[1:17] Speaker 2: Jesus' Death and Burial In our last story, Jesus was
[1:22] Speaker 2: taken before Pilate and beaten. The crowd demanded Jesus be crucified,
[1:28] Speaker 2: and Pilate washed his hands clean and released Jesus to
[1:32] Speaker 2: be crucified. In this story, we will learn about the
[1:35] Speaker 2: death and burial of Jesus, as inspired by the Gospels.
[1:46] Speaker 1: Hi friends, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress Sadler.
[1:51] Speaker 1: And I am so glad you're here for another episode
[1:53] Speaker 1: of the Kids Bible in a Year podcast. Today, God's
[1:57] Speaker 1: great perfect plan is accomplished. And we say an earthly
[2:03] Speaker 1: goodbye to Jesus, our Lord and our Savior. He has
[2:07] Speaker 1: taught us so much. Thankfully, we know the end.
[2:11] Speaker 2: Of the story.
[2:12] Speaker 1: So although we feel sad, we have hope. Jesus is
[2:17] Speaker 1: defeating death, Satan, sadness, and sin for good. He's finishing
[2:22] Speaker 1: the task he was sent to do, and his deep,
[2:25] Speaker 1: forever love for us is holding him to that cross.
[2:29] Speaker 1: Listen in.
[2:32] Speaker 2: The soldiers took Jesus and prepared him to be crucified.
[2:37] Speaker 2: Carrying his own cross, Jesus went out to a place
[2:41] Speaker 2: called the Place of the Skull. After a while, Jesus
[2:45] Speaker 2: could not carry his cross. So a man named Simon
[2:49] Speaker 2: had been told by the Roman soldiers... to carry Jesus'
[2:52] Speaker 2: cross behind him. There was a crowd that formed, and
[2:56] Speaker 2: a woman began to cry out for Jesus. The Lord
[2:59] Speaker 2: reassured her that everything was going to be all right,
[3:03] Speaker 2: and instead of crying for me, cry for yourself and
[3:07] Speaker 2: your children. Then, at the place of the skull, soldiers
[3:12] Speaker 2: crucified him there along with two criminals, one on each
[3:17] Speaker 2: side of Jesus. The crowd was mocking him, Jesus prayed, Father,
[3:24] Speaker 2: forgive them. They do not know what they are doing.
[3:27] Speaker 2: The soldiers took his clothes and divided it up between
[3:31] Speaker 2: them by casting lots, which fulfilled the prophecy that said
[3:34] Speaker 2: they would do so. The only thing that they left
[3:38] Speaker 2: Jesus with was his underwear. Pilate had a sign made
[3:41] Speaker 2: in Aramaic, Latin, and Greek, so that all the people
[3:45] Speaker 2: can read it walking by, which says, Jesus, the King
[3:50] Speaker 2: of Jews. A high priest argued with Pilate about not
[3:55] Speaker 2: writing that he is the king of Jews because he
[3:58] Speaker 2: has only claimed to be the king of Jews. Pilate
[4:02] Speaker 2: then simply stated that what he wrote is final. The
[4:07] Speaker 2: people nearby were taunting Jesus, saying that if he was
[4:10] Speaker 2: God's son, then he should be able to get himself
[4:13] Speaker 2: down from the cross. One criminal said the same things
[4:16] Speaker 2: as the crowd, but the other criminal turned to Jesus
[4:20] Speaker 2: and said to remember him. and Jesus said that he
[4:24] Speaker 2: will be joined with him in heaven. Near the cross
[4:27] Speaker 2: were his mother, his aunt, Mary Magdalene, and Mary, the
[4:32] Speaker 2: wife of Clopas. Jesus told his mother that John would
[4:37] Speaker 2: be his mother's son, and from there on out, that.
[4:40] Speaker 3: Is how it was.
[4:42] Speaker 2: Then there was darkness all around, and at the ninth hour,
[4:47] Speaker 2: Jesus cried out to the Father, saying, My God, My God,
[4:52] Speaker 2: why have you forsaken me? Many people there thought that
[4:56] Speaker 2: he was crying out to Elijah, so they immediately tried
[4:59] Speaker 2: to give him some wine to drink. They soaked a
[5:02] Speaker 2: sponge with sour wine, and when he had gotten the drink,
[5:06] Speaker 2: another person said for them to wait to see if
[5:09] Speaker 2: Elijah would come to rescue him. Then Jesus yelled out
[5:14] Speaker 2: one more time, Father, I give you my life.
[5:19] Speaker 3: It is now finished.
[5:22] Speaker 2: Then he gave his spirit to the Lord and passed away.
[5:27] Speaker 2: When this happened, the curtain in the temple was torn
[5:31] Speaker 2: in half. The earth began to shake. Rocks were split
[5:35] Speaker 2: in two. Tomb doors opened up, and some of the
[5:38] Speaker 2: saints that were dead were raised to life. The Roman
[5:41] Speaker 2: army commander saw these things happen, and he cried out
[5:45] Speaker 2: that Jesus was truly the.
[5:47] Speaker 3: Son of God.
[5:49] Speaker 2: There were three women present as well, who ministered to
[5:53] Speaker 2: Jesus in his last day. Since the Jewish leaders did
[5:57] Speaker 2: not want the bodies to be left up during the Sabbath,
[6:01] Speaker 2: they asked Pilate to let the bodies be taken down.
[6:04] Speaker 2: They took the criminals down, broke their legs, and then
[6:08] Speaker 2: moved on to Jesus. It was obvious that he was dead,
[6:13] Speaker 2: so they instead pierced him with a spear, and blood
[6:16] Speaker 2: and water came out of his body. This fulfilled the
[6:21] Speaker 2: scripture that Jesus' bones would not be broken, and another
[6:25] Speaker 2: scripture states that his body will be pierced.
[6:29] Speaker 4: Joseph was a follower of Jesus and asked Pilate for
[6:34] Speaker 4: his body. He feared the Jewish leaders, so when Pilate agreed,
[6:39] Speaker 4: he took the body quickly. Nicodemus brought myrrh and aloes,
[6:44] Speaker 4: and they wrapped his body with these elements and linen.
[6:47] Speaker 4: They then placed Jesus in a new tomb that no
[6:51] Speaker 4: one had ever been in near a garden.
[6:54] Speaker 2: This was the day of preparation. And because the tomb
[6:58] Speaker 2: was close, they placed Jesus there.
[7:07] Speaker 1: All we can say is thank you, Lord. Our story
[7:10] Speaker 1: opens with the Roman soldiers taking Jesus away to be crucified. Now,
[7:15] Speaker 1: we've talked about this word a lot lately, crucifixion. But
[7:20] Speaker 1: what does it really mean? This was a form of
[7:24] Speaker 1: punishment for criminals on that day. If you committed a
[7:28] Speaker 1: bad enough crime, you were sentenced to death. You would
[7:32] Speaker 1: be forced to carry a long, heavy wooden beam to
[7:35] Speaker 1: the place of your death. That beam would eventually be
[7:39] Speaker 1: attached to a longer one that was stuck into the ground.
[7:43] Speaker 2: There, you would hang.
[7:45] Speaker 1: In front of the whole town with your name and
[7:47] Speaker 1: the crime on a sign above your head. Eventually, you
[7:51] Speaker 1: would no longer be able to breathe. In today's story,
[7:56] Speaker 1: we hear that Jesus was having a hard time carrying
[7:59] Speaker 1: his cross beam. Surely by now, he had been beaten
[8:03] Speaker 1: so badly that it was hard to walk, let alone
[8:06] Speaker 1: carry something that heavy. A man named Simon walked behind
[8:11] Speaker 1: Jesus carrying his cross for him. We also heard of
[8:15] Speaker 1: a woman crying out and Jesus comforting her. Even in
[8:19] Speaker 1: those terrible moments, he was thinking of others and healing
[8:23] Speaker 1: their pain. The Bible tells us that two criminals were
[8:27] Speaker 1: crucified next to Jesus. One of them clearly believed in
[8:31] Speaker 1: him and he said, Remember me when you enter into
[8:34] Speaker 1: your kingdom. What Jesus says to this criminal is so important.
[8:38] Speaker 1: He says, Surely I tell you today. This means that
[8:46] Speaker 1: even though this man had probably lived a very sinful
[8:49] Speaker 1: life and done very bad things, even though he had
[8:53] Speaker 1: never followed or believed in Jesus until these final moments
[8:57] Speaker 1: of his life, Jesus heard his cry and forgave him.
[9:03] Speaker 1: While we were on earth, it is never too late
[9:06] Speaker 1: to turn to Jesus. At the cross, we see many
[9:10] Speaker 1: Old Testament prophecies coming true. Prophecies about the soldiers casting
[9:15] Speaker 1: lots for his clothing and others about his unbroken bones
[9:20] Speaker 1: and his pierced side. Jesus was making true every word
[9:25] Speaker 1: of God all the way back to Genesis. And again,
[9:30] Speaker 1: as the people laughed at him and yelled mean things
[9:33] Speaker 1: to him, he loved them to the end. He asked
[9:37] Speaker 1: his father to forgive them because they did not know
[9:39] Speaker 1: what they were doing. I love how scripture describes the
[9:43] Speaker 1: woman at the cross. They loved Jesus and ministered to
[9:47] Speaker 1: him in those final hours. Jesus told John to take
[9:51] Speaker 1: care of his mother. Oh, how painful this must have
[9:54] Speaker 1: been for Mary. I wonder if she was thinking back
[9:58] Speaker 1: to years earlier as a young woman. teenage girl an
[10:01] Speaker 1: angel appeared to her did she remember his birth was
[10:05] Speaker 1: a miracle from God I wonder if she had thought
[10:09] Speaker 1: about the words of Jesus when he.
[10:10] Speaker 2: Was just 12 years old.
[10:12] Speaker 1: And she thought he had gotten lost why were you
[10:16] Speaker 1: looking for me Didn't you know that I must be
[10:18] Speaker 1: in my father's house? The Bible tells us she had
[10:22] Speaker 1: held all those times close to her heart. I'm sure
[10:26] Speaker 1: they rushed through her mind in these painful moments of
[10:28] Speaker 1: his death. Then there were the disciples. Perhaps they were
[10:33] Speaker 1: replaying the words from Jesus just hours before in their minds.
[10:39] Speaker 1: This is my commandment that you love one another even
[10:42] Speaker 1: as I have loved you. Greater love has no one
[10:46] Speaker 1: than this, that someone laid down his life for his friends.
[10:50] Speaker 1: I have to wonder if all of this was starting
[10:53] Speaker 1: to make sense. Everything he told them that was coming,
[10:56] Speaker 1: everything he predicted.
[10:58] Speaker 2: That would happen.
[10:59] Speaker 1: As Jesus suffered, they must have felt so very helpless
[11:04] Speaker 1: and sad. As Jesus cried out and gave up his spirit,
[11:09] Speaker 1: the earth shook. The rock split and the curtain in
[11:12] Speaker 1: the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
[11:17] Speaker 1: This is such an important part of this passage. If
[11:21] Speaker 1: you remember, when they built the temple, there was a
[11:24] Speaker 1: curtain that separated sinful people from a holy God. The
[11:29] Speaker 1: only person allowed beyond the curtain into the holy place
[11:33] Speaker 1: was the high priest. By tearing the curtain, God was saying,
[11:37] Speaker 1: no longer do you need a priest.
[11:39] Speaker 2: To get to me.
[11:41] Speaker 1: Jesus has made everything new. He has paid the debt
[11:45] Speaker 1: for your sin. Today's story ends with Joseph, a follower
[11:50] Speaker 1: of Jesus and his friend Nicodemus, gently taking Jesus' body
[11:55] Speaker 1: to a nearby tomb. They were all in shock.
[12:00] Speaker 2: How could it be over?
[12:01] Speaker 1: What they didn't know was that in three days, Jesus
[12:05] Speaker 1: would be alive. Alive in Galilee and alive in their hearts.
[12:11] Speaker 1: Thanks for listening to the greatest story ever told. The
[12:15] Speaker 1: story that changed everything and.
