[1:30] Speaker 2: The Apostles Arrested In our last story, Ananias and Sapphira
[1:36] Speaker 2: lied to the Holy Spirit and were stricken dead. In
[1:41] Speaker 2: this story, the Apostles will be put into prison and
[1:45] Speaker 2: an angel will release them. And although the Jewish leaders
[1:48] Speaker 2: want them killed, Gamaliel will persuade them to leave them alone.
[1:55] Speaker 2: As Inspired by Acts.
[2:01] Speaker 1: Hi there, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress
[2:04] Speaker 1: Sadler with the Kids Bible in Ear podcast. I am
[2:08] Speaker 1: so happy you're here. Today's story is about what happens
[2:12] Speaker 1: when Jesus' disciples get arrested, but they keep telling people
[2:16] Speaker 1: about Jesus anyway. Let's jump right in.
[2:22] Speaker 2: Through the apostles, many people came to know Jesus, and
[2:25] Speaker 2: many signs and miracles were performed among the peoples. This
[2:30] Speaker 2: upset the Jewish leaders and made them jealous, so they
[2:33] Speaker 2: arrested the apostles and put them in jail. During the night,
[2:38] Speaker 2: an angel appeared to the apostles and released them, saying, Go,
[2:44] Speaker 2: stand in the temple courts and tell the people all
[2:47] Speaker 2: about this new life. In the morning, the apostles entered
[2:51] Speaker 2: the temple courts and began to teach all the people.
[2:55] Speaker 2: When the high priest arrived to the jail with some
[2:58] Speaker 2: of the other officials, The apostles were nowhere to be found.
[3:03] Speaker 2: The officer reported, We found the jail securely locked, with
[3:07] Speaker 2: the guards standing at the doors, but when we opened them,
[3:10] Speaker 2: we found no one inside. The priest became greatly confused
[3:15] Speaker 2: as to what had happened. Then someone came and said, Look,
[3:20] Speaker 2: the men you put in jail are standing in the
[3:22] Speaker 2: temple courts teaching the people. The priest and the officers
[3:26] Speaker 2: immediately went after the apostles and took them away. The
[3:30] Speaker 2: apostles were then questioned by the leaders of Israel as
[3:33] Speaker 2: to why they were being disobedient to the government. To
[3:37] Speaker 2: this they responded, We must obey God rather than human beings.
[3:42] Speaker 2: The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead
[3:45] Speaker 2: whom you killed by hanging him on a cross. God
[3:49] Speaker 2: exalted him to be his own right hand as Savior
[3:52] Speaker 2: that he might bring Israel to repentance and forgive their sins.
[3:57] Speaker 2: We are witnesses of these things and so is the
[4:00] Speaker 2: Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.
[4:05] Speaker 2: This answer made the leaders very upset, and they wanted
[4:09] Speaker 2: to kill the apostles. But a well-liked Pharisee named Gamaliel
[4:14] Speaker 2: stood up and asked to speak to the leaders away
[4:18] Speaker 2: from the apostles. He said, Men of Israel, consider carefully
[4:23] Speaker 2: what you intend to do to these men. He continued,
[4:27] Speaker 2: By sharing examples of other revolts, that died out after
[4:31] Speaker 2: the leader had died. And then he ended saying, Leave
[4:34] Speaker 2: these men alone. Let them go. For if their purpose
[4:38] Speaker 2: or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But
[4:42] Speaker 2: if it is from God, you will not be able
[4:46] Speaker 2: to stop these men. You will only find yourselves fighting
[4:50] Speaker 2: against God. At this, the leaders were persuaded, and after
[4:56] Speaker 2: beating them, let the apostles go, believing that the name
[4:59] Speaker 2: of Jesus would die. When released, the apostles praised God
[5:04] Speaker 2: because they suffered for him. Day after day, they never
[5:09] Speaker 2: stopped sharing the story of Jesus to anyone. When the
[5:12] Speaker 2: number of followers grew, the apostles could no longer care
[5:16] Speaker 2: for everyone, so they gathered everyone together and elected seven
[5:20] Speaker 2: people to help care for the people as they continued
[5:24] Speaker 2: to teach and pray. Everyone was happy with this decision.
[5:28] Speaker 2: And the number of followers grew daily.
[5:36] Speaker 1: More and more people are following Jesus. Isn't it wonderful?
[5:41] Speaker 1: And the religious leaders can't do anything to stop it.
[5:45] Speaker 1: They tried to close down the church and it just
[5:47] Speaker 1: kept getting bigger. They put the apostles in jail and
[5:51] Speaker 1: an angel let them out. No matter what those religious
[5:55] Speaker 1: leaders did, God's people just couldn't be stopped. You'd think
[6:00] Speaker 1: that they had seen that God was doing something extraordinary.
[6:05] Speaker 1: But those religious leaders had the same problem that many
[6:08] Speaker 1: people have today. They had turned off their maybe makers.
[6:13] Speaker 1: What's a maybe maker? A maybe maker is the part
[6:18] Speaker 1: of your brain that looks at new information and says, Hmm,
[6:22] Speaker 1: maybe what I thought before is wrong.
[6:26] Speaker 2: Hmm.
[6:27] Speaker 1: Maybe I should consider these new ideas. Hmm. Maybe God
[6:32] Speaker 1: is doing something new that I didn't expect. Now, all
[6:37] Speaker 1: of Jesus' followers had wonderfully healthy maybe makers. When they
[6:42] Speaker 1: first met him, their maybe makers leaped into action. They
[6:46] Speaker 1: turned Jesus' words over and over in their heads. Hmm.
[6:50] Speaker 1: Love my neighbor as myself?
[6:53] Speaker 2: Hmm. Hmm.
[6:54] Speaker 1: Stop pointing out what others do wrong and fix my
[6:57] Speaker 1: own actions instead and when their maybe makers said maybe
[7:03] Speaker 1: jesus is right god is doing something new that i
[7:08] Speaker 1: didn't expect their hearts opened wide and god came right
[7:13] Speaker 1: in but the religious leaders weren't interested in maybes not
[7:18] Speaker 1: at all In fact, they had shut the doors to
[7:21] Speaker 1: their brains and locked them up tight with a thousand keys.
[7:25] Speaker 1: They knew what they thought to be true. And they
[7:28] Speaker 1: absolutely positively were not going to consider anything else. Their
[7:34] Speaker 1: maybe makers didn't stand a chance. Now, these religious leaders
[7:39] Speaker 1: weren't necessarily bad men. They thought they were doing the
[7:44] Speaker 1: right thing. From their perspective, Jesus and his teachings were dangerous.
[7:49] Speaker 1: And so were his followers. That's why the leaders tried
[7:52] Speaker 1: to get rid of them. But trying to do God's
[7:55] Speaker 1: work without talking to God about it is never a
[7:58] Speaker 1: good idea. Neither is refusing to let him talk back
[8:02] Speaker 1: to you through your maybe maker. And all these religious
[8:06] Speaker 1: leaders didn't seem to have any good ideas at all.
[8:10] Speaker 1: Except Gamaliel. He didn't believe in Jesus or in what Jesus'
[8:15] Speaker 1: followers said. But he was at least willing to turn
[8:18] Speaker 1: on his maybe maker, even if it was only for
[8:22] Speaker 1: a little bit. And on the day Peter and the
[8:24] Speaker 1: others stood in front of the religious leaders and the
[8:27] Speaker 1: Jewish court, God used Gamaliel's maybe maker to save their lives.
[8:33] Speaker 1: Gamaliel said, look, remember the other guys who said they
[8:36] Speaker 1: were the Messiah? Judas, Judas, eventually everybody realized they weren't
[8:42] Speaker 1: and their followers just went away. If Jesus is not
[8:46] Speaker 1: the Messiah, maybe the thing will happen to his followers.
[8:50] Speaker 1: And because the new idea came from someone who looked
[8:53] Speaker 1: like them and sounded like them, the religious leaders didn't
[8:57] Speaker 1: have to turn on their own maybe makers. So they agreed.
[9:01] Speaker 1: But if they had been willing to say, hmm, maybe
[9:05] Speaker 1: I should listen to what Peter and John and those
[9:07] Speaker 1: other guys are saying, their hearts would have opened wide
[9:11] Speaker 1: and God would have come right in. Today, sadly, there
[9:15] Speaker 1: are many people just like them. People who have turned
[9:19] Speaker 1: off their maybe makers and shut the doors to their brains,
[9:23] Speaker 1: locking them up tight with a thousand keys. They know
[9:28] Speaker 1: what they think to be true, and they absolutely positively
[9:32] Speaker 1: will not consider anything else. You'll never hear them say, hmm,
[9:39] Speaker 1: maybe there really is a God. Or, hmm, maybe I
[9:44] Speaker 1: should study the Bible before I say it isn't true. Or, hmm,
[9:49] Speaker 1: that's not the way I grew up doing it, but
[9:51] Speaker 1: maybe I should give this a new way of doing
[9:54] Speaker 1: things a chance. God might be doing something I didn't expect,
[9:58] Speaker 1: but now that you know, know how important your maybe
[10:02] Speaker 1: maker is, you can keep it turned on and help
[10:05] Speaker 1: others open their eyes to see when God is doing
[10:08] Speaker 1: something extraordinary. I am so happy you joined me today.
