[1:14] Speaker 3: Jesus appears to his disciples. In our last story, Jesus
[1:20] Speaker 3: appeared to his disciples on the road to Emmaus, He
[1:24] Speaker 3: talked about the scriptures to them. But it wasn't until
[1:27] Speaker 3: he prayed and broke bread, they realized it was the
[1:31] Speaker 3: risen Christ. In this story, Jesus will appear to Thomas.
[1:37] Speaker 3: We will see why he is also known as Doubting Thomas.
[1:41] Speaker 3: And Peter will be restored by Jesus, as inspired by
[1:47] Speaker 3: the Gospels. Well, hi!
[1:53] Speaker 1: It's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress Sadler with
[1:56] Speaker 1: the Kids Bible in Ear podcast. I am so happy
[1:59] Speaker 1: you're here today. In this story, we get to hear
[2:03] Speaker 1: how Jesus helps Thomas believe and Peter know he is forgiven.
[2:07] Speaker 1: You ready? Let's listen.
[2:12] Speaker 3: Since Thomas, one of Jesus' twelve disciples, was not with
[2:17] Speaker 3: the other eleven when Jesus rose from the dead, they
[2:20] Speaker 3: came to them. and told him what was happening. We
[2:24] Speaker 3: have seen Jesus, they told him. Thomas doubted the words
[2:28] Speaker 3: of the other disciples, saying, I will only believe you
[2:33] Speaker 3: if I can touch the holes in his hands and
[2:36] Speaker 3: feel the piercing on his side. A few days went by,
[2:40] Speaker 3: and the twelve were at the same house they were
[2:43] Speaker 3: in before. Suddenly, Jesus appeared in the room, though the
[2:47] Speaker 3: doors were locked, and stood amongst them. and said, Be
[2:53] Speaker 3: at peace. Jesus then turned to Thomas. Why don't you believe, Thomas? Here,
[3:00] Speaker 3: look at me. Touch my hands and my side. Feel
[3:04] Speaker 3: that my scars are real. No, believe. Thomas fell to
[3:09] Speaker 3: his knees and shouted, My Lord, my God. Jesus looked
[3:15] Speaker 3: at him and told him, You have seen, so now
[3:19] Speaker 3: you believe. but the ones who have not seen but
[3:23] Speaker 3: still believe are blessed. Jesus Christ went on to perform
[3:27] Speaker 3: many more miracles that were too many to write down.
[3:31] Speaker 3: Not long after, Jesus came to the disciples by the
[3:34] Speaker 3: Sea of Galilee. This is what happened. Some of the
[3:39] Speaker 3: disciples went out on a boat to go fishing. They
[3:43] Speaker 3: had not caught anything that night. When morning came, Jesus
[3:47] Speaker 3: was walking on the shore of the Sea of Galilee,
[3:50] Speaker 3: and saw the disciples fishing in the middle of the sea.
[3:53] Speaker 3: The disciples did not recognize Jesus until he spoke. Caught anything?
[4:00] Speaker 3: he yelled from the shore. Not one, they said. I
[4:05] Speaker 3: got an idea. Try the other side. You'll find some there.
[4:09] Speaker 3: Jesus answered. They did as Jesus said, and the net
[4:14] Speaker 3: instantly filled with fish. John looked at Peter and said,
[4:19] Speaker 3: It's Jesus! Peter realized that what John had said was
[4:23] Speaker 3: true and he put on his coat and jumped in
[4:26] Speaker 3: the water to swim to shore. Staying dry, the other
[4:30] Speaker 3: disciples brought the boat to shore where they saw a
[4:34] Speaker 3: fire with some food. Jesus invited them to sit and
[4:39] Speaker 3: eat with him. Peter brought some of the fish they
[4:42] Speaker 3: had caught, 153 to be exact, to Jesus and they
[4:44] Speaker 3: had breakfast together. This was the third occasion in which
[4:52] Speaker 3: Jesus was with his disciples since the resurrection. After breakfast,
[4:57] Speaker 3: Jesus and Peter took a walk on the beach. Jesus
[5:01] Speaker 3: asked Peter, but calling him Simon, Simon, do you love
[5:05] Speaker 3: me more than these? Peter said, Yes, Lord, you know
[5:10] Speaker 3: that I love you. Jesus replied, Take care of my lambs.
[5:16] Speaker 3: Jesus paused. Simon, Do you love me? Peter said, Yes, Lord.
[5:24] Speaker 3: You know that I love you. Jesus then said, Take
[5:28] Speaker 3: care of my sheep. A third time, Jesus asked, Simon,
[5:34] Speaker 3: do you love me? Peter was hurt that Jesus had
[5:38] Speaker 3: asked him the same question three times. Jesus continued to
[5:43] Speaker 3: talk to Peter and speak about his life when he
[5:45] Speaker 3: was younger. He was independent and could tie his own
[5:49] Speaker 3: belt and go where he wanted to go. But as
[5:52] Speaker 3: he grows older, there will be a time where people
[5:55] Speaker 3: will tie his hands and take him where he doesn't
[5:58] Speaker 3: want to go. Jesus spoke like this to hint to
[6:02] Speaker 3: Peter the way he would die and that he would
[6:06] Speaker 3: be glorifying God. He then looked at Peter and said, Come,
[6:12] Speaker 3: follow me.
[6:18] Speaker 1: Come follow me. Isn't it wonderful that one of the
[6:22] Speaker 1: last things Jesus said to Peter was exactly what he
[6:25] Speaker 1: had said when they first met? Even though so much
[6:29] Speaker 1: good and bad had happened in the three years Jesus
[6:33] Speaker 1: and Peter spent together, Jesus hadn't changed his mind. He
[6:37] Speaker 1: still wanted Peter to follow him. And even though Peter
[6:41] Speaker 1: had denied Jesus, he forgave him and made sure Peter
[6:45] Speaker 1: knew they were friends again. Jesus is pretty great like that.
[6:49] Speaker 1: When we disappoint him, he doesn't hold it against us
[6:53] Speaker 1: or tell us we're bad or stupid. He's kind and
[6:56] Speaker 1: patient and the very best kind of friend you could
[6:59] Speaker 1: ever have. How do I know? Well, let's look again
[7:03] Speaker 1: at what happened. First, we saw Jesus help Thomas, who
[7:07] Speaker 1: was one of Jesus's 12 special friends called the Disciples.
[7:13] Speaker 1: Thomas had seen Jesus feed 5,000 people with only two
[7:17] Speaker 1: fish and five loaves of bread. He watched Jesus heal
[7:22] Speaker 1: blind men and bleeding women. He knew Jesus raised Lazarus
[7:27] Speaker 1: from the dead. But when all the other disciples said
[7:31] Speaker 1: that Jesus had raised himself from the dead, Thomas didn't
[7:34] Speaker 1: believe it. He said, no way, not possible. Now, how
[7:40] Speaker 1: do you remember what one of God's biggest goals all
[7:44] Speaker 1: throughout the Bible had been? From leaving Egypt to running
[7:47] Speaker 1: a kingdom to living in Babylon, no matter what the
[7:51] Speaker 1: children of Israel faced, God wanted them to do one thing.
[7:55] Speaker 1: Do you know what it was? Yes, God wanted them
[7:59] Speaker 1: to trust him. The Lord showed over and over again
[8:04] Speaker 1: that no matter what the situation looked like, His people
[8:09] Speaker 1: could have faith and trust that God would keep his promises.
[8:13] Speaker 1: And that's what Thomas was having a hard time with.
[8:16] Speaker 1: He trusted what he saw with his eyeballs more than
[8:19] Speaker 1: what he knew about God in his heart. Thomas didn't
[8:22] Speaker 1: have faith. He didn't trust that Jesus would come back
[8:25] Speaker 1: like he said he would, even when everyone else said
[8:28] Speaker 1: it was true. But did Jesus get mad and yell
[8:32] Speaker 1: at Thomas? Did he reject Thomas or ignore him? No! No!
[8:38] Speaker 1: He was kind and patient. He was the very best
[8:41] Speaker 1: kind of friend Thomas could ever have. Jesus showed Thomas
[8:45] Speaker 1: the proof he needed to believe, his very own scars.
[8:50] Speaker 1: And then, do you remember what he said? Jesus said,
[8:54] Speaker 1: because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are
[8:58] Speaker 1: those who have not seen and have believed. Wow, do
[9:03] Speaker 1: you know who Jesus was talking about?
[9:05] Speaker 3: It's you!
[9:07] Speaker 1: Jesus mentions you right here in the Bible because you
[9:11] Speaker 1: haven't seen his hands or his feet with your eyeballs,
[9:15] Speaker 1: but you believe in your heart that he's real and
[9:18] Speaker 1: he loves you. Now let's look at Peter. Peter believed
[9:23] Speaker 1: Jesus was alive, but he knew he had disappointed his Lord.
[9:28] Speaker 1: Just like Thomas, Peter had seen Jesus do amazing things,
[9:34] Speaker 1: but when he felt scared, Peter didn't trust God either.
[9:38] Speaker 1: He said, Jesus who? When someone asked if they were friends.
[9:43] Speaker 1: I'll bet he felt pretty bad about that, don't you?
[9:47] Speaker 1: Have you ever hurt someone else's feelings and wish you
[9:49] Speaker 1: could take it back? Yeah, me too. That's how Jesus
[9:54] Speaker 1: was feeling. But do you see how Jesus responded? He
[9:58] Speaker 1: didn't say, Peter, you messed He did something very special.
[10:02] Speaker 1: He reminded Peter how they became friends in the first place.
[10:14] Speaker 1: The time Jesus told Peter to fish, Peter caught so
[10:17] Speaker 1: many fish, the boats couldn't even carry them all. And now,
[10:21] Speaker 1: when Peter was wishing he could take back everything he
[10:24] Speaker 1: said and did, Jesus gives him the same gift he
[10:28] Speaker 1: gave Peter years before, a boatload of fish. And Peter
[10:33] Speaker 1: got the message that no matter what you do, God
[10:36] Speaker 1: is kind and patient and the very best friend you
[10:39] Speaker 1: could ever have. Because Jesus is pretty great like that.
