Join Julia Jeffress Sadler as she takes us on an incredible adventure in Episode 124. In this podcast episode, we tell the story of King Josiah, a young but righteous king who ruled Judah. Starting his reign at just eight years old, Josiah is remembered for his love and devotion to God. Eighteen years into his rule, he embarks on a project to repair the temple, where a significant discovery is made: a book of the law written by Moses. Josiah's reaction to this discovery is one of deep concern for his people's neglect of God's commands. Seeking guidance, he consults the prophetess Huldah, who delivers a sobering prophecy. Yet, there's a glimmer of hope for Josiah due to his humble response. Inspired by God's message, Josiah gathers his people, renews the covenant with God, and leads a spiritual revival in Judah. [1:49] Speaker 1: Hi there, it's Joya Sadler with the Kids Bible in
[1:52] Speaker 1: a Year podcast. I'm so happy you're here. Today we
[1:56] Speaker 1: get to hear an exciting story about King Josiah and
[1:59] Speaker 1: what happens when he finds the book of the law
[2:02] Speaker 1: after no one has seen it for many years. What
[2:06] Speaker 1: did the people do when they heard what it said?
[2:09] Speaker 1: Let's jump in and find out.
[2:14] Speaker 3: Josiah became the king of Judah when he was only
[2:17] Speaker 3: eight years old. He was a good king that loved
[2:21] Speaker 3: God until he died. He was the last good king
[2:24] Speaker 3: the nation had before they were taken away from their land.
[2:29] Speaker 3: Eighteen years after he became king, Josiah decided that he
[2:34] Speaker 3: wanted to fix up God's temple. So, he hired some
[2:38] Speaker 3: men from the city to do it. He gave them
[2:41] Speaker 3: money that had been set aside for fixing the temple,
[2:44] Speaker 3: and because they were honest men, he did not make
[2:47] Speaker 3: them keep track of the money. While working in the temple,
[2:51] Speaker 3: one of the men found a book of the law
[2:53] Speaker 3: that was written by Moses. He quickly sent it to
[2:56] Speaker 3: the king Josiah. The king had the entire book read aloud,
[3:01] Speaker 3: but when he heard what was written in the book,
[3:04] Speaker 3: he became very upset and cried out to God. He
[3:07] Speaker 3: said to those around him, God must be very angry
[3:11] Speaker 3: with us. Those that came before us promised to worship
[3:14] Speaker 3: only God and to follow his commands always, but all
[3:18] Speaker 3: our people have turned from him and don't keep to
[3:21] Speaker 3: the promise that was made. Again and again the promise
[3:25] Speaker 3: has been broken. Our punishment can't be too far in
[3:28] Speaker 3: the future. King Josiah sent one of his servants to
[3:32] Speaker 3: find someone that could talk to God about what was
[3:35] Speaker 3: found in the book and their coming judgment. They went
[3:39] Speaker 3: into the city and found a woman named Huldah. She
[3:43] Speaker 3: was a prophet or someone that speaks with God. They
[3:46] Speaker 3: told her about the book of the law of Moses
[3:49] Speaker 3: and asked for a message from God concerning what was
[3:52] Speaker 3: to come. because they didn't keep their promise to him.
[3:56] Speaker 3: After hearing about the book, God spoke a message to
[3:59] Speaker 3: her for the people. God has given me this message,
[4:04] Speaker 3: she said. He said to me that the people of
[4:07] Speaker 3: this city have completely turned away from me. They serve
[4:11] Speaker 3: other gods and don't obey my commands. The judgment you
[4:15] Speaker 3: read about in this book will happen soon. Everyone in
[4:19] Speaker 3: this city will see my judgment and no one will
[4:23] Speaker 3: be able to stop it from coming. She paused and
[4:26] Speaker 3: then heard another word from God. He says to the
[4:30] Speaker 3: king Josiah, I saw that you cried when you read
[4:35] Speaker 3: this book and heard of the coming judgment. I know
[4:38] Speaker 3: your heart was sad and you cried out to me humbly.
[4:41] Speaker 3: I have heard your cries and because of this, I
[4:44] Speaker 3: will not bring the judgment until you have passed away.
[4:49] Speaker 3: The priests listened closely to the words she spoke and
[4:52] Speaker 3: took the message back to the king. After listening to
[4:55] Speaker 3: the words of God, Josiah called for all the leaders
[4:59] Speaker 3: of the cities of Israel. The leaders then called for
[5:02] Speaker 3: the people of the city to gather at the temple
[5:04] Speaker 3: so they could all hear the words of God. Josiah
[5:08] Speaker 3: then read the law of Moses from the book that
[5:11] Speaker 3: was found aloud for the city to hear. They listened
[5:15] Speaker 3: to the promises that were made to God by those
[5:18] Speaker 3: that came before them. Then after the law was read,
[5:22] Speaker 3: King Josiah went to the place reserved for the king. Then,
[5:26] Speaker 3: in front of the people of the city, he vowed
[5:29] Speaker 3: to keep all the vows that were made by Moses
[5:32] Speaker 3: and the Israelites of that time. He vowed in front
[5:36] Speaker 3: of his people to wholeheartedly seek to keep God's commandments
[5:41] Speaker 3: for the rest of his life. Then, because of the
[5:44] Speaker 3: king's will to please God, the people agreed to the same.
[5:54] Speaker 1: Yay all right before we go any further i want
[5:58] Speaker 1: to just take a minute and stop and celebrate do
[6:01] Speaker 1: you know how fantastic it is that god's people found
[6:05] Speaker 1: the book of the law it's a big huge incredible
[6:08] Speaker 1: fantastic and awesome deal so let's take just a minute
[6:13] Speaker 1: to do a happy dance woohoo god's word has been
[6:17] Speaker 1: found now do you know why it's such a big
[6:21] Speaker 1: huge incredible wonderful awesome amazing deal that God's word has
[6:26] Speaker 1: been found? Well, imagine that there were no Bibles anywhere
[6:31] Speaker 1: at all anymore. Worse, imagine the last time anyone had
[6:37] Speaker 1: even seen a Bible was when your grandparents or great-grandparents
[6:42] Speaker 1: were teenagers. There'd be no Bibles on phones or computers,
[6:49] Speaker 1: no videos, storybooks, or even podcasts like this to help
[6:53] Speaker 1: you learn about God When today's story happened, there was
[6:57] Speaker 1: nothing to teach anyone how to know or love God
[7:02] Speaker 1: except what people kind of remembered. And that was a
[7:07] Speaker 1: lot like playing the game of telephone. Have you ever
[7:11] Speaker 1: played the game of telephone? It's where you line up five, six,
[7:15] Speaker 1: ten people and whisper a phrase like, The moon is
[7:20] Speaker 1: made of cheese into the first person's ear. Then they
[7:24] Speaker 1: whisper it to the next person. Then they whisper it
[7:27] Speaker 1: to the next person. And all the way down until
[7:31] Speaker 1: the person at the end tells everyone what was whispered
[7:35] Speaker 1: to them. And they say, baboons sure like to sneeze.
[7:41] Speaker 1: That's kind of what happened in Judah when people tried
[7:44] Speaker 1: to understand God. You see, without being able to read
[7:48] Speaker 1: God's word for themselves, no one knew who God really
[7:52] Speaker 1: was or what he liked. They didn't know how dangerous
[7:56] Speaker 1: sin was or all the promises God had made and
[7:59] Speaker 1: kept to his people. They just kind of sort of
[8:02] Speaker 1: maybe remembered a little bit of what was in there.
[8:06] Speaker 1: No wonder everyone was confused. The whole nation was disobeying
[8:11] Speaker 1: God and following fake gods because they had forgotten how
[8:15] Speaker 1: to follow the Lord. But when the book of the
[8:19] Speaker 1: law was found and King Josiah read it to everyone, Man,
[8:24] Speaker 1: oh man, it was fantastic. In fact, it was big, huge, incredible, wonderful, awesome,
[8:31] Speaker 1: and amazing because now everybody understood God's goodness for themselves.
[8:38] Speaker 1: They didn't have to guess what God wanted for them.
[8:41] Speaker 1: They already knew. Suddenly, it was clear how to love
[8:46] Speaker 1: and obey God, and this gave people so much joy
[8:51] Speaker 1: because that everybody did a little happy dance. They weren't
[8:55] Speaker 1: confused anymore, and they promised to love God with their
[8:59] Speaker 1: whole hearts again. Now today, the Bible is everywhere, but many, many,
[9:04] Speaker 1: many people don't read it. Some just kind of sort
[9:08] Speaker 1: of maybe remember a little bit of what's in there,
[9:12] Speaker 1: and others play telephone with what it says. They believe
[9:16] Speaker 1: what someone tells thought they heard from another guy who
[9:20] Speaker 1: was watching someone on TV say they read on a
[9:24] Speaker 1: blog somewhere. Isn't that silly? God gave us his word
[9:28] Speaker 1: so that he could talk to us himself. He loves
[9:32] Speaker 1: you so much that he wrote down all his promises
[9:36] Speaker 1: and stories of his faithfulness so that you would never
[9:40] Speaker 1: forget them. And the best way to know who God
[9:44] Speaker 1: is and what he's like is to read your Bible
[9:47] Speaker 1: for yourself again and again and again. Not to play
[9:53] Speaker 1: the game of telephone or just rely on the bits
[9:56] Speaker 1: you kind of sort of maybe remember. King David said,
[10:00] Speaker 1: god's word is like a bright street light when you're
[10:04] Speaker 1: walking down a long dark road at night and the
[10:07] Speaker 1: apostle paul said that every word in the bible is
[10:11] Speaker 1: like god's whisper in your ear teaching you how to
[10:15] Speaker 1: love and obey him and reminding you that he loves
[10:18] Speaker 1: you very much And I think that's a big, huge, incredible, wonderful, awesome,
[10:24] Speaker 1: amazing deal. I'm so happy you joined me today. Come
[10:29] Speaker 1: back next time to hear about all the wonderful things
[10:32] Speaker 1: that happened while Josiah was king of Judah. Remember, the
[10:37] Speaker 1: Bible is the best story ever told. It's God's story
