[1:16] Speaker 3: Saul's Conversion In our last story, Philip was in Samaria
[1:21] Speaker 3: and was doing such great things. Peter and John came
[1:24] Speaker 3: to join for a short time before returning to Jerusalem.
[1:28] Speaker 3: Philip was also moved by the Spirit to meet the
[1:31] Speaker 3: Ethiopian eunuch and baptize him. In this story, Saul will
[1:36] Speaker 3: encounter the Lord on his way to kill more Christians
[1:39] Speaker 3: and be forever changed, as inspired by Acts.
[1:49] Speaker 1: Hi, friends. It's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress
[1:53] Speaker 1: Sadler here. Welcome back to the Kids Bible in Ear podcast.
[1:57] Speaker 1: A true miracle is taking place today, and you don't
[2:01] Speaker 1: want to miss it. Jesus is going to get Saul's attention,
[2:05] Speaker 1: and his life will never be the same. Listen and see.
[2:13] Speaker 3: Saul was upset with Christians and was on a quest
[2:17] Speaker 3: to kill them. He went to the high priest and
[2:20] Speaker 3: received permission to travel to Damascus and arrest any Christians there.
[2:25] Speaker 3: On his way there, a blinding light from heaven hit
[2:28] Speaker 3: Saul and knocked him to the ground. Saul then heard
[2:31] Speaker 3: a voice say, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?
[2:36] Speaker 3: Saul asked, Who are you? In which the voice responded,
[2:41] Speaker 3: I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. Now get up
[2:45] Speaker 3: and go into the city, and you will be told
[2:48] Speaker 3: The men with Saul were shocked as they heard the
[2:52] Speaker 3: voice but did not see anyone. When Saul stood up,
[2:55] Speaker 3: he could not see anything. He was blind. The men
[2:59] Speaker 3: with Saul led him into Damascus, and Saul was blind
[3:03] Speaker 3: for three days. At this time, God spoke to a
[3:07] Speaker 3: disciple named Ananias. God told him, In a vision, He
[3:18] Speaker 3: has seen you come and place your hands on him
[3:21] Speaker 3: to restore his sight. Ananias became frightened because he had
[3:25] Speaker 3: heard about Saul and all the things Saul did to Christians.
[3:29] Speaker 3: But Ananias trusted God and went to Saul. When Ananias
[3:34] Speaker 3: entered the house, he placed his hands on Saul and said, Saul, Jesus,
[3:40] Speaker 3: whom you heard on the road, sent me here to
[3:43] Speaker 3: heal you and fill you with the Holy Spirit. Immediately,
[3:48] Speaker 3: Scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see again.
[3:51] Speaker 3: Saul then got baptized and hung around the disciples for
[3:54] Speaker 3: a few days. Saul then started to preach to the
[3:58] Speaker 3: people that Jesus was Lord, and the people were shocked.
[4:02] Speaker 3: They had known who Saul was and that he used
[4:05] Speaker 3: to persecute Christians. Saul grew more and more powerful and
[4:09] Speaker 3: continued to baffle the Jews. After some time, the Jews
[4:13] Speaker 3: decided to try and kill Saul, but Saul learned of
[4:17] Speaker 3: their plan. The Jews locked down the city walls and
[4:20] Speaker 3: kept a close watch on him so that he could
[4:23] Speaker 3: not get away. Saul's followers tricked the Jews by hiding
[4:27] Speaker 3: him in a basket and lowering him down and opening
[4:30] Speaker 3: in the wall to help him escape. Saul traveled to
[4:34] Speaker 3: Jerusalem to join the disciples there, but was not accepted
[4:38] Speaker 3: at his arrival because they were scared of him. Barnabas
[4:41] Speaker 3: took him in and brought him to the apostles. Barnabas
[4:45] Speaker 3: told them all about Saul's conversion. and how he preached
[4:49] Speaker 3: in Damascus. Saul stayed with them and traveled around Jerusalem
[4:53] Speaker 3: preaching the name of Jesus. The Jews tried to kill
[4:56] Speaker 3: Saul in Jerusalem as well, so the believers took him
[5:00] Speaker 3: to another city and then sent him off to Caesarea
[5:04] Speaker 3: and Tarsus. The church enjoyed a time of peace and
[5:07] Speaker 3: prosperity where it grew in numbers daily.
[5:15] Speaker 1: All you can say to that is, wow, what a story.
[5:21] Speaker 1: God is full of all kinds of surprises. And today's
[5:24] Speaker 1: story is one of my favorite surprises ever. We opened
[5:29] Speaker 1: with Saul looking for people who believed in Jesus so
[5:32] Speaker 1: he could arrest them, persecute them, and ultimately destroy the church.
[5:37] Speaker 1: This was his mission. So here's Saul on his way
[5:41] Speaker 1: to Damascus to hunt down more followers of Christ. It's
[5:45] Speaker 1: around midday when the sun is the brightest and a
[5:48] Speaker 1: light shines in his eyes, brighter than the sun itself.
[5:54] Speaker 1: And as if the bright light that knocked him to
[5:56] Speaker 1: the ground and took away his sight wasn't enough, the
[5:59] Speaker 1: voice of Jesus himself booms. Saul, Saul, why do you
[6:04] Speaker 1: persecute me? Can't you just see the men there with
[6:08] Speaker 1: Saul frantically looking around trying to figure out where this
[6:12] Speaker 1: loud voice was coming from? It would be three long
[6:16] Speaker 1: days until Saul regained his sight and he wouldn't even
[6:20] Speaker 1: eat a bit of food that whole time. I imagine
[6:24] Speaker 1: he had a lot of thinking to do. I wonder
[6:27] Speaker 1: if the question repeated in his mind over and over.
[6:31] Speaker 1: Why are you persecuting me? It was the Christians who
[6:36] Speaker 1: Saul wanted to kill and destroy. But what he now
[6:40] Speaker 1: understood was that it was actually the God of the
[6:43] Speaker 1: universe he was fighting against. Yikes. Next, God tells Ananias,
[6:50] Speaker 1: a believer in Jesus from the city of Damascus, to
[6:53] Speaker 1: go to the house of Judas and ask for Saul.
[6:57] Speaker 1: He says that Saul has seen him in a vision
[7:00] Speaker 1: coming to him. Can't you just hear the panic in Ananias' voice?
[7:05] Speaker 1: Hold up, Lord. I know all about this Saul. Here's
[7:09] Speaker 1: the one that hunts down followers of Jesus and does
[7:12] Speaker 1: terrible things to them. Why in the world would you
[7:15] Speaker 1: send me to him? Although Oniasis felt afraid, he did
[7:21] Speaker 1: what we should do when we get scared. He obeyed
[7:25] Speaker 1: God anyway. He trusted in God to protect him and
[7:29] Speaker 1: knew God's plan is always the best plan. As Oniasis
[7:33] Speaker 1: placed his hands on Saul, his sight came back and
[7:36] Speaker 1: he was baptized. The Bible tells us that after that,
[7:40] Speaker 1: Saul spent a few days hanging around the followers of Jesus.
[7:45] Speaker 1: He must have had so many questions. And they must
[7:49] Speaker 1: have been in total shock. God's plan was unfolding and
[7:53] Speaker 1: it was nothing like they thought it would be. He
[7:56] Speaker 1: was using the least likely person to reach the world
[8:00] Speaker 1: with his love. Through Saul, the Gentiles, people who were
[8:04] Speaker 1: not Jews... would soon come to know the incredible love
[8:08] Speaker 1: of Jesus and understand that they too could be forgiven
[8:12] Speaker 1: and free. It's a great thing to remember. If you
[8:16] Speaker 1: ever feel like you've done something too bad to be
[8:18] Speaker 1: used by God, remember Saul. If you feel like there's
[8:23] Speaker 1: nothing special about you that God would want to use you,
[8:27] Speaker 1: remember Saul. Saul went from killing Christians to boldly preaching
[8:32] Speaker 1: about Jesus. And risking his own life for the sake
[8:35] Speaker 1: of telling others about God's love. God can use anyone.
[8:42] Speaker 1: And he does. Well, after that we heard how Saul
[8:46] Speaker 1: escaped Jews who saw him as a traitor and wanted
[8:49] Speaker 1: to kill him. He eventually ended up in Jerusalem with
[8:53] Speaker 1: the other disciples. But they weren't so sure about this either.
[8:59] Speaker 1: They knew better than anyone how much he hated believers
[9:03] Speaker 1: in Christ. Barnabas convinced them that Saul's story was real,
[9:07] Speaker 1: and Paul continued to preach about Jesus everywhere he went.
[9:12] Speaker 1: The church was growing, and there was no stopping it now.
[9:15] Speaker 1: God was building his kingdom, and the powers of hell
[9:18] Speaker 1: would not prevail against it. Thanks for listening to this
[9:22] Speaker 1: amazing story. One day we'll get to hear about it
[9:25] Speaker 1: from Paul himself. But in the meantime, let's thank Jesus
[9:30] Speaker 1: for his power to save anyone and his willingness to
[9:33] Speaker 1: use even us. Oh, and please come back next time.
[9:38] Speaker 1: Jesus is still working miracles. This time through Peter. And
[9:42] Speaker 1: we're going to meet two people who will be forever changed.
[9:46] Speaker 1: Here we go. The Bible is the best story ever told.
