[1:08] Speaker 3: Jesus walks on water. In our last story, we learned
[1:13] Speaker 3: about the execution of John the Baptist. In this story,
[1:18] Speaker 3: we will learn about Jesus feeding 5,000 people and walking
[1:23] Speaker 3: on water, as inspired by the Gospels.
[1:29] Speaker 1: This is Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress Sadler,
[1:34] Speaker 1: welcoming you back to the Kids Bible in a Year podcast.
[1:37] Speaker 1: Thanks for joining me. Well, today we're going to find
[1:40] Speaker 1: Jesus serving lunch to thousands of people and taking a
[1:44] Speaker 1: walk out in the middle of the sea. No big deal.
[1:49] Speaker 1: Even if you heard these stories before, listen close to
[1:53] Speaker 1: see if there's something special God wants you to learn today.
[1:56] Speaker 1: Here it is.
[2:00] Speaker 3: A crowd of people, including Jesus' disciples, followed Jesus to
[2:05] Speaker 3: a mountain where he taught. While the people listened to
[2:08] Speaker 3: Jesus teach, they were very hungry. They didn't have any food.
[2:14] Speaker 3: That wasn't a problem for Jesus. Jesus asked Philip, Where
[2:19] Speaker 3: can we buy bread for all these people to eat? Now,
[2:23] Speaker 3: Jesus asked Philip this question to test him as he
[2:27] Speaker 3: already knew what he planned to do. God, we could
[2:31] Speaker 3: never have enough money to buy food for this many people.
[2:35] Speaker 2: He then told Philip, Go get food for the people.
[2:40] Speaker 3: Again, the disciples said, We don't have enough money or
[2:44] Speaker 3: enough food. Jesus said, Why don't you go check? Andrew
[2:50] Speaker 3: found a little boy who hadn't eaten his lunch yet.
[2:54] Speaker 3: This boy has five loaves of bread and two small fish.
[2:58] Speaker 3: But how can that be enough food for so many people?
[3:01] Speaker 3: Jesus said, Give me the fish and bread. Jesus blessed
[3:06] Speaker 3: the small amount of food. Jesus said, Give this food
[3:11] Speaker 3: to the people. Tell them to eat until they are full.
[3:16] Speaker 3: The disciples did as they were told. The crowd was
[3:19] Speaker 3: more than 5,000 people. Jesus said, Now go pick up
[3:25] Speaker 3: the leftovers. There were 12 baskets of bread and fish
[3:30] Speaker 3: left over. Everyone was amazed. This man is like Moses
[3:36] Speaker 3: who did miracles because of God. The people wanted to
[3:39] Speaker 3: make Jesus king. Jesus heard the people and decided to
[3:44] Speaker 3: send his disciples away in a boat. He went up
[3:47] Speaker 3: to the mountain to pray alone. As Jesus was praying,
[3:51] Speaker 3: a big storm came over the disciples' boat. Rough waters
[3:55] Speaker 3: pushed the boat around. The disciples tried to get back
[3:58] Speaker 3: to shore, but the wind pushed against them. When it
[4:01] Speaker 3: was still dark, Jesus appeared on the sea, walking on water.
[4:07] Speaker 3: The disciples didn't know it was Jesus. They believed he
[4:11] Speaker 3: was a ghost. Jesus said, It's me. Don't be scared.
[4:16] Speaker 3: Peter said, Jesus, if it's you, then ask me to come.
[4:24] Speaker 3: Peter stepped out of the boat and walked on water. Suddenly,
[4:30] Speaker 3: he realized what he was doing.
[4:32] Speaker 1: He was walking on the sea in the middle of
[4:34] Speaker 1: a great storm.
[4:36] Speaker 2: He started sinking.
[4:38] Speaker 1: Jesus, save me!
[4:41] Speaker 3: Jesus grabbed him.
[4:42] Speaker 2: Peter, why didn't you believe?
[4:46] Speaker 3: They walked back to the boat, and just like that,
[4:50] Speaker 3: the storm went away. The disciples bowed down Okay, so
[4:55] Speaker 3: if any of these disciples still weren't sure who Jesus was,
[4:59] Speaker 3: and if all of this was for.
[5:02] Speaker 2: Real, I guess they now know.
[5:10] Speaker 1: As today's story opens, we find a crowd of people.
[5:25] Speaker 1: Thousands and thousands following Jesus, hungry for more of his teaching.
[5:30] Speaker 1: But that's not all they were hungry for. They had
[5:33] Speaker 1: been out there in the grass listening to him talk
[5:36] Speaker 1: for a while. And it was way past lunch. When
[5:40] Speaker 1: Jesus told the disciples to find food, Philip said that
[5:44] Speaker 1: even if someone worked every day for half a year,
[5:46] Speaker 1: it would only be enough money for every person to
[5:50] Speaker 1: get one little bite of bread. It was just impossible
[5:54] Speaker 1: to feed them all. But is anything impossible when Jesus
[5:58] Speaker 1: is around? Andrew, Peter's brother, noticed a little boy with
[6:03] Speaker 1: five loaves of bread and two small fish. And he
[6:06] Speaker 1: had enough faith in Jesus to speak up. As we heard,
[6:10] Speaker 1: Jesus multiplied the food. That means he took what he
[6:14] Speaker 1: had and made it into a lot more. Fed more
[6:17] Speaker 1: than 5,000 people until they were full. and even had
[6:22] Speaker 1: 12 baskets of leftovers. Then Jesus did what we see
[6:27] Speaker 1: him doing so often. He went away by himself to pray.
[6:33] Speaker 1: This was so important to Jesus. He was always making
[6:36] Speaker 1: time to just get away and be with his father.
[6:39] Speaker 1: This is when he would hear God speak to him
[6:42] Speaker 1: and get the strength he needed to continue helping, healing,
[6:46] Speaker 1: and guiding all those people who seemed so lost. And
[6:50] Speaker 1: think about this. If Jesus needed to get away by
[6:54] Speaker 1: himself for time alone with God, don't we need to
[6:57] Speaker 1: do that too? Do you have a time and a
[7:01] Speaker 1: place where you talk to God or read your Bible?
[7:06] Speaker 1: For as long as you live, this is the best
[7:08] Speaker 1: habit you will ever make. It's then that God can
[7:11] Speaker 1: speak to your heart and help you know what to
[7:14] Speaker 1: do in this life. Jesus sent his disciples to the
[7:18] Speaker 1: other side of the sea on a boat. And as
[7:21] Speaker 1: we heard, a storm came out of nowhere. As the
[7:25] Speaker 1: disciples strained to get back to shore, they saw what
[7:28] Speaker 1: they thought was a ghost walking on the water. I
[7:33] Speaker 1: love how Jesus knew exactly how they were feeling and
[7:37] Speaker 1: told them not to be afraid. Do you want to
[7:40] Speaker 1: know something really cool? The phrase, do not be afraid,
[7:45] Speaker 1: is in the Bible 365 times. That's one time for
[7:50] Speaker 1: every day of the year. God really wants us to
[7:53] Speaker 1: know that we can trust him and rest in him
[7:56] Speaker 1: even when scary things are happening all around us. But
[8:01] Speaker 1: once Peter recognized that it was Jesus and Jesus told
[8:05] Speaker 1: him to come, the Bible says that he jumped right into,
[8:09] Speaker 1: or onto, I should say, the water. The next part
[8:13] Speaker 1: of the story is so important. Did you notice when
[8:17] Speaker 1: Peter started sinking? The Bible tells us that it was
[8:21] Speaker 1: when he started looking at the waves. In other words,
[8:25] Speaker 1: when he took his eyes off Jesus. Isn't that just
[8:29] Speaker 1: like us? When we are going through hard times on earth,
[8:34] Speaker 1: it's easy to look at the storm or whatever it
[8:37] Speaker 1: is making us sad, scared, or angry. We think about it,
[8:42] Speaker 1: worry about it, talk about it, and focus on it.
[8:45] Speaker 1: But what if we could keep our eyes and our
[8:48] Speaker 1: hearts focused on Jesus and how he always takes care
[8:52] Speaker 1: of us? We would not feel so scared like Peter.
[8:56] Speaker 1: Today's story ends with a beautiful picture of the friends
[9:00] Speaker 1: of Jesus kneeling down and worshiping him. Once again, they
[9:05] Speaker 1: couldn't believe their eyes. God had visited them. They knew
[9:10] Speaker 1: who he was and very soon they would understand why
[9:13] Speaker 1: he came. Thanks for being here today and listening. Jesus
[9:18] Speaker 1: is teaching us all about bread next time, but a
[9:21] Speaker 1: different kind of bread, a better kind of bread. Make
[9:25] Speaker 1: sure you come back and you'll see what I mean.
[9:28] Speaker 1: Let's say it. The Bible is the best story ever told.
[9:32] Speaker 1: It's God's story to you. And it's all true. Enjoyed
