[1:24] Speaker 3: Paul's first letter to the church in Corinth. In our
[1:28] Speaker 3: last story, Paul stayed in Ephesus and gave the Holy
[1:32] Speaker 3: Spirit to followers there, and then Demetrius the silversmith caused
[1:37] Speaker 3: a riot. In this story, Paul writes to the church
[1:41] Speaker 3: at Corinth to encourage them, and this is the first
[1:45] Speaker 3: part of the letter he wrote to them, as inspired
[1:49] Speaker 3: by 1 Corinthians.
[1:55] Speaker 1: Hi again, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress
[1:58] Speaker 1: Sadler with the Kids Bible in a Year podcast. I
[2:02] Speaker 1: am so excited you're here with me. Today, we're gonna
[2:05] Speaker 1: hear about what Paul says to his friends in Corinth
[2:08] Speaker 1: about fighting over who they think is best.
[2:12] Speaker 3: Let's dive in. I, Paul, have been asked by God
[2:18] Speaker 3: to be a messenger of his son, Jesus. I write
[2:22] Speaker 3: to the people in the church in the city of
[2:24] Speaker 3: Corinth All of us who call upon the name of
[2:28] Speaker 3: Jesus are of the same family. I send my love
[2:32] Speaker 3: to you from God. I am thankful for you all
[2:36] Speaker 3: because you have received the grace of Jesus. He has
[2:39] Speaker 3: given you great wisdom and shown himself to be real
[2:43] Speaker 3: to you. You have all that you need and Jesus
[2:46] Speaker 3: will help you until he returns.
[2:49] Speaker 4: God never fails us.
[2:52] Speaker 3: I ask that you would not fight with each other
[2:55] Speaker 3: I have heard that you have been fighting over which
[2:58] Speaker 3: person you should follow, but you should be one family.
[3:02] Speaker 3: I am sent by God to tell you good news,
[3:05] Speaker 3: not my own words. If you believe in God, you
[3:08] Speaker 3: will understand what the cross of Jesus means. The cross
[3:12] Speaker 3: of Jesus does not seem smart to many people, but
[3:16] Speaker 3: it is the power and wisdom of God. The wisdom
[3:19] Speaker 3: and power of people cannot compare with the wisdom and
[3:23] Speaker 3: power of God. We are not all wise and.
[3:26] Speaker 4: Powerful, but God chooses to use us to show his power.
[3:31] Speaker 3: We cannot be proud of our own wisdom and power
[3:34] Speaker 3: because it only comes from God. I do not try
[3:37] Speaker 3: to show off, but I only want to tell you
[3:40] Speaker 3: about the story of Jesus.
[3:42] Speaker 4: It is not my wisdom which is important, but the
[3:45] Speaker 4: power of God.
[3:48] Speaker 3: Those of us who are older than you hope to
[3:51] Speaker 3: show you the wisdom of God. Those who put Jesus
[3:54] Speaker 3: to death did not understand the wisdom of God. The
[3:58] Speaker 3: Spirit of God reveals His wisdom. We must have the
[4:01] Speaker 3: Spirit of God inside of us, leading us and showing
[4:05] Speaker 3: us truth. If you do not believe in God, you
[4:08] Speaker 3: cannot understand the Spirit of God. We must think as
[4:13] Speaker 3: Jesus would think.
[4:15] Speaker 4: I had to speak to.
[4:16] Speaker 3: You like babies because you were not ready to act
[4:19] Speaker 3: like adults. You are still not ready because you are
[4:23] Speaker 3: still fighting. We work together to build God's kingdom on earth,
[4:27] Speaker 3: but only God is the one who makes the kingdom grow.
[4:31] Speaker 3: Only God can get the credit for making his kingdom grow.
[4:35] Speaker 3: We are working together to help build God's kingdom. I
[4:40] Speaker 3: have started to help you all in your relationship with God,
[4:43] Speaker 3: but you must allow others to continue to help you.
[4:48] Speaker 3: Jesus must be the center of your life. If you
[4:51] Speaker 3: keep Jesus at the center of your life, You will
[4:53] Speaker 3: be strong even when times are tough.
[4:56] Speaker 4: The Spirit of God lives inside of you.
[4:59] Speaker 3: God will punish anyone who tries to hurt you because
[5:03] Speaker 3: he lives inside of you. You are holy because God
[5:07] Speaker 3: is living in you. Anyone who trusts in their own
[5:10] Speaker 3: wisdom is actually unwise.
[5:13] Speaker 4: You belong to Jesus, and he belongs to God.
[5:17] Speaker 3: You should know that I am only a servant of God.
[5:21] Speaker 4: I must be faithful to God.
[5:23] Speaker 3: Do not judge yourself or others, for God will judge
[5:26] Speaker 3: all of us when he returns. Do you be proud,
[5:29] Speaker 3: for everything you have is from God. In God, you
[5:33] Speaker 3: have everything you need. People think we are foolish because
[5:37] Speaker 3: we follow God, but they do not understand. We are hungry, thirsty, tired,
[5:43] Speaker 3: and we have no home. And when we help people,
[5:45] Speaker 3: they help us in return. Do not be ashamed of this.
[5:50] Speaker 3: You have many people you can follow. but you should
[5:53] Speaker 3: follow me because I will teach you the ways of Jesus.
[5:57] Speaker 3: I will come and see you soon. Many people are proud,
[6:01] Speaker 3: but the true power is only found in God. I
[6:04] Speaker 3: have heard that a man in your church is behaving
[6:07] Speaker 3: badly with his father's wife. You have ignored this wrong behavior. Instead,
[6:13] Speaker 3: you must ask this man to leave. Even though I
[6:16] Speaker 3: am not there with all of you, I know that
[6:19] Speaker 3: this man is acting wrongly. When you gather together, You
[6:22] Speaker 3: must ask this man to leave hoping that one day
[6:25] Speaker 3: he will return and be saved. If you have a
[6:28] Speaker 3: little bit of evil among you, eventually it can spread
[6:32] Speaker 3: to the rest of the group.
[6:34] Speaker 4: Get rid of evil so you can be made new.
[6:37] Speaker 3: Jesus has died for our sins, and we must not
[6:41] Speaker 3: celebrate with evil but with truth. I am not asking
[6:45] Speaker 3: you to stay away from people who are far from God,
[6:48] Speaker 3: for you need to be a light to them. Instead,
[6:52] Speaker 3: I am asking you to stay away from people who
[6:55] Speaker 3: act like they love God but really love evil. If
[6:58] Speaker 3: you have a problem with someone in the church, you
[7:01] Speaker 3: should not take them to a judge and fight where
[7:04] Speaker 3: everyone can see. We have much more important things to
[7:08] Speaker 3: take care of. Instead, you should take care of your
[7:12] Speaker 3: fights within the family of the church. Those who are
[7:15] Speaker 3: unholy will not be part of the kingdom of God.
[7:19] Speaker 3: Many of you used to be unholy, but Jesus has
[7:22] Speaker 3: made you holy and clean. There are many things I
[7:25] Speaker 3: can do, but not everything is good for me. You
[7:29] Speaker 3: were not created to do evil things, but to serve
[7:31] Speaker 3: the Lord. You must not be joined to sin, but
[7:34] Speaker 3: joined to God. Run from your sin, for it will
[7:38] Speaker 3: hurt your own body. Your body belongs to God, so
[7:42] Speaker 3: you must praise God with your body. Each man should
[7:47] Speaker 3: find a wife and each woman should find a husband,
[7:50] Speaker 3: for men and women desire to be with each other.
[7:54] Speaker 3: You should put the other first and meet all of
[7:57] Speaker 3: their needs. For those who are not married, it is
[8:00] Speaker 3: good for you to remain so, for I am also single.
[8:03] Speaker 3: But if you feel the need to get married, then
[8:06] Speaker 3: it is good to do so. To those who are married,
[8:10] Speaker 3: do not leave each other, but remain together. If your
[8:13] Speaker 3: husband or wife is not a believer, do not leave them.
[8:17] Speaker 4: They choose to leave you, be at peace.
[8:21] Speaker 3: Everyone should live the life that God tells them to live.
[8:24] Speaker 3: God wants you just as you are. He can use
[8:27] Speaker 3: you in any situation you are in. If you are married,
[8:31] Speaker 3: do not seek to leave your husband or wife. Being
[8:34] Speaker 3: married may be difficult, for things.
[8:36] Speaker 4: Are changing in the world.
[8:39] Speaker 3: I wish you would not be worried about the things
[8:41] Speaker 3: of this world, but about the things of God.
[8:44] Speaker 4: If you are married, Wow. Wow.
[9:13] Speaker 1: There was a lot of teaching from Paul today, wasn't it?
[9:18] Speaker 1: Let's dig in and see if we can discover how
[9:20] Speaker 1: a letter that Paul wrote hundreds of years ago can
[9:24] Speaker 1: make a difference in our lives today. Now, back in
[9:28] Speaker 1: Bible times, Corinth was a big, important city like New
[9:33] Speaker 1: York or Los Angeles. Paul lived here for about a
[9:38] Speaker 1: year and a half, making friends and telling them about Jesus.
[9:42] Speaker 1: Those friends worshipped God and learned about Jesus together, so
[9:46] Speaker 1: they became one of the very first churches, the Church
[9:50] Speaker 1: of Corinth. Later, Paul left Corinth to go to other
[9:54] Speaker 1: cities and start other churches, but he stayed in touch
[9:57] Speaker 1: with his friends in Corinth. And when they get confused
[10:00] Speaker 1: about what it means to follow Jesus, Paul wrote them
[10:03] Speaker 1: letters to help them get back on track. Now, it
[10:07] Speaker 1: might seem like Paul was talking about a lot of
[10:09] Speaker 1: different topics today, but there is actually one main idea
[10:13] Speaker 1: that runs all the way through the book of 1 Corinthians.
[10:17] Speaker 1: And that's the idea that following Jesus isn't just what
[10:20] Speaker 1: you do at a church or when you're with other Christians.
[10:24] Speaker 1: Following Jesus is something you do with every area of
[10:28] Speaker 1: your life. Every relationship, every decision, and every word you
[10:32] Speaker 1: say is part of building God's kingdom. God's truth touches everything.
[10:39] Speaker 1: For example, one reason Paul wrote this letter is because
[10:43] Speaker 1: other teachers had to come to Corinth. And even though
[10:47] Speaker 1: they were all preaching and teaching about Jesus, the Christians
[10:51] Speaker 1: had started fighting over which teacher was the best. Now,
[10:56] Speaker 1: this might seem silly to you. It seems silly to
[10:59] Speaker 1: Paul because the best teacher is obviously Jesus. But maybe
[11:03] Speaker 1: you and your friends like one sports team and a
[11:06] Speaker 1: different group of friends likes a different team and you
[11:09] Speaker 1: make fun of each other because of it. Maybe you
[11:12] Speaker 1: even fight about it. Or maybe you like one kind
[11:16] Speaker 1: of music or style of clothes and you don't want
[11:18] Speaker 1: to be around people who listen to a different kind
[11:21] Speaker 1: of music or wear a different style of clothes. You
[11:25] Speaker 1: might not think that sports teams, clothes, or music have
[11:28] Speaker 1: anything to do with following Jesus. But the way you
[11:32] Speaker 1: treat people who think differently than you do has everything
[11:36] Speaker 1: to do with Jesus. And while Paul writes that we
[11:39] Speaker 1: are to run from sin, we are also to run
[11:43] Speaker 1: toward other Christians. We are to love and look out
[11:47] Speaker 1: for one another. In fact, Paul says that we should
[11:51] Speaker 1: consider others better than ourselves. That doesn't mean that we
[11:55] Speaker 1: should mope around and say, Oh me, oh my, I'm
[11:59] Speaker 1: a terrible person and you're so much better than me. No. No.
[12:03] Speaker 1: But what it does mean that if supporting your team
[12:06] Speaker 1: means putting someone down or being mean to them, then
[12:10] Speaker 1: God wants you to choose a different way to support
[12:12] Speaker 1: your team. Because showing someone God's love is much more
[12:16] Speaker 1: important than making yourself look good or cheering on what
[12:20] Speaker 1: you think is best. Fighting over teachers in Corinth, like
[12:24] Speaker 1: fighting over teams or clothes or music today, causes damage
[12:29] Speaker 1: and a division. God wants his people to be unified today.
[12:33] Speaker 1: And on the same side, one team focused on one goal,
[12:37] Speaker 1: loving Jesus and helping other people love Jesus too. You
[12:42] Speaker 1: don't have to pick a different team. Just cheer for
[12:45] Speaker 1: them with the heart that loves everybody at the game
[12:49] Speaker 1: because that's what Jesus does. I am so happy you
[12:53] Speaker 1: joined me today. Come back next time to hear the
[12:56] Speaker 1: rest of Paul's letter to his friends in Corinth. Remember,
[12:59] Speaker 1: the Bible is the best story ever told. It's God's
[13:03] Speaker 1: story to you, and it's all true. Loved what you heard?
[13:07] Speaker 1: Pass on the joy to someone you love, and together
