[1:21] Speaker 3: Paul's Shipwreck In our last story, Paul set sail as
[1:26] Speaker 3: a prisoner to Rome. A terrible storm struck lasting two weeks,
[1:30] Speaker 3: but no one was lost or hurt. But the ship
[1:33] Speaker 3: was destroyed and everyone swam to shore. In this story,
[1:37] Speaker 3: Paul discovers they ran aground on the island of Malta,
[1:40] Speaker 3: and Paul will get bitten by a snake, heal people
[1:43] Speaker 3: on the island, and eventually make his way to Rome,
[1:46] Speaker 3: where he will remain under house arrest. As inspired by Acts.
[1:55] Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Julia Sadler here. Thanks for joining me for
[1:59] Speaker 1: Kids Bible in a Year podcast. Once again, we're learning
[2:03] Speaker 1: some important lessons from the life of Paul today. He
[2:06] Speaker 1: continues to face hard, sad, scary things, and all the
[2:11] Speaker 1: while keeps preaching the good news of Jesus. I don't
[2:15] Speaker 1: think he's ever going to stop. Do you? Let's listen
[2:19] Speaker 1: in and see what happens on this island.
[2:24] Speaker 3: All the people were safe on land on an island
[2:27] Speaker 3: called Malta. It was rainy and cold and the people
[2:31] Speaker 3: there were kind and made a fire for everyone. Paul
[2:34] Speaker 3: thought quickly and ran into a forested area and grabbed
[2:38] Speaker 3: some wood while it was still dry to help.
[2:40] Speaker 2: While at the.
[2:41] Speaker 3: Fire, a snake hidden in the wood came out and
[2:44] Speaker 3: bit his hand. People looked at him and shouted horrible
[2:47] Speaker 3: things at him screaming that the gods were trying to
[2:50] Speaker 3: bring him to justice. After a moment, he shook the
[2:53] Speaker 3: snake off into the fire. While he collected himself, he
[2:57] Speaker 3: looked down at his hand, and to his amazement, it
[3:00] Speaker 3: had not swollen up like a bite should. The people
[3:03] Speaker 3: that were just shouting that the gods were punishing him
[3:06] Speaker 3: quickly turned around and said that he was a god.
[3:10] Speaker 3: Soon after, an official from the island came and introduced
[3:13] Speaker 3: himself and welcomed them. informing them that they had wrecked
[3:17] Speaker 3: on the island of Malta, but the governor was opening
[3:20] Speaker 3: up his home to help those that were wrecked. He
[3:23] Speaker 3: followed the official to the governor's house and introduced himself
[3:27] Speaker 3: and quickly found that the governor's father was sick and bedridden.
[3:31] Speaker 3: He then asked to be brought to him. As he
[3:34] Speaker 3: entered the room, he saw the man in bed with
[3:36] Speaker 3: a fever and dysentery. Paul walked to his bedside and
[3:40] Speaker 3: placed his hand on the man's head. Immediately, the man
[3:44] Speaker 3: was healed. Paul then gave thanks to God and returned
[3:48] Speaker 3: to his room. Soon after, people were arriving at the
[3:52] Speaker 3: estate asking for Paul to heal them as well. For
[3:56] Speaker 3: three months, Paul stayed in Malta, and it was not
[3:59] Speaker 3: until winter was over that Julius booked him passage to Rome.
[4:03] Speaker 3: Upon his arrival, Paul was greeted by Roman soldiers who
[4:06] Speaker 3: escorted him to a house where he was kept until
[4:09] Speaker 3: his trial before Caesar. Guards stayed with him day and night,
[4:13] Speaker 3: but he was allowed to have visitors. Often his friends
[4:17] Speaker 3: would stop by and talk to Paul to gain wisdom
[4:19] Speaker 3: from him. During this time, Paul spent a lot of
[4:23] Speaker 3: time writing. At one point, he wrote to all of
[4:26] Speaker 3: the Jewish leaders within the city of Rome, and he
[4:28] Speaker 3: invited them to come over and discuss the things of God.
[4:32] Speaker 3: Some of the Jewish leaders came to know Jesus through Paul,
[4:35] Speaker 3: but others did not. This brought great sadness to Paul,
[4:39] Speaker 3: and he said, The prophet was right when he said
[4:42] Speaker 3: that you would listen but would not hear. You would look.
[4:45] Speaker 3: but would not see. Your stubbornness has closed your ears
[4:49] Speaker 3: and covered your eyes. You can be sure of this.
[4:52] Speaker 3: The Gentiles will see and hear, and God will forgive
[4:57] Speaker 3: their sins. Paul remained in his home for two years.
[5:01] Speaker 3: Many people visited him, friends and strangers alike. Yet everyone
[5:06] Speaker 3: that came through was preached to about Christ. No one
[5:09] Speaker 3: ever tried to stop Paul from doing this. As the
[5:12] Speaker 3: end of the two years came upon him, Paul would
[5:16] Speaker 3: go to stand trial before Caesar.
[5:24] Speaker 1: I don't know about you, but when I hear today's story,
[5:27] Speaker 1: I just feel like standing up and cheering on Paul.
[5:31] Speaker 1: Keep going, Paul. Finish strong. You can do it. His
[5:35] Speaker 1: story is not over yet. As we heard, the prisoners
[5:39] Speaker 1: and crew from the ship are now safe on land,
[5:42] Speaker 1: an island called Malta. The people there welcome them and
[5:47] Speaker 1: build them a big, giant, warm fire. Paul and his
[5:51] Speaker 1: friends must have been so wet and cold by now.
[5:55] Speaker 1: As Paul is helping with the fire, the Bible tells
[5:58] Speaker 1: us that a snake jumped up and bit his hand.
[6:02] Speaker 1: I wonder if this was his biggest enemy, Satan, trying
[6:06] Speaker 1: to stop him from his mission once again and putting
[6:10] Speaker 1: more pain and annoying problems in his path. After all
[6:14] Speaker 1: Paul had been through, do you think this snake scared him?
[6:18] Speaker 1: Not one bit. The Bible says that he simply shook
[6:22] Speaker 1: it off and his hand did not swell up. It's
[6:25] Speaker 1: like he didn't even think about it. Well, that's not
[6:29] Speaker 1: exactly how I would have responded to a snake jumping
[6:32] Speaker 1: up and biting me. But remember, God had already promised
[6:36] Speaker 1: Paul that he would make it to Rome and stand
[6:39] Speaker 1: before Caesar. And when God tells you something, it's true.
[6:44] Speaker 1: and stays true until it happens. Paul knew that, and
[6:48] Speaker 1: we can know it too. Based on what happens next,
[6:51] Speaker 1: we can tell by now that Paul was really good
[6:54] Speaker 1: around people. He must have felt comfortable talking to others
[6:58] Speaker 1: and hearing their stories. Right away when Paul meets the
[7:02] Speaker 1: ruler of this island, he shares with Paul that his
[7:06] Speaker 1: father is sick. And after Paul heals him through the
[7:10] Speaker 1: power of the Holy Spirit, Many more come to see Paul.
[7:15] Speaker 1: Until finally, months later, he's taken to Rome. Do you
[7:19] Speaker 1: ever notice that no matter where Paul is, he is
[7:22] Speaker 1: working for Jesus? Sometimes I think if I were Paul,
[7:26] Speaker 1: I would see this deserted island as a nice long
[7:29] Speaker 1: break from all the drama. I'd get a good nap,
[7:33] Speaker 1: catch up with my friends, eat good food, and maybe
[7:37] Speaker 1: review my notes on what I wanted to say to Caesar.
[7:40] Speaker 1: But where do we find Paul? helping and ministering to
[7:44] Speaker 1: the people on the island, healing sick bodies and preaching
[7:48] Speaker 1: the gospel to anyone and everyone who would listen. That's
[7:53] Speaker 1: the kind of Jesus follower I want to be, always
[7:56] Speaker 1: doing the work of my father, no matter where he
[7:59] Speaker 1: puts me and for how long. Well, as we heard,
[8:05] Speaker 1: Paul is taken to a home where he will stay
[8:08] Speaker 1: until the trial. He can't leave there, but his friends
[8:12] Speaker 1: are allowed to visit. And the Bible says that they
[8:15] Speaker 1: came often. I don't know if they couldn't stay away
[8:19] Speaker 1: or if he just always wanted people around, but I'm
[8:23] Speaker 1: sure his friends strengthened him during those days. Although Paul
[8:28] Speaker 1: often stays positive and hopeful about things, today we got
[8:32] Speaker 1: a peek into some sadness in his heart. What was
[8:35] Speaker 1: making him sad? It wasn't that he missed home or
[8:39] Speaker 1: that he would probably have to die.
[8:41] Speaker 3: It was the.
[8:42] Speaker 1: Fact that so many Jews still did not believe. For
[8:46] Speaker 1: two years, Paul stayed in that house, preaching and trying
[8:50] Speaker 1: to convince these Jews to follow Jesus. Some did, but
[8:54] Speaker 1: many did not. It was now time for Paul to
[8:58] Speaker 1: stand before Caesar. But before he gets there, Paul has
[9:02] Speaker 1: a really important letter to write. Don't you wonder who
[9:06] Speaker 1: he's writing to? Come back next time and see. And
[9:11] Speaker 1: always remember, the Bible is the best story ever told.
[9:15] Speaker 1: It's God's story to you, and it's all true. Felt
