[1:11] Speaker 4: Paul's Second Letter to the Church in Corinth, Part 2 In.
[1:17] Speaker 2: Our last story... we began with the first part of
[1:20] Speaker 2: the second letter Paul wrote to the church in Corinth,
[1:24] Speaker 2: focusing on sharing in their suffering. In this story, the
[1:28] Speaker 2: letter will conclude, and Paul will encourage them to give
[1:32] Speaker 2: generously and continue to defend his apostleship, as inspired by
[1:38] Speaker 2: 2 Corinthians.
[1:42] Speaker 1: Hi again, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress Sadler,
[1:46] Speaker 1: with the Kids Bible in Ear podcast. I am so
[1:49] Speaker 1: excited you're here with me. Today we're gonna learn about
[1:53] Speaker 1: another special way we can show people God's love through generosity.
[1:58] Speaker 1: Let's dive right in.
[2:02] Speaker 4: Because of the promises of God, we must be pure
[2:06] Speaker 4: and holy, bringing honor to God. Please be open to
[2:10] Speaker 4: receive us. We have not hurt or made anyone evil.
[2:15] Speaker 4: You are in our hearts and we will live and
[2:18] Speaker 4: die together. I am proud of you. Even in our pain,
[2:22] Speaker 4: I have joy. When we have traveled to Macedonia, we
[2:26] Speaker 4: did not get rest. Instead, we faced problems everywhere we went.
[2:31] Speaker 4: God brought us comfort by bringing our friend Titus to us.
[2:35] Speaker 4: He told us of your love and prayers for us,
[2:38] Speaker 4: which made me rejoice. My last letter to you brought
[2:42] Speaker 4: you pain. But I do not regret sending the letter,
[2:45] Speaker 4: for it caused you to repent of your sin. It
[2:48] Speaker 4: is good if you feel guilt over your sin. Guilt
[2:51] Speaker 4: from God causes repentance, which brings salvation. Guilt from the
[2:56] Speaker 4: world is not healthy. This guilt from God caused you
[3:00] Speaker 4: to cleanse yourself and to fear the punishment of your sin.
[3:04] Speaker 4: You all have shown to be innocent. I wrote to
[3:09] Speaker 4: you so.
[3:09] Speaker 2: That your desire to serve God would.
[3:11] Speaker 4: Be known to God. I spoke good things about you
[3:15] Speaker 4: to Titus, and these things have been proven to be true.
[3:18] Speaker 4: He loves you all deeply, for you obeyed his leading
[3:22] Speaker 4: and honored him. I rejoice because I trust you all fully.
[3:27] Speaker 4: I want to tell you about how God has been
[3:29] Speaker 4: working in the churches in Macedonia. Even in pain, they
[3:33] Speaker 4: have shown joy. Even though they are poor, they have
[3:36] Speaker 4: been generous. They have given money to help us, even
[3:39] Speaker 4: though they do not have much money. Continue to grow
[3:43] Speaker 4: in faith, wisdom, and love, but also grow in generosity.
[3:48] Speaker 4: I do not force you to give, but that you
[3:51] Speaker 4: do so willingly. Jesus gave up everything so he could
[3:56] Speaker 4: serve you. You must continue to be generous and desire
[4:00] Speaker 4: to do so. You are blessed, so you must bless
[4:04] Speaker 4: those who have more needs. If you are generous, you
[4:08] Speaker 4: will lack nothing. I thank God for also putting you
[4:11] Speaker 4: on Titus' heart. He accepted the request to serve you
[4:15] Speaker 4: and did so with joy. We are also sending a
[4:18] Speaker 4: brother to you.
[4:19] Speaker 2: Who is a great preacher.
[4:21] Speaker 4: We hope that everything we do is pleasing to God
[4:24] Speaker 4: and man. I hope that Titus and my brothers would
[4:27] Speaker 4: be a blessing to you all. I boast about you
[4:30] Speaker 4: to the people of Macedonia. Your passion for God has
[4:33] Speaker 4: inspired them. I am sending brothers to you so they
[4:37] Speaker 4: may also see your strength. Whoever gives little will receive little.
[4:42] Speaker 4: Whoever gives much will receive much. You should decide how
[4:46] Speaker 4: much money you want to give, not out of pressure
[4:49] Speaker 4: or emotion. God loves those who give with joy. God
[4:53] Speaker 4: will make sure you have more than enough in everything.
[4:57] Speaker 4: God gives freely to the poor, and he is righteous.
[5:00] Speaker 4: He gives to the worker, and he will also give
[5:03] Speaker 4: to you. You will receive from God and be thankful
[5:07] Speaker 4: to him. You must not only give to the messengers
[5:10] Speaker 4: of God, but also give many thanks to God. Your
[5:13] Speaker 4: submission and generosity will lead to approval. Praise God for
[5:18] Speaker 4: his great gifts. I, Paul, am humble when I meet
[5:22] Speaker 4: with you and bold when I am away from you.
[5:25] Speaker 4: I pray that when I am with you, I do
[5:28] Speaker 4: not have to treat you as people who are living
[5:30] Speaker 4: in the flesh. For we are walking in the flesh.
[5:33] Speaker 4: We do not fight for God in the flesh. Our
[5:37] Speaker 4: weapons are not of the flesh, but of godly power.
[5:41] Speaker 4: We fight against thoughts which are against God and make
[5:44] Speaker 4: every thought serve Christ. We fight against everything which is
[5:48] Speaker 4: against God so that we may serve him completely. You
[5:52] Speaker 4: should be confident that you belong to Christ, and so
[5:56] Speaker 4: do we. I write to you with power even though
[5:59] Speaker 4: I seem weak when I am with you. However, I
[6:03] Speaker 4: do the things which I write to you, and I
[6:05] Speaker 4: will also do them when I am with you. We
[6:09] Speaker 4: were the first to come and share the gospel with you,
[6:12] Speaker 4: but we do not boast greatly in this. We hope
[6:15] Speaker 4: that as you grow and gain importance, we may be
[6:18] Speaker 4: able to build on that success.
[6:21] Speaker 2: We hope to preach the gospel in places far.
[6:24] Speaker 4: Beyond where you are. If you boast, only boast in
[6:27] Speaker 4: the Lord. The one who the Lord praises is praised.
[6:32] Speaker 4: I am protective of all of you, for I brought
[6:35] Speaker 4: you to Christ. I am afraid that the devil will
[6:39] Speaker 4: lead you away from pure commitment to Christ. Do not
[6:42] Speaker 4: put up with anyone who tells of a different Jesus
[6:45] Speaker 4: than the one I taught you of or a different
[6:47] Speaker 4: gospel message. These people are not wiser than me. I
[6:52] Speaker 4: am not the best preacher, but I have much knowledge.
[6:55] Speaker 4: I have made the truth simple. Should I have charged
[6:59] Speaker 4: you money for ministering to you? I took money from
[7:02] Speaker 4: other churches, so I did not have to take money
[7:04] Speaker 4: from you. When I was with you, I did not
[7:08] Speaker 4: even ask for money when I was in need. I
[7:11] Speaker 4: will not be a burden to you. I will not
[7:13] Speaker 4: silence my boasting, for God knows that I love him.
[7:17] Speaker 4: I will continue to speak against those who say that
[7:19] Speaker 4: their ministry is the same as mine. These people are
[7:22] Speaker 4: false messengers acting like messengers of Christ. Even Satan acts
[7:28] Speaker 4: like an angel. What they do they shall be held
[7:31] Speaker 4: accountable too. Do not think of me as a fool,
[7:34] Speaker 4: for I boast with confidence. If people boast in the flesh,
[7:37] Speaker 4: so will I. Whatever people boast about, I will also boast.
[7:42] Speaker 3: Are they Israelites?
[7:43] Speaker 4: So am I. Are they servants of Christ? I am
[7:46] Speaker 4: a better one. Many times I have been beaten, put
[7:49] Speaker 4: in prison, almost killed, shipwrecked, and gone hungry. I also
[7:54] Speaker 4: worry about all of the church.
[7:56] Speaker 2: Who is weak? I am not.
[7:59] Speaker 4: If I boast... I must boast in my weakness. God
[8:02] Speaker 4: knows this is the truth. I must continue to boast.
[8:07] Speaker 4: I know a man who is taken up into heaven,
[8:09] Speaker 4: but he cannot tell the things he heard. I boast
[8:13] Speaker 4: because of this man. Every time I get proud, a
[8:16] Speaker 4: messenger of Satan keeps me from getting proud by causing
[8:19] Speaker 4: me pain. I wish to get rid of this messenger,
[8:23] Speaker 4: but the Lord said, my power is made perfect in weakness.
[8:28] Speaker 4: I will boast all the more in my weakness so
[8:31] Speaker 4: the power of Christ can come upon me. I am
[8:34] Speaker 4: fine with my weaknesses, for then I am made strong.
[8:40] Speaker 4: I was greater than the other apostle, even though I
[8:43] Speaker 4: am nothing. I want to come to you for a
[8:46] Speaker 4: third time, and I will not be a burden. Children
[8:50] Speaker 4: do not support their parents, but parents support their children.
[8:54] Speaker 4: I will give anything for your souls. Did any of
[8:57] Speaker 4: us take advantage? Did we not all act in the
[9:00] Speaker 4: same way? Do you think we have only been defending ourselves?
[9:06] Speaker 4: In the sight of God, we do everything for your upbuilding.
[9:10] Speaker 4: I fear that when I come to you, I will
[9:12] Speaker 4: see you arguing, jealous and proud, and you will also
[9:16] Speaker 4: not find me as you would hope. I fear that
[9:20] Speaker 4: I will have to mourn over many of you who
[9:23] Speaker 4: have sinned and not repented. This is the third time
[9:27] Speaker 4: I come to you. God is powerful when dealing with you,
[9:30] Speaker 4: and he is great among you. He was crucified in weakness,
[9:35] Speaker 4: but lives now in power. We too are weak in Christ,
[9:39] Speaker 4: but we.
[9:40] Speaker 2: Live with the power of God.
[9:42] Speaker 4: Check your hearts to see if you are living in
[9:45] Speaker 4: the faith.
[9:46] Speaker 2: Test your faith.
[9:47] Speaker 4: We pray that you will not fail to test, but.
[9:51] Speaker 2: Will do the right thing. We must walk in truth.
[9:55] Speaker 2: We pray for you.
[9:57] Speaker 4: I write these things so that when I come, I
[9:59] Speaker 4: can build up and not tear down. Brothers, rejoice.
[10:04] Speaker 2: Be at peace with each other.
[10:06] Speaker 4: We greet you.
[10:07] Speaker 2: The grace of Jesus and the love of God be
[10:10] Speaker 2: with you.
[10:18] Speaker 1: In today's story, Paul finishes up his letter to his
[10:21] Speaker 1: friends in Corinth and talks about something that confuses a
[10:24] Speaker 1: lot of people, even today. Generosity. Now, Corinth was a
[10:30] Speaker 1: big city in Greece. It was an important city run
[10:33] Speaker 1: by the Romans. And so the Christians were mostly Gentiles,
[10:37] Speaker 1: not Jews. And they lived pretty comfortably. Miles away in Jerusalem, however,
[10:44] Speaker 1: Jewish Christians were struggling. The Jewish government and the Pharisees
[10:49] Speaker 1: were harassing them. And there had been a huge famine.
[10:53] Speaker 1: They were tired and scared and hungry. So the Corinthian
[10:57] Speaker 1: Christians had money and a comfortable life while the Jewish
[11:01] Speaker 1: Christians had neither. And because the Jewish Christians were in trouble,
[11:05] Speaker 1: Paul and the other leaders organized a plan for all
[11:08] Speaker 1: the churches everywhere to collect an offering and send it
[11:12] Speaker 1: to them. You see, one of Paul's other favorite word
[11:15] Speaker 1: pictures is family. Being a Christian is like being a
[11:19] Speaker 1: part of one big family, God's family. And that means
[11:24] Speaker 1: no matter where other Christians come from or where they live,
[11:28] Speaker 1: if you both love Jesus, you are family, brothers and sisters.
[11:33] Speaker 1: And just like in all good families, when you're part
[11:36] Speaker 1: of God's family.
[11:37] Speaker 2: You take care of each other.
[11:40] Speaker 1: The Corinth believers had everything the Jewish believers did not.
[11:43] Speaker 1: And in the beginning, they were happy to help take
[11:46] Speaker 1: care of them. But the Corinthians got busy and distracted
[11:51] Speaker 1: and focused on their own lives. And they stopped helping
[11:54] Speaker 1: the Jewish Christians out, even though they were still tired
[11:57] Speaker 1: and scared and hungry.
[11:59] Speaker 5: But God is faithful.
[12:01] Speaker 1: And though the church in Corinth had forgotten about the
[12:03] Speaker 1: believers in Jerusalem, he made sure others hadn't. Christians from
[12:08] Speaker 1: the church in Macedonia were extremely poor, got super excited
[12:12] Speaker 1: to share the tiny offering they had collected with their
[12:15] Speaker 1: brothers and sisters in Jerusalem, The Macedonian Christians felt like
[12:19] Speaker 1: getting to help other members of God's family was the
[12:23] Speaker 1: greatest thing ever. In fact, it was like a gift
[12:26] Speaker 1: for them. Being generous made them so happy. Did you
[12:31] Speaker 1: know that's how God made you? Generosity makes you happy
[12:36] Speaker 1: because God is generous. And when you give to help
[12:39] Speaker 1: someone else, you're acting just like your Heavenly Father. And
[12:44] Speaker 1: that makes him happy. And because Paul wanted his friends
[12:47] Speaker 1: in Corinth to be as happy as the church in
[12:49] Speaker 1: Macedonia and be like God, he encouraged them to remember
[12:54] Speaker 1: their brothers and sisters in Jerusalem and finish the work
[12:58] Speaker 1: they started. He told them God loves a cheerful giver.
[13:02] Speaker 1: A lot of people are grumpy givers. They don't want
[13:06] Speaker 1: to give away anything because they think all of the money, time,
[13:10] Speaker 1: and talent they have belongs to them. They think no
[13:14] Speaker 1: one can.
[13:15] Speaker 3: Decide what to do with what they have but them.
[13:18] Speaker 1: But God, who gives us rain and sun and food
[13:21] Speaker 1: to eat, air to breathe, and a beautiful world to
[13:24] Speaker 1: live in, is never a grumpy giver. Every little thing
[13:29] Speaker 1: we have is a gift from us from our generous God.
[13:33] Speaker 1: It's not really ours. God happily shares with us so
[13:37] Speaker 1: we can happily share with others. Like the Corinthians, sometimes
[13:41] Speaker 1: that means having a little less yourself so that others,
[13:44] Speaker 1: like the Jewish Christians in Jerusalem, can have everything they need. Today,
[13:49] Speaker 1: there are people everywhere, in your town, maybe at your
[13:53] Speaker 1: church or your school, and all around the world, who
[13:56] Speaker 1: have less than you do, and they need your help.
[14:00] Speaker 1: What can you share with them? How can you be
[14:02] Speaker 1: generous like your Heavenly Father? Look around and find out how.
[14:06] Speaker 2: You can be a cheerful giver today.
[14:09] Speaker 1: I am so happy you joined me. Come back next
[14:12] Speaker 1: time to hear what Paul said when he wrote to
[14:14] Speaker 1: his friends in Rome. Remember, the Bible is the best
