His deep sorrow for his people's disobedience leads to fervent prayers, but God remains resolute, illustrating His intentions through the analogy of the potter and the clay. [1:00] Speaker 2: our last story, we learned about the rule of Josiah,
[1:04] Speaker 2: how he had the temple restored and observed.
[1:09] Speaker 3: The Passover properly, but he died in battle against Egypt.
[1:28] Speaker 3: In this story, we will learn how Jeremiah was appointed
[1:32] Speaker 3: prophet during the reign of Josiah, as inspired by 2 Kings,
[1:37] Speaker 3: 2 Chronicles, and Jeremiah.
[1:45] Speaker 1: Hi again, it's Julia Sadler with the Kids Bible in
[1:48] Speaker 1: a Year podcast. I'm so excited you're here with me today.
[1:52] Speaker 1: We are going to hear how God used a clay
[1:55] Speaker 1: pot to teach his people who they... And everyone they
[2:00] Speaker 1: had really belonged to. It's such a cool story. Let's
[2:04] Speaker 1: dive in.
[2:08] Speaker 3: When King Josiah was ruling over the land of Israel,
[2:12] Speaker 3: God asked Jeremiah to be his messenger and tell the
[2:16] Speaker 3: people in the land what he wanted them to know.
[2:19] Speaker 3: God said to Jeremiah, I need you to go to
[2:23] Speaker 3: the people of Israel and say to them, you've all
[2:25] Speaker 3: been doing bad things. and are not following my commands.
[2:30] Speaker 3: I will send the armies of Babylon to take you away.
[2:33] Speaker 3: You will not be able to get away because I,
[2:36] Speaker 3: the Lord your God, am the one that is allowing
[2:39] Speaker 3: them to take you. Jeremiah became scared because of this
[2:44] Speaker 3: big thing that God was asking him to do. He
[2:47] Speaker 3: responded saying, God, I can't do this.
[2:52] Speaker 2: I am so young.
[2:53] Speaker 1: I am not good at speaking in front of a
[2:55] Speaker 1: lot of people.
[2:56] Speaker 3: Even though Jeremiah was so unsure of himself, God reassured him. Jeremiah,
[3:02] Speaker 3: I have chosen you. You can do this. I chose
[3:06] Speaker 3: you for this very important job long before you were
[3:09] Speaker 3: even born.
[3:10] Speaker 2: Don't be afraid, because I.
[3:12] Speaker 3: Will tell you exactly what to say. When you tell
[3:16] Speaker 3: them my words, they will become angry and ignore what
[3:20] Speaker 3: you have to say. Some will even try to kill you.
[3:24] Speaker 3: But I will be right by your side, and protect
[3:27] Speaker 3: you every day of your life. For many years after
[3:31] Speaker 3: that day, God continued to speak to Jeremiah, and he
[3:35] Speaker 3: continued to tell the people of the punishments that were
[3:38] Speaker 3: coming for their bad works. He constantly told them why
[3:42] Speaker 3: God was punishing them, but they never listened. He tried
[3:47] Speaker 3: getting them to stop doing bad, but they still never listened.
[3:53] Speaker 3: Jeremiah became very sad that they would not listen to
[3:56] Speaker 3: God and continued to do bad things. He got so
[4:00] Speaker 3: upset that he began praying and crying out for God
[4:02] Speaker 3: to forgive them. God responded to his prayers, saying, Jeremiah,
[4:08] Speaker 3: these people continue to do bad even though they have
[4:11] Speaker 3: been told of their punishment. I will not listen to
[4:15] Speaker 3: your cries because if Babylon does not take them, they
[4:18] Speaker 3: will never turn to me. It has been too long
[4:22] Speaker 3: that they have not looked to me, and I have
[4:24] Speaker 3: made my decision. To help Jeremiah understand why he is
[4:29] Speaker 3: punishing his people, God told him to go to the
[4:32] Speaker 3: potter's house. When Jeremiah got there, the potter was molding
[4:37] Speaker 3: a jar out of clay. The wheel was turning, and
[4:39] Speaker 3: the hands of the potter were shaping the clay gently. Suddenly,
[4:43] Speaker 3: the potter noticed that there was a crack in the
[4:45] Speaker 3: clay jar that he was making. If this crack were
[4:49] Speaker 3: not fixed... Then when the jar was finished, it could
[4:51] Speaker 3: not hold water and serve its purpose. So the potter
[4:55] Speaker 3: crushed the clay back into a ball and started over.
[5:00] Speaker 3: God said to Jeremiah, Did you see what the potter did?
[5:04] Speaker 3: This is exactly what I am doing for Israel. They
[5:09] Speaker 3: are like clay in my hands. It is necessary that
[5:13] Speaker 3: I crush them so I can reshape them and they
[5:16] Speaker 3: can fulfill their purpose. God then told Jeremiah to buy
[5:21] Speaker 3: a clay pot from the potter and take it to
[5:24] Speaker 3: the rulers of Israel. Jeremiah did as God instructed him
[5:28] Speaker 3: to do, and he stood in front of the leaders
[5:30] Speaker 3: of the city. God wanted to tell the people what
[5:35] Speaker 3: he had just told Jeremiah. You turned from God and
[5:39] Speaker 3: you worship other gods. You need to listen to what
[5:43] Speaker 3: he is trying to tell you. Jeremiah then threw the
[5:46] Speaker 3: pot on the ground and it shattered into pieces that
[5:49] Speaker 3: flew across the ground. Jeremiah then told them what God said.
[5:54] Speaker 3: God has said that he will destroy your city and
[5:57] Speaker 3: just like this clay pot, you will be shattered into pieces.
[6:01] Speaker 3: All of your people will be taken away and your
[6:04] Speaker 3: city will be in ruins. One of the priests became
[6:08] Speaker 3: angry with Jeremiah for saying these words because he thought
[6:11] Speaker 3: they were lies. He thought that Jeremiah was pretending to
[6:15] Speaker 3: speak the words of God. He hit Jeremiah and locked
[6:19] Speaker 3: him up for an entire day. Then when the priest
[6:22] Speaker 3: went to release Jeremiah, the next day he again spoke
[6:27] Speaker 3: words from God. Because of what you did, you will
[6:31] Speaker 3: now watch God's words come true. Before you die, you
[6:35] Speaker 3: will see the city be destroyed and will watch in
[6:38] Speaker 3: fear as your friends get taken. Then You will yourself
[6:44] Speaker 3: be taken, and you will die there. Israel went through
[6:48] Speaker 3: two more kings before that time came, but the priest
[6:53] Speaker 3: remained alive, as God said, until that day.
[7:01] Speaker 1: In today's story, we met a prophet named Jeremiah. And
[7:05] Speaker 1: just like God started working through King Josiah when he
[7:08] Speaker 1: was young, God also started working through Jeremiah when he
[7:12] Speaker 1: was young. You see, God loves using people of all shapes, sizes, ages,
[7:17] Speaker 1: and abilities to share his love with the world. You
[7:21] Speaker 1: could be a grade schooler or a grandma, a junior
[7:25] Speaker 1: high student, or a mom or dad, and work in
[7:28] Speaker 1: a factory, an office, a church, or a restaurant, on TV.
[7:34] Speaker 1: No matter who you are or where you are, you
[7:37] Speaker 1: are incredibly special to God. He made you. And when
[7:41] Speaker 1: you say yes to him, he'll use you right where
[7:46] Speaker 1: you are to do important work for him. That might
[7:49] Speaker 1: be sharing something God says in the Bible or encouraging
[7:54] Speaker 1: a person who feels sad or giving someone a snack
[7:58] Speaker 1: or a hug. Helping people understand that God loves them
[8:03] Speaker 1: and how to love God back is the greatest work
[8:06] Speaker 1: you and I can do. And there are so many
[8:10] Speaker 1: ways that we can do it. Whenever we become a
[8:13] Speaker 1: Christian and accept Christ as our Savior, then we get
[8:18] Speaker 1: the most important job of all. It's sharing Jesus with
[8:23] Speaker 1: other people, with our friends, with our family, with people
[8:27] Speaker 1: we're in class with or play sports with. We want
[8:30] Speaker 1: them to know how to go to heaven since we
[8:34] Speaker 1: know how. In fact, I don't think there's anything better
[8:38] Speaker 1: in the whole wide world than knowing you're working with
[8:41] Speaker 1: God to share his love and forgiveness and hope with everybody.
[8:46] Speaker 1: It might not be easy, but it's the best story ever.
[8:51] Speaker 1: That's what Jeremiah learned in our story today. He and
[8:56] Speaker 1: an artist who made pottery called a potter worked with
[9:00] Speaker 1: God to give an important message to the leaders of Judah.
[9:04] Speaker 1: Do you remember what happened? For years and years, God's
[9:08] Speaker 1: people had been disobeying him. They'd been worshiping worthless idols
[9:13] Speaker 1: instead of him. This made the people angry, selfish, and sad.
[9:18] Speaker 1: That's because loving anything more than you love God, it
[9:22] Speaker 1: always makes you angry, selfish, and sad. What made matters
[9:27] Speaker 1: worse is that God had made it clear to his
[9:30] Speaker 1: people if they obeyed him, goodness and blessing would follow.
[9:35] Speaker 1: They'd live happily ever after in the beautiful, wonderful land
[9:39] Speaker 1: he had given them. But if they disobeyed God, discipline
[9:43] Speaker 1: would follow. They'd have to leave their beautiful, wonderful land
[9:47] Speaker 1: and be put in a timeout far, far away. The
[9:52] Speaker 1: people had definitely been disobeying God, and it was Jeremiah's
[9:56] Speaker 1: job to tell them. Now, everyone in Judah had heard
[10:00] Speaker 1: God's words. And they knew what he said in their heads.
[10:04] Speaker 1: But not in their hearts. In their hearts, the people
[10:09] Speaker 1: who were angry, selfish, and sad loved the word, mine.
[10:14] Speaker 1: Whenever they looked at their houses and stuff, their hearts said, mine. Mine.
[10:19] Speaker 1: And whenever they looked at their jobs or their influence
[10:22] Speaker 1: over others, their heart said, mine. And whenever they looked
[10:27] Speaker 1: in the mirror and thought about their strengths and abilities,
[10:31] Speaker 1: their heart said, mine. But when God looked down at
[10:35] Speaker 1: his people that he had made and the land he
[10:39] Speaker 1: had given them and the food he'd made grow, And
[10:44] Speaker 1: the rain he caused to fall and the air he'd
[10:48] Speaker 1: given them to breathe. Mine, he said. And he was right.
[10:53] Speaker 1: That's why a clay pot was the perfect picture for
[10:57] Speaker 1: Jeremiah to use to help people understand. They didn't belong
[11:02] Speaker 1: to themselves. God made them to do important work. And
[11:06] Speaker 1: they were not doing it. The potter knew how to mold, shape,
[11:11] Speaker 1: and reshape. the clay to make a strong, sturdy pot.
[11:16] Speaker 1: The clay couldn't shape itself. It depended on the potter
[11:19] Speaker 1: to make it into something useful. In the same way,
[11:23] Speaker 1: God shapes all of us into something useful. He molds
[11:27] Speaker 1: everyone into different shapes, sizes, ages, and abilities so we
[11:32] Speaker 1: can share his love with the world. And when he
[11:35] Speaker 1: looks at you, his loving heart tenderly says, mine. That's
[11:42] Speaker 1: why there's nothing better in the whole world than taking
[11:45] Speaker 1: your stuff, strength, self, and everything in your life and
[11:49] Speaker 1: saying back to God, yours. Use it to do important
[11:54] Speaker 1: work for you. It might not always be easy, but
[11:58] Speaker 1: it is the best. I'm so happy you joined me today.
[12:01] Speaker 1: Come back next time to hear how Israel's king and
[12:04] Speaker 1: priests chose not to believe Jeremiah, but a terrible lie instead.
[12:10] Speaker 1: And what happened next? Remember, the Bible is the best
[12:14] Speaker 1: story ever told. It's God's story to you. And it's
[12:19] Speaker 1: all true. If this podcast brought you joy and seems
