[1:21] Speaker 3: Naboth's Vineyard. In the last story, Elijah retreats to Mount
[1:26] Speaker 3: Horeb and hears the still, small voice of God. And
[1:31] Speaker 3: Elijah is encouraged. In this story, we learn about Naboth's vineyard,
[1:37] Speaker 3: as inspired by 1 Kings.
[1:43] Speaker 1: Hi again, it's Joya Sadler with the Kids Bible in
[1:47] Speaker 1: a Year podcast. I'm so excited you're here with me.
[1:51] Speaker 1: Today we'll learn about greedy old King Ahab and how
[1:55] Speaker 1: he threw a temper tantrum when he didn't get what
[1:59] Speaker 1: he wanted. Let's listen to what happened.
[2:04] Speaker 3: Some time had passed, and there was an incident in
[2:07] Speaker 3: Jezreel involving a vineyard that belonged to a man named Naboth.
[2:13] Speaker 3: The vineyard was beside the place of Ahab, who was
[2:16] Speaker 3: king of Samaria. With Ahab being a man of authority,
[2:20] Speaker 3: he said to Naboth, Let me take rights over your vineyard.
[2:24] Speaker 3: and I will turn it into a beautiful vegetable garden
[2:27] Speaker 3: since it is so close to my palace. I offer
[2:31] Speaker 3: to give you an even better vineyard, or, if you prefer,
[2:35] Speaker 3: I would even pay you for the entire worth of
[2:39] Speaker 3: the vineyard. Naboth was not even amused by this offer.
[2:44] Speaker 3: You are crazy to even think I would sell you
[2:46] Speaker 3: this vineyard. This is not only my inheritance from my ancestors,
[2:51] Speaker 3: but the Lord forbids it as well. Ahab was so
[2:55] Speaker 3: disgusted with what Naboth told him that he could not
[2:59] Speaker 3: even eat. Jezebel, the wife of Ahab, was in disbelief
[3:04] Speaker 3: that this is how Ahab was acting like the king
[3:07] Speaker 3: of Israel. Jezebel said, Go ahead and eat up. Eat
[3:13] Speaker 3: some food if you cannot get the vineyard for yourself,
[3:16] Speaker 3: and I will get it for you. Jezebel wrote letters
[3:20] Speaker 3: in the name of Ahab, placed his personal seal on them,
[3:24] Speaker 3: and sent them to the elders and nobles living with
[3:27] Speaker 3: Naboth in his city. The letter she wrote read, Call
[3:32] Speaker 3: a fast for a day and have Naboth sit in
[3:35] Speaker 3: a well-known place among the people. But put two scam
[3:40] Speaker 3: artists in front of him and tell lies that Naboth
[3:43] Speaker 3: had cursed both God and the king. After that, take
[3:48] Speaker 3: him out and stone him until he is no more.
[3:52] Speaker 3: The elders and nobles did exactly what Jezebel said, and
[3:56] Speaker 3: when they were done, they sent a message to Jezebel
[3:59] Speaker 3: that Naboth had been stoned to death. When Jezebel heard
[4:03] Speaker 3: this news, she hurried to tell Ahab, saying, Arise, and
[4:07] Speaker 3: go take what is yours. Naboth, the Jezreelite who refused
[4:10] Speaker 3: to sell you the vineyard, is dead. As Ahab was
[4:14] Speaker 3: going to take possession of the vineyard, the word of
[4:17] Speaker 3: the Lord came to the prophet Elijah. The Lord said,
[4:21] Speaker 3: Go now and see Ahab. He is in the vineyard
[4:24] Speaker 3: of Naboth, and he is trying to take possession of it. Elijah,
[4:28] Speaker 3: let Ahab know that at the place the dogs licked
[4:31] Speaker 3: up the blood of Naboth, they will also lick up
[4:34] Speaker 3: the blood of Ahab. Ahab saw Elijah and said to him, Oh,
[4:39] Speaker 3: what a surprise, Elijah. My enemy has found me. Elijah responded,
[4:46] Speaker 3: The only reason I even came looking for you is
[4:49] Speaker 3: because you have sold yourself to evil as the king
[4:51] Speaker 3: of Israel. Here is what the Lord says. You have
[4:56] Speaker 3: brought me to anger, and because of that, I will
[4:59] Speaker 3: destroy you. I have not forgotten about your wife Jezebel either.
[5:04] Speaker 3: The dogs will eat Jezebel in the district of Jezreel.
[5:08] Speaker 3: Jezebel had put such an influence on Ahab that there
[5:11] Speaker 3: has never been anyone like him who sold himself to
[5:15] Speaker 3: do evil in the eyes of the Lord. When Ahab
[5:18] Speaker 3: realized what he had said, he ripped his clothes, put
[5:21] Speaker 3: on sackcloth, and began to fast. Ahab was ashamed of
[5:26] Speaker 3: what he had done, and the Lord noticed it. The
[5:29] Speaker 3: Lord spoke to Elijah, Ahab has really humbled himself before me.
[5:35] Speaker 3: I will not bring evil on him, but Ahab's son
[5:39] Speaker 3: will experience evil in his days.
[5:47] Speaker 1: In today's story, we learn that sometimes kings can act
[5:51] Speaker 1: more like children than children. In fact, I'll bet you
[5:56] Speaker 1: act way more grown up when you don't get your
[6:00] Speaker 1: way than King Ahab did when he didn't get his.
[6:03] Speaker 1: Do you remember what happened? Ahab was the king of Israel,
[6:08] Speaker 1: but he was a greedy king. Even though he lived
[6:12] Speaker 1: in a huge palace and had lots of land, food, Servants, soldiers, clothes, animals, jewels,
[6:20] Speaker 1: and gold, he wanted more. King Ahab wanted the vineyard,
[6:25] Speaker 1: or the grape garden, of his next-door neighbor, Naboth. Now
[6:30] Speaker 1: Naboth's vineyard had been in his family for generations. Before
[6:35] Speaker 1: it belonged to Naboth, it belonged to his father, and
[6:40] Speaker 1: his father before that, and his father before that. In fact,
[6:45] Speaker 1: as long as anyone could remember, that vineyard had been
[6:50] Speaker 1: in Naboth's family. And now King Ahab wanted to tear
[6:54] Speaker 1: it all down to grow vegetables. So when Ahab asked
[6:59] Speaker 1: for his vineyard, Naboth said no. And when the king
[7:03] Speaker 1: offered to exchange it for another one or pay him
[7:06] Speaker 1: more money, Naboth still said no. God had given that
[7:10] Speaker 1: vineyard to his family. To Naboth, it was priceless. Well,
[7:16] Speaker 1: greedy King Ahab didn't like that at all. He stomped
[7:19] Speaker 1: back to his palace. Then he stomped up the stairs,
[7:22] Speaker 1: stomped into his bedroom, put on his pajamas, and stomped
[7:26] Speaker 1: into his bed. Mean old Naboth, he muttered, forgetting that
[7:31] Speaker 1: he already owned several vineyards and land. And food and
[7:38] Speaker 1: servants and soldiers and clothes and animals and jewels and gold.
[7:44] Speaker 1: But Ahab wanted more. And since he didn't get his way,
[7:50] Speaker 1: he sulked and pouted and refused to get out of bed.
[7:55] Speaker 1: When his butler tried to bring him lunch, Ahab yelled,
[7:58] Speaker 1: I don't want it.
[8:00] Speaker 3: Go away.
[8:01] Speaker 1: When his general tried to discuss war plans with him,
[8:05] Speaker 1: Ahab shouted, I won't and you can't make me. Get out.
[8:11] Speaker 1: You know, many times in life, we don't get everything
[8:14] Speaker 1: we want. Your mom and dad has to say no
[8:17] Speaker 1: sometimes and that's okay. In fact, even God says no
[8:23] Speaker 1: to us sometimes. And when he does, that doesn't mean
[8:27] Speaker 1: he's being mean or he doesn't love you. It just
[8:30] Speaker 1: means God knows best and what will make you truly happy.
[8:35] Speaker 1: And that might not be the yes that you want
[8:38] Speaker 1: to hear. King Ahab eventually got the yes he wanted
[8:42] Speaker 1: to hear, but it wasn't from God and it didn't
[8:45] Speaker 1: make him truly happy. Ahab's wife Jezebel finally had enough
[8:51] Speaker 1: of his sulking. She said, Ahab, get out of bed
[8:55] Speaker 1: and eat something. I'll get Naboth's vineyard for you. And
[9:01] Speaker 1: that wicked Jezebel hatched an evil plan to kill poor Naboth.
[9:07] Speaker 1: Then she stole his vineyard and gave it to King Ahab.
[9:11] Speaker 1: Ahab happily clapped his hands and skipped next door to
[9:15] Speaker 1: organize his vegetables. But then Elijah, God's prophet, showed up.
[9:22] Speaker 1: And he had some bad, bad news for King Ahab.
[9:27] Speaker 1: Elijah said, Ahab, God saw everything you did. He won't
[9:32] Speaker 1: let you get away with it. Just as Jezebel killed Naboth,
[9:37] Speaker 1: she will die too. And you and your children will
[9:40] Speaker 1: suffer a lot. You see, God loves us too much
[9:46] Speaker 1: to let us get away with bad things. Sin makes
[9:49] Speaker 1: our hearts broken and ugly. So God has to say
[9:53] Speaker 1: no when we want to be greedy or take what
[9:57] Speaker 1: doesn't belong to us. I know. how much we pout
[10:02] Speaker 1: God won't give in he loves us too much I'm
[10:06] Speaker 1: so happy you joined me today come back next time
