[1:28] Speaker 3: Woman at the Well In our last story, Jesus had

[1:39] Speaker 3: He sent His only Son that whoever believes in Him
[1:43] Speaker 3: will have eternal life. In this story, Jesus will talk
[1:48] Speaker 3: to a Samaritan woman in the middle of the day
[1:50] Speaker 3: and talk about a living water which will never make
[1:54] Speaker 3: you thirsty again. as inspired by the Gospels.
[2:01] Speaker 1: Hi there, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress
[2:05] Speaker 1: Sadler with the Kids Bible in a Year podcast. I
[2:08] Speaker 1: am so happy you're here today. Today we get to
[2:11] Speaker 1: hear an amazing story of how Jesus met a woman
[2:14] Speaker 1: who felt rejected by everyone, and he gave her a
[2:18] Speaker 1: very special message to show her that God loved her
[2:22] Speaker 1: and had not rejected her. What's going to happen? Let's
[2:26] Speaker 1: jump in and find out.
[2:29] Speaker 3: Jesus and his disciples were traveling through Samaria on his
[2:33] Speaker 3: way from Jerusalem to Galilee. Jews had a bad history
[2:37] Speaker 3: with Samaritans and often it was not appropriate for the
[2:41] Speaker 3: two groups to talk. Around noon, they arrived at a
[2:44] Speaker 3: Samaritan village. It was hot out and Jesus was hungry.
[2:49] Speaker 3: He asked his disciples to go into town for food
[2:52] Speaker 3: while he rested by the well. His disciples went out
[2:55] Speaker 3: to the town and left Jesus alone at the well.
[2:59] Speaker 3: Not long after the disciples left, a Samaritan woman came
[3:02] Speaker 3: to the well to draw water. She was hesitant at first.
[3:06] Speaker 3: She was not expecting anyone, especially not a Jew. But
[3:10] Speaker 3: she was thirsty and began drawing water from the well.
[3:14] Speaker 3: As she was drawing water, Jesus asked for a drink
[3:18] Speaker 3: from the well. She was even more surprised. This Jew
[3:21] Speaker 3: was actually talking to her. She shyly said, Jesus responded,
[3:26] Speaker 3: knowing what was going through her mind. If you had
[3:28] Speaker 3: any idea who it was you were talking to, you
[3:30] Speaker 3: would be asking me for water. Not just regular water,
[3:33] Speaker 3: but living water. Confused, the woman asked, What do you
[3:52] Speaker 3: mean living water? There is no such thing.
[3:56] Speaker 4: Is there?
[3:57] Speaker 3: How would you even get it? This well is deep
[4:00] Speaker 3: and you have no bucket to draw from it. Jesus
[4:04] Speaker 3: told her, Those who drink from this well, as you
[4:08] Speaker 3: often have found yourself thirsty, shall be again. Yet the
[4:12] Speaker 3: water I have to give springs up eternal life and
[4:16] Speaker 3: you would never be thirsty again.
[4:19] Speaker 2: Where do you.
[4:19] Speaker 3: Find this water?
[4:21] Speaker 2: Please give it to me.
[4:23] Speaker 3: Then I will never need to return to this well,
[4:26] Speaker 3: the woman exclaimed. Jesus told her to bring her husband back,
[4:30] Speaker 3: and he will tell her. She looks away in discomfort.
[4:34] Speaker 3: I do not have a husband. Jesus already knew that
[4:38] Speaker 3: and said, The man you are with is not your husband,
[4:43] Speaker 3: and you have had five husbands already. The woman was
[4:46] Speaker 3: confused as to how Jesus knew this. She assumed he
[4:50] Speaker 3: was a prophet or something of that nature to know that.
[4:53] Speaker 3: So she said uncomfortably, I can see you are a prophet.
[4:59] Speaker 3: Can you tell me the answer to the question we have?
[5:02] Speaker 3: Where is it that we should worship? Jews say at
[5:06] Speaker 3: the temple and we say here at the mountain. Who
[5:09] Speaker 3: is right in this situation? Jesus replied, Listen carefully, woman.
[5:15] Speaker 3: The time is upon us. Neither place is proper. But
[5:19] Speaker 3: neither place is not proper. God wants people to worship
[5:23] Speaker 3: him in spirit and truth. She jumped up in excitement.
[5:28] Speaker 3: I knew the Messiah was coming. He would come and
[5:31] Speaker 3: explain everything. Jesus smiled and told her, I am the
[5:36] Speaker 3: Messiah that you have been waiting for. She rushed off
[5:40] Speaker 3: in excitement, leaving her water jugs. She hurried past the
[5:44] Speaker 3: disciples who were just now returning with food. They were
[5:47] Speaker 3: confused as to what happened. They began to ask about
[5:51] Speaker 3: what happened. They were amazed that Jesus was talking to
[5:55] Speaker 3: the Samaritan woman, but everyone was too nervous to ask
[5:58] Speaker 3: about it. The woman was back in town telling everyone
[6:02] Speaker 3: to come and see the man that she met. He
[6:05] Speaker 3: knew every detail of her life without ever speaking before.
[6:10] Speaker 3: Surely he was the coming Christ. She invited them all
[6:14] Speaker 3: to come to the well. The disciples back with Jesus
[6:18] Speaker 3: were trying to convince him to eat, but he was
[6:20] Speaker 3: not hungry. He told them, I have food that you
[6:25] Speaker 3: do not know about. They were all confused, asking about
[6:29] Speaker 3: who brought Jesus food first, as they had always been
[6:32] Speaker 3: with each other. As they muttered amongst themselves, Jesus spoke
[6:36] Speaker 3: over them.
[6:37] Speaker 2: My food is to do the will of God.
[6:40] Speaker 3: They said to Jesus, You think we still have four
[6:44] Speaker 3: months until harvest? He then pointed to the crowd coming over.
[6:49] Speaker 3: Look here, the harvest is now. The crowd heard Jesus
[6:54] Speaker 3: and loved his message. They invited him to stay and
[6:57] Speaker 3: he remained there for two days. Many came to believe
[7:02] Speaker 3: Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
[7:09] Speaker 1: Living water? Food no one else knows about? Sometimes it
[7:14] Speaker 1: seems like Jesus talks in puzzles, doesn't it? But this
[7:18] Speaker 1: conversation was a very, very special one. Let's look at
[7:22] Speaker 1: it again to see why. Jesus and his disciples were
[7:26] Speaker 1: traveling from Jerusalem in the south of the bottom of
[7:30] Speaker 1: Israel up to Galilee in the north or the top
[7:33] Speaker 1: of Israel. To get there, they'd have to walk through
[7:36] Speaker 1: the middle part of Israel called Samaria. Now, Jews usually
[7:41] Speaker 1: avoided Samaria and everything about it. They didn't walk through it.
[7:46] Speaker 1: They didn't talk to the people. They didn't even want
[7:49] Speaker 1: anything to do with those old Samaritans. Now, why do
[7:54] Speaker 1: you think that was? Well, let's look back to what
[7:58] Speaker 1: we know about Samaria from other Bible stories. When Jeroboam
[8:02] Speaker 1: and Rehoboam split the nation of Israel into two kingdoms,
[8:07] Speaker 1: the one in the south was called Judah. And the
[8:09] Speaker 1: one in the north was called Samaria. The southern kingdom
[8:13] Speaker 1: had a few good kings, like Hezekiah and Josiah. But
[8:17] Speaker 1: in the north, there were no good kings at all.
[8:21] Speaker 1: Every single king, like King Ahab, was wicked. And because
[8:25] Speaker 1: the people of Samaria were so wicked, they worshipped worthless
[8:30] Speaker 1: idols and false gods like Baal and Asherah instead of
[8:34] Speaker 1: the Lord. God allowed the Assyrians to take them over.
[8:39] Speaker 1: Kind of like how he allowed the Babylonians to take
[8:42] Speaker 1: Judah over. But while King Nebuchadnezzar took the Jews from
[8:46] Speaker 1: Judah away to Babylon, King Sargon moved people from other
[8:50] Speaker 1: parts of Assyria into Samaria. Any Israelites who were left
[8:55] Speaker 1: married them. And their children and children's children and children's
[9:01] Speaker 1: children's children all the way down to the time of
[9:04] Speaker 1: Jesus were a mixture of God's people. and people from
[9:08] Speaker 1: other nations. So for hundreds and hundreds of years, the
[9:13] Speaker 1: Jews from Judah have looked down on the Samaritans. Instead
[9:17] Speaker 1: of seeing people that God still loved, they only saw
[9:21] Speaker 1: people who had messed up. Samaritans had made mistakes, and
[9:25] Speaker 1: the Jews wouldn't let them forget it. That's why they
[9:29] Speaker 1: didn't walk through Samaria, or talk to Samaritans, or have
[9:33] Speaker 1: anything to do with that place. To Jews, the whole
[9:38] Speaker 1: land was nothing but a bad memory. And to Samaritans,
[9:42] Speaker 1: rejection was all they could remember. It was easy to
[9:46] Speaker 1: feel like God wanted to forget them too. But Jesus
[9:51] Speaker 1: hadn't forgotten, and he didn't avoid them. Jesus led his
[9:55] Speaker 1: Jewish disciples straight into Samaria. There he had stopped by
[9:59] Speaker 1: Jacob's well, near where Jacob had lived with his family
[10:02] Speaker 1: before going down to Egypt. It's where Joseph was buried
[10:06] Speaker 1: and where Joshua had declared his house would serve the Lord.
[10:11] Speaker 1: That well had quenched the thirst of people in that
[10:14] Speaker 1: land long before David's kingdom, Solomon's kingdom, or the two
[10:18] Speaker 1: kingdoms of Judah and Samaria that caused so much trouble.
[10:22] Speaker 1: Jesus knew that the old kingdoms and the old way
[10:25] Speaker 1: of doing things had stopped giving his people life. They
[10:29] Speaker 1: needed a new way, a new kingdom, new water to
[10:33] Speaker 1: give them life. And that's why he offered the Samaritan
[10:37] Speaker 1: woman who stopped by the well that day. You see,
[10:40] Speaker 1: this woman not only felt rejected by Jews, but also
[10:44] Speaker 1: by all the other Samaritans she knew. She had made mistakes,
[10:49] Speaker 1: and no one would let her forget it. She probably
[10:52] Speaker 1: felt unlovable, unforgivable, and unacceptable. Jesus knew all these things,
[11:00] Speaker 1: and did you see what God did? People everywhere had
[11:04] Speaker 1: been asking Jesus if he was the Messiah, and he
[11:08] Speaker 1: hadn't answered any of them. But on this day, he
[11:12] Speaker 1: freely admitted that he was God's coming king. He offered
[11:16] Speaker 1: new water that would bring new life, a sign of
[11:19] Speaker 1: his new kingdom that would help people live a new
[11:21] Speaker 1: way so they would never thirst for worthless idols or
[11:26] Speaker 1: empty relationships again. And who did Jesus tell? Not important
[11:31] Speaker 1: Jewish leaders, not even his own followers. He told a
[11:36] Speaker 1: woman who felt rejected by everyone in a nation that
[11:39] Speaker 1: felt rejected by God.
[11:41] Speaker 4: In this one special.
[11:43] Speaker 1: Conversation, Jesus reminded them both They were not forgotten. To God,
[11:48] Speaker 1: people and nations who made mistakes were still lovable, forgivable,
[11:53] Speaker 1: and acceptable. I am so happy you joined me today.
