[1:23] Speaker 4: will learn about Jesus on the Road to Emmaus. But
[1:27] Speaker 4: it wasn't until he prayed and broke bread they realized
[1:31] Speaker 4: it was the risen Christ.
[1:33] Speaker 3: As inspired by the Gospels.
[1:38] Speaker 1: Hi there, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress
[1:42] Speaker 1: Sadler with the Kids Bible in a Year podcast. I
[1:45] Speaker 1: am so happy you're here today. Today's story is about
[1:49] Speaker 1: two friends who got another big surprise while they were
[1:54] Speaker 1: on a journey. And there's special guests who help them
[1:57] Speaker 1: understand everything the Bible said about Jesus. Let's jump in.
[2:05] Speaker 4: On the Sabbath, following the resurrection of Jesus, two of
[2:09] Speaker 4: the disciples were on a journey from Jerusalem to a
[2:12] Speaker 4: village called Emmaus. While they were on their way, they
[2:16] Speaker 4: were talking about everything that had occurred over the past
[2:20] Speaker 4: few days when suddenly Jesus approached them. He asked the
[2:25] Speaker 4: disciples what they were discussing, but they did not realize
[2:29] Speaker 4: it was Jesus who was speaking to them. Confused, they asked,
[2:35] Speaker 4: Are you the only man in this town unaware of
[2:38] Speaker 4: what has happened? What are you speaking of? replied Jesus.
[2:44] Speaker 4: We are discussing Jesus of Nazareth.
[2:46] Speaker 2: The one whom God spoke through.
[2:49] Speaker 4: We thought he would save us, but three days ago
[2:52] Speaker 4: he was put to death by those who rule us.
[2:55] Speaker 4: Earlier today, a couple of our women went there to
[2:59] Speaker 4: the tomb, but reported to us that his body was
[3:02] Speaker 4: not there. They said there were angels who proclaimed Jesus
[3:07] Speaker 4: was alive. Some of the men then checked, and as
[3:11] Speaker 4: the women claimed, Jesus' body was not in the tomb.
[3:17] Speaker 4: At hearing this, Jesus responded, Why is it so hard
[3:21] Speaker 4: for you to understand? It is clearly stated by the
[3:25] Speaker 4: prophets that the Messiah would have to endure such things.
[3:30] Speaker 2: He then explained what the.
[3:32] Speaker 4: Scripture said about his life, starting from the beginning. As
[3:37] Speaker 4: they came closer to the village of Emmaus, it became dark,
[3:41] Speaker 4: so they asked Jesus to stay with them for the night.
[3:45] Speaker 2: He agreed.
[3:46] Speaker 4: That night, As they ate, Jesus took the bread and
[3:50] Speaker 4: gave thanks. He broke it and gave a part to
[3:54] Speaker 4: each of them. The two disciples immediately recognized Jesus, but
[3:59] Speaker 4: suddenly he disappeared. In awe, they said, There was truly
[4:06] Speaker 4: a fire in our hearts, as he explained what the
[4:09] Speaker 4: scripture meant. They began the journey back to Jerusalem in
[4:14] Speaker 4: a hurry, to proclaim the resurrection of Jesus to the
[4:17] Speaker 4: other disciples. As soon as they arrived, they announced, What
[4:22] Speaker 4: you have heard is true. The Lord has risen, and
[4:25] Speaker 4: we have spoken with him. On our journey to Emmaus,
[4:29] Speaker 4: he explained the meaning of the scripture. At the table
[4:33] Speaker 4: he gave thanks and broke the bread, and that is
[4:36] Speaker 4: when we knew who he was. When they said this,
[4:40] Speaker 4: Jesus suddenly appeared among them, saying, Peace be with you.
[4:46] Speaker 4: The disciples were in such shock at seeing the Lord,
[4:49] Speaker 4: they thought it could be a ghost. He said to them,
[4:54] Speaker 4: Why are you in disbelief? You can see the scars
[4:58] Speaker 4: left in my hands and feet. You can even touch them.
[5:02] Speaker 2: Truly, it is me.
[5:04] Speaker 4: As they were still in amazement, Jesus asked them, Do
[5:09] Speaker 4: you have anything for me to eat? He was given
[5:12] Speaker 4: fish and honeycomb And after he ate it, Jesus began
[5:17] Speaker 4: to reveal the meaning of the scriptures to the disciples.
[5:26] Speaker 2: What is the Bible all about?
[5:28] Speaker 1: That's the question Jesus' disciples were having a hard time answering.
[5:34] Speaker 1: From the time they were your age, they had been
[5:37] Speaker 1: learning the stories you and I had been learning together.
[5:40] Speaker 1: They knew about Abraham and Moses.
[5:43] Speaker 2: King David and Daniel.
[5:45] Speaker 1: They knew the words of Isaiah and Jeremiah and all
[5:48] Speaker 1: the stories about all God's promises and how he had
[5:51] Speaker 1: faithfully kept each one.
[5:54] Speaker 2: But when Jesus, who was God, came into.
[5:57] Speaker 1: Their lives, all of a sudden what the disciples thought
[6:01] Speaker 1: they knew about God looked a little different. In fact,
[6:05] Speaker 1: it looked like the Bible had somehow been talking about.
[6:08] Speaker 2: Jesus all along.
[6:10] Speaker 1: The disciples had to rethink everything they thought they knew. Fortunately,
[6:15] Speaker 1: they didn't have to do it on their own. Jesus
[6:18] Speaker 1: was back to help. Do you remember what happened? After
[6:23] Speaker 1: the woman had told the followers of Jesus that he
[6:25] Speaker 1: was alive, two of those followers headed to a nearby
[6:29] Speaker 1: town called Emmaus. As they walked, they talked. They were
[6:34] Speaker 1: trying to understand exactly what had happened over the past
[6:38] Speaker 1: few days. It was like they had all these pieces
[6:42] Speaker 1: of a big, beautiful puzzle, but just couldn't figure out
[6:45] Speaker 1: how to put them together. Soon, Jesus started walking along
[6:49] Speaker 1: with them, but they didn't recognize him. Now, I don't
[6:53] Speaker 1: know why these two disciples didn't know it was him,
[6:57] Speaker 1: but maybe God wanted them to see the truth with
[7:00] Speaker 1: their hearts before they saw it with their eyes. Jesus
[7:04] Speaker 1: asked what they were talking about, and one of the
[7:06] Speaker 1: travelers named Cleopas said, Are you kidding me?
[7:10] Speaker 2: Don't you know what's going on?
[7:12] Speaker 1: You see, even though there were no televisions or cell
[7:16] Speaker 1: phones or internet back then, what had happened to Jesus
[7:20] Speaker 1: was so big, everyone knew about it. Then Cleopas tried
[7:25] Speaker 1: to explain the story of Jesus to Jesus. He said,
[7:30] Speaker 1: there was a guy we thought was the Messiah. He
[7:33] Speaker 1: sure seemed like it. But then he died, so we
[7:37] Speaker 1: guess it wasn't him? I imagine Jesus shook his head.
[7:41] Speaker 1: Then I imagined him saying something like, Ah, but what.
[7:46] Speaker 2: If you looked at it all like this?
[7:49] Speaker 1: And bit by bit, Jesus explains how the stories of
[7:52] Speaker 1: Abraham and Moses, King David and Daniel, and all the
[7:56] Speaker 1: rest were actually one big story about God's love. and
[8:01] Speaker 1: the rescue mission he was on to bring people like
[8:04] Speaker 1: you and me back into his loving arms.
[8:08] Speaker 2: Soon, puzzle pieces started snapping into place.
[8:12] Speaker 1: Pieces like how Israel's priests were supposed to take care
[8:16] Speaker 1: of God's people, the way shepherds take care of their flocks,
[8:20] Speaker 1: but they had disobeyed God and hurt the people instead.
[8:24] Speaker 1: So Jeremiah called them bad shepherds. Isaiah said God was
[8:28] Speaker 1: like a good shepherd who lovingly cares for his sheep.
[8:32] Speaker 2: Who said he was a good shepherd? Yes, Jesus. And
[8:37] Speaker 2: he said the good shepherd.
[8:39] Speaker 1: Lays down his life for the sheep. Snap.
[8:43] Speaker 2: That puzzle piece fell into place.
[8:46] Speaker 1: Jesus explained the words of more prophets and more pieces
[8:49] Speaker 1: started falling into place. Micah said the Messiah would be
[8:53] Speaker 1: born in Bethlehem.
[8:54] Speaker 4: Snap.
[8:55] Speaker 1: Zechariah said the Messiah would come into Jerusalem riding a donkey.
[9:00] Speaker 2: Snap!
[9:01] Speaker 1: David said the Messiah would be portrayed by a friend.
[9:05] Speaker 1: Isaiah said he would do miracles. And Malachi said a
[9:08] Speaker 1: special messenger, like John the Baptist, would tell everyone the
[9:12] Speaker 1: Messiah was coming.
[9:13] Speaker 2: Before he actually came. Snap, snap, snap!
[9:16] Speaker 1: When the travelers finally got to Emmaus and invited Jesus
[9:20] Speaker 1: in for dinner, the final puzzle piece snapped into place.
[9:25] Speaker 1: Jesus broke bread and handed it to them. The words
[9:29] Speaker 1: he had said before he died echoed in their hearts.
[9:32] Speaker 2: I am the bread of life. This is my body,
[9:35] Speaker 2: which is broken for you. Snap!
[9:38] Speaker 1: The puzzle was complete and Jesus was gone.
[9:42] Speaker 2: But for the two disciples, the Bible finally made sense.
[9:47] Speaker 1: And they joyfully ran back to Jerusalem to put the
[9:50] Speaker 1: pieces together for everyone else. I am so happy you
