[1:09] Speaker 3: Esther saves her people. In our last story, Haman had
[1:14] Speaker 3: issued a decree and approved by the king to kill
[1:18] Speaker 3: all the Jews. But Mordecai and Esther came up with
[1:22] Speaker 3: a plan to stop it. by holding a banquet for
[1:25] Speaker 3: the king and Haman. In this story, Esther will exploit
[1:31] Speaker 3: Haman's plot as inspired by Esther.
[1:39] Speaker 1: Well, hi, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress
[1:43] Speaker 1: Sadler with the Kids Bible in a Year podcast. I'm
[1:46] Speaker 1: so glad you're here today. In this story, we get
[1:49] Speaker 1: to hear the rest of Esther's story, what happened to
[1:52] Speaker 1: her people and how pride caused one final downfall. Let's
[1:58] Speaker 1: find out what happened.
[2:01] Speaker 3: When Queen Esther invited Haman and the king to a
[2:04] Speaker 3: second banquet, Haman was filled with pride. He walked around
[2:09] Speaker 3: in high spirits, boasting about his invitation. That all ended
[2:13] Speaker 3: when Esther's uncle Mordecai refused to bow down to him.
[2:17] Speaker 3: Haman was furious. He told his friends, I am honored
[2:22] Speaker 3: by the king. The queen loves me as well. I
[2:25] Speaker 3: am the only one she invited over for dinner, and
[2:28] Speaker 3: this was the second time. This makes me someone honorable
[2:32] Speaker 3: with many accomplishments. However, I will not be happy until
[2:36] Speaker 3: I see Mordecai dead. His friends told Haman, find a
[2:40] Speaker 3: way to kill Mordecai and ask the king to make
[2:43] Speaker 3: this order. Haman accepted this suggestion and found a pole
[2:47] Speaker 3: to kill Mordecai with. Later that night, the king had
[2:51] Speaker 3: trouble sleeping. so he asked someone to read the records
[2:54] Speaker 3: taken daily. It was read aloud that Mordecai had saved
[2:58] Speaker 3: the king from an assassination attempt. The king asked, What
[3:02] Speaker 3: did we do to honor this man for saving my life?
[3:06] Speaker 3: His attendant answered, Nothing was done for him. The king
[3:10] Speaker 3: summoned Haman, his top official, to fix that. He asked Haman,
[3:15] Speaker 3: How should I reward a man who is worthy of
[3:17] Speaker 3: all honor? Haman assumed the king was talking about him.
[3:21] Speaker 3: So he replied, Treat him like royalty. Give him a
[3:25] Speaker 3: crown for honor, your robe to wear and your horse
[3:28] Speaker 3: to ride. Then have him parade around town so that
[3:32] Speaker 3: he is praised by the people. The king said, Great idea.
[3:37] Speaker 3: Now I want you to do all of this for Mordecai.
[3:40] Speaker 3: Don't hold anything back to honor him. He is worthy
[3:44] Speaker 3: for saving my life. Haman was surprised and disappointed, but
[3:49] Speaker 3: he had to follow the king's command. When Mordecai was
[3:53] Speaker 3: praised and paraded around the kingdom, Haman was so humiliated.
[3:58] Speaker 3: He went home upset, but he didn't have much time
[4:01] Speaker 3: because his servants rushed him to get ready for the banquet.
[4:04] Speaker 3: The king and Haman arrived at Queen Esther's banquet. The
[4:08] Speaker 3: king was pleased with Esther and asked, What is it
[4:11] Speaker 3: that you want? I will give it to you even
[4:14] Speaker 3: if it means giving you half my kingdom. Esther said,
[4:17] Speaker 3: Your Majesty, if I have found favor in your eyes...
[4:21] Speaker 3: Please grant this one request. A man issued a decree
[4:25] Speaker 3: to destroy my people, the Jews. The lots were cast
[4:29] Speaker 3: and a date was set. I request you to spare
[4:33] Speaker 3: their lives. The king asked Esther, How dare this happen?
[4:37] Speaker 3: Who conspired such a plan? Esther pointed to Haman and said,
[4:42] Speaker 3: This man, who is our cruel enemy? The king was furious.
[4:47] Speaker 3: He left to the garden to think to himself. Haman
[4:51] Speaker 3: panicked and started begging Esther for mercy. He fell on
[4:55] Speaker 3: the seat where Esther sat. The king walked in on
[4:58] Speaker 3: Haman falling and shouted, Now you dare to harass my
[5:01] Speaker 3: wife in front of me? The guards took Haman, and
[5:05] Speaker 3: attendants told the king, Haman has a place set up
[5:08] Speaker 3: where he was planning to kill Mordecai. It was a
[5:11] Speaker 3: pole to impale him. Haman's death was executed. The king
[5:16] Speaker 3: gave Esther all of Haman's property. Mordecai entered the king's courts,
[5:20] Speaker 3: for Esther told the king that they were related. He
[5:24] Speaker 3: promoted Mordecai to the highest ranking official. He could now
[5:27] Speaker 3: speak up for the Jews' well-being. Esther boldly spoke up
[5:31] Speaker 3: for the Jews and saved her people. Because of that,
[5:36] Speaker 3: the king granted her request and reversed Haman's evil plans.
[5:45] Speaker 1: Have you ever heard the phrase, pride goes before the fall?
[5:49] Speaker 1: Did you know it actually comes from the Bible? In
[5:53] Speaker 1: the book of Proverbs, King Solomon wrote, pride goes before
[5:57] Speaker 1: destruction and an arrogant spirit before a fall. Well, you know,
[6:02] Speaker 1: King Solomon was the wisest person who ever lived. And
[6:06] Speaker 1: Haman is the perfect example of what makes his proverb
[6:10] Speaker 1: so true. Do you remember everything that prideful Haman did? First,
[6:15] Speaker 1: Haman thought his powerful position meant he could boss everyone around.
[6:20] Speaker 1: He believed he was more important than anyone else in
[6:24] Speaker 1: the kingdom, and everyone else should feel less important than him.
[6:29] Speaker 1: That's why when Mordecai refused to bow down to him,
[6:32] Speaker 1: Haman was furious. He was hopping, stomping, storming mad. That's
[6:40] Speaker 1: why when Mordecai refused to bow down to him, Haman
[6:44] Speaker 1: was furious. He was hopping, stomping, storming mad. But you know,
[6:51] Speaker 1: and I know, that Jews don't bow down to anyone
[6:55] Speaker 1: but the Lord. Then that prideful Haman decided to teach
[6:59] Speaker 1: Mordecai a lesson by hatching a sneaky, wicked plot. He
[7:04] Speaker 1: tricked the king and sent out a decree saying that
[7:07] Speaker 1: every Jew throughout all of Persia should be killed. But
[7:11] Speaker 1: you and I know that the Lord is more powerful
[7:14] Speaker 1: than any royal decree. Then, because Haman felt so proud
[7:19] Speaker 1: that Queen Esther invited no one but him to dinner
[7:22] Speaker 1: with the king, twice, he decided he'd get permission to
[7:26] Speaker 1: kill Mordecai himself. Silly Haman. He didn't know what you
[7:31] Speaker 1: and I know. that the only one worthy of bowing
[7:35] Speaker 1: down to would never let a king or king's official
[7:39] Speaker 1: lay a finger on his people without his permission. Other
[7:43] Speaker 1: officials in the king's courts had tried. Do you remember?
[7:48] Speaker 1: Wicked counselors had tattled on Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, so
[7:52] Speaker 1: Nebuchadnezzar would toss them in a fiery furnace. And jealous
[7:57] Speaker 1: wise men had tricked Darius into throwing Daniel in the
[8:00] Speaker 1: lion's den. But who was left standing at the end
[8:04] Speaker 1: of those stories? God's people who loved and trusted him,
[8:09] Speaker 1: not the ones who tried to stop them. Their pride
[8:12] Speaker 1: had gone before their fall. And this story is no different.
[8:17] Speaker 1: Because you and I know that God loves his people
[8:20] Speaker 1: very much. Do you remember everything that God did? First,
[8:26] Speaker 1: he humbled Haman. King Xerxes made Haman lead Mordecai, who
[8:31] Speaker 1: was sitting on the royal horse wearing a royal cloak,
[8:35] Speaker 1: all around the city. Haman even had to shout out
[8:38] Speaker 1: how great Mordecai was. Then, God used Esther's courage to
[8:43] Speaker 1: expose Haman's sneaky, wicked plot to kill the Jews. And
[8:48] Speaker 1: when King Xerxes found out, he was furious. He was hopping, storming,
[8:53] Speaker 1: stomping mad.
[8:55] Speaker 2: Then....
[8:57] Speaker 1: Because Haman had been so prideful and arrogant and selfish,
[9:01] Speaker 1: he allowed King Xerxes to give Haman the exact same
[9:05] Speaker 1: punishment Haman wanted to give Mordecai. And finally, because you
[9:10] Speaker 1: and I know that God loves his people very much,
[9:14] Speaker 1: God saved the lives of all the Jews in Persia.
[9:17] Speaker 1: Haman's sneaky, wicked plot was ruined. You see, someday you
[9:23] Speaker 1: might meet someone who is proud or selfish. or jealous,
[9:28] Speaker 1: someone who doesn't like God or God's people. And because
[9:32] Speaker 1: you love God, that person might try to make you
[9:36] Speaker 1: feel bad or say things about you. But you and
[9:40] Speaker 1: I know that pride goes before a fall. And you
[9:44] Speaker 1: know that following God sometimes means having courage like Esther
[9:48] Speaker 1: or Daniel or Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. And that's okay.
[9:54] Speaker 1: Because we also know that God loves us very much
[9:59] Speaker 1: and no one can lay a finger on his people
[10:01] Speaker 1: without his permission. And at the end of our story,
[10:06] Speaker 1: it's the ones who love and trust God who will
[10:09] Speaker 1: be left standing. I am so glad you joined me
[10:13] Speaker 1: for today's story. Come back next time to hear about
[10:16] Speaker 1: how God fixed a whole lot of problems in using
[10:19] Speaker 1: a man named Nehemiah. Remember, the Bible is the best
