[0:11] Speaker 1: Every person who has lived except for Jesus has sinned.

[0:18] Speaker 1: us alone in our sin. You came to rescue us.

[0:57] Speaker 2: with code BLESSED. Paul's Letter to the Church in Rome,
[1:08] Speaker 2: Part 1 In our last story, we concluded Paul's second
[1:14] Speaker 2: letter to the Corinthians. In this story, we will begin
[1:18] Speaker 2: the first part of Paul's letter to the Romans. While
[1:22] Speaker 2: Paul had never been to Rome, he writes to the
[1:25] Speaker 2: church there and tells them that he hopes to come
[1:28] Speaker 2: visit them soon. He writes the letter to teach the
[1:31] Speaker 2: Roman believers about the basics of salvation, for they had
[1:35] Speaker 2: not been taught by an apostle. He also wanted to
[1:39] Speaker 2: explain the relationship between Jews and Gentiles, as inspired by Romans.
[1:49] Speaker 1: Well, hi, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress
[1:53] Speaker 1: Sadler with the Kids Bible in Ear podcast. I am
[1:56] Speaker 1: so glad you're here today. In this story, we get
[1:59] Speaker 1: to hear how God saves us from our sin and
[2:02] Speaker 1: makes us righteous, just like Jesus.
[2:05] Speaker 2: You ready? Let's listen. I, Paul, a servant of Jesus,
[2:12] Speaker 2: am called to be a messenger of the gospel. This
[2:15] Speaker 2: gospel was promised from the prophets about the Son of God.
[2:19] Speaker 2: Through he we receive grace and a calling to bring
[2:22] Speaker 2: faith to the nations. Grace and peace to you who
[2:26] Speaker 2: are in Rome. I am thankful for you all because
[2:29] Speaker 2: the whole world has heard of your faith. I always
[2:32] Speaker 2: pray for you and hope to come visit you one day.
[2:35] Speaker 2: I hope to strengthen your faith and be strengthened myself.
[2:39] Speaker 2: I am called to preach to all people, both wise
[2:43] Speaker 2: and foolish, Jewish and Greek. I am excited to preach
[2:47] Speaker 2: to you all in Rome. I am proud of the gospel,
[2:52] Speaker 2: for it is the power of God to save everyone
[2:55] Speaker 2: who believes. God's righteousness comes through faith. God's anger comes
[3:00] Speaker 2: from heaven against those who resist truth. They can clearly
[3:05] Speaker 2: see God, for creation shows him. They know God, but
[3:09] Speaker 2: they do not honor him. They were foolish and chose
[3:12] Speaker 2: to worship idols instead of God. God allowed them to
[3:16] Speaker 2: continue to sin, for they followed a lie instead of truth.
[3:20] Speaker 2: They worshipped the creation rather than the creator. God allowed
[3:26] Speaker 2: their sin to grow greater. They ignored God and became
[3:30] Speaker 2: filled with hate, evil, murder, and foolishness. They not only sin,
[3:34] Speaker 2: but tell other people it is good to sin. Remember,
[3:38] Speaker 2: you have no right to judge, for you are full
[3:42] Speaker 2: of sin. God's judgment falls on those who sin. It
[3:46] Speaker 2: is the kindness of God which leads you to repentance.
[3:50] Speaker 2: If you have a hard heart, the anger of God
[3:52] Speaker 2: will grow. Each of you will receive good or evil
[3:57] Speaker 2: based on how you live your lives. If you seek patience,
[4:00] Speaker 2: God will honor you. If you do not seek truth,
[4:03] Speaker 2: you will receive anger from God. It is not those
[4:07] Speaker 2: who hear truth who are good, but those who actually
[4:10] Speaker 2: do what is right. You must do what you know
[4:14] Speaker 2: is right. Some of you try to teach others about truth,
[4:18] Speaker 2: but you are far from it yourself. You bring a
[4:21] Speaker 2: bad name to God because you do honor him with
[4:24] Speaker 2: your mouth, but not with your actions. It is not
[4:28] Speaker 2: what is outside that is important, but your heart. You
[4:31] Speaker 2: must seek God's praise, not the praise of men. Why
[4:36] Speaker 2: is it good to be a Jew? The Jews were
[4:39] Speaker 2: first to be God's people. Some people say you should
[4:43] Speaker 2: sin so that God's truth can be made clear, but
[4:45] Speaker 2: that is wrong. Are Jews better than Greeks?
[4:49] Speaker 1: No.
[4:50] Speaker 2: No one is holy before God. On our own, no
[4:54] Speaker 2: one can be right before God. The law shows us
[4:57] Speaker 2: our sins. God's righteousness comes through faith. Everyone has sinned
[5:03] Speaker 2: and needs God's grace. Jesus took our sins away and
[5:07] Speaker 2: makes us right with God. Faith does not take away
[5:11] Speaker 2: the law but holds it up. Abraham was not made
[5:15] Speaker 2: right because of his good works. Instead, he was made
[5:19] Speaker 2: right because he believed in God. This faith is for
[5:23] Speaker 2: all people of all times. God promised Abraham that if
[5:28] Speaker 2: he had faith, he would make him into a great nation.
[5:32] Speaker 2: He stayed faithful to God and gave him glory. He
[5:35] Speaker 2: was made righteous. And so can those who believe in Jesus' resurrection.
[5:42] Speaker 2: Since we are now right before God, we can have
[5:45] Speaker 2: peace with God. We rejoice that one day we will
[5:48] Speaker 2: be in our full glory. If we stay with God
[5:51] Speaker 2: even in the hard times, we will not be ashamed.
[5:54] Speaker 2: The Holy Spirit brings God's love. When we were weak,
[5:58] Speaker 2: Christ died for us. Even in our sin, Jesus died
[6:02] Speaker 2: for us. Because we are right with God, he is
[6:05] Speaker 2: no longer angry with us. We were once against God,
[6:09] Speaker 2: but now we are with him. The people of Israel
[6:13] Speaker 2: committed sins during their whole history. We are in trouble
[6:18] Speaker 2: in our sin, but God's free gift of faith makes
[6:21] Speaker 2: us right with him. When sin is great, grace is
[6:24] Speaker 2: even greater. Sin rules in death, but grace rules in life.
[6:30] Speaker 2: Should we continue to sin so we receive greater grace?
[6:33] Speaker 2: Absolutely not. How can we live in sin if we
[6:37] Speaker 2: died in sin? We were baptized into the death of Christ,
[6:42] Speaker 2: but walk in his life. Death can no longer scare you,
[6:47] Speaker 2: for you are alive in God. Do not give room
[6:51] Speaker 2: for sin. Show yourself to God as clean. Since we
[6:55] Speaker 2: cannot rule over you, you are living in grace. You
[7:00] Speaker 2: either serve sin or righteousness. You no longer have to
[7:05] Speaker 2: serve sin because Jesus has set you free. Now you
[7:09] Speaker 2: can serve righteousness. Sin leads to death, but holiness leads
[7:14] Speaker 2: to life which never ends. This life which never ends
[7:18] Speaker 2: is a gift from God. You have died to the
[7:22] Speaker 2: law so you can live with God. We are no
[7:25] Speaker 2: longer bound as prisoners, but we serve the Spirit. Is
[7:29] Speaker 2: the law sin?
[7:30] Speaker 1: No. No.
[7:31] Speaker 2: The law showed us what is sin. When we heard
[7:35] Speaker 2: the law, sin came and tried to trap us, but
[7:37] Speaker 2: the law is still good. I want to do what
[7:41] Speaker 2: is good, but I find myself always doing what is wrong.
[7:45] Speaker 2: I love the law of God. How can I be
[7:48] Speaker 2: saved from this evil body? Only Jesus can save.
[8:00] Speaker 1: Wow. Today's story was filled with lots of words like righteous, sin, repentance, grace,
[8:07] Speaker 1: and faith. Those are all very Bible-y sounding words. But
[8:12] Speaker 1: do you know what they mean? More importantly, do you
[8:15] Speaker 1: know what they mean for you? Let's take a closer
[8:19] Speaker 1: look and find out. Paul is writing another letter to
[8:22] Speaker 1: another community of Jesus' followers. This letter is to a
[8:26] Speaker 1: church in Rome. Rome was the biggest, most important, most
[8:31] Speaker 1: powerful city in the whole wide world back then. And
[8:35] Speaker 1: the church there was made up of all kinds of
[8:37] Speaker 1: believers in Jesus. Some were Jewish and some were Gentile.
[8:41] Speaker 1: And they were all trying to figure out the best
[8:43] Speaker 1: way to follow Jesus. In fact, sometimes they argued about it.
[8:48] Speaker 1: Should they rest on the Sabbath and avoid certain foods
[8:51] Speaker 1: like Jews did? Or could they throw all the rules
[8:54] Speaker 1: out like the Gentiles did? Did the law of Moses
[8:57] Speaker 1: even count anymore? Paul writes to them to help them
[9:01] Speaker 1: stop arguing and all get on the same page about
[9:04] Speaker 1: what it means to be a Christian. In his letter,
[9:07] Speaker 1: he takes them back all the way to the beginning
[9:09] Speaker 1: and explains God's big, wonderful, surprising plan for people. Paul
[9:14] Speaker 1: starts by saying, the righteous shall live by faith, which
[9:17] Speaker 1: is a quote by the prophet Habakkuk. Righteous means perfect,
[9:21] Speaker 1: like God, always doing what is right. Even though God
[9:25] Speaker 1: made it obvious from the incredibly beautiful word he made
[9:29] Speaker 1: that we have a creator who loves us, people refused
[9:33] Speaker 1: to believe in him or obey him. They wanted to
[9:36] Speaker 1: worship worthless idols instead. And that's sin, choosing to ignore
[9:41] Speaker 1: God and do things your way instead of his way. Now,
[9:45] Speaker 1: how do you think he feels about that? Let's try
[9:48] Speaker 1: looking at it from God's perspective. Say you worked really
[9:52] Speaker 1: hard on a craft project for a friend. You spent
[9:55] Speaker 1: hours cutting and gluing and getting everything just perfect. but
[10:00] Speaker 1: when you gave it to your friends they just tore
[10:03] Speaker 1: it up maybe they threw your gift on the ground
[10:05] Speaker 1: and stomped on it maybe they said you were stupid
[10:09] Speaker 1: and walked away how would you feel angry sad hurt
[10:15] Speaker 1: yeah me too You see, God created a big, beautiful
[10:20] Speaker 1: world with everything we need to live and be happy.
[10:23] Speaker 1: He spent a lot of time getting everything just perfect.
[10:28] Speaker 1: And what did people do? We tore it up by
[10:30] Speaker 1: telling lies and being selfish. He stomped on it by
[10:34] Speaker 1: hurting one another. Lots of people called God stupid and
[10:38] Speaker 1: walked away. How do you think that makes God feel?
[10:42] Speaker 1: If he stopped being our friend, would we blame him?
[10:45] Speaker 1: But he doesn't stop because God never gives up. God
[10:49] Speaker 1: made a plan to rescue us from the lies, hurt,
[10:52] Speaker 1: and selfishness, the sin that destroys us. First, he gave
[10:57] Speaker 1: Moses laws to help people learn to be kind. Jews
[11:01] Speaker 1: who followed these laws would be righteous and God's good friend.
[11:05] Speaker 1: But no one could do it. The Jews tore up
[11:08] Speaker 1: God's gifts just like everyone else. Then God did something surprising.
[11:13] Speaker 1: He decided to show everybody how to be his good
[11:16] Speaker 1: friend by coming here himself as Jesus. You see, sin
[11:22] Speaker 1: and death are sticky. They stick to each other. But
[11:25] Speaker 1: Jesus is life. And because he never tore up or
[11:29] Speaker 1: stomped on anything God made, and he wasn't selfish or
[11:32] Speaker 1: rude or sinful, he was 100% righteous. So when he died,
[11:38] Speaker 1: death had nothing.
[11:39] Speaker 2: To stick to.
[11:40] Speaker 1: Jesus threw death right off and became alive again. And
[11:44] Speaker 1: now he made us another gift that's just perfect. Life
[11:49] Speaker 1: with him. And that's what grace is. Another chance to
[11:53] Speaker 1: be God's friend. We can keep tearing up that gift
[11:57] Speaker 1: or say we're sorry for our sin. That's called repentance.
[12:01] Speaker 1: And when we accept God's gift and live every day
[12:04] Speaker 1: as his friend, that's called faith. And when we live
[12:08] Speaker 1: by faith, death can't stick to us. We become righteous too,
[12:13] Speaker 1: just like Jesus. I am so happy you joined me today.
[12:18] Speaker 1: Come back next time to hear the rest of Paul's
