[2:16] Speaker 2: David writing wrongs. In our last story, Sheba leads the
[2:21] Speaker 2: people away from Israel, and David wants to hunt down Sheba.
[2:26] Speaker 2: In this story, we learn about a famine in the land,
[2:30] Speaker 2: and how David makes restitution to the Gibeonites. David collects
[2:35] Speaker 2: the bones of Saul and Jonathan, and again more war
[2:39] Speaker 2: against the Philistines breaks out, as inspired by 2 Samuel.
[2:47] Speaker 1: Hi friends, it's Julia Sadler here. I'm so glad to
[2:50] Speaker 1: have you here today. You are back for Kids Bible
[2:54] Speaker 1: in a Year podcast. Today, David is going to teach
[2:58] Speaker 1: us yet another lesson, but this time it has to
[3:03] Speaker 1: do with waiting and silence. So what are we going
[3:11] Speaker 1: to do? Let's jump in.
[3:17] Speaker 2: There was no food in the land of Israel for
[3:20] Speaker 2: three years. David first believed it was just a natural
[3:24] Speaker 2: event until he realized that it was coming from God.
[3:29] Speaker 2: So he asked the Lord what was going on, and
[3:32] Speaker 2: the Lord told him, It is because of what Saul
[3:36] Speaker 2: did to the Gibeonites. The tabernacles of God, the place
[3:40] Speaker 2: where God dwelled, was in the land called Gibeon. where
[3:44] Speaker 2: the Ark of God, which contained the stone writing of
[3:46] Speaker 2: the Ten Commandments, was in Jerusalem, so that the people
[3:50] Speaker 2: could worship God in two different places. When Joshua was alive,
[3:55] Speaker 2: the people who lived in Gibeon, or the Gibeonites, made
[3:58] Speaker 2: a deal with Israel. But King Saul ignored their agreements
[4:03] Speaker 2: and decided to wipe out all of the Gibeonite people.
[4:06] Speaker 2: He tried to kill every one of them so they
[4:09] Speaker 2: would no longer exist. David went to the Gibeonites that
[4:13] Speaker 2: were not destroyed and said, Our people have wronged you.
[4:18] Speaker 2: How can we make it better and be at peace
[4:21] Speaker 2: with you again? They replied, Money cannot make up for
[4:25] Speaker 2: Saul killing our brothers and sisters. And we are too weak,
[4:29] Speaker 2: and there is too little of us to bring revenge
[4:32] Speaker 2: on Israel. But we are not mad at all the
[4:36] Speaker 2: people who live in Israel. We are only angry at
[4:40] Speaker 2: the man who tried to destroy all of us. David asked,
[4:45] Speaker 2: So how can we help you? The people said, Give
[4:50] Speaker 2: us seven of Saul's male family members. We are going
[4:54] Speaker 2: to kill them in his hometown, near where the people
[4:57] Speaker 2: worship God. David agreed and got two of Saul's sons
[5:03] Speaker 2: and five of his grandsons because of a promise David
[5:07] Speaker 2: made with one of Saul's sons, Jonathan, He did not
[5:10] Speaker 2: choose his son Mephisbosheth to be killed. So the Gibeonites
[5:14] Speaker 2: killed those men and put their bodies on a hill
[5:18] Speaker 2: close to where the people went to worship. David went
[5:21] Speaker 2: to the city where Saul and his son Jonathan were
[5:24] Speaker 2: buried to get their bones. He then buried them with
[5:28] Speaker 2: the seven other men in their family tomb. After all
[5:33] Speaker 2: of this happened, David went to God in prayer about
[5:36] Speaker 2: the land. God listened to him. and answered his prayers.
[5:42] Speaker 2: After a few years had passed, war was declared on
[5:45] Speaker 2: Israel by the Philistines. David led his men into battle
[5:49] Speaker 2: while fighting alongside them. During the fight, he became exhausted,
[5:55] Speaker 2: and one of Goliath's family members noticed. He planned on
[5:59] Speaker 2: killing David, and David wasn't at his strongest, because the
[6:02] Speaker 2: Philistine was a huge, strong man. He went to kill David,
[6:08] Speaker 2: But one of David's men stopped the giant and killed
[6:11] Speaker 2: him instead. David was then taken out of the fight,
[6:16] Speaker 2: and his men took an oath to him, saying, Never
[6:20] Speaker 2: again will you fight on the battlefield with us. You
[6:24] Speaker 2: are the lamp of Israel, and your light shall never
[6:28] Speaker 2: go out. After that day, David never went out to
[6:33] Speaker 2: war again.
[6:40] Speaker 1: Man, thank goodness David's friends were there to help him out.
[6:45] Speaker 1: Today's story begins with another famine in the land. Does
[6:49] Speaker 1: anyone else get hungry when we talk about the famines?
[6:53] Speaker 1: I do. There was no food in Israel and things
[6:57] Speaker 1: were not looking up. God's people were getting scared and
[7:01] Speaker 1: most likely praying daily for God's help. But it seemed
[7:06] Speaker 1: as though God wasn't answering. It seemed as though they
[7:10] Speaker 1: were in the dark, waiting. Finally, David realizes that maybe
[7:16] Speaker 1: God is being quiet for a reason. But what could
[7:20] Speaker 1: it be? David does something smart when he doesn't think
[7:24] Speaker 1: his prayers are being answered. He gets very still and
[7:29] Speaker 1: asks God to answer his prayers. And when he asks,
[7:34] Speaker 1: he also listens very closely with his heart. Like David,
[7:40] Speaker 1: there will be many times in life when you feel
[7:44] Speaker 1: like God is not answering a prayer. It may feel
[7:48] Speaker 1: a little like you are in the dark too. Maybe
[7:52] Speaker 1: someone you love is sick and you're begging God for healing.
[7:57] Speaker 1: Maybe you have a big problem that you don't know
[8:00] Speaker 1: how to solve. Maybe you want something or just need
[8:04] Speaker 1: help doing something that's hard for you. In the Bible,
[8:09] Speaker 1: we see a great example of this in the life
[8:12] Speaker 1: of Job. He had some terrible things happen to him,
[8:17] Speaker 1: and he was begging God to answer and help. But
[8:21] Speaker 1: all he heard was silence and more silence. In fact,
[8:27] Speaker 1: in the first 37 chapters of the book of Job,
[8:31] Speaker 1: God is completely silent until he finally speaks. That's a
[8:36] Speaker 1: long time. Sometimes it can be hard to understand why
[8:41] Speaker 1: God would want to stay quiet and not answer our prayers.
[8:46] Speaker 1: Doesn't he care? Yes, of course he does. And you
[8:52] Speaker 1: can ask him. You can ask, why aren't you answering this?
[8:56] Speaker 1: And you can tell God, ask God, please help me
[9:00] Speaker 1: to stay strong while I wait for you. There are
[9:04] Speaker 1: different reasons why God may not be saying yes to
[9:08] Speaker 1: your prayers right now. One reason might be that it's
[9:12] Speaker 1: not what's best for you, even if you think it is.
[9:17] Speaker 1: He may have things he wants to teach you while
[9:20] Speaker 1: you wait. God always gives us what we need. So
[9:25] Speaker 1: if we don't need it, that's a reason we don't
[9:29] Speaker 1: have it. He never denies us what we need. to
[9:34] Speaker 1: be close to him. He may want to work on
[9:38] Speaker 1: your heart in ways you can't understand right now. Other
[9:42] Speaker 1: times God may not answer because he might be waiting
[9:46] Speaker 1: for you to make something right. Maybe you have sinned
[9:51] Speaker 1: or there's something you too need to talk about first.
[9:55] Speaker 1: Maybe there's something wrong he wants to show you. This
[9:59] Speaker 1: was the case for david remember joshua years ago he
[10:04] Speaker 1: had made a promise to a people called the gibeonites
[10:10] Speaker 1: when saul became king he broke that promise on behalf
[10:13] Speaker 1: of god's people so god wanted david to go make
[10:18] Speaker 1: things right again And thankfully, David obeyed. He went to
[10:23] Speaker 1: the Gibeonites, apologized, and did what they asked him to do.
[10:28] Speaker 1: And guess what? After that, the Bible tells us that
[10:31] Speaker 1: David prayed to God again, and God answered. No more famine.
[10:39] Speaker 1: The story ends with a familiar rival. Those Philistines are back.
[10:44] Speaker 1: But this time, some of Goliath's relatives are after David.
[10:49] Speaker 1: The Bible says that David was getting older and pretty tired.
[10:53] Speaker 1: He couldn't fight like he used to. So David's servants
[10:57] Speaker 1: fought for him. When David had no strength left to
[11:02] Speaker 1: keep going, his friends gave him their strength and fought
[11:06] Speaker 1: for him. This is one of the best things about
[11:09] Speaker 1: being in the family of God and connected to the
[11:13] Speaker 1: local church. As brothers and sisters in Christ, we can
[11:18] Speaker 1: help each other We can be strong when a friend
[11:22] Speaker 1: is weak or let others help us when we're too
[11:25] Speaker 1: tired to keep going. We close today's story with God's
[11:29] Speaker 1: people comparing David to a lamp whose light will never
[11:33] Speaker 1: go out. I love that. And that's not all. From
[11:38] Speaker 1: David's family, we would soon have someone come who would
[11:43] Speaker 1: be called the light of the world, Jesus. And when
[11:48] Speaker 1: we walk with him, we're never in dark. Thanks for
[11:52] Speaker 1: listening today. Next time, David is going to learn a
[11:55] Speaker 1: hard lesson about pride. And we will too. Remember, the
[12:00] Speaker 1: Bible is the best story ever told. It's God's story
[12:05] Speaker 1: to you. And it's all true. If this podcast brought
[12:10] Speaker 1: you joy and seems like something you want to share
[12:12] Speaker 1: with other parents and kids, don't hesitate to share it
