[2:29] Speaker 3: Solomon, avenging the righteous. In our last story, Adonijah exalted
[2:36] Speaker 3: himself as the king, but David made sure to anoint
[2:40] Speaker 3: Solomon as king. In this story, David will give instructions
[2:45] Speaker 3: to Solomon As he begins to rule as king. And
[2:48] Speaker 3: he will carry them out. Inspired by First Kings.
[2:57] Speaker 1: Hi, this is Joya Sadler. Thanks for joining me today
[3:00] Speaker 1: for the Kids Bible in a Year podcast. Can you
[3:03] Speaker 1: believe it? Today we end our time with David. After
[3:08] Speaker 1: 40 years as king. He dies and leaves the throne
[3:13] Speaker 1: to his son Solomon. But before he goes, he has
[3:17] Speaker 1: some final words. Let's listen together.
[3:24] Speaker 3: When King David was about to die, he asked his
[3:27] Speaker 3: son for a special request. David said to Solomon, David
[3:35] Speaker 3: said this to Solomon so that he may be a
[3:38] Speaker 3: great king and prosper. David continued, The man named Joab
[3:44] Speaker 3: killed two commanders of Israel. The worst part is Joab
[3:49] Speaker 3: killed them during peaceful times, not a war, Solomon.
[3:54] Speaker 2: Use your wisdom to bring justice to Joab.
[3:59] Speaker 3: He must not be allowed to die peacefully, and he
[4:02] Speaker 3: must pay for his crimes. David had more to add
[4:07] Speaker 3: to his request. He continued. Also, I showed Shimi mercy
[4:14] Speaker 3: But after I showed him mercy, he called down curses
[4:18] Speaker 3: on me. Solomon, use your wisdom to bring justice to Shimei.
[4:24] Speaker 3: He also cannot be allowed to die peacefully. Not long
[4:29] Speaker 3: after David told his son Solomon all these things, David died.
[4:34] Speaker 3: After ruling Israel for 40 years, David was buried in
[4:39] Speaker 3: Jerusalem with his ancestors, and Solomon took over the throne.
[4:44] Speaker 3: Solomon had an older brother named Adonijah. Adonijah went to
[4:49] Speaker 3: Solomon's mother, Bathsheba, and asked her, Will you do me
[4:53] Speaker 3: a favor? Israel expected me as their king. I understand
[4:57] Speaker 3: my younger brother Solomon is king. I want to marry Abishag,
[5:02] Speaker 3: our father David's nurse. I need Solomon's permission to marry her.
[5:07] Speaker 3: And I want you to ask Solomon for me. You
[5:10] Speaker 3: are his mother, and he will not refuse you. Adonijah
[5:15] Speaker 3: wanted to marry Abishag because that may help him win
[5:18] Speaker 3: over the kingdom of Israel from Solomon. When Solomon's mother
[5:22] Speaker 3: Bathsheba told Solomon about Adonijah's request, Solomon was furious. Solomon
[5:28] Speaker 3: knew Adonijah wanted to marry Abishag because Adonijah wished to
[5:33] Speaker 3: take over the kingdom, and marrying Abishag would help with
[5:37] Speaker 3: his takeover. Solomon ordered a man named Benaiah to kill Adonijah.
[5:43] Speaker 3: and Benaiah obeyed. Adonijah also had the support of the
[5:47] Speaker 3: high priest and Joab, the man Solomon was planning on killing.
[5:53] Speaker 3: King Solomon removed the high priest from his job. Before
[5:58] Speaker 3: Solomon could kill Joab, Joab fled because he knew he
[6:01] Speaker 3: was being targeted. Joab fled to the tent of the
[6:05] Speaker 3: Lord and hid there. Joab was hoping they would not
[6:08] Speaker 3: kill him in that place because of how special it was.
[6:13] Speaker 3: When Benaiah arrived, he told Joab to get out. Joab refused,
[6:19] Speaker 3: and he told Benaiah he would stay and die in
[6:22] Speaker 3: that spot. Benaiah returned to Solomon and told him what
[6:27] Speaker 3: Joab said. Solomon commanded Benaiah, Joab murdered two commanders who
[6:34] Speaker 3: were more righteous than himself. God will repay Joab for
[6:38] Speaker 3: his crimes. And by killing Joab, the kingdom of David
[6:41] Speaker 3: will have peace. Benaiah, kill Joab. Benaiah obeyed Solomon and
[6:48] Speaker 3: returned to the same spot where Joab was still hiding.
[6:52] Speaker 3: Benaiah killed Joab and buried him. There was one person
[6:58] Speaker 3: left Solomon had to deal with. Solomon called for Shemi,
[7:03] Speaker 3: and Shemi came to Solomon. He said to Shemi, You
[7:07] Speaker 3: cursed my father. after he showed you mercy. Build yourself
[7:11] Speaker 3: a home in Jerusalem and never leave. If you leave Jerusalem,
[7:16] Speaker 3: you will be killed. Shemi agreed with Solomon and thought
[7:21] Speaker 3: his punishment was fair. After three years, Shemi broke the agreement.
[7:27] Speaker 3: Solomon told God he would repay Shemi for all the
[7:30] Speaker 3: evil he has done, and he ordered Benaiah to kill Shemi.
[7:35] Speaker 3: Benaiah obeyed Solomon. And he murdered Shimei. Solomon completed his
[7:41] Speaker 3: father's request and was firmly established as the king of Israel.
[7:52] Speaker 1: It's a new day in Israel. Solomon is now established
[7:56] Speaker 1: as king and David's life has come to an end.
[8:00] Speaker 1: What a life it was. Do you remember some things
[8:04] Speaker 1: we learned from David's life? Here are a few. We
[8:08] Speaker 1: learned that man cares about the outside and what we
[8:12] Speaker 1: look like, but God cares about our hearts.
[8:16] Speaker 2: And how we act.
[8:17] Speaker 1: We learned that even our biggest giants are nothing when
[8:22] Speaker 1: it comes to the strength we find in God. With him,
[8:26] Speaker 1: we can do anything. We learn that even when it
[8:30] Speaker 1: feels like everyone and everything is against us, we have
[8:34] Speaker 1: a hiding place in God.
[8:36] Speaker 3: He is our refuge.
[8:38] Speaker 1: And we learn that when we sin and mess up,
[8:42] Speaker 1: we need to confess it to God, and He can
[8:45] Speaker 1: make our hearts clean again. And so much more. I'm
[8:51] Speaker 1: thankful for the lessons of David's life, and I'm even
[8:54] Speaker 1: grateful for his mistakes. Do you know why? Because I
[8:58] Speaker 1: make mistakes too, every day. Seeing how David got back up,
[9:04] Speaker 1: made things right, and followed God again gives me hope
[9:10] Speaker 1: that I can do the same. And it reminds me
[9:14] Speaker 1: that God can use anyone to bring about his perfect plans.
[9:19] Speaker 1: It's never too late to be who you're supposed to be.
[9:24] Speaker 1: Even a little shepherd boy But didn't look very strong.
[9:29] Speaker 1: Even someone who sinned really badly.
[9:33] Speaker 3: Anyone.
[9:34] Speaker 1: Let's ask God today to give us a heart like David. Okay,
[9:40] Speaker 1: so today's story opened with David having a special talk
[9:44] Speaker 1: with his son Solomon. Solomon had an important job ahead
[9:48] Speaker 1: of him as king. And David knew a lot about that.
[9:54] Speaker 1: Right away we see the wisdom in Solomon. He wanted
[9:57] Speaker 1: to listen to his father's advice because he knew it
[10:01] Speaker 1: would help him be a better king. He didn't think
[10:05] Speaker 1: he knew it all. He didn't say, okay, dad, you're
[10:09] Speaker 1: just getting pretty old and I don't need you anymore,
[10:12] Speaker 1: your advice. No, he did not say that. He listened
[10:16] Speaker 1: and he followed. And when we read the book of Proverbs,
[10:20] Speaker 1: written mainly by Solomon, we hear this command repeatedly. Listen
[10:26] Speaker 1: to your father's advice. Remember what your mom said. If
[10:33] Speaker 1: you have parents or adults in your life that follow God,
[10:36] Speaker 1: listening to what they say can make you wise too.
[10:41] Speaker 1: People who are older and have lived a lot of
[10:43] Speaker 1: life know things that younger people haven't learned yet. So
[10:48] Speaker 1: listening to what they say brings you wisdom. It might
[10:52] Speaker 1: even save you from many mistakes. Whenever you learn to read,
[10:58] Speaker 1: you can also read the Bible. And the Bible is
[11:02] Speaker 1: God's letter to us. That also helps us know what
[11:06] Speaker 1: to do and how to have wisdom. In Proverbs 4,
[11:10] Speaker 1: Solomon says something very important. He says, And if you
[11:18] Speaker 1: have wisdom, you'll be safe. Knowing the right thing to
[11:23] Speaker 1: do and when to do it can protect us from
[11:27] Speaker 1: a lot of harm. But perhaps the best advice David
[11:31] Speaker 1: gave to Solomon was when he said, Obey everything God
[11:37] Speaker 1: tells you to do. He told Solomon that if he
[11:40] Speaker 1: would just listen to God, he would be a great
[11:43] Speaker 1: king and find success. And, as we'll see soon, he
[11:49] Speaker 1: was right. David told Solomon what to do about some
[11:54] Speaker 1: of the men who had not been faithful to God.
[11:58] Speaker 1: And not too long after that, David died after ruling
[12:02] Speaker 1: Israel for 40 years. Now, if you could ask David
[12:07] Speaker 1: one question when you get to heaven, what would you
[12:10] Speaker 1: ask him? I think I would ask exactly how small
[12:15] Speaker 1: was that pebble that killed Goliath. Thanks for listening. Next time,
[12:21] Speaker 1: we're going to talk about more wisdom. In fact, we're
[12:25] Speaker 1: going to learn from the pro, the wisest man who
[12:30] Speaker 1: ever lived. Any guesses who that may be? Remember, the
[12:35] Speaker 1: Bible is the best story ever told. It's God's story
[12:39] Speaker 1: to you. And it's all true. Enjoyed the podcast? Leave
