[1:12] Speaker 4: He came to serve everyone. In our last story, Jesus
[1:17] Speaker 4: raised Lazarus from the dead after four days of being
[1:21] Speaker 4: in the tomb.
[1:22] Speaker 5: In this story, Jesus teaches on who is the greatest,
[1:27] Speaker 5: forgives Zacchaeus, the tax collector, and heals Bartimaeus, as inspired
[1:33] Speaker 5: by the Gospels.
[1:37] Speaker 1: Hi everyone, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress Sadler.
[1:41] Speaker 1: Thanks for jumping in on another episode of the Kids
[1:44] Speaker 1: Bible in a Year podcast. How to be great and
[1:48] Speaker 1: how to get to Jesus? That's what we're going to
[1:51] Speaker 1: be talking about in today's story. Listen closely. We all
[1:56] Speaker 1: need to hear this one.
[1:57] Speaker 4: A mother of two sons came to approach Jesus and
[2:03] Speaker 4: to ask him a question. And she then knelt down
[2:07] Speaker 4: pleading to him. Jesus wanted to know what she wanted
[2:11] Speaker 4: and said, Please allow my sons to sit at the
[2:15] Speaker 4: throne next to you. One can sit on your left side.
[2:19] Speaker 4: and the other can sit on your right side in
[2:21] Speaker 4: your kingdom. Jesus then explained that she did not know
[2:25] Speaker 4: what she was asking. Then she looked to both sons
[2:29] Speaker 4: and said, Would you be able to drink out of
[2:32] Speaker 4: the same cup that I have to drink from? The
[2:35] Speaker 4: two sons both answered that they would be able to.
[2:39] Speaker 4: Jesus responded, You both will surely drink from this cup.
[2:44] Speaker 4: But when it comes to who will be sitting on
[2:46] Speaker 4: my left and right, That is not a decision for
[2:49] Speaker 4: me to make, but it is only for the Father
[2:52] Speaker 4: to say. The other ten heard about this conversation, and
[2:56] Speaker 4: they became angry with both of the sons. Jesus then
[3:00] Speaker 4: called all of them to gather around and explained, There
[3:03] Speaker 4: are rulers of this world who will try to control
[3:06] Speaker 4: others with their authority.
[3:08] Speaker 3: But for you, it should be different.
[3:11] Speaker 4: If you want to be considered great amongst others, you
[3:14] Speaker 4: must know that you are to serve others first, just
[3:18] Speaker 4: as Jesus Christ did.
[3:20] Speaker 2: He came to this.
[3:21] Speaker 4: Earth to serve others, not to have others serve him.
[3:25] Speaker 4: And then he continued to serve others by giving up
[3:28] Speaker 4: his life for all of mankind. Jesus was traveling and
[3:34] Speaker 4: had passed through the city of Jericho, where there was
[3:38] Speaker 4: a man who lived there named Zacchaeus. This man was
[3:42] Speaker 4: very rich because of his profession. which was being a
[3:46] Speaker 4: wicked tax collector leader. He had overheard that Jesus was
[3:50] Speaker 4: coming into his town and.
[3:51] Speaker 2: Wanted to see him.
[3:53] Speaker 4: Zacchaeus was a short man who was not able to
[3:56] Speaker 4: see over the crowds, so he decided that he would
[3:59] Speaker 4: be able to get a better look at him if
[4:00] Speaker 4: he climbed up a tree. So Zacchaeus did just that.
[4:05] Speaker 4: He climbed up a sycamore fig tree and waited for
[4:08] Speaker 4: Jesus to pass by. As Jesus passed by the tree,
[4:12] Speaker 4: he looked up to find Zacchaeus. and called him to
[4:15] Speaker 4: climb down the tree and said, I will stay at
[4:18] Speaker 4: your house this day. So very quickly, Zacchaeus came down
[4:22] Speaker 4: the tree so that he could welcome Jesus into his house.
[4:26] Speaker 4: The crowd that saw this happen began to mumble, expressing
[4:29] Speaker 4: how shocked they were that Jesus Christ would want to
[4:32] Speaker 4: go to such a big sinner's household. During their time together,
[4:36] Speaker 4: Zacchaeus was convicted and expressed to Christ, I will give
[4:41] Speaker 4: half of all my possessions back to the poor and
[4:44] Speaker 4: for all the people that I have cheated, I will
[4:47] Speaker 4: pay them four times more than what I stole from them.
[4:51] Speaker 4: The Lord told him, Since you too are a son
[4:55] Speaker 4: of Abraham, salvation has come to this house because I
[4:59] Speaker 4: came to find and save those who are lost. While
[5:02] Speaker 4: Jesus and the disciples were still in Jericho, they began
[5:06] Speaker 4: to draw a large crowd, and there was a poor
[5:09] Speaker 4: blind man there named Bartimaeus. He was on the side
[5:13] Speaker 4: of the road begging, When he heard the crowd talk
[5:16] Speaker 4: about the Son of Man being there, he started to
[5:18] Speaker 4: cry out to Jesus.
[5:20] Speaker 2: Saying, Lord, have mercy on my soul.
[5:23] Speaker 4: Many of the people there tried to get him to
[5:26] Speaker 4: be quiet, but that's when he began to.
[5:28] Speaker 2: Shout louder, saying, Jesus, please, have mercy on me.
[5:34] Speaker 4: At this point, Jesus told his disciples to go get him,
[5:38] Speaker 4: and so they told him to get up to his
[5:40] Speaker 4: feet and go see the Lord. Then, He threw off
[5:44] Speaker 4: his coat that he was wearing and ran to Jesus.
[5:48] Speaker 4: He asked Bartimaeus what he wanted. Bartimaeus said that he
[5:53] Speaker 4: wanted to be able to see. Jesus said, your faith
[5:58] Speaker 4: is the reason you are healed.
[6:00] Speaker 3: So go on your way.
[6:03] Speaker 4: As soon as he said this, Bartimaeus was able to
[6:07] Speaker 4: see again.
[6:14] Speaker 2: Anyone else singing the Zacchaeus song in their head? Just me?
[6:18] Speaker 1: Today's story opens with a mom of two sons, James
[6:22] Speaker 1: and John, who really wanted her sons to be seen
[6:25] Speaker 1: as great and important.
[6:27] Speaker 2: It seems as if they wanted that too. But what
[6:31] Speaker 2: have we learned.
[6:32] Speaker 1: Through so many of these stories? Jesus wants us to
[6:35] Speaker 1: be humble and remember that he is the great one.
[6:39] Speaker 1: This mother asked Jesus if her two sons could each
[6:43] Speaker 1: sit on his right and left in his kingdom. But
[6:47] Speaker 1: the answer she received was not exactly what she was
[6:50] Speaker 1: hoping for. Jesus explained something we've talked about a lot
[6:55] Speaker 1: on here. Having the most important seat, position, or place in.
[6:59] Speaker 2: Life is not what makes you great.
[7:03] Speaker 1: So what does make you great? According to Jesus, the
[7:07] Speaker 1: answer is serving others. Think about the life of Jesus.
[7:13] Speaker 1: He was in heaven and the most perfect place ever,
[7:16] Speaker 1: with no sadness, dying, or pain. And not only that,
[7:19] Speaker 1: he was with his father, whom he loved so very much.
[7:23] Speaker 1: But despite all of that, he chose to leave his
[7:26] Speaker 1: throne in heaven, come to a dirty, stinky stable, and
[7:30] Speaker 1: live among us on earth. He served others every day
[7:34] Speaker 1: of his life and eventually died on the cross so
[7:37] Speaker 1: we could be with him in heaven one day. Now
[7:40] Speaker 1: that is a servant. Do you want to be seen
[7:44] Speaker 1: as great in the eyes of God?
[7:46] Speaker 2: Serve others.
[7:48] Speaker 1: Next, we meet a super short dude named Zacharias. He
[7:52] Speaker 1: was a tax collector known for cheating and stealing from people.
[7:56] Speaker 1: He was so determined to see Jesus passing by his
[7:59] Speaker 1: city that he climbed right up into a sycamore tree.
[8:03] Speaker 1: I can just see Jesus catching his eye, looking right
[8:07] Speaker 1: up at him and saying, Okay.
[8:09] Speaker 2: Come down now. I'm coming over.
[8:12] Speaker 1: Jesus and Zacchaeus had a special conversation at his house.
[8:17] Speaker 1: Jesus loved him enough to spend time with him, even
[8:20] Speaker 1: though he had such a bad reputation. No one understood
[8:23] Speaker 1: why in the world someone like Jesus would want to
[8:26] Speaker 1: hang out with someone like Zacchaeus. But Jesus didn't do
[8:30] Speaker 1: things like everyone else. He knew Zacchaeus needed him, and
[8:33] Speaker 1: that's what mattered most. Because of that, Zacchaeus felt loved
[8:38] Speaker 1: and important. It made him want to do the right thing.
[8:41] Speaker 1: So he promised to give half of everything he had
[8:44] Speaker 1: to the poor and pay back the people he stole
[8:47] Speaker 1: from four times the amount. Jesus forgave him, of course,
[8:53] Speaker 1: and loved him when no one else did. The last
[8:57] Speaker 1: story we heard was about a blind man named Bartimaeus.
[9:01] Speaker 1: He cried out for Jesus to heal him and to
[9:04] Speaker 1: help him see again. He knew that if he kept yelling,
[9:07] Speaker 1: no matter how many people said to, shh, Jesus would hear.
[9:12] Speaker 1: When Jesus told his friends to get him, they went
[9:15] Speaker 1: over to Bartimaeus and said, hurry.
[9:17] Speaker 2: Get up. Jesus is calling you.
[9:20] Speaker 1: Jesus healed his blindness and taught us once again how
[9:23] Speaker 1: important it is to have faith. Maybe today, like Bartimaeus,
[9:29] Speaker 1: you need to get up and run to Jesus. Maybe
[9:33] Speaker 1: he's calling you too. Jesus wants to hear from you
[9:37] Speaker 1: through prayer. Speak to your heart through the Bible. and
[9:41] Speaker 1: help you be more like him today, more like a servant.
[9:45] Speaker 1: Thank you for listening. The next time we're together, we'll
[9:49] Speaker 1: enter the final days of Jesus's life. We are going
[9:52] Speaker 1: to find him riding into Jerusalem on a donkey, determined
[9:56] Speaker 1: to obey his father, no matter the cost.
[10:00] Speaker 2: Let's say it.
[10:01] Speaker 1: The Bible is the best story ever told. It's God's
