[1:22] Speaker 3: Forgiving Sins In our last story, Jesus began to call
[1:28] Speaker 3: his disciples, healed a man with an evil spirit, and
[1:32] Speaker 3: also healed Peter's mother-in-law. In this story, we will learn
[1:37] Speaker 3: about Jesus healing a paralytic man and forgiving his sins,
[1:41] Speaker 3: and also calling Matthew, the tax collector, to be his follower,
[1:48] Speaker 3: as inspired by the Gospels.
[1:53] Speaker 1: Hello again, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress Sadler,
[1:58] Speaker 1: back here for another story from the Kids Bible in
[2:01] Speaker 1: a Year podcast. Jesus shows us something new about himself
[2:05] Speaker 1: in today's story, and it's pretty amazing. Listen close and
[2:11] Speaker 1: watch how he once again gives us a whole new
[2:15] Speaker 1: way to live.
[2:18] Speaker 3: Jesus traveled to a house in Capernaum. When people heard
[2:23] Speaker 3: that Jesus had come, they rushed to the house he
[2:26] Speaker 3: was staying in. So many people filled the house that
[2:30] Speaker 3: there was no room left. Many stood outside the house
[2:34] Speaker 3: just trying to get a glimpse of what was going on.
[2:38] Speaker 3: Jesus was teaching to the large crowd. Four men came
[2:43] Speaker 3: carrying their friend who was paralyzed and could not move.
[2:47] Speaker 3: The crowd was so large. the men could not get
[2:50] Speaker 3: their friend to Jesus. So they climbed up on the
[2:54] Speaker 3: house and made an opening in the roof above Jesus.
[2:59] Speaker 3: After digging through the roof, they lowered their paralyzed friend
[3:03] Speaker 3: on a mat. Jesus saw their faith and said to
[3:07] Speaker 3: the paralytic man, Son, your sins are forgiven. Right then,
[3:13] Speaker 3: the teachers of the law were upset at what Jesus
[3:16] Speaker 3: had done. They began thinking things like, Why.
[3:20] Speaker 2: Does this man talk like this?
[3:21] Speaker 3: He's blaspheming.
[3:23] Speaker 2: Only God can forgive sins.
[3:26] Speaker 3: Jesus knew in his heart what the teachers were thinking
[3:30] Speaker 3: in their hearts. So he said to them, It is
[3:33] Speaker 3: easier to say to the paralytic man, Get up, take
[3:37] Speaker 3: your mat, and walk. But I have forgiven this man,
[3:41] Speaker 3: so that you may know that the Son of Man
[3:44] Speaker 3: has authority on earth to forgive sins. Then he said
[3:49] Speaker 3: to the paralytic man, I tell you, get up, take
[3:54] Speaker 3: up your mat and go home. He quickly stood up,
[3:58] Speaker 3: picked up his mat and walked out of the house
[4:01] Speaker 3: in front of all of the people. This miracle amazed
[4:06] Speaker 3: everyone and they praised God saying, we have never seen
[4:11] Speaker 3: anything like this. Jesus went outside beside the lake. As
[4:17] Speaker 3: he walked, He saw a man named Levi, also known
[4:21] Speaker 3: as Matthew, sitting at the tax collector's booth. Jesus looked
[4:26] Speaker 3: to Matthew and said, Follow me. Matthew immediately stood up
[4:31] Speaker 3: and followed Jesus. Then Jesus joined Matthew and many other
[4:36] Speaker 3: tax collectors and sinners for dinner at Matthew's house. The
[4:41] Speaker 3: teachers of the law saw this and were shocked. They
[4:45] Speaker 3: asked Jesus' disciples, Why does your teacher eat with sinners?
[4:51] Speaker 3: Right when Jesus heard this, he said to them, The
[4:54] Speaker 3: healthy people do not need doctors. Doctors are for sick people.
[5:01] Speaker 3: I have come not for the righteous, but for the sinners.
[5:06] Speaker 3: I tell you, go and learn what this means. I
[5:11] Speaker 3: desire mercy, not sacrifice.
[5:20] Speaker 1: Well, as you can see, word about Jesus is spreading fast.
[5:25] Speaker 1: People want to be near him, and they want to
[5:27] Speaker 1: see if all the stories about him are true. That's
[5:32] Speaker 1: why this house where Jesus was teaching was so crowded.
[5:37] Speaker 1: We heard about four men who wanted their friend to
[5:41] Speaker 1: be healed. He couldn't walk, and they were desperate.
[5:45] Speaker 2: To get to Jesus.
[5:47] Speaker 1: So instead of fighting the crowds, These friends decided to
[5:51] Speaker 1: lower him through the roof. Wouldn't you have loved to
[5:54] Speaker 1: see this? And I don't know about you, but I
[5:58] Speaker 1: would love to have friends like that. Even better, I
[6:02] Speaker 1: would love to be a friend like that. Doing anything
[6:06] Speaker 1: I can to help people I love get closer to Jesus. Okay,
[6:11] Speaker 1: so Jesus knew that if these men went to that
[6:13] Speaker 1: much trouble to lower their friend down from the roof,
[6:17] Speaker 1: their faith must have been pretty strong. They must have
[6:21] Speaker 1: been sure that Jesus could heal him. So Jesus told
[6:25] Speaker 1: this man that his sins were forgiven because of his faith.
[6:30] Speaker 1: And that caused quite a scene. People already knew Jesus
[6:34] Speaker 1: could heal, but they didn't know that he could also
[6:38] Speaker 1: have the power and authority to forgive someone's sins.
[6:43] Speaker 3: Why?
[6:43] Speaker 1: Because Jesus is God. Some people doubted Jesus. but he
[6:48] Speaker 1: put their doubts to rest when he told the man
[6:51] Speaker 1: to get up and walk. Do you remember what Jesus said?
[6:56] Speaker 1: Go ahead and pick up your bed and walk right
[6:59] Speaker 1: on out of here. And he did. Jesus did this
[7:03] Speaker 1: to show the people and the teachers of the law
[7:06] Speaker 1: that he was not just a prophet of God doing
[7:08] Speaker 1: great things, but God himself with all the power and
[7:14] Speaker 1: authority of his father. As today's story closes, we meet
[7:19] Speaker 1: a new disciple named Levi. We know him as Matthew
[7:22] Speaker 1: because that's the new name Jesus gave him. We'll go
[7:25] Speaker 1: back to that in a minute. Levi was a tax collector,
[7:29] Speaker 1: a Jew working for the Romans whose job was to
[7:31] Speaker 1: collect money or taxes from the Jews. These tax collectors
[7:36] Speaker 1: would often cheat people and charge them for more than
[7:40] Speaker 1: what they owed, keeping the extra money for themselves. Because
[7:45] Speaker 1: of that, no one liked tax collectors very much. They
[7:49] Speaker 1: were seen as cheaters and usually didn't have many friends.
[7:54] Speaker 1: But when Jesus saw Levi and said, follow me, he
[7:58] Speaker 1: immediately obeyed. And to top it off, he was probably
[8:02] Speaker 1: shocked that Jesus came to his house for dinner that night.
[8:07] Speaker 1: When the Jewish leaders and teachers discovered this, they couldn't
[8:11] Speaker 1: understand why Jesus would choose to hang out with a
[8:13] Speaker 1: tax collector. Why are you with these sinners so much?
[8:17] Speaker 1: They asked. But Jesus' answer to that question was pretty great.
[8:22] Speaker 1: He asked a question right back to them, which he
[8:25] Speaker 1: did quite often. He said, who is more in need
[8:29] Speaker 1: of a doctor? Someone who's healthy or someone who's sick? Well,
[8:34] Speaker 1: of course the answer to that question is someone who's sick.
[8:38] Speaker 1: Jesus said in that same way, the reason he came
[8:41] Speaker 1: to earth was for sinners, people who needed him. not
[8:45] Speaker 1: for people who knew how to obey all the rules.
[8:49] Speaker 1: Here Jesus goes again, turning things upside down and surprising
[8:53] Speaker 1: us with the wisdom and love. Sometimes, like the Jewish leaders,
[8:57] Speaker 1: we only want to hang out around people who are
[9:00] Speaker 1: just like us. Now, that can be important too, because
[9:03] Speaker 1: we want our closest friends to be the ones that
[9:06] Speaker 1: love and follow God. But other times, God may want
[9:09] Speaker 1: us to spend time with those who don't know as
[9:12] Speaker 1: much about him.
[9:13] Speaker 2: Why?
[9:14] Speaker 1: Why? so we can tell them. Maybe there's someone on
[9:18] Speaker 1: your baseball team, in your dance class, or anyone else
[9:21] Speaker 1: that might like to spend time with you. And if
[9:24] Speaker 1: that person does not know Jesus, you could be the
[9:28] Speaker 1: one to tell them. Jesus changed Levi's name to Matthew,
[9:33] Speaker 1: which means gift of the Lord. He didn't see Matthew
[9:37] Speaker 1: as a sinful tax collector. He saw him as a
[9:40] Speaker 1: child of God and someone who would help him tell
[9:43] Speaker 1: the world of his love. That's all for today. Remember,
[9:48] Speaker 1: Jesus forgave Matthew of his sin, and he can forgive
[9:53] Speaker 1: you too. I hope you'll be back next time to
[9:56] Speaker 1: hear what a little bird and the hairs on your
[9:59] Speaker 1: head have in common. Here's a hint. He knows you
[10:02] Speaker 1: so well. Don't forget the Bible is the best story
[10:06] Speaker 1: ever told. It's God's story to you. And it's all true.
