[1:15] Speaker 4: Solomon's God-Given Wisdom In our last story, David instructed Solomon
[1:22] Speaker 4: to keep the law of God and to also punish
[1:26] Speaker 4: Joab and Shimei. David died after ruling 40 years, and
[1:32] Speaker 4: Solomon had Joab, Shemi, and Adonijah executed. In this story,
[1:38] Speaker 4: God is pleased with Solomon, and God will give him
[1:42] Speaker 4: what he asked for, wisdom to rule his people. Inspired
[1:48] Speaker 4: by 1 Kings and 2 Chronicles.
[1:55] Speaker 1: Hi there, it's Joya Sattler. I'm thrilled you're back for
[1:58] Speaker 1: another story from the Kids Bible in.
[2:00] Speaker 2: A Year podcast.
[2:02] Speaker 1: Today, God let Solomon ask for absolutely anything he wants.
[2:09] Speaker 1: But instead, Solomon asks for one thing he most needs.
[2:14] Speaker 1: Can you guess what it is? Let's listen and see
[2:19] Speaker 1: how Solomon is doing in his important new role as king.
[2:28] Speaker 4: Solomon listened to his father David and followed his advice.
[2:33] Speaker 4: Solomon walked in God's commandments and Solomon loved God. God
[2:39] Speaker 4: was with Solomon and was making Solomon a great king.
[2:43] Speaker 4: One day, Solomon and an assembly of the people went
[2:47] Speaker 4: to a high place called Gibeon because there was a
[2:50] Speaker 4: bronze altar for God there. Solomon went up to the
[2:54] Speaker 4: bronze altar and and offered a total of 1,000 burnt offerings.
[2:59] Speaker 4: Later that night, God spoke to Solomon in a dream
[3:03] Speaker 4: while Solomon was sleeping. God said to Solomon, Ask for
[3:08] Speaker 4: whatever you want me to give you. Solomon answered, God,
[3:14] Speaker 4: you were good to David my father because of his
[3:17] Speaker 4: faithfulness and righteousness. You continue to be good to David
[3:21] Speaker 4: my father by allowing me, his son, to be the
[3:24] Speaker 4: king However, I feel like a little child because I
[3:29] Speaker 4: do not know how to be a king. I am
[3:32] Speaker 4: king over many people, too many to be counted. Please
[3:37] Speaker 4: give me wisdom, knowledge, and a discerning heart so that
[3:42] Speaker 4: I can govern your people and so that I may
[3:45] Speaker 4: know the difference between right and wrong. God knew Solomon's heart,
[3:50] Speaker 4: and God knew Solomon was honest. God was pleased with
[3:54] Speaker 4: Solomon's answer. and gave Solomon wisdom. He also told Solomon,
[4:00] Speaker 4: You will be the wisest person ever to live. You
[4:05] Speaker 4: also will be the richest person ever to live. And
[4:08] Speaker 4: as long as you continue to follow me, Solomon, you
[4:12] Speaker 4: will live.
[4:13] Speaker 3: A long life as king.
[4:17] Speaker 4: So God gifted Solomon wisdom and riches. Solomon had so
[4:22] Speaker 4: many riches that gold and silver were were as common
[4:25] Speaker 4: as regular rocks. When Solomon awoke from his dream, he
[4:29] Speaker 4: returned to Jerusalem to give more sacrifices to God. Afterward,
[4:35] Speaker 4: he threw a feast with the other government officials to celebrate.
[4:39] Speaker 4: One day, two prostitutes came to King Solomon to settle
[4:44] Speaker 4: a dispute. The first woman said, The other woman's son
[4:48] Speaker 4: died in the middle of the night, so she took
[4:50] Speaker 4: my baby while I was sleeping. and gave me her
[4:53] Speaker 4: dead son. She swapped out my living son for her
[4:57] Speaker 4: dead son and is trying to keep my son as
[4:59] Speaker 4: her own. But the other woman disagreed. The other woman said, No,
[5:05] Speaker 4: the living boy is my son. The dead boy is
[5:09] Speaker 4: your son. The first woman disagreed, and the other woman
[5:13] Speaker 4: would not admit the truth. King Solomon said, You both
[5:18] Speaker 4: say the living son is your own. but only one
[5:22] Speaker 4: of you is the true mother. Then King Solomon ordered
[5:26] Speaker 4: the women to bring him a sword, and they did.
[5:30] Speaker 4: King Solomon was testing the women to see who the
[5:33] Speaker 4: true mother was, and said, Cut the living child in
[5:38] Speaker 4: half and give each woman one part. The true mother
[5:41] Speaker 4: cried out to King Solomon, She can have him. Please
[5:45] Speaker 4: do not kill him. It is better she has him.
[5:49] Speaker 4: than for him to die. The other woman said, Neither
[5:53] Speaker 4: of us will have him. Cut him in half. King
[5:57] Speaker 4: Solomon realized the first woman was the true mother and
[6:01] Speaker 4: did not kill the baby. Instead, he told his servants
[6:05] Speaker 4: to give the baby to the first woman because she
[6:08] Speaker 4: was the true mother. All the people were amazed at
[6:12] Speaker 4: King Solomon's wisdom and realized the gift God gave King
[6:16] Speaker 4: Solomon to deliver justice. From that day on, people from
[6:21] Speaker 4: all over the world would come to listen to Solomon's wisdom.
[6:25] Speaker 4: Kings from other nations would send people to learn from Solomon.
[6:29] Speaker 4: King Solomon's knowledge and understanding was measureless. This also was
[6:35] Speaker 4: a time of peace for the kingdom of Israel.
[6:44] Speaker 1: Well, I guess you could say Solomon is getting an
[6:47] Speaker 1: A-plus as king. The last time we talked, David gave
[6:51] Speaker 1: his son Solomon some very good advice, and Solomon listened.
[6:56] Speaker 2: David told him that.
[6:58] Speaker 1: No matter what he did as king, to make sure
[7:01] Speaker 1: he loved and obeyed God above all else. And because
[7:06] Speaker 1: Solomon did that, God came close and walked with him,
[7:10] Speaker 1: just like he had walked with David. God made him
[7:13] Speaker 1: a great king. Then, as we heard, God came to
[7:18] Speaker 1: Solomon in a dream one night and promised to give
[7:22] Speaker 1: him anything he wanted.
[7:26] Speaker 4: Anything?
[7:27] Speaker 2: Solomon must have thought. Anything, God said.
[7:30] Speaker 1: If you're like me, you're probably picturing a genie right
[7:34] Speaker 1: now out of a bottle that grants some kind of wish.
[7:37] Speaker 1: But this was no genie, and it was no fairy tale.
[7:41] Speaker 1: It was Almighty God, and it was for real. What
[7:46] Speaker 1: would you say if God offered to give you anything
[7:50] Speaker 1: you asked for? An endless supply of cupcakes? Maybe a
[7:55] Speaker 1: roller coaster on the roof? Or a pet rhinoceros? That's
[7:59] Speaker 1: all pretty fun. But Solomon knew he had a big
[8:03] Speaker 1: job to do, and he needed something really, really important
[8:08] Speaker 1: in order to do it well. So instead of asking
[8:13] Speaker 1: for stuff, he asked for wisdom. Here are a few
[8:17] Speaker 1: things we can learn from Solomon's response to God.
[8:21] Speaker 2: First, he was honest with God. Solomon was struggling a
[8:26] Speaker 2: little bit, and he told God all about it.
[8:29] Speaker 1: He felt like his father David was so wise, faithful,
[8:32] Speaker 1: and righteous. He felt like David always knew the right
[8:36] Speaker 1: thing to do, and he wasn't so sure he could
[8:39] Speaker 1: do that himself. He even told God that he felt
[8:43] Speaker 1: like a child. He just didn't know how to be
[8:47] Speaker 1: a king. And just like Solomon, when we struggle with something,
[8:52] Speaker 1: we can tell God all about it. He always has
[8:56] Speaker 1: the answers, and he's always listening. Next, Solomon thought about
[9:02] Speaker 1: what was best for everyone.
[9:05] Speaker 2: Not just himself.
[9:07] Speaker 1: Solomon seemed to understand that That to be a good king,
[9:11] Speaker 1: to be a great king, he had to make good
[9:14] Speaker 1: decisions for his people. So he asked for wisdom, knowledge,
[9:19] Speaker 1: and understanding.
[9:21] Speaker 2: Do you think wisdom and knowledge are the same thing?
[9:25] Speaker 1: They're not.
[9:27] Speaker 2: Knowledge is having a lot of facts in your head.
[9:31] Speaker 1: For instance, if you get 100 on a math test,
[9:35] Speaker 1: you probably know a lot of numbers. But knowing things
[9:39] Speaker 1: in your head is different from understanding things in your heart.
[9:45] Speaker 1: Knowledge is knowing the answer and wisdom is knowing when
[9:51] Speaker 1: to share it. Wisdom is not just having the knowledge
[9:55] Speaker 1: in your head, it's knowing what to do about it
[9:59] Speaker 1: and how to make the right decision it's being led
[10:02] Speaker 1: by god in your heart to do what's right even
[10:07] Speaker 1: in a challenging situation solomon could have asked for anything
[10:12] Speaker 1: money an expensive chariot a huge fancy mansion but he
[10:17] Speaker 1: chose to ask for wisdom But what's the big deal
[10:21] Speaker 1: about wisdom?
[10:23] Speaker 2: As you grow, you will have more and more.
[10:26] Speaker 1: Choices in life. And your choices and decisions have much
[10:31] Speaker 1: to do with what happens to you. You can save
[10:35] Speaker 1: yourself from a lot of sadness when you act wisely
[10:39] Speaker 1: and make good choices with God's help. But more than that,
[10:44] Speaker 1: just because we make smart decisions doesn't does not mean
[10:48] Speaker 1: that everything will go great in life. Remember the problem
[10:52] Speaker 1: of sin? It's always messing things up. But when we
[10:56] Speaker 1: are wise, we will receive.
[10:59] Speaker 2: Blessings from God.
[11:02] Speaker 1: So because Solomon didn't ask for expensive things that would
[11:05] Speaker 1: only benefit him, God was happy with Solomon. Just as promised,
[11:11] Speaker 1: Solomon was given wisdom. Not only that, he would soon receive.
[11:17] Speaker 2: Wow.
[11:19] Speaker 1: Even though Solomon was the one who organized and built
[11:26] Speaker 1: the temple with lots of help, he knew that God
[11:30] Speaker 1: deserved all the glory. That's something we should never forget.
[11:34] Speaker 1: Sometimes in life, it's easy to want glory for yourself.
[11:39] Speaker 1: If you score the winning goal, receive loud applause for
[11:43] Speaker 1: your solo, or get a super great report card, it's
[11:47] Speaker 1: easy to think that it's all about you. But in
[11:51] Speaker 1: those times, remember King Solomon. He was the wisest and
[11:56] Speaker 1: richest king of all time. Yet, he stopped to tell
[12:02] Speaker 1: everyone that it was nothing he had done. It was
[12:06] Speaker 1: all because of God. As today's story ends, I just
[12:10] Speaker 1: love the picture of Solomon spreading his hands to heaven
[12:14] Speaker 1: at the altar and saying with great passion, There is
[12:19] Speaker 1: no one like you, God. Can you see it? And
[12:24] Speaker 1: after all that excitement, no wonder Israel wanted to have
[12:28] Speaker 1: a party for two whole weeks. They were so joyful
[12:32] Speaker 1: and grateful to God for keeping his promise. When we
[12:36] Speaker 1: focus on God and the fact that he is right
[12:40] Speaker 1: here with us, we find joy. Solomon then built his palace.
[12:46] Speaker 1: And God once again whispered a very important reminder to
[12:50] Speaker 1: the king. As long as you follow me, your kingdom
[12:55] Speaker 1: will stand. Thanks for listening today. Don't miss next time
[13:00] Speaker 1: to hear what happens when Solomon gets a little too popular.
[13:04] Speaker 2: And steps outside of God's big, giant umbrella. You'll see
[13:09] Speaker 2: what I mean.
[13:10] Speaker 1: And don't forget, the Bible is the best story ever told.
[13:15] Speaker 2: It's God's story to you, and it's all true.
