[1:13] Speaker 3: John the Baptist. In our last story, Jesus was accused
[1:18] Speaker 3: by the religious leaders for healing a man on the
[1:20] Speaker 3: Sabbath who had been sick for 38 years. In this story,
[1:26] Speaker 3: we will learn how John the Baptist's life is taken
[1:29] Speaker 3: from him for speaking the truth as inspired by the Gospels.
[1:38] Speaker 1: Hi, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress Sadler,
[1:42] Speaker 1: and I am so glad you're here today. Welcome back
[1:45] Speaker 1: for another story from the Kids Bible in Ear podcast.
[1:48] Speaker 1: King Herod is having a party. But it's not going
[1:52] Speaker 1: to be quite as fun as he expected. Today, sadly,
[1:57] Speaker 1: John the Baptist's life will come to an end. And
[2:00] Speaker 1: he will finish the job God gave him to do.
[2:03] Speaker 1: And finish it well. Let's listen.
[2:08] Speaker 3: King Herod's wife had John the Baptist arrested because she
[2:12] Speaker 3: was mad that John didn't like their marriage. John said
[2:16] Speaker 3: about Herod that it is a sin to marry your
[2:19] Speaker 3: brother's wife. But the king knew John was a good man,
[2:23] Speaker 3: and the people thought John was a prophet. And King
[2:26] Speaker 3: Herod secretly enjoyed listening to John. But Herod's wife wanted
[2:31] Speaker 3: him to kill John.
[2:33] Speaker 2: But he couldn't do that. He liked John.
[2:36] Speaker 3: Instead, he kept John in prison. One day, Herod had
[2:41] Speaker 3: a big party to celebrate his birthday. He invited a
[2:44] Speaker 3: lot of special people. His wife's daughter danced for everyone.
[2:49] Speaker 3: She performed so well that Herod wanted to give her
[2:52] Speaker 3: a gift. The people at the party were all listening,
[2:55] Speaker 3: and he wanted to show off in front of them.
[2:58] Speaker 3: So he said, Ask me for anything you want. I
[3:02] Speaker 3: will even give up to half of my whole kingdom,
[3:07] Speaker 3: and I promise you can have it. The daughter knew
[3:12] Speaker 3: she should think long and hard about this. She needed
[3:15] Speaker 3: help making her decision, so she went to her mother.
[3:19] Speaker 2: What should I ask for?
[3:21] Speaker 3: The girl's mother had an evil plan to get exactly
[3:25] Speaker 3: what she wanted. Herod's wife said to her daughter, You
[3:29] Speaker 3: should ask for John's head, because Herod's wife was determined
[3:34] Speaker 3: to have John killed. The girl knew just what to
[3:37] Speaker 3: ask for, and she returned to the party and said,
[3:41] Speaker 3: I want John the Baptist dead, and I want his
[3:45] Speaker 3: head to be delivered here on a silver platter. King
[3:49] Speaker 3: Herod wished he hadn't said anything at all.
[3:53] Speaker 2: But it was too late.
[3:55] Speaker 3: He had to keep his promise. The king had one
[3:58] Speaker 3: of his guards go to the prison and kill John
[4:00] Speaker 3: the Baptist and present the head to the king. John's disciples,
[4:06] Speaker 3: his followers, went to the prison and took his body.
[4:10] Speaker 3: They buried John and went looking for Jesus so they
[4:13] Speaker 3: could tell him what happened. Herod heard that Jesus was
[4:17] Speaker 3: performing miracles and could speak with God. Jesus was a
[4:21] Speaker 3: prophet too. King Herod felt really bad. He said, John
[4:27] Speaker 3: died because of me, but now he's alive again. Plus,
[4:32] Speaker 3: he can work miracles. Herod thought Jesus was John alive again.
[4:39] Speaker 3: He wanted to talk and meet with Jesus.
[4:48] Speaker 1: Today's story was tough to hear, wasn't it? Even though
[4:52] Speaker 1: none of this took Jesus by surprise, he must have
[4:56] Speaker 1: been so very sad to hear that his cousin John
[5:00] Speaker 1: was killed. Because sometimes, even when we know that God
[5:04] Speaker 1: is in control, we still want to cry when bad
[5:08] Speaker 1: things happen. Life can be hard, that's for sure. And
[5:13] Speaker 1: sometimes we just need to feel sad for a while.
[5:17] Speaker 1: Today we got to know King Herod's wife and I
[5:20] Speaker 1: guess you could say she was not a very nice person.
[5:24] Speaker 1: She was angry at John the Baptist and wanted him killed.
[5:29] Speaker 1: So as we heard, she came up with a pretty
[5:32] Speaker 1: evil plan when she had her own daughter asking Herod
[5:35] Speaker 1: to kill John. The Bible tells us that because King
[5:40] Speaker 1: Herod was trying to show off in front of a
[5:42] Speaker 1: lot of people and promised this girl anything she wanted...
[5:47] Speaker 1: He knew it had to be done, and he was
[5:50] Speaker 1: very upset about it. This is a great reminder for us.
[5:55] Speaker 1: Be careful what you promise. After the king's guard went
[5:58] Speaker 1: to prison and killed John the Baptist, John's friends came,
[6:03] Speaker 1: took his body, and buried it. This was their way
[6:07] Speaker 1: of showing him love, respect, and honor. I can't help
[6:12] Speaker 1: but think about how Jesus must have felt that day.
[6:16] Speaker 1: The Bible tells us that after he heard the news,
[6:20] Speaker 1: he got in a boat and went away by himself.
[6:23] Speaker 1: Have you ever felt so sad that you just wanted
[6:27] Speaker 1: to go to your room, shut the door, and be
[6:30] Speaker 1: all alone? Jesus probably wanted to talk to his father
[6:35] Speaker 1: and think through all that was happening. He loved his
[6:38] Speaker 1: cousin very much. Why did it have to end this way?
[6:43] Speaker 1: Jesus had a lot to think about. He knew that
[6:46] Speaker 1: his time was coming to suffer and to die. He
[6:50] Speaker 1: had one purpose, and it was almost time. When John
[6:55] Speaker 1: took his last breath, he was in the presence of God.
[6:59] Speaker 1: He was faithful to do the work he was given
[7:02] Speaker 1: to do. He obeyed God and played such a big
[7:05] Speaker 1: part in the ministry of Jesus. I can't wait to
[7:08] Speaker 1: meet him in heaven. I wonder if he'll still be
[7:12] Speaker 1: eating locusts. Just like John the Baptist, God has you
[7:17] Speaker 1: here for a purpose and a specific job. There's something
[7:21] Speaker 1: you can do like no one else can do. Do
[7:24] Speaker 1: you know how I know that? Because God created you
[7:28] Speaker 1: for it. Keep talking to Jesus and asking him what
[7:32] Speaker 1: he wants you to do. He will show you in
[7:35] Speaker 1: his perfect timing. And when he does, he will give
[7:39] Speaker 1: you the strength and ability to do it. And the
[7:42] Speaker 1: next time you're feeling sad or lonely, do what Jesus did.
[7:48] Speaker 1: Go away by yourself and just be with your Father.
[7:52] Speaker 1: Tell Him why you're sad and ask Him to comfort you.
[7:56] Speaker 1: Think about His love and rest in His peace. Well,
[8:01] Speaker 1: thanks for being here today. We're learning so much from
[8:04] Speaker 1: the Gospels and the life of Jesus. I hope you
