[0:00] Speaker 1: Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said it was
[0:03] Speaker 1: necessary that God's word should be spoken to you first. Behold,
[0:08] Speaker 1: we turn to the Gentiles, for so has the Lord
[0:11] Speaker 1: commanded us, saying, I have set you as a light
[0:14] Speaker 1: for the Gentiles, that you should bring salvation to the
[0:17] Speaker 1: uttermost parts of the earth. Acts 13, 46-47 Dear God,
[0:21] Speaker 1: thank you for the example of a bold witness in Paul.
[0:29] Speaker 1: Help us to be strong and brave and faithful to
[0:32] Speaker 1: share your truth and love those you put in our path.
[0:37] Speaker 1: Thank you for the ways in which you allowed your
[0:39] Speaker 1: word to spread throughout the earth. And we know that
[0:43] Speaker 1: as long as we're still here, you're not done with us.

[1:25] Speaker 3: Paul and Barnabas go to Perga. In our last story,
[1:29] Speaker 3: Peter was delivered from prison by an angel, and King
[1:32] Speaker 3: Herod was struck dead and eaten by worms. In this story,
[1:38] Speaker 3: Saul and Barnabas are anointed by the church and begin
[1:41] Speaker 3: their missionary journeys. And Saul becomes known as Paul, as
[1:47] Speaker 3: inspired by Acts.
[1:53] Speaker 1: Hey everyone, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffers Sadler.
[1:57] Speaker 1: I am so glad you're back for the Kids Bible
[2:00] Speaker 1: in Year podcast. Let's dive right into today's story. Saul
[2:05] Speaker 1: is getting a new name and he's preaching one of
[2:07] Speaker 1: the greatest sermons ever as the Word of God continues
[2:11] Speaker 1: to reach the world. Here we go.
[2:16] Speaker 3: The church in Antioch now had many appointed prophets and teachers,
[2:20] Speaker 3: including Barnabas, Saul, and more. As they were all worshiping together,
[2:25] Speaker 3: the Holy Spirit spoke, saying, Keep Saul and Barnabas for me.
[2:30] Speaker 3: I have a new work to which I am calling
[2:32] Speaker 3: them to. Hearing this, they fasted and prayed for the
[2:36] Speaker 3: Holy Spirit to reveal his will to Saul and Barnabas.
[2:41] Speaker 3: The congregation laid hands on the men and sent them
[2:44] Speaker 3: off to where the Holy Spirit called them. Saul and
[2:47] Speaker 3: Barnabas were led by the Spirit to Seleucia, and from
[2:51] Speaker 3: there they sailed to Cyprus. They anchored at Salamis and
[2:56] Speaker 3: began to preach God's word in Jewish temples with John
[3:00] Speaker 3: helping them. They traveled around the whole island and reached
[3:04] Speaker 3: a place called Pavos. There they saw a sorcerer named
[3:09] Speaker 3: Bar-Jesus who worked for a political official named Sergius Paulus.
[3:15] Speaker 3: He had asked for Saul and Barnabas to come to
[3:17] Speaker 3: him and speak the word of God to him. Another
[3:21] Speaker 3: sorcerer named Elimeas tried to stop them and tried to
[3:25] Speaker 3: convince Sergius Paulus away from God and any words Saul
[3:29] Speaker 3: and Barnabas were going to say to him about God.
[3:33] Speaker 3: The Holy Spirit filled Saul and he looked Elimeas in
[3:36] Speaker 3: the eyes and said, You son of the devil, why
[3:41] Speaker 3: do you stand against what is right? You are full
[3:43] Speaker 3: of tricks and lies. How long will you live bashing
[3:47] Speaker 3: the ways of the Lord? Now you are on God's
[3:51] Speaker 3: bad side. For a time you will be blind, unable
[3:54] Speaker 3: to see a thing. In an instant, his eyes went
[3:58] Speaker 3: black and he stumbled around trying to find someone to
[4:01] Speaker 3: help him get around. Sergius Paulus saw what had happened
[4:05] Speaker 3: and immediately wanted to know more about the Lord. Saul
[4:10] Speaker 3: now also called Paul, along with Barnabas and John, left
[4:14] Speaker 3: Paphos and sailed to Perga. In Perga, John left to
[4:19] Speaker 3: return to Jerusalem, and the others went on to Antioch
[4:22] Speaker 3: in Pisidia. The Sabbath came, and they went up to
[4:26] Speaker 3: the temple. The religious leaders of the temple read God's
[4:30] Speaker 3: law and from the prophets. When they finished, they called
[4:34] Speaker 3: to Paul and his friends and said, Is there anything
[4:37] Speaker 3: you would like to say? Has God given you anything,
[4:40] Speaker 3: dear brothers? If so, speak. As if he knew this
[4:45] Speaker 3: was coming, Paul immediately stood up and began to speak. Jews, Gentiles,
[4:51] Speaker 3: all of you who worship our Lord, hear what I
[4:54] Speaker 3: have to say. Our God chose the Israelites, our ancestors,
[5:00] Speaker 3: and they thrived in Egypt. With his power and grace,
[5:04] Speaker 3: he led them out of Egypt into freedom. They survived
[5:08] Speaker 3: 40 years in the wilderness, and God killed their enemy
[5:12] Speaker 3: nations in Canaan. This took our Lord about 450 years.
[5:18] Speaker 3: Following this, God placed judges before the people and then
[5:22] Speaker 3: gave them Samuel, the prophet, as a leader. The people
[5:26] Speaker 3: began asking for a king, so the Lord sent them
[5:29] Speaker 3: Saul from the tribe of Benjamin, and he ruled for
[5:33] Speaker 3: 40 years. After Saul came the next king, King David.
[5:37] Speaker 3: whom God called a man after my own heart. From
[5:41] Speaker 3: the line of David come our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,
[5:45] Speaker 3: just as prophesied. Paul continued to preach to the people
[5:50] Speaker 3: about Jesus all the way to the moment he was
[5:52] Speaker 3: taken back to heaven to be with his father. After
[5:56] Speaker 3: Paul was done preaching, he and Barnabas left the temple,
[5:59] Speaker 3: and people started asking them to talk about this Jesus
[6:03] Speaker 3: again on the next Sabbath. As everyone left, Many Jews,
[6:08] Speaker 3: new and old, followed Paul and Barnabas as they continued
[6:11] Speaker 3: to talk to them and encouraged them to stay in
[6:14] Speaker 3: God's grace. The next Sabbath came and the whole city
[6:18] Speaker 3: came to hear God's word. And the other Jews grew
[6:21] Speaker 3: jealous and began to push back on Paul's words and
[6:25] Speaker 3: abused him. Paul and Barnabas heard what they were saying
[6:30] Speaker 3: and spoke up. We were told to speak these things
[6:33] Speaker 3: to you. but since you are going to reject us
[6:36] Speaker 3: and condemn us, we will go to the Gentiles. The
[6:40] Speaker 3: Lord has commanded us to bring the light of God's
[6:42] Speaker 3: word to the Gentiles so that they may be saved.
[6:46] Speaker 3: All of the Gentiles who heard this were filled with happiness,
[6:49] Speaker 3: and they began to respect the Lord's word. The Jewish
[6:53] Speaker 3: religious officials gathered some important men and women, and they
[6:57] Speaker 3: all stirred up riots against Paul and Barnabas and kicked
[7:00] Speaker 3: them out of the city. Paul and Barnabas brushed the
[7:04] Speaker 3: insults off, and continued on their journey to Iconium. The
[7:09] Speaker 3: disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit, and their hearts
[7:13] Speaker 3: were bursting with joy.
[7:19] Speaker 1: Okay, we find ourselves back at the church in Antioch,
[7:23] Speaker 1: which is still growing as the people worship God and
[7:25] Speaker 1: the Holy Spirit fills their hearts. God says he has
[7:29] Speaker 1: a very specific assignment for Saul and Barnabas. It's as
[7:33] Speaker 1: if he is picking up Saul and Barnabas and setting
[7:36] Speaker 1: them in another place for another purpose. They fast and pray,
[7:41] Speaker 1: asking God to show them where he wants them to go.
[7:44] Speaker 1: The church lays hands on them and sends them off.
[7:48] Speaker 1: The world's first missionaries. If you are a part of
[7:52] Speaker 1: a church, your church most likely has done this many
[7:56] Speaker 1: of times. Perhaps someone feels called by God to go
[8:00] Speaker 1: to another part of the world... and share the good
[8:02] Speaker 1: news of Jesus. Before they go, the church sends them
[8:07] Speaker 1: out by praying for them and asking for God's protection
[8:11] Speaker 1: and guidance. It's a beautiful thing, but it's also important
[8:16] Speaker 1: to remember that the Holy Spirit is really the one
[8:19] Speaker 1: sending them. The church is there to pray and support
[8:23] Speaker 1: them along the way. Do you know any missionaries you
[8:26] Speaker 1: can pray for today? If so, stop for a moment
[8:30] Speaker 1: and ask God in your heart to watch over them.
[8:33] Speaker 1: Give them courage and help them do the work he
[8:35] Speaker 1: has called them to do. Pray for their families and
[8:39] Speaker 1: for the people they will meet on their mission. Who knows?
[8:42] Speaker 1: Maybe you will be the one who is sent out
[8:45] Speaker 1: one day. Perhaps you will be the one called by
[8:48] Speaker 1: God to go to an unfamiliar place and share the
[8:51] Speaker 1: love of God, just like Saul and Barnabas. Okay, back
[8:56] Speaker 1: to the story. They arrive in a city called Salamis,
[8:59] Speaker 1: where Barnabas grew up as a child. They preached openly
[9:03] Speaker 1: in the synagogue, with John Mark helping them, telling their
[9:07] Speaker 1: stories and explaining all that Jesus did. Then they reached
[9:11] Speaker 1: a place called Paphos, a city full of sin with
[9:14] Speaker 1: people who were very far from God. They came across
[9:18] Speaker 1: a Roman proconsul named Sergius Paulus. He was a very
[9:22] Speaker 1: smart man who held an important office in his area.
[9:26] Speaker 1: And he wanted to hear more. Saul and Barnabas also
[9:30] Speaker 1: came across an evil man who tried to keep them
[9:33] Speaker 1: from talking about Jesus. But the Holy Spirit took over
[9:37] Speaker 1: and the man actually became blind. Because of that, the
[9:42] Speaker 1: proconsul believed and the people longed to hear more. As
[9:46] Speaker 1: they set sail, something interesting happened in the Bible. Saul
[9:50] Speaker 1: is now called Paul. It wasn't unusual for people to
[9:53] Speaker 1: have two names in those days. he was given the
[9:56] Speaker 1: Jewish name, Saul, when he was born. was born. But
[10:04] Speaker 1: his Roman or more casual name was Paul. This is
[10:08] Speaker 1: what his friends who knew him well would call him.
[10:11] Speaker 1: As the Bible transitions from Saul to Paul, we start
[10:15] Speaker 1: to see Paul stand out as a strong leader and
[10:17] Speaker 1: hero in the faith. We're going to get to know
[10:20] Speaker 1: him even more in the days ahead. Paul and his
[10:24] Speaker 1: team arrived in Antioch, and it's there in the synagogue
[10:27] Speaker 1: that Paul preaches a powerful sermon explaining the life of
[10:31] Speaker 1: Jesus from the line of David, his resurrection and forgiveness
[10:34] Speaker 1: of sins. Because of this message, many people wanted to
[10:39] Speaker 1: hear more and bring their friends. So Paul spoke again
[10:42] Speaker 1: the next Sabbath, and pretty much the whole city showed up.
[10:47] Speaker 1: But some Jews were not happy. They were pouting and mad,
[10:51] Speaker 1: saying they didn't believe. So what did Paul do? He said,
[10:55] Speaker 1: okay then, if you don't like your message, we will
[10:58] Speaker 1: go to the Gentiles from now on because they believe.
[11:03] Speaker 1: Some fighting broke out, so Paul and his party left
[11:06] Speaker 1: the city. But make no mistake, the Holy Spirit was
[11:10] Speaker 1: filled with the disciples of Jesus and their hearts, as
[11:14] Speaker 1: we heard, were bursting with joy. Just wowed. Thank you
[11:19] Speaker 1: for joining me to hear about how the message of
[11:21] Speaker 1: Jesus is spreading around the world. His plan is unfolding
[11:25] Speaker 1: and he's using his people to build his kingdom. Next
[11:29] Speaker 1: time Paul is going to suffer in a whole new way,
[11:32] Speaker 1: but it won't stop God's plan. Come back and you'll
[11:35] Speaker 1: see what I mean. The Bible is the best story
[11:38] Speaker 1: ever told. It's God's story to you and it's all true.
