[1:15] Speaker 3: Paul's Trip to Iconium In our last story, Paul and
[1:20] Speaker 3: Barnabas began their missionary journey. In this story... Paul and
[1:25] Speaker 3: Barnabas will continue to preach and heal, but Paul will
[1:29] Speaker 3: be dragged out of the city in Lystra and stoned,
[1:33] Speaker 3: as inspired by Acts.
[1:39] Speaker 1: Welcome back. This is Julianne Thompson guest hosting for Julia
[1:43] Speaker 1: Jeffress Sadler with a new episode of the Kids Bible
[1:46] Speaker 1: in a Year podcast. Today's story may be a little
[1:50] Speaker 1: hard to hear. Paul has been so faithful and strong
[1:54] Speaker 1: in preaching the gospel. But today, things are getting hard.
[1:58] Speaker 1: Let's listen in and see how God shows up and
[2:01] Speaker 1: the way Paul's friends help him back on his feet.
[2:07] Speaker 3: After Paul and Barnabas arrived in Iconium, they went to
[2:10] Speaker 3: the temple as usual where they spoke to the Jews
[2:13] Speaker 3: and the Gentiles. And a great number of them became believers.
[2:18] Speaker 3: There were some Jews who did not believe. and began
[2:21] Speaker 3: to tell the other Gentiles lies and pit them against
[2:25] Speaker 3: the believers. In response, Paul and Barnabas continued preaching the
[2:29] Speaker 3: word of the Lord, and God gave them the power
[2:32] Speaker 3: to perform miracles and healings. People in the city began
[2:36] Speaker 3: to form different opinions, which created division between the people
[2:40] Speaker 3: who believed the Jews and the people who believed the apostles.
[2:45] Speaker 3: The Jews and Gentiles came together, and plotted to beat
[2:49] Speaker 3: up the apostles and their following. So they ran to
[2:52] Speaker 3: Lystra and Derbe and continued to proclaim the message of
[2:56] Speaker 3: Jesus Christ. While in Lystra, Paul and Barnabas encountered a
[3:01] Speaker 3: man who was not able to walk and could not
[3:04] Speaker 3: do so since he was born. The man listened to
[3:08] Speaker 3: Paul's message that he was giving to the people, and
[3:10] Speaker 3: Paul looked into his eyes and said, Get up to
[3:14] Speaker 3: your feet. With those very words, The man began to walk.
[3:19] Speaker 3: The crowd was amazed at what Paul had just done.
[3:22] Speaker 3: And in their own language, they said, The gods have
[3:26] Speaker 3: taken human form. How did this happen? They gave Paul
[3:31] Speaker 3: and Barnabas names of their gods. To Paul, they gave
[3:34] Speaker 3: the name Hermes. And to Barnabas, they gave the name Zeus.
[3:39] Speaker 3: When word got to Paul and Barnabas that the people
[3:42] Speaker 3: had called them gods, They ripped their clothes and rebuked
[3:46] Speaker 3: the people, saying, Why are you giving us names of
[3:49] Speaker 3: your gods? We are not gods. We are men with
[3:52] Speaker 3: human flesh just like you. We bring this message by
[3:56] Speaker 3: the power of the one true God creator of all.
[3:59] Speaker 3: God has shown you mercy and provided you with what
[4:03] Speaker 3: you need. He filled your storehouses with plenty and brought
[4:07] Speaker 3: joy to your souls. The crowd still made attempts to
[4:11] Speaker 3: make sacrifices to them, believing that Hermes and Zeus were speaking.
[4:17] Speaker 3: The Jews who were against Paul and Barnabas found their
[4:20] Speaker 3: way to Lystra and began to convince the crowd to
[4:23] Speaker 3: follow their ideas. They slowly won the crowd, and then
[4:29] Speaker 3: they proceeded to stone Paul. They drug his dead-looking body
[4:33] Speaker 3: to the outskirts of the city, thinking they had killed him.
[4:37] Speaker 3: But the disciples came and gathered around him, and he
[4:40] Speaker 3: got back up. The very next morning, Paul and Barnabas
[4:44] Speaker 3: got up and left for their next stop, Derbe. At Derbe,
[4:49] Speaker 3: they both preached, and many people became believers. Once they
[4:53] Speaker 3: had completed their work, they went back to Lystra and
[4:56] Speaker 3: the other areas they were in previously. They went to
[5:00] Speaker 3: encourage the followers they had gathered in those areas to
[5:03] Speaker 3: stay strong in the faith and not lose heart through
[5:08] Speaker 3: the trials they were going to face. They then assigned
[5:11] Speaker 3: elders and leaders to each of the churches and dedicated
[5:14] Speaker 3: them to the Lord through prayer and fasting. After all this,
[5:19] Speaker 3: they went to Pamphylia, then to Perga to preach, and
[5:24] Speaker 3: then went to Adelia. After they arrived in Adelia, they
[5:30] Speaker 3: sailed back to Antioch, where all this began. They came
[5:35] Speaker 3: back to the place from where they were launched into
[5:38] Speaker 3: missionary work by God. When they got off the boat,
[5:41] Speaker 3: they called for a meeting of the church to tell
[5:43] Speaker 3: them everything God had done on their journey. They reported
[5:47] Speaker 3: the conversions of many Gentiles and decided to stay in
[5:50] Speaker 3: Antioch with the disciples for a long time.
[5:58] Speaker 1: Don't you just love that last part? They stayed with
[6:02] Speaker 1: the disciples for a long time. Boy, did they need that. Well,
[6:08] Speaker 1: as we open, Paul and Barnabas arrive in Iconium, head
[6:11] Speaker 1: straight to the temple, and begin preaching the gospel to
[6:14] Speaker 1: both Jews and Gentiles. And as we heard in the story,
[6:18] Speaker 1: many believed. But some of the Jews were not happy.
[6:21] Speaker 1: They caused lots of problems and told lies about Paul.
[6:25] Speaker 1: But do you think that stopped Paul and Barnabas? Of
[6:28] Speaker 1: course not. They kept on preaching and even stayed there
[6:32] Speaker 1: a long time to help the new believers understand their message.
[6:37] Speaker 1: and to encourage them to stand strong. When Paul and
[6:41] Speaker 1: Barnabas heard about a plot to stone them, they left
[6:44] Speaker 1: for two other cities in the area, Lystra and Derbe.
[6:49] Speaker 1: As we heard, after Paul healed a man who couldn't walk,
[6:52] Speaker 1: people in the town of Lystra decided that Paul and
[6:55] Speaker 1: Barnabas were gods in human form. They even wanted to
[6:59] Speaker 1: worship them and make sacrifices to them. Sometimes when God
[7:04] Speaker 1: uses you to do great things, it can be easy
[7:07] Speaker 1: for people to think that you are the reason great
[7:10] Speaker 1: things are happening. It's easy to take all the credit
[7:14] Speaker 1: and the glory and say, yeah, I guess I'm pretty great.
[7:18] Speaker 1: But as we heard in today's story, that's not what
[7:22] Speaker 1: Paul and Barnabas did. In fact, the last thing that
[7:26] Speaker 1: they wanted to do was take credit for what God
[7:28] Speaker 1: was accomplishing through them. They told the people that they
[7:32] Speaker 1: were simple men. The only power that they had was
[7:37] Speaker 1: from the Holy Spirit of the one true God. It
[7:41] Speaker 1: was nothing in them. It was all God. But sadly,
[7:46] Speaker 1: things seemed to go downhill from there. The Jews that
[7:50] Speaker 1: were against Paul and Silas found them in Lystra, threw
[7:54] Speaker 1: lots of stones at Paul, and tried to kill him.
[7:57] Speaker 1: He was hurt. Badly. They drug him out of the
[8:02] Speaker 1: city and left him there to die. This is hard
[8:05] Speaker 1: to hear. It's tough to understand why God allows certain
[8:09] Speaker 1: things to happen. Paul was now suffering in a whole
[8:12] Speaker 1: new way, beaten and bleeding, but never alone. God took
[8:18] Speaker 1: care of Paul and sent some disciples to help him
[8:21] Speaker 1: and comfort him. And somehow, I think we know how,
[8:25] Speaker 1: he got right back up and continued his missionary journey.
[8:29] Speaker 1: this time to take place in Derby. Again, many who
[8:34] Speaker 1: heard the message there believed. And after that, Paul and
[8:37] Speaker 1: Barnabas went back to the places they had visited to
[8:40] Speaker 1: encourage believers to be strong and keep following Jesus, no
[8:45] Speaker 1: matter what. They eventually sailed back to Antioch, their home
[8:49] Speaker 1: church who sent them out to begin with. Oh, the
[8:52] Speaker 1: stories they had to tell. I love how the Bible
[8:56] Speaker 1: tells us that after they shared all their stories, they
[9:00] Speaker 1: stayed there with the disciples for a long time. You see,
[9:05] Speaker 1: it's important to get out into the world and do
[9:07] Speaker 1: what God is calling you to do. It's good to
[9:10] Speaker 1: share his love with others and work hard at the
[9:12] Speaker 1: job he's given you. But sometimes you need to be
[9:16] Speaker 1: with the people you know who love God and who
[9:19] Speaker 1: follow him. We need to be encouraged by each other
[9:22] Speaker 1: and reminded of why we do this. We need friendship, connection,
[9:27] Speaker 1: and love from those who are in God's family. Surely
[9:30] Speaker 1: that's what Paul and Barnabas needed. And as usual, God provided.
[9:36] Speaker 1: Thank you for listening. And come back next time to
[9:38] Speaker 1: hear how a big argument about what makes us saved. Hint,
[9:43] Speaker 1: it's not the law. And learn about a new world
