[0:00] Speaker 1: For there stood by me this night an angel, belonging
[0:04] Speaker 1: to the God whose I am and whom I serve, saying,
[0:09] Speaker 1: Don't be afraid, Paul, you must stand before Caesar. Behold,
[0:14] Speaker 1: God has granted you all those who sail with you.
[0:18] Speaker 1: Acts 27 23 Dear God, thank you for the special
[0:24] Speaker 1: ways in which you speak to us and provide for
[0:27] Speaker 1: us when we need you the most. Paul must have
[0:31] Speaker 1: been so scared on that boat, and you sent your
[0:34] Speaker 1: angel to comfort him. You love your children so very much.
[0:39] Speaker 1: Thank you for showing up in the middle.
[0:41] Speaker 2: Of our storms. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

[1:22] Speaker 4: The mighty storm in our last story. Festus replaced Felix
[1:28] Speaker 4: as governor, and so Paul stood before him. Paul appealed
[1:32] Speaker 4: to Caesar and pled his case before King Agrippa, explaining
[1:36] Speaker 4: his testimony. Agrippa said, Paul could have been freed, but
[1:40] Speaker 4: he appealed to Caesar, so we.
[1:42] Speaker 1: Must send him there.
[1:43] Speaker 4: In this story, Paul is sent to Rome and will
[1:48] Speaker 4: experience a terrible storm and shipwreck on the way, as.
[1:53] Speaker 2: Inspired by Acts.
[1:58] Speaker 1: Welcome back, everyone. It's Julia here with another episode of
[2:02] Speaker 1: Kids Bible in a Year podcast. Today, Paul finds himself
[2:06] Speaker 1: in the middle of an awful storm. Hasn't he been
[2:10] Speaker 1: through enough?
[2:12] Speaker 2: Don't worry.
[2:13] Speaker 1: God is not leaving him high and dry. An angel
[2:16] Speaker 1: is showing up once again to comfort him and show
[2:19] Speaker 1: him the way.
[2:21] Speaker 2: Here we go.
[2:21] Speaker 4: It was decided that Paul would go on a boat
[2:27] Speaker 4: trip to Rome. and be watched by a Roman officer
[2:29] Speaker 4: named Julius. Julius was a part of the emperor's army,
[2:33] Speaker 4: so he was in charge of prisoners. Paul got on
[2:36] Speaker 4: the boat, and the crew began to set sail on
[2:39] Speaker 4: the water. The ship was supposed to stop at many
[2:42] Speaker 4: harbors along the coast of Asia, but because of bad storms,
[2:46] Speaker 4: even though Paul was technically a prisoner, Julius was very
[2:49] Speaker 4: kind to him and gave him a lot of freedom.
[2:53] Speaker 4: Julius told Paul that whenever they got to shore, he
[2:56] Speaker 4: could go see his friends who would take care of
[2:58] Speaker 4: whatever he needed. After a while of hard sailing, the
[3:02] Speaker 4: crew put down an anchor at the harbor of Fairhaven,
[3:06] Speaker 4: which was on the island of Crete. They had lost
[3:09] Speaker 4: a lot of time taking a break at the port,
[3:12] Speaker 4: but now it was too dangerous to leave.
[3:14] Speaker 2: It was wintertime, which meant.
[3:16] Speaker 4: There was a lot of bad storms happening on the sea.
[3:20] Speaker 4: Paul looked at Julius and told him, You have to
[3:23] Speaker 4: tell the captain that we can't sail anymore. We need
[3:26] Speaker 4: to wait. If we don't wait, then there will be
[3:29] Speaker 4: a lot of trouble. The ship and everything on it
[3:31] Speaker 4: will be lost. We could die. The captain of the
[3:34] Speaker 4: ship and Julius disagreed with Paul and said that they
[3:37] Speaker 4: would be sailing anyway. The captain thought that Fairhaven wasn't
[3:41] Speaker 4: a good place to stay anyway and that they were
[3:44] Speaker 4: better off leaving. So they all got back on the
[3:46] Speaker 4: ship and decided to go back to sea. All of
[3:50] Speaker 4: a sudden, a huge storm came over the sea. It
[3:52] Speaker 4: was so strong that it pulled them away from the
[3:55] Speaker 4: coast and into the middle of the ocean. The winds
[3:58] Speaker 4: were very strong, and there was thunder so loud it
[4:01] Speaker 4: hurt their ears. This storm went on, so the crew
[4:05] Speaker 4: threw all of their stuff off the ship. They threw
[4:08] Speaker 4: anything else they could find off the ship as well.
[4:12] Speaker 4: Everyone was beginning to get upset, thinking that there was
[4:15] Speaker 4: nothing else they could do, and they would just die.
[4:18] Speaker 4: Paul looked at everyone on the boat. I told you
[4:21] Speaker 4: guys that it was a bad idea to leave Crete.
[4:24] Speaker 4: You guys didn't listen to what I said, but you
[4:27] Speaker 4: were lucky. An angel came to me last night with
[4:29] Speaker 4: a message from God. He told me there is no
[4:32] Speaker 4: reason to be afraid. You will make it through the storm.
[4:36] Speaker 4: You will talk to Caesar. No one will die in
[4:39] Speaker 4: this storm. God never lies. We are all going to
[4:43] Speaker 4: be okay, but we will not make it with the ship.
[4:47] Speaker 4: The storm lasted for two weeks. At the end of
[4:50] Speaker 4: the last day, The sailors saw the shore. They put
[4:53] Speaker 4: down an anchor so they wouldn't crash into the shore.
[4:56] Speaker 4: The crew began to prepare to pull the boat onto
[4:59] Speaker 4: the shore. They were putting down lifeboats so that they
[5:02] Speaker 4: could get off the ship sooner. Paul noticed this.
[5:05] Speaker 2: If anyone leaves the ship, we will die. Don't leave.
[5:09] Speaker 4: They listened to Paul this time and moved away from
[5:12] Speaker 4: the lifeboats. Everyone on the ship was just hoping that
[5:16] Speaker 4: the morning would come faster. Right before the sun came up,
[5:20] Speaker 4: Paul looked at all the men on the boat. We
[5:22] Speaker 4: haven't eaten in two weeks, so why don't we eat now?
[5:26] Speaker 4: We're going to need to have full stomachs when we
[5:28] Speaker 4: finally get on land to walk. Paul found some bread
[5:31] Speaker 4: on the ship and said a thank you prayer to
[5:33] Speaker 4: God before taking a big bite.
[5:36] Speaker 3: Everyone did the same.
[5:38] Speaker 4: When the sun was finally up, they could see the shore.
[5:41] Speaker 4: The captain of the boat saw somewhere they could dock
[5:43] Speaker 4: on the beach. They brought up the anchor and put
[5:46] Speaker 4: up their sails. Strong wind from the storm pulled them
[5:49] Speaker 4: closer and closer to the beach until they got to land.
[5:53] Speaker 4: As soon as they got the boat close to the shore,
[5:56] Speaker 4: the whole crew got nervous being around the prisoners. They
[5:59] Speaker 4: thought maybe they should kill the prisoners so they wouldn't
[6:02] Speaker 4: try to escape and run away. Julius, the Roman officer,
[6:06] Speaker 4: said not to kill anyone because he didn't want the
[6:09] Speaker 4: crew to kill Paul. Anyone who can swim, he said,
[6:13] Speaker 4: jump off the ship and swim to land. Anyone who
[6:16] Speaker 4: couldn't swim... found wood to use as flotation devices to
[6:20] Speaker 4: help them swim to shore. When everyone got in the water,
[6:23] Speaker 4: they all managed to get to the shore safely.
[6:33] Speaker 2: Scary, right? That was no little thunderstorm.
[6:37] Speaker 1: Paul is on the way to Rome to go before Caesar.
[6:41] Speaker 1: This would be a very long voyage. He was placed
[6:44] Speaker 1: on a boat with other prisoners, most likely guilty criminals,
[6:49] Speaker 1: who would be put to death in Rome. In all,
[6:52] Speaker 1: there were 276 people on board this big ship. And
[6:57] Speaker 1: right away, we meet a guard who seems to have
[7:00] Speaker 1: a soft spot for Paul. His name is Julius, and
[7:05] Speaker 1: he allows two friends of Paul to join him on
[7:08] Speaker 1: this journey. I bet Paul was so glad he didn't
[7:12] Speaker 1: have to do this alone.
[7:14] Speaker 2: By the way, one of those friends was Luke. How
[7:17] Speaker 2: do we know that?
[7:19] Speaker 1: Because he is the one writing the book of Acts,
[7:22] Speaker 1: telling us about all that had happened. As the ship sailed,
[7:26] Speaker 1: they hit some pretty bad weather, which made everything take
[7:30] Speaker 1: a lot longer. And because of that, it was now
[7:34] Speaker 1: almost winter. And that meant one thing, bad storms on
[7:39] Speaker 1: the sea. Paul knew this because he had already traveled
[7:43] Speaker 1: many miles on that sea as a missionary. In fact,
[7:47] Speaker 1: he had already been in three shipwrecks by this time.
[7:52] Speaker 1: That's why he told the guard and the captain they
[7:55] Speaker 1: needed to stay on shore for a while and wait
[7:58] Speaker 1: until winter passed. But no, they were determined to go anyway.
[8:04] Speaker 1: Sure enough, as they are sailing along the shore, a huge,
[8:08] Speaker 1: ginormous storm.
[8:09] Speaker 2: Comes out of nowhere.
[8:11] Speaker 1: The wind was so strong that they were pulled into
[8:14] Speaker 1: the middle of the ocean and lost all sight of
[8:18] Speaker 1: the sun, moon, and stars for a very long time.
[8:22] Speaker 1: This meant they didn't know where they were and the
[8:26] Speaker 1: storm was only getting worse. As we've walked through the
[8:29] Speaker 1: Bible on this journey together, this isn't the first time
[8:34] Speaker 1: we've seen God use a storm to teach us something.
[8:37] Speaker 1: It's not the first time we see Jesus showing up
[8:40] Speaker 1: in the middle of the wind and waves to bring
[8:43] Speaker 1: us comfort, peace, and direction. And he was about to
[8:48] Speaker 1: do it again. This time for Paul and his friends.
[8:52] Speaker 2: Well, here they are.
[8:54] Speaker 1: People are crying, panicking, throwing things overboard. This awful storm
[8:59] Speaker 1: had lasted two whole weeks and they just knew they
[9:03] Speaker 1: were going to die. until Paul stands up to speak.
[9:08] Speaker 1: I have to laugh at his first line.
[9:10] Speaker 2: He pretty much says, Well, I told you so.
[9:14] Speaker 1: You should have listened to me when I said this
[9:17] Speaker 1: was too dangerous to sail. But then he says something
[9:22] Speaker 1: that probably made everyone feel a whole lot better.
[9:24] Speaker 2: He says an angel appeared.
[9:27] Speaker 1: To him in the night and told him they would
[9:30] Speaker 1: make it to shore. And when God gives Paul a message,
[9:34] Speaker 1: he knows.
[9:35] Speaker 2: To believe it. But that's the thing. This was only
[9:38] Speaker 2: good news for the people who believed it.
[9:41] Speaker 1: Like Paul, if you ever hear God speak a promise
[9:44] Speaker 1: to your heart or read it in your Bible, believe it.
[9:48] Speaker 2: Stand on it. Rest in it. Hold on to it.
[9:51] Speaker 2: Sometimes it's the only way to not feel scared.
[9:53] Speaker 1: The angel had given Paul a promise.
[9:57] Speaker 2: In the middle of that ugly, scary storm.
[9:59] Speaker 1: He said, In other words, with God's help, the people
[10:00] Speaker 1: on board believed what Paul was saying and they did
[10:03] Speaker 1: what he said to do. God was using him still,
[10:19] Speaker 1: even in this terrible storm, to be the leader he
[10:23] Speaker 1: had called him to be. Because when you take what
[10:27] Speaker 1: God said and use it as your anchor, people will follow.
[10:32] Speaker 1: When you are going God's way, you can't go wrong. Well,
[10:36] Speaker 1: Paul and his friends make it to shore, but the
[10:39] Speaker 1: action isn't over. Paul is about to get bitten by
[10:43] Speaker 1: a big, yucky snake.
[10:45] Speaker 2: That's right.
[10:46] Speaker 1: Come back next time to hear what happens. And lastly,
[10:51] Speaker 1: the Bible is the best story ever told. It's God's
