[1:14] Speaker 3: Name it. In our last story, Alicia healed the son
[1:19] Speaker 3: of a Shumanite woman. In this story, name it. A
[1:23] Speaker 3: gentle army commander from Aram, or Syria, will be healed
[1:28] Speaker 3: of leprosy by Elisha, as inspired by second kings.
[1:36] Speaker 1: Hi friends, it's Joy Sadler here. Thanks for joining me
[1:40] Speaker 1: again for Kids Bible in the Air podcast. We're learning
[1:44] Speaker 1: a huge lesson today from a guy named Naaman. He
[1:47] Speaker 1: started off with spots all over his body and ended
[1:51] Speaker 1: up in what I would call the greatest bath ever.
[1:55] Speaker 1: Listen in and you'll see what I mean.
[1:57] Speaker 3: Naaman was an army commander and he was highly favored
[2:05] Speaker 3: in the eyes of his master because it was through
[2:07] Speaker 3: him that the Lord gave victory to Aram. Naaman was
[2:11] Speaker 3: a great man, but he was afflicted by leprosy. During
[2:15] Speaker 3: a certain war, Soldiers from Aram went out and took
[2:19] Speaker 3: captive a young girl from Israel, and she became the
[2:22] Speaker 3: servant of Naaman's wife. The young servant said, Naaman reported
[2:27] Speaker 3: to his master what the Israelite servant said. His master said,
[2:29] Speaker 3: Naaman departed. and took with him about 750 pounds of silver,
[2:50] Speaker 3: 150 pounds of gold, and 10 changes of clothes. Naaman
[2:54] Speaker 3: delivered the letter from his master to the king of Israel,
[2:57] Speaker 3: and the letter said, When you read this letter, you
[3:00] Speaker 3: will know that I have sent my servant to be
[3:03] Speaker 3: healed from this leprosy. The king of Israel cried out,
[3:07] Speaker 3: Who do you think I am?
[3:08] Speaker 2: I don't have orders to heal this man from this disease.
[3:13] Speaker 3: Elisha heard that the king of Israel was upset, so
[3:16] Speaker 3: he insisted that Naaman leave the presence of the king
[3:19] Speaker 3: and come stand at the doorway of his house. So
[3:22] Speaker 3: Naaman went and stood at the doorway of the house
[3:25] Speaker 3: of Elisha. Elisha sent a messenger to Naaman. The prophet
[3:30] Speaker 3: Elisha said to wash seven times in the Jordan River,
[3:34] Speaker 3: and you will be healed. Naaman was furious at this answer.
[3:39] Speaker 3: I thought that Elisha would at least come to meet me.
[3:41] Speaker 3: and pray to his God, but washing seven times in
[3:44] Speaker 3: the Jordan River is ridiculous. I clean myself regularly with
[3:49] Speaker 3: clean water. Naaman left in anger until his servants said
[3:53] Speaker 3: to him, If the prophet told you to do something greater,
[3:57] Speaker 3: you would have done it already. But this is something small,
[4:00] Speaker 3: and you are refusing to do it. Naaman listened to
[4:04] Speaker 3: his servant and washed in the Jordan seven times, just
[4:08] Speaker 3: as the man of God had said.
[4:11] Speaker 4: And he Well, it sounds like the book of Kings
[4:21] Speaker 4: is full of miracles, and today we heard about another one.
[4:25] Speaker 1: Let's dive in. As we're introduced to Naaman, we hear
[4:30] Speaker 1: that he was a strong, popular army commander who many
[4:34] Speaker 1: people admired. He was obviously a hard worker too, because
[4:38] Speaker 1: the Bible tells us, that his master liked him a lot.
[4:43] Speaker 1: But no matter how great this Naaman was, there was
[4:46] Speaker 1: one big giant problem. He had a disease called leprosy.
[4:52] Speaker 1: Leprosy was a sickness people sometimes caught back then, and
[4:56] Speaker 1: it was just awful. It was very contagious, very painful,
[5:01] Speaker 1: and if you saw someone coming who had leprosy, you
[5:04] Speaker 1: would usually go the opposite way. Leprosy would start off
[5:08] Speaker 1: with red spots all over your body, which would soon
[5:12] Speaker 1: turn white. And the longer you had this disease, the
[5:16] Speaker 1: worse it would get, until finally it would kill you.
[5:20] Speaker 1: Usually people with leprosy were seen as dirty or not
[5:24] Speaker 1: as good as everyone else. No one really wanted them around. Alright,
[5:30] Speaker 1: so next we come across a servant girl who helped
[5:33] Speaker 1: Naaman's wife. She had clearly heard of Elisha and the
[5:38] Speaker 1: great things God was doing through him because she told
[5:42] Speaker 1: Naaman's wife all about him. If only Naaman could get
[5:47] Speaker 1: near Elisha, he would be healed. So when the king
[5:52] Speaker 1: of Syria agreed to send a letter to the king
[5:55] Speaker 1: of Israel asking for help, we can only imagine how
[5:59] Speaker 1: happy this little servant girl was. So Naaman went on
[6:04] Speaker 1: his way with gold, silver, and clothing to deliver the letter.
[6:09] Speaker 1: Before anything else happened, he found himself on the doorway
[6:13] Speaker 1: of Elisha's house. But there was no Elisha. Instead, there
[6:18] Speaker 1: was a messenger who told him to wash in the
[6:21] Speaker 1: Jordan River seven times if he wanted to be healed. Wow,
[6:26] Speaker 1: great news, right? Not according to Naaman.
[6:31] Speaker 4: In fact, he was mad.
[6:33] Speaker 1: He wanted Elisha to come see him face to face
[6:36] Speaker 1: and perform a dramatic miracle for all to see. You see,
[6:41] Speaker 1: Naaman was so well liked and such a good commander
[6:45] Speaker 1: that he was used to people showing him respect. He
[6:48] Speaker 1: wanted to be noticed, admired, and honored by Elisha. Instead,
[6:53] Speaker 1: Elisha did not even show up. On top of that,
[6:57] Speaker 1: Being told to wash in the Jordan River didn't sound
[7:00] Speaker 1: too great either. This meant that Naaman was dirty and
[7:04] Speaker 1: needed to be cleaned. Seven times, that is. Again, he
[7:09] Speaker 1: felt disrespected and just not very important. So this was
[7:14] Speaker 1: not going the way Naaman imagined it would. He didn't
[7:17] Speaker 1: think any healing was going to take place. The truth is,
[7:21] Speaker 1: we are sometimes like Naaman in the stories. We want
[7:25] Speaker 1: God to answer our prayers and make things happen our
[7:28] Speaker 1: way and in our time. If God seems distant or
[7:32] Speaker 1: even late, we get impatient, just like Naaman. But listen
[7:36] Speaker 1: closely to this super important truth. It's a truth you
[7:40] Speaker 1: will have to go back to time and time again
[7:43] Speaker 1: throughout your life. So if you hear anything on this
[7:47] Speaker 1: podcast today, hear this. No matter what we think, how
[7:52] Speaker 1: we feel, or whether or not we understand what He's doing,
[7:57] Speaker 1: God's ways are always better than our ways. In Isaiah
[8:04] Speaker 1: 55 9, God says His ways are higher than our ways.
[8:07] Speaker 1: Have you ever heard that before? What do you think
[8:11] Speaker 1: higher means? For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
[8:15] Speaker 1: so are my ways higher than your ways, and my
[8:19] Speaker 1: thoughts than your thoughts. This means that while we are
[8:24] Speaker 1: on earth, our brains are pretty small and limited. We
[8:27] Speaker 1: can only think a certain way and see things in
[8:30] Speaker 1: our little circle. But God, he sees everything. He has
[8:35] Speaker 1: all the knowledge and wisdom of the world. Knows the
[8:39] Speaker 1: beginning from the end. And most importantly, he knows exactly
[8:43] Speaker 1: what we need and when we need it. Whew, that's
[8:48] Speaker 1: such great news. You know why? Because it means we
[8:51] Speaker 1: can trust him. Even when we don't get it and
[8:55] Speaker 1: we really, really, really want him to do things our way,
[8:59] Speaker 1: we can rest in his perfect plan. Naaman's servant convinced
[9:03] Speaker 1: him to do as Elijah said, even if it made
[9:06] Speaker 1: him angry. So the Bible says he took a deep
[9:10] Speaker 1: plunge into the Jordan River. That sounds like faith to me.
[9:14] Speaker 1: And thank goodness. He did because after he washed seven times,
[9:19] Speaker 1: the leprosy disappeared. I'm so glad Naaman chose to do
[9:23] Speaker 1: things God's way. And I hope you will too. Thanks
[9:28] Speaker 1: for listening. Next time we're going to hear about how
[9:31] Speaker 1: Elisha's friend Gehazi had to learn a very hard lesson.
[9:37] Speaker 1: Let's just say he did not do things God's way
[9:40] Speaker 1: and he paid a big price because of it. Here
[9:43] Speaker 1: we go. The Bible is the best story ever told.
[9:48] Speaker 1: It's God's story to you. And it's all true. Enjoy
