen your salvation.
[5:23] Speaker 3: After him, an old lady who worked in the temple
[5:26] Speaker 3: for many years started telling everyone, the Messiah is here.
[5:31] Speaker 3: The promised one is here.
[5:38] Speaker 1: Now, this is a very happy, in fact, you might
[5:42] Speaker 1: say merry story. But I'll bet you've heard it before.
[5:46] Speaker 1: When do you usually hear the story of Jesus' birthday?
[5:49] Speaker 2: That's right, at Christmas.
[5:51] Speaker 1: This is the Christmas story, but it's also a wonderful
[5:55] Speaker 1: story to think about all year long. Now, why do
[5:59] Speaker 1: you think that is? Why was Jesus' birthday so special? Well,
[6:04] Speaker 1: there are a lot of reasons, but one big reason
[6:07] Speaker 1: is because it showed a lot of people how God
[6:10] Speaker 1: thinks about things and about us. Before Jesus came, God
[6:15] Speaker 1: spoke to his people through prophets like Elijah, Isaiah, and Jeremiah.
[6:19] Speaker 1: But because Jesus was the Messiah, those prophets spoke about,
[6:23] Speaker 1: he didn't just speak for God. He spoke as God.
[6:28] Speaker 1: People learned a lot about God when Jesus was born.
[6:31] Speaker 1: What did they all learn? Well, Mary and Joseph learned
[6:35] Speaker 1: that even when it feels like nothing's going according to plan,
[6:38] Speaker 1: God still has everything under control. I'm sure it wasn't
[6:43] Speaker 1: easy for Mary to travel so far from home when
[6:46] Speaker 1: she was pregnant and exhausted. And it definitely wasn't easy
[6:50] Speaker 1: to give birth in a place with spider webs in
[6:53] Speaker 1: the corners that smelled like sheep, wood, and hay. But
[6:58] Speaker 1: Mary and Joseph learned that things don't have to be
[7:01] Speaker 1: perfect for God to show up. He'll come to us
[7:04] Speaker 1: whenever we need, even in the middle of a mess.
[7:08] Speaker 1: And the shepherds learned you don't have to have a
[7:10] Speaker 1: lot of money. power or friends forgot to think you're important.
[7:15] Speaker 1: He loves you for you, not what you have or
[7:19] Speaker 1: who you know. The greatest announcement in history wasn't made
[7:24] Speaker 1: to a president, a king, or anyone famous. It was
[7:28] Speaker 1: made to guys who slept out in the rain and snow,
[7:32] Speaker 1: who did whatever it takes to protect little lambs that
[7:35] Speaker 1: couldn't protect themselves. In fact, Jesus had a soft spot
[7:40] Speaker 1: for guys like that He respected them so much that
[7:43] Speaker 1: he later told everyone that he himself was like a shepherd.
[7:48] Speaker 1: And he showed us he'd also do whatever it takes
[7:51] Speaker 1: to protect those who can't protect themselves. The angels learned
[7:55] Speaker 1: that God, who is the king of the universe and
[7:59] Speaker 1: more powerful than anyone or anything, is also humble enough
[8:04] Speaker 1: to become helpless like a baby. And Simeon learned that
[8:07] Speaker 1: God always, always, always keeps his promises. Anna learned that
[8:13] Speaker 1: even when you feel like everyone else has forgotten you,
[8:16] Speaker 1: God never forgets you. And you and me, what do
[8:19] Speaker 1: we learn from Jesus' birthday? Well, besides everything that Mary, Joseph,
[8:25] Speaker 1: the shepherds, the angels, Simeon, and Anna learned, we learned
[8:29] Speaker 1: that God knows how we feel. Even though he is
[8:32] Speaker 1: king of the universe, he knows us and loves us.
[8:36] Speaker 1: And he wants to be near to us. When you're sad,
[8:40] Speaker 1: Jesus knows how you feel. And when you're happy and
[8:43] Speaker 1: jumping up and down, Jesus also knows how you feel.
[8:47] Speaker 1: Jesus was a baby once like you were. Sometimes he
[8:51] Speaker 1: was cold and hungry. He even cried for his mom
[8:54] Speaker 1: and he laughed with his dad. He fell and skinned
[8:58] Speaker 1: his knees. And I think he loved to chase warm,
[9:00] Speaker 1: fuzzy animals and snuggle with them when he caught them.
[9:03] Speaker 1: He knows what it's like to live here on earth.
[9:06] Speaker 1: He knows it's not easy. So when you bring him
[9:09] Speaker 1: a problem, you don't have to worry that it's too
[9:12] Speaker 1: small or that he doesn't care. He loves you for you.
[9:17] Speaker 1: And he wants to be where you are, even if
[9:19] Speaker 1: you are in the middle of a mess. I am
[9:23] Speaker 1: so happy you joined me today. Come back next time
