[1:10] Speaker 3: True Prophecy In our last story, we learned how Jesus
[1:16] Speaker 3: was betrayed by Judas and arrested. The disciples also fled.
[1:21] Speaker 3: In this story, we will learn about Peter's denial and Jesus'
[1:25] Speaker 3: trial in front of the high priests and elders. as
[1:28] Speaker 3: inspired by the Gospels.
[1:32] Speaker 1: Hey friends, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress Sadler.
[1:37] Speaker 1: Thank you for joining me for the Kids Bible in
[1:39] Speaker 1: a Year podcast. Well, here we are. Jesus has been
[1:43] Speaker 1: arrested and is now before the courts. They are laughing
[1:48] Speaker 1: at him, spitting on him, slapping him, and whipping him.
[1:53] Speaker 1: Yet Jesus, in obedience, keeps taking another step forward towards
[1:58] Speaker 1: his death. All because of his love for you and
[2:02] Speaker 1: for me.
[2:03] Speaker 3: Let's listen. When they arrested Jesus, they took him to
[2:09] Speaker 3: the house of the high priest Annas. Meanwhile, the high
[2:13] Speaker 3: priest was asking Jesus questions about what he taught his followers.
[2:19] Speaker 3: Jesus responded to him by saying that he has an
[2:22] Speaker 3: open message throughout his teachings, which took place mainly in temples.
[2:27] Speaker 3: He explained that he had nothing to hide and was
[2:31] Speaker 3: curious as to why the high priest felt the need
[2:34] Speaker 3: to question him, especially since everything was out in the
[2:38] Speaker 3: open with him.
[2:39] Speaker 2: One of the government officials.
[2:41] Speaker 3: Slapped Jesus for his response and said, Are you allowed
[2:46] Speaker 3: to speak to a high priest that way? Jesus then
[2:50] Speaker 3: said that if there was anything that was wrong about
[2:53] Speaker 3: what he said, that he wants them to show him
[2:55] Speaker 3: what was wrong with it. He was asked as to
[2:59] Speaker 3: why he was slapped, if in fact he was telling
[3:02] Speaker 3: the truth. Then Annas sent him off to Caiaphas. Peter
[3:06] Speaker 3: was able to follow behind them from a distance. There
[3:10] Speaker 3: were people who made a fire in the middle of town,
[3:13] Speaker 3: and Peter decided to join them. Little did he know
[3:17] Speaker 3: that a girl was going to ask him If he
[3:19] Speaker 3: knew the one that was being arrested, he answered her
[3:24] Speaker 3: and denied ever knowing Jesus. At Caiaphas' house, many people
[3:30] Speaker 3: were trying to find something wrong within Jesus or with
[3:34] Speaker 3: what he did so that they could kill him. They
[3:37] Speaker 3: could not find any evidence against him. The witnesses ended
[3:41] Speaker 3: up proving to be false and the people's stories did
[3:44] Speaker 3: not agree with each other. One testimony talked about how
[3:48] Speaker 3: Jesus was supposedly going to destroy the temple, to only
[3:51] Speaker 3: build it again, but not with the people's hands. The
[3:55] Speaker 3: high priest challenged Jesus and tried to get Jesus to
[3:59] Speaker 3: respond to these accusations. Then the guards had beaten him up.
[4:04] Speaker 3: Later on, another person had expressed that Peter was considered
[4:09] Speaker 3: one of them, and Peter, yet again, denied these accusations.
[4:15] Speaker 3: Before the Sanhedrin, Jesus stayed quiet while he was asked again,
[4:21] Speaker 3: Are you not the Son of Man? Jesus then replied
[4:26] Speaker 3: that he is and that he will be at the
[4:28] Speaker 3: right hand of the Father. The priest ripped his clothes
[4:33] Speaker 3: and proclaimed that what he was saying went against what
[4:36] Speaker 3: God said. The court agreed with the high priest and
[4:40] Speaker 3: condemned him to death.
[4:43] Speaker 2: There was another man.
[4:44] Speaker 3: Who said that Peter was one of the disciples. Peter
[4:48] Speaker 3: again denied these claims, and right after he said this,
[4:53] Speaker 3: a rooster crowed. Jesus made eye contact with Peter, and
[4:58] Speaker 3: he remembered that the Lord said he would deny three
[5:02] Speaker 3: times before the rooster crows.
[5:05] Speaker 2: And Peter ran away and wept.
[5:08] Speaker 3: The high priests and elders had decided early in the
[5:12] Speaker 3: morning how they wanted to kill Jesus. so they carried
[5:15] Speaker 3: him to Pilate's. Judas felt terrible after finding out that
[5:20] Speaker 3: they were executing Jesus and returned the money he made
[5:24] Speaker 3: from handing over Jesus. He confessed that he had sinned
[5:28] Speaker 3: by allowing the blood of someone who is innocent to
[5:32] Speaker 3: be shed. The high priests and elders said that it
[5:35] Speaker 3: was Judas' fault, and therefore he threw the money down
[5:39] Speaker 3: in the temple and went to hang himself.
[5:52] Speaker 1: Oh, Peter, I can't imagine how he felt when he
[5:55] Speaker 1: heard the rooster crow and his eyes met the eyes
[5:58] Speaker 1: of Jesus. It must have been awful. But Jesus would
[6:03] Speaker 1: soon forgive him, cook him breakfast, and make everything okay again. Okay,
[6:08] Speaker 1: more about that later. The soldiers have arrested Jesus, meaning
[6:13] Speaker 1: he is now with them as a prisoner and can't
[6:16] Speaker 1: leave until he has a trial. As they arrive at
[6:19] Speaker 1: the house of Caiaphas, a Jewish high priest says, Peter
[6:23] Speaker 1: followed closely behind. He slips over by the fire and
[6:27] Speaker 1: a young servant girl says, weren't you with Jesus? To
[6:31] Speaker 1: which he replies, no, I have no idea what you're
[6:34] Speaker 1: talking about. Denial number one. Meanwhile, Jesus is being beaten
[6:41] Speaker 1: pretty badly. By now, he was probably bleeding a lot
[6:45] Speaker 1: and feeling terrible. Someone else sees Peter and says, I
[6:49] Speaker 1: think he's one of them. Peter says, no, I'm not.
[6:54] Speaker 1: Denial number two. Then Caiaphas asked Jesus once and for all,
[7:01] Speaker 1: are you or are you not the Christ, the Son
[7:04] Speaker 1: of God? And Jesus seals his fate as he says,
[7:09] Speaker 1: I am. You will see the Son of Man sitting
[7:12] Speaker 1: at the right hand of power and coming with the
[7:15] Speaker 1: clouds of the sky. That gives me chills. Immediately, Caiaphas says, blasphemy.
[7:25] Speaker 1: This was a crime in that day. It meant that
[7:27] Speaker 1: someone claimed to be God or said something very untrue
[7:31] Speaker 1: about God. And the crime of blasphemy was enough to
[7:35] Speaker 1: put someone to death. Next, the soldiers blindfolded Jesus. They
[7:41] Speaker 1: laugh at him, hit him in the face and say,
[7:44] Speaker 1: if you are God, tell us which one of us
[7:47] Speaker 1: hit you. Even then, Jesus continues to love us to
[7:52] Speaker 1: the end. Just as this is happening, someone else notices Peter. Hey,
[7:58] Speaker 1: he talks just like one of those followers of Jesus.
[8:02] Speaker 1: He must be one of them. Peter angrily snaps back.
[8:06] Speaker 1: I don't know the man. And then he hears it.
[8:11] Speaker 1: The rooster crows. Luke tells us that Jesus turns and
[8:15] Speaker 1: looks at Peter. Their eyes meet. These are the eyes
[8:20] Speaker 1: Peter has looked into for three years now. Eyes of love, compassion,
[8:26] Speaker 1: and now deep sorrow. Peter remembers the words of Jesus.
[8:32] Speaker 1: Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.
[8:37] Speaker 1: He runs and cries out bitterly. That just means it
[8:41] Speaker 1: was deep, hard, painful cry. He had denied and forsaken
[8:46] Speaker 1: his Lord. Jesus is then taken to Pilate, the Roman governor.
[8:51] Speaker 1: Since the Romans were the ones in charge, it wasn't
[8:54] Speaker 1: enough for the Jews to kill Jesus. They had to
[8:57] Speaker 1: convince the Romans that he deserved to die. Judas, the betrayer,
[9:03] Speaker 1: sees all of this taking place and has a quick
[9:06] Speaker 1: change of heart.
[9:06] Speaker 3: Now listen.
[9:17] Speaker 1: Many things in today's story were hard to hear. We
[9:21] Speaker 1: have spent so much time together on this podcast talking
[9:24] Speaker 1: about who Jesus was, what he taught, and how he
[9:28] Speaker 1: loves us. We have walked with him to Bethany, eaten
[9:32] Speaker 1: fish and bread with him on a hillside, heard him
[9:36] Speaker 1: calm a storm by speaking to the wind and waves,
[9:39] Speaker 1: laughed with him as children climbed up on his lap,
[9:43] Speaker 1: and praised him in the street. We have seen amazing
[9:47] Speaker 1: miracles and gotten to know his best friends. So hearing
[9:51] Speaker 1: stories like the one today can make us a bit sad.
[9:55] Speaker 1: But that's okay. In fact, it can be a good thing.
[9:58] Speaker 3: It means.
[10:00] Speaker 1: that we love Jesus and we don't want him to suffer.
[10:05] Speaker 1: It means that we are thankful for all he did
[10:07] Speaker 1: and we notice him and his sadness. It means that
[10:10] Speaker 1: we are sorry for our sin that brought all this
[10:13] Speaker 1: bad stuff.
[10:13] Speaker 3: Into the picture.
[10:15] Speaker 1: But here is the best news. In Hebrews 12-2, after
[10:20] Speaker 1: Jesus died and rose again, we hear a wonderful promise.
[10:25] Speaker 1: This verse tells us that Jesus endured the cross and
[10:28] Speaker 1: the suffering because there was great joy ahead of him.
[10:33] Speaker 1: The sadness and darkness and suffering would soon turn into
[10:37] Speaker 1: this incredible joy and peace for him and especially for us.
[10:43] Speaker 1: David in Psalm 35 says it this way, Weeping may
[10:47] Speaker 1: stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning.
[10:52] Speaker 1: We know that this is true because the Bible is
[10:54] Speaker 1: the best story ever told. It's God's story to you,
[10:58] Speaker 1: and it's all true. Thanks for being here. Next time,
[11:03] Speaker 1: the trial of Jesus continues, and he is sentenced to death.
[11:08] Speaker 1: God is making all things new, and joy is coming.
