[1:21] Speaker 4: Warning from the rich man. In our last story, we
[1:26] Speaker 4: learned through Peter's tax questions that children are provided for,
[1:30] Speaker 4: and we must become like children to enter the kingdom
[1:34] Speaker 4: of God. In this story, Jesus tells a story about
[1:38] Speaker 4: a rich man and a poor man named Lazarus, who
[1:42] Speaker 4: both died and what happens to them. As inspired by
[1:48] Speaker 4: the Gospels.
[1:52] Speaker 1: Hey, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress Sadler,
[1:56] Speaker 1: back for another story from the Kids Bible in a
[1:58] Speaker 1: Year podcast. Today, we are hearing a story that may
[2:02] Speaker 1: sound a little strange, but if we stick with it,
[2:05] Speaker 1: there's a very good lesson in the end. Well, let's
[2:08] Speaker 1: dive in.
[2:11] Speaker 4: Jesus began to share a story. There was a man
[2:15] Speaker 4: who had everything he needed and everything that he wanted.
[2:19] Speaker 4: He lived in a big house. owned the best clothes,
[2:23] Speaker 4: and ate the most delicious food. He was a very
[2:27] Speaker 4: rich man and did not lack anything. Lazarus was a
[2:31] Speaker 4: very poor man and a sick man who lived outside
[2:36] Speaker 4: his house. He wished that he could eat the leftovers
[2:39] Speaker 4: that the rich man threw away. Lazarus was covered in
[2:44] Speaker 4: sores all over his body. Even the dogs would come
[2:48] Speaker 4: by and lick all his wounds. One day, Lazarus died,
[2:54] Speaker 4: and the angels took him to heaven with Abraham. Lazarus
[2:58] Speaker 4: stayed in heaven by Abraham's side. The rich man soon
[3:02] Speaker 4: died after and was buried in the ground. He ended
[3:07] Speaker 4: up in Hades and was very far from where Lazarus was.
[3:11] Speaker 4: It was a horrible place, and the rich man was
[3:14] Speaker 4: so sad to be there. He was in pain and
[3:18] Speaker 4: was being tortured from the fire. The rich man looked
[3:21] Speaker 4: up and he could see Abraham and Lazarus far away
[3:25] Speaker 4: from him. He begged and cried out to Abraham, Please,
[3:30] Speaker 4: let Lazarus dip his finger in water and cool my tongue.
[3:34] Speaker 4: It is so hot from this fire down here. I
[3:38] Speaker 4: am in so much pain, and I cannot take it anymore.
[3:42] Speaker 4: Abraham said to him, All your life you had everything
[3:47] Speaker 4: you wanted. There was never a need in your life.
[3:51] Speaker 4: and you never went without. You always had good things
[3:56] Speaker 4: and never had anything bad. Lazarus never had anything good.
[4:01] Speaker 4: He only had bad things. But now he is taken
[4:05] Speaker 4: care of, and you are now in pain and surrounded
[4:09] Speaker 4: by that fire. There is a very big gap between us,
[4:14] Speaker 4: and you can never reach anyone, and no one can
[4:18] Speaker 4: reach you. The rich man cried out, Please send Lazarus
[4:23] Speaker 4: to my family and warn my brothers. I do not
[4:26] Speaker 4: want them to end.
[4:27] Speaker 2: Up here with me.
[4:28] Speaker 4: This is a horrible place and I do not want
[4:31] Speaker 4: my brothers to be stuck here like I am. Abraham said,
[4:36] Speaker 4: They should listen to the prophets and to Moses. The
[4:40] Speaker 4: man replied, No, that will not work. They will listen
[4:45] Speaker 4: and repent if someone who is dead tells them. Abraham said,
[4:50] Speaker 4: If they do not listen to the prophets, they will
[4:54] Speaker 4: surely not listen to someone who is dead.
[5:02] Speaker 2: I know, I know.
[5:03] Speaker 1: This is not your usual bedtime story. As we open,
[5:07] Speaker 1: we find Jesus telling his friends a story. But it
[5:10] Speaker 1: wasn't a parable this time. Usually when Jesus told parables,
[5:14] Speaker 1: there were no names. And they were just stories he
[5:17] Speaker 1: would tell to help people understand something. But this story
[5:22] Speaker 1: was different. Many people believe that Jesus saw the story
[5:26] Speaker 1: take place. He tells of a rich man who had everything.
[5:31] Speaker 1: He didn't just have everything he needed to live. He
[5:35] Speaker 1: had everything he wanted too. He had all the coolest clothes,
[5:40] Speaker 1: the biggest house, and the yummiest food. He even had
[5:44] Speaker 1: servants who would bring it to him. If you can
[5:47] Speaker 1: have anything in the world you wanted... what would you
[5:50] Speaker 1: choose right now? Well, there was one thing that the
[5:54] Speaker 1: rich man did not have, and that's a friendship with God.
[5:59] Speaker 2: Because he loved all of his stuff.
[6:01] Speaker 1: So much and didn't think he needed anyone. He chose
[6:05] Speaker 1: not to love and follow God. He chose to find
[6:08] Speaker 1: joy and happiness in his things instead of in God's
[6:11] Speaker 1: love for him. He chose not to help someone else
[6:15] Speaker 1: who was very poor. Next, We heard about another man
[6:19] Speaker 1: whose name was Lazarus. His life on earth was very
[6:23] Speaker 1: different from this rich man. He didn't have much money.
[6:27] Speaker 1: He wasn't very healthy, and he didn't even have a house.
[6:32] Speaker 1: He was in a lot of physical pain and lived
[6:35] Speaker 1: on little scraps of food from the rich man. But
[6:38] Speaker 1: he did have one thing, God. He knew and believed
[6:43] Speaker 1: in God, and because of that, when he died, The
[6:46] Speaker 1: angels took him up to heaven. When he got there,
[6:49] Speaker 1: he stood next to Abraham. But when the rich man
[6:53] Speaker 1: died because he did not know God, he didn't get
[6:56] Speaker 1: to go to heaven like Lazarus.
[6:59] Speaker 2: He had to go.
[6:59] Speaker 1: Somewhere else that's far from God, where he would be
[7:03] Speaker 1: separated from him forever.
[7:06] Speaker 2: And it wasn't a good place to be.
[7:08] Speaker 1: In fact, Jesus tells us in this story that the
[7:11] Speaker 1: rich man was begging for some cold water because it
[7:15] Speaker 1: was so hot there. Abraham told him that this was
[7:18] Speaker 1: not possible because of the way he lived while he
[7:21] Speaker 1: was on earth. You see, even though the rich man
[7:25] Speaker 1: had everything he could ever want on earth, because he
[7:29] Speaker 1: chose not to follow God, he would have to spend.
[7:32] Speaker 2: Forever in a very bad place.
[7:35] Speaker 1: And on the contrary, because this man, Lazarus, did love
[7:39] Speaker 1: and follow God, even though he had nothing on earth,
[7:43] Speaker 1: he was given everything in heaven. Jesus told us the
[7:48] Speaker 1: story to teach us something about the way we live
[7:50] Speaker 1: here on earth. You see, the rich man did not
[7:53] Speaker 1: go to this bad place because he had money. There's
[7:56] Speaker 1: nothing wrong with being rich. But there is something wrong
[8:00] Speaker 1: with thinking that all of your money and things will
[8:03] Speaker 1: satisfy you. There's something wrong with thinking that you don't
[8:07] Speaker 1: need God. Jesus wants to know today that what we
[8:12] Speaker 1: do on earth will last forever.
[8:15] Speaker 2: Another time when he was teaching... He said that we
[8:18] Speaker 2: should be.
[8:18] Speaker 1: Storing up treasures in heaven while we're still here on earth.
[8:23] Speaker 1: Are you wondering what that means? It means we could
[8:27] Speaker 1: be doing things on earth that will last forever. Things
[8:30] Speaker 1: that will give us rewards when we get to heaven
[8:32] Speaker 1: one day. Things like helping someone who is in need,
[8:36] Speaker 1: encouraging someone who is sad, or obeying God even when
[8:41] Speaker 1: it's hard. Those are treasures that we will get once
[8:45] Speaker 1: we see Jesus.
[8:47] Speaker 2: And here's the thing.
[8:48] Speaker 1: There's nothing wrong with wanting new shoes, a nice house,
[8:52] Speaker 1: or a cool car. But if those things are the
[8:55] Speaker 1: reason we live, we will be just like that rich.
[8:58] Speaker 2: Man who didn't choose to follow God.
[9:02] Speaker 1: Can you think of something you can do today to
[9:05] Speaker 1: store up treasures in heaven?
[9:07] Speaker 2: Thanks for listening.
[9:08] Speaker 1: Next time, we're talking all about forgiveness and what a
[9:12] Speaker 1: math problem from Jesus has to do with it. I
