[1:24] Speaker 2: Healing at the Gate Called Beautiful In our last story,
[1:29] Speaker 2: on the day of Pentecost, the disciples were filled with
[1:32] Speaker 2: the Holy Spirit, and many people, even with different languages,
[1:37] Speaker 2: heard the truth about God. Peter explained it, and 3,000
[1:42] Speaker 2: people believed. In this story, Peter and John will heal
[1:47] Speaker 2: a man at a gate called Beautiful and get in
[1:50] Speaker 2: trouble with.
[1:51] Speaker 3: The religious authorities.
[1:53] Speaker 2: As inspired by Acts.
[1:59] Speaker 1: Well, hi, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress
[2:03] Speaker 1: Sadler with the Kids Bible in Ear podcast. I am
[2:06] Speaker 1: so happy you're here today. In this story, we get
[2:10] Speaker 1: to hear about a wonderful healing, an image what it
[2:13] Speaker 1: would be like if we had seen it ourselves. Are
[2:16] Speaker 1: you ready? Let's listen in.
[2:21] Speaker 2: Peter and John... went up to the temple to pray,
[2:25] Speaker 2: as they always did, when they saw a man being
[2:28] Speaker 2: brought to the gate in front of the temple called Beautiful.
[2:33] Speaker 2: He had to be carried to the gate because he
[2:35] Speaker 2: had been lame since the day he was born. The
[2:38] Speaker 2: man was placed in front of the gate and began
[2:41] Speaker 2: to beg as he had done every day. Peter and
[2:44] Speaker 2: John saw this, and the man asked them for money.
[2:48] Speaker 2: They both looked at him and called for the man's attention.
[2:52] Speaker 2: We do not have any silver or gold for you,
[2:54] Speaker 2: but we have something else. In the name of Jesus Christ,
[2:59] Speaker 2: stand up and walk. Peter reached down and grabbed the
[3:03] Speaker 2: man by the right hand and picked him up. When
[3:06] Speaker 2: he reached his feet, he began to jump, run, and walk.
[3:10] Speaker 2: He ran into the temple and through the temple courts,
[3:13] Speaker 2: running and jumping, showing the people the miracle he had
[3:17] Speaker 2: just received. Everyone who saw him in the temple laughed.
[3:21] Speaker 2: recognized him as the lame man who begged out by
[3:24] Speaker 2: the gate called Beautiful, and they were struck with amazement
[3:29] Speaker 2: at what they just saw. The people saw the man
[3:33] Speaker 2: with Peter and John, and they all ran up to
[3:35] Speaker 2: them filled with amazement. You're surprised, Peter said to the people.
[3:40] Speaker 2: You are looking at us like we are the man
[3:42] Speaker 2: who healed this man. We did not do anything. You
[3:47] Speaker 2: know who did? God, the God of Abraham. the one
[3:51] Speaker 2: who sent Jesus to this earth to teach us, Jesus,
[3:55] Speaker 2: the man you sent off to Pilate to be killed,
[3:59] Speaker 2: the man that was disowned by his very people. But
[4:03] Speaker 2: then he was raised from the dead. By his name
[4:07] Speaker 2: and his power, this miracle was performed. This healing, you see,
[4:11] Speaker 2: was not in my name or in John's name, but
[4:14] Speaker 2: in Jesus' name, the only name that could have healed
[4:18] Speaker 2: this man. You've seen what my God can do. Repent
[4:23] Speaker 2: and turn your face to God. He will wipe all
[4:26] Speaker 2: your sins away. Believe in Jesus, for he will come again,
[4:32] Speaker 2: as he said so himself. The religious leaders heard Peter
[4:36] Speaker 2: and John preaching to the people and approached them. Upset,
[4:40] Speaker 2: they arrested Peter and John and took them to be
[4:43] Speaker 2: put into prison for the night. Even though they were
[4:46] Speaker 2: arrested for their message, there were many who gave their
[4:50] Speaker 2: lives to the Lord that day. Their number grew to
[4:53] Speaker 2: around 5,000. The next morning, the religious leaders had Peter
[5:00] Speaker 2: and John brought to them. Whose name are you healing,
[5:03] Speaker 2: and where does the power come from? The Holy Spirit
[5:07] Speaker 2: came into Peter in that instant, and he said, That
[5:10] Speaker 2: man was healed in the name of Jesus Christ, the
[5:13] Speaker 2: man you killed, but the one God raised from the grave,
[5:18] Speaker 2: Jesus Christ. The man you rejected has become the foundation
[5:21] Speaker 2: of our faith. There is no other name that can
[5:25] Speaker 2: heal and save like the name of Jesus. The leaders
[5:29] Speaker 2: scoffed at Peter and John, for he was uneducated and ordinary.
[5:34] Speaker 2: But they realized that the men had both been with Jesus.
[5:38] Speaker 2: They had no words, for the man that was lame
[5:41] Speaker 2: had been healed. The leaders sent Peter and John away
[5:45] Speaker 2: so they could decide what to do with these men.
[5:48] Speaker 2: What should we do? All of Jerusalem saw this, and
[5:51] Speaker 2: it cannot be denied that the lame man is healed.
[5:55] Speaker 2: They deliberated and then came to a decision. We have
[5:59] Speaker 2: to stop this. We should tell the people that the
[6:02] Speaker 2: name Peter and John used to heal the lame man
[6:05] Speaker 2: shall not be spoken again. They called for Peter and
[6:08] Speaker 2: John to come back so that they could present their decision.
[6:12] Speaker 2: The religious leaders told Peter and John that they could
[6:15] Speaker 2: not speak the name of Jesus under any Peter and
[6:20] Speaker 2: John said, Are we to not do what is right
[6:24] Speaker 2: in the eyes of our God? Are we to listen
[6:26] Speaker 2: to you over the voice of our God? Of course not.
[6:30] Speaker 2: We cannot stay silent about what has just happened. Peter
[6:34] Speaker 2: and John were released because the leaders did not know
[6:38] Speaker 2: what to say to that. For the man who was
[6:40] Speaker 2: healed had been lame for 40 years or more. Peter
[6:45] Speaker 2: and John went and told the people what the leaders
[6:47] Speaker 2: had said but they refused to listen as well. They
[6:51] Speaker 2: all began to pray together, and God showed up. The
[6:55] Speaker 2: place they were began to shake, and everyone present was
[7:00] Speaker 2: filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke God's word without fear.
[7:11] Speaker 1: Wow! The work of Jesus hasn't stopped at all, has it?
[7:15] Speaker 1: The good news of the kingdom of heaven is still
[7:18] Speaker 1: being preached. People are still being healed. And God is
[7:22] Speaker 1: still changing lives. What an exciting time. Now, sometimes when
[7:28] Speaker 1: we read stories in the Bible, it's easy to get
[7:31] Speaker 1: used to amazing things happening. Because so many amazing things
[7:35] Speaker 1: happen in the Bible. But let's pretend this is not
[7:40] Speaker 1: a Bible story. And think about it as if you
[7:43] Speaker 1: were actually a part of it. Imagine there is a
[7:46] Speaker 1: minor league baseball team in your town and you love baseball.
[7:51] Speaker 1: You go to every game you can. And whenever you
[7:55] Speaker 1: go to the ballpark, you see Marie. Marie wears a
[7:59] Speaker 1: ball cap and hands out programs. She knows your name
[8:03] Speaker 1: and she always calls you Bubba. Marie smiles a lot
[8:08] Speaker 1: and spins her red wheelchair around to give you a
[8:10] Speaker 1: high five every time you walk in. You've never seen
[8:14] Speaker 1: her without it. Now, imagine you're young enough to play t-ball.
[8:19] Speaker 1: You go to a baseball game with your mom and dad,
[8:22] Speaker 1: and you're so short you have to reach up to
[8:24] Speaker 1: hold your hands. Marie says, hey, Bubba, and gives you
[8:28] Speaker 1: a program and a high five. It's a fun game,
[8:32] Speaker 1: but you fall asleep on your dad's shoulder, and he
[8:35] Speaker 1: carries you out. A few years later, you're playing Little League,
[8:40] Speaker 1: and now you're excited to go to the ballpark with
[8:42] Speaker 1: your friends. Marie is there and she spins her red
[8:45] Speaker 1: wheelchair around when she sees you. You get a high
[8:49] Speaker 1: five and a program and a, hey, Bubba. A few
[8:52] Speaker 1: years later, you play right field for your middle school team.
[8:55] Speaker 1: Then in high school, you play first base on the
[8:57] Speaker 1: JV team. Then on the varsity team. Then you get
[9:01] Speaker 1: a scholarship to play baseball in college. All that time,
[9:06] Speaker 1: you go to game after game at the ballpark. Marie
[9:10] Speaker 1: still spins her wheelchair to give you a high five
[9:12] Speaker 1: and a program, but her movements start getting slower and
[9:17] Speaker 1: her hair is getting grayer. Hey, Bubba, she calls. Hey, Marie,
[9:22] Speaker 1: you call back. But most days you can barely see
[9:25] Speaker 1: her red wheelchair through the crowd. Then one day you're
[9:29] Speaker 1: back at the ballpark as a player. But when you
[9:33] Speaker 1: walk in, there's no red wheelchair. No Marie.
[9:37] Speaker 2: No.
[9:38] Speaker 1: Hey, Bubba. Then something on the field catches your attention.
[9:43] Speaker 1: It's Marie. She's jumping and laughing and throwing the ball
[9:47] Speaker 1: around your teammates. The red wheelchair you've seen her in
[9:50] Speaker 1: your entire life is down in the dugout. She doesn't
[9:56] Speaker 1: need it anymore. She's healed. that's how amazing it was
[10:02] Speaker 1: when the beggar at the gate called beautiful was healed
[10:06] Speaker 1: people had seen him lying by that gate their entire
[10:10] Speaker 1: lives so when this man that everybody knew couldn't walk
[10:15] Speaker 1: was suddenly skipping everyone knew it couldn't be a trick
[10:19] Speaker 1: It had to be real. Even the religious authorities had
[10:23] Speaker 1: to admit it. You see, they were frustrated that the
[10:26] Speaker 1: work of Jesus hadn't stopped. It hadn't even slowed down.
[10:31] Speaker 1: They thought that when Jesus was killed, everyone would stop
[10:35] Speaker 1: believing in him. But that wasn't the end of Jesus' work.
[10:40] Speaker 1: It was only the beginning. Because when people meet Jesus,
[10:44] Speaker 1: they change in wonderful ways. For example, do you remember
[10:49] Speaker 1: how scared Peter was after Jesus was arrested? He was
[10:53] Speaker 1: so afraid he told people he didn't even know Jesus.
[10:57] Speaker 1: But now, Peter is bravely telling everybody about Jesus, even
[11:03] Speaker 1: though it got him arrested. And John, who was a fisherman,
[11:07] Speaker 1: is speaking so wisely and intelligently, nobody could believe he
[11:13] Speaker 1: was not a trained scholar. And the beggar who had
[11:16] Speaker 1: been lame for a lifetime could run the bases if
[11:19] Speaker 1: he'd had the chance. Today, Jesus' work hasn't stopped. People
[11:24] Speaker 1: still change when they meet him in wonderful ways. I
[11:29] Speaker 1: am so happy you joined me today. Come back next
[11:32] Speaker 1: time to hear what happens when one couple tries to
[11:35] Speaker 1: lie to God. Remember, the Bible is the best story
[11:39] Speaker 1: ever told. It's God's story to you, and it's all true.
