[1:19] Speaker 4: Adonijah or Solomon, who will become king? In our last story,
[1:26] Speaker 4: David counted the people of Israel, and the Lord sent
[1:30] Speaker 4: a plague upon Israel. But David made offerings in a
[1:34] Speaker 4: field he bought, and the plague ended. In this story,
[1:38] Speaker 4: it will be decided who will be crowned king after David,
[1:44] Speaker 4: as inspired by first kings.
[1:49] Speaker 1: Hi, it's Julia Sadler here. I am so excited that
[1:53] Speaker 1: you're here for the Kids Bible in a Year podcast.
[1:56] Speaker 1: Today we're talking all about grace. And we'll learn a
[2:01] Speaker 1: lot from this story about Israel's brand new king.
[2:05] Speaker 2: Do you know who it is? Let's find out.
[2:12] Speaker 4: Now King David was very old and he couldn't stay warm.
[2:17] Speaker 4: His servants suggested that they find a young woman to
[2:20] Speaker 4: serve the king, take care of him, and keep his
[2:23] Speaker 4: body warm. They searched throughout Israel for a beautiful young
[2:28] Speaker 4: woman and found Abishag and brought her to the king.
[2:33] Speaker 4: She was very beautiful and she took care of King David. Adonijah,
[2:39] Speaker 4: one of King David's sons, decides that he should be
[2:42] Speaker 4: the next king. With his father being so old, he
[2:45] Speaker 4: thought it was the perfect time to steal the throne
[2:48] Speaker 4: from his brother Solomon. Adonijah started to gather supporters and
[2:53] Speaker 4: including Abathar the high priest and Joab the commander of
[2:57] Speaker 4: the military. But not everyone supported Adonijah. Zadok the priest,
[3:03] Speaker 4: Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, one of King David's mightiest warriors,
[3:09] Speaker 4: did not support Adonijah. Adonijah didn't let that stop him.
[3:14] Speaker 4: He went up to the stone of Zohaleth and sacrificed sheep, cattle,
[3:19] Speaker 4: and fattened calves, He invited all his brothers except Solomon
[3:25] Speaker 4: and all the royal prophets of Judah, but he did
[3:29] Speaker 4: not invite Nathan the prophet, Benaiah, or the special bodyguard
[3:34] Speaker 4: of his brother Solomon. Nathan went to Bathsheba, Solomon's mother,
[3:39] Speaker 4: and asked if she had heard what Adonijah was doing.
[3:43] Speaker 4: He told Bathsheba to go to King David and remind
[3:47] Speaker 4: him that he promised her that Solomon would be king.
[3:51] Speaker 4: So Bathsheba went to see the old king in his room,
[3:54] Speaker 4: where Abishag was taking care of him. What do you want?
[3:58] Speaker 4: said King David. Bathsheba replied, You promised me that Solomon
[4:04] Speaker 4: would become king after you. But now Adonijah has become king,
[4:08] Speaker 4: and you do not know about it. All of Israel
[4:12] Speaker 4: is watching you to see who will be the next king.
[4:16] Speaker 4: If you do not decide when you die, Solomon and
[4:20] Speaker 4: I will be treated like criminals. While Bathsheba was still
[4:24] Speaker 4: speaking with the king, Nathan the prophet showed up. He
[4:28] Speaker 4: went before the king and asked if he had declared
[4:31] Speaker 4: that Adonijah would be king. He told King David about
[4:35] Speaker 4: the sacrifices Adonijah had made and questioned if it was
[4:38] Speaker 4: something the king had done without telling his servants who
[4:42] Speaker 4: would be king. Bathsheba was invited back into the room
[4:46] Speaker 4: and King David said to her, I will keep my promise.
[4:50] Speaker 4: Solomon will be king after me, and he will sit.
[4:53] Speaker 2: On my throne.
[4:55] Speaker 4: Then Bathsheba bowed down with her face to the ground,
[4:58] Speaker 4: thanking him. King David commanded Nathan, Benaiah, and Zadok to
[5:04] Speaker 4: make sure Solomon became king. They put Solomon on King
[5:08] Speaker 4: David's mule, rode to Gihon, and anointed him with oil.
[5:13] Speaker 4: Then they blew a trumpet and shouted, Long live King Solomon!
[5:18] Speaker 4: Everyone joined in celebration, and the ground shook because of
[5:22] Speaker 4: the sound. Adonijah and all his guests heard the noise
[5:27] Speaker 4: as they were finishing their feast. Joab asked, What's going on?
[5:32] Speaker 4: Why is there so much noise? Then they found out
[5:36] Speaker 4: that King David had made Solomon king. When Adonijah's guests
[5:41] Speaker 4: heard this, they all became afraid and left. Adonijah, afraid
[5:46] Speaker 4: for his life because of Solomon, ran to the sanctuary
[5:50] Speaker 4: and grabbed the horns of the altar. Adonijah said, I
[5:55] Speaker 4: won't let go of these horns until King Solomon promises
[5:59] Speaker 4: that he won't kill me. Solomon agreed that if Adonijah
[6:03] Speaker 4: showed that he was worthy, not even a hair on
[6:07] Speaker 4: his head would be hurt. But if there was evil
[6:10] Speaker 4: in him, he would die. So King Solomon sent men
[6:15] Speaker 4: to bring Adonijah down from the altar, and he bowed
[6:19] Speaker 4: down to King Solomon.
[6:28] Speaker 1: Long live King Solomon! I think that was my favorite
[6:31] Speaker 1: part of today's story. Well, as you have heard, King
[6:35] Speaker 1: David is getting very old and having a hard time
[6:38] Speaker 1: staying warm. We hear in today's story how a special
[6:43] Speaker 1: nurse came to help care for David in his old age.
[6:48] Speaker 1: This was a normal practice in that day and not
[6:51] Speaker 1: at all unusual. But while David was trying to stay
[6:56] Speaker 1: comfortable and warm, his son Adonijah schemed to take his
[7:01] Speaker 1: throne away. Does this sound familiar?
[7:05] Speaker 2: Yes, we've been here before.
[7:08] Speaker 1: Chances are he heard that his brother Solomon was next
[7:11] Speaker 1: in line for the king because David had promised that
[7:15] Speaker 1: to Bathsheba. But Adonijah decided to take things into his
[7:20] Speaker 1: own hands and make himself king instead. And if we've
[7:25] Speaker 1: learned anything from our time together in the Bible, it's this.
[7:30] Speaker 1: Trying to do things our own way instead of God's
[7:34] Speaker 1: way never works out too well. So when the prophet
[7:40] Speaker 1: Nathan told Bathsheba what Adonijah was up to, she knew
[7:45] Speaker 1: she had to tell David.
[7:47] Speaker 2: And she did.
[7:48] Speaker 1: She reminded him of his promise to give Solomon the throne.
[7:53] Speaker 1: And thankfully, he agreed to keep his promise. So they
[7:57] Speaker 1: blew a loud trumpet and anointed Solomon as king. Long
[8:03] Speaker 1: live King Solomon.
[8:05] Speaker 2: I could say that all day.
[8:07] Speaker 1: But when Adonijah discovered what had happened, he and the
[8:11] Speaker 1: men with him got scared.
[8:13] Speaker 2: They were worried that.
[8:14] Speaker 1: Solomon might kill them since they tried to trick him
[8:19] Speaker 1: and take away the throne. And wouldn't it have been
[8:23] Speaker 1: easy for Solomon to do that? After all, he was
[8:27] Speaker 1: king now and could do whatever he wanted. If he
[8:31] Speaker 1: felt like ending Adonijah, no one would have stopped him.
[8:35] Speaker 2: But Do you.
[8:36] Speaker 1: Remember what he did instead? He gave him something called grace.
[8:43] Speaker 1: Grace is when someone gives you what you don't deserve.
[8:49] Speaker 1: It's almost like being caught disobeying or lying, and instead
[8:54] Speaker 1: of getting a punishment, you get an ice cream cone.
[8:57] Speaker 1: Once again, we see a picture in the Old Testament
[9:01] Speaker 1: of Jesus.
[9:02] Speaker 2: He's everywhere.
[9:04] Speaker 1: Can you think of how God showed grace to you
[9:07] Speaker 1: and to me? Because we were sinners separated from God,
[9:13] Speaker 1: He sent His only Son to take our punishment and
[9:16] Speaker 1: die on the.
[9:17] Speaker 2: Cross so we could live.
[9:19] Speaker 1: Jesus erased our punishment and instead gave us the free
[9:24] Speaker 1: gift of heaven. All we have to do is reach
[9:29] Speaker 1: out and take it. You can know that you have
[9:34] Speaker 1: that free gift. You can know that Jesus died on
[9:36] Speaker 1: the cross for you. But there has to be a
[9:39] Speaker 1: time in your life where you pray and you ask
[9:43] Speaker 1: God to come into your life, forgive you of your sins,
[9:47] Speaker 1: and be your.
[9:47] Speaker 2: Personal Lord and Savior.
[9:50] Speaker 1: And when we do that, the Bible says our heart,
[9:54] Speaker 1: our soul, we are forever secured in heaven. We will
[10:00] Speaker 1: absolutely go to heaven when we die and we never
[10:04] Speaker 1: have to worry.
[10:04] Speaker 2: About it again.
[10:05] Speaker 1: And that's much better than an ice cream cone. Let's
[10:11] Speaker 1: stop now and tell Jesus thank you for his grace.
[10:15] Speaker 1: He didn't just give it to us once.
[10:18] Speaker 4: No. No.
[10:19] Speaker 2: He gives it to us.
[10:20] Speaker 1: Over and over and over again. It's a never-ending gift.
[10:26] Speaker 1: And because of that, he wants us to give grace
[10:29] Speaker 1: to each other. Can you think of someone you can
[10:32] Speaker 1: show grace to today? Someone that maybe doesn't deserve it?
[10:37] Speaker 1: God can help you. Well, it seems King Solomon is
[10:42] Speaker 1: off to a great start already. He did something in
[10:45] Speaker 1: today's story that was hard, but it was right. And
[10:49] Speaker 1: that's going to serve him well as king. Remember, the
[10:53] Speaker 1: Bible is not a book of opinions. It's the only
[10:57] Speaker 1: way life works out.
[11:00] Speaker 2: Thanks for listening.
