[1:38] Speaker 3: Elijah at Mount Horeb. In our last story, Elijah showed
[1:44] Speaker 3: himself to Ahab and challenged all the prophets of Baal.
[1:48] Speaker 3: The god Baal gave no answer, but the Lord answered
[1:52] Speaker 3: Elijah's prayer with fire. In this story, after finding rest
[1:58] Speaker 3: and retreat at Mount Horeb, Elijah will discover the still,
[2:02] Speaker 3: small voice of God, as inspired by first kings.
[2:10] Speaker 1: Well, hi, it's Joyous Adler here with the Kids Bible
[2:14] Speaker 1: in a Year podcast. I'm so glad you're here today.
[2:18] Speaker 1: In this story, we hear what happened to Elijah after
[2:22] Speaker 1: his big, massive victory over the prophets of Baal. If
[2:27] Speaker 1: you think it's filled with cheering and clapping and confetti,
[2:31] Speaker 1: you might be surprised. Let's find out what actually happened.
[2:40] Speaker 3: Ahab told Jezebel everything that Elijah had done, including how
[2:45] Speaker 3: he took down all the prophets by the sword. Jezebel
[2:49] Speaker 3: was so aroused with anger that she sent a messenger
[2:53] Speaker 3: to Elijah, saying, Be on watch, because around this time tomorrow,
[2:58] Speaker 3: I will have you as dead as the prophets that
[3:01] Speaker 3: you took down by sword. Elijah was beyond terrified by
[3:05] Speaker 3: this message, and he ran for his life to Beersheba,
[3:09] Speaker 3: which is in the southern territory of Judah. Elijah left
[3:12] Speaker 3: his servant in Beersheba, but he decided to journey in
[3:16] Speaker 3: the wilderness. When Elijah was in the wilderness, he sat
[3:20] Speaker 3: down under a juniper tree with defeat in his heart.
[3:24] Speaker 3: He cried out to God saying, I've had enough, Lord.
[3:29] Speaker 3: Please take my life so I can be with my fathers.
[3:33] Speaker 3: Elijah had grown tired and he took a nap under
[3:36] Speaker 3: the juniper tree. Then, all of a sudden, an angel
[3:41] Speaker 3: appeared that woke him up from his sleep saying, Get
[3:45] Speaker 3: up and eat, Elijah. who was weak from his travels,
[3:49] Speaker 3: looked around for food, and laying at his head was
[3:52] Speaker 3: a freshly baked cake and a jar of water. Elijah
[3:57] Speaker 3: got up and ate, but then he went right back
[4:01] Speaker 3: to sleep. The angel came a second time and woke
[4:04] Speaker 3: him up again. The angel said to Elijah, Get up
[4:08] Speaker 3: and eat some more. This journey is not an easy one.
[4:12] Speaker 3: Elijah got up and did as the angel had said.
[4:16] Speaker 3: and he lived off of the strength that food provided
[4:19] Speaker 3: for forty days and forty nights on his journey to
[4:24] Speaker 3: Mount Horeb. When Elijah arrived at Mount Horeb, he lived
[4:28] Speaker 3: in a cave where the Lord spoke to him, saying, Elijah,
[4:33] Speaker 3: why are you here at Mount Horeb? Elijah said to
[4:37] Speaker 3: the Lord, I have been doing everything I can for
[4:40] Speaker 3: the Lord. The sons of Israel have dishonored your covenant,
[4:44] Speaker 3: destroyed your places of worship, and took down your prophets
[4:47] Speaker 3: with the sword. It is just me, God, that is left,
[4:52] Speaker 3: and I want to serve you. My life is being threatened.
[4:57] Speaker 3: The Lord said, Elijah, get out of this cave and
[5:01] Speaker 3: go stand on the mountain before the Lord. Then a
[5:06] Speaker 3: mighty wind came and was breaking the rocks off of
[5:09] Speaker 3: the mountains, but the Lord was not in the wind.
[5:14] Speaker 3: After the wind, there was an earthquake, But the Lord
[5:17] Speaker 3: was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake, a fire
[5:21] Speaker 3: broke out. But the Lord was not in the fire.
[5:26] Speaker 3: After all of this chaos, Elijah heard the sound of
[5:30] Speaker 3: a very gentle wind. So Elijah wrapped his face in
[5:34] Speaker 3: his cloak and stood at the entrance of the cave.
[5:38] Speaker 3: A gentle voice spoke to Elijah and asked, Elijah, why
[5:44] Speaker 3: are you here at Mount Horeb? Elijah said, I have
[5:48] Speaker 3: been doing everything I can for the Lord. The sons
[5:51] Speaker 3: of Israel have dishonored your covenant, destroyed your places of worship,
[5:55] Speaker 3: and took down your prophets with the sword. It is
[5:58] Speaker 3: just me, God, that is left, and I want to
[6:02] Speaker 3: serve you, but my life is being threatened. The Lord said, Elijah,
[6:08] Speaker 3: get out of here and do what I command you.
[6:12] Speaker 3: Go and anoint Haziel. to be king over Aram. Anoint
[6:18] Speaker 3: Jehu to be king over Israel, and anoint Elisha to
[6:22] Speaker 3: be prophet in your place. I have seven thousand people
[6:28] Speaker 3: in Israel who have yet to bow down to Baal.
[6:32] Speaker 3: Elijah left Mount Horeb and saw Elisha plowing a field,
[6:37] Speaker 3: so he threw his cloak on him. Elisha left his
[6:40] Speaker 3: field and ran after Elijah, saying, Please, just let me
[6:45] Speaker 3: kiss my father and mother goodbye and I will follow you,
[6:49] Speaker 3: Elijah said. Go back and do what you have to do,
[6:53] Speaker 3: but do not forget what just happened to you. Elisha
[6:59] Speaker 3: returned to his home where he sacrificed all of his
[7:02] Speaker 3: tools for plowing fields. He killed his oxen and gave
[7:07] Speaker 3: it to his family for food. When he was done,
[7:11] Speaker 3: he left everything to follow Sometimes we feel scared and alone,
[7:21] Speaker 3: don't we?
[7:22] Speaker 1: In today's story, we saw that Elijah, who had just
[7:26] Speaker 1: seen God do something super spectacular, felt scared and alone too.
[7:33] Speaker 1: And we heard what God did to make him feel better.
[7:37] Speaker 1: Do you remember? Elijah had just defeated the false prophets
[7:42] Speaker 1: of Baal. There'd been a showdown to see whether the
[7:46] Speaker 1: Lord or Baal was the real God. And the Lord
[7:51] Speaker 1: won in a big way. Everyone who'd believed in Baal
[7:56] Speaker 1: was so embarrassed, except Queen Jezebel. She was really mad.
[8:03] Speaker 1: She said, I'm going to get that Elijah if it's
[8:07] Speaker 1: the last thing I do. And even though Elijah had
[8:12] Speaker 1: just seen God do something super spectacular, he got scared.
[8:18] Speaker 1: So scared that he ran away. He ran and he
[8:22] Speaker 1: ran and he ran. When he couldn't run anymore, he
[8:27] Speaker 1: sat down under a tiny little tree in the desert
[8:31] Speaker 1: and prayed, God, I'm done. Please just let me die.
[8:37] Speaker 1: Then he fell asleep. When he awoke, he saw God
[8:41] Speaker 1: had left him some food. Elijah ate it and went
[8:45] Speaker 1: back to sleep. You see, sometimes when you feel like Elijah,
[8:51] Speaker 1: sad or scared or alone, the best thing for you
[8:54] Speaker 1: to do is have a snack and a nap. In fact,
[9:00] Speaker 1: that's the first way God helped Elijah feel better. And
[9:04] Speaker 1: it worked. After one more snack from God, Elijah gained
[9:09] Speaker 1: enough strength to walk for 40 days and 40 nights
[9:14] Speaker 1: all the way to Mount Horeb. Why do you think
[9:18] Speaker 1: Elijah walked all the way to that mountain? Well, Mount
[9:24] Speaker 1: Horeb is a very special spot. It's where Moses heard
[9:28] Speaker 1: God calling to him from out of the Elijah knew
[9:34] Speaker 1: that was a place where God spent time with his people.
[9:38] Speaker 1: And that's the second way God helped Elijah feel better,
[9:43] Speaker 1: by spending time with him. Because when you're sad or
[9:47] Speaker 1: scared or alone, nothing makes you feel better than time
[9:51] Speaker 1: with God. You don't have to find a mountain to
[9:56] Speaker 1: do it. You can read your Bible or sing worship
[10:01] Speaker 1: songs or listen to the stories like this one. When
[10:05] Speaker 1: you spend time with God, it makes Him so happy
[10:09] Speaker 1: because He loves you very, very much. And when you
[10:14] Speaker 1: spend time with God and He reminds you that He
[10:17] Speaker 1: loves you very, very much... You feel happy too. When
[10:22] Speaker 1: Elijah spent time with God on that mountain, God spoke
[10:26] Speaker 1: to him in a very special way. Do you remember? First,
[10:31] Speaker 1: Elijah felt a mighty wind like a tornado. The trees
[10:36] Speaker 1: cracked and the sand blew and everything was so loud.
[10:41] Speaker 1: But God was not in the wind. God doesn't need
[10:45] Speaker 1: to shout to be heard. Then there was an earthquake.
[10:50] Speaker 1: The earth rumbled and the rocks tumbled and Elijah couldn't
[10:53] Speaker 1: even stand up. Everything was falling apart. But God was
[10:59] Speaker 1: not in the earthquake. God doesn't need to shake us
[11:03] Speaker 1: to get our attention. After that came a roaring fire.
[11:09] Speaker 1: The flames flickered and blazed and smoldered and smoked and
[11:14] Speaker 1: everything was melting. But God was not in the fire.
[11:18] Speaker 1: God doesn't burn things down to turn us toward him.
[11:23] Speaker 1: After the wind, the earthquake, and the fire, there came
[11:27] Speaker 1: a soft, soft breath, like a whisper. It was the
[11:34] Speaker 1: sound of God sitting quietly next to Elijah, because that's
[11:38] Speaker 1: what God does when we're feeling sad or scared or alone.
[11:44] Speaker 1: In that still, silent moment, God reminded Elijah that he
[11:49] Speaker 1: loved him very, very much. Then he gave him one
[11:54] Speaker 1: last way to feel better. Do you remember? God told
[11:59] Speaker 1: Elijah to go find Elisha a friend. Someone to share
[12:04] Speaker 1: his work and life with. Sometimes in life, you might
[12:09] Speaker 1: feel sad, scared, or alone. When you do remember... What
[12:15] Speaker 1: God gave Elijah to make him feel better. A snack,
[12:20] Speaker 1: a nap, a friend, and best of all, time with
[12:24] Speaker 1: God himself. Those things will make you feel better too.
[12:30] Speaker 1: I'm so happy you joined me today. Come back next
[12:33] Speaker 1: time to find out what happened when greedy King Ahab
[12:38] Speaker 1: wanted something that wasn't his. And God said no. Remember,
