Join Julia Jeffress Sadler as she takes us on an incredible adventure in Episode 170. Jesus told Peter to forgive others not just seven times, but seventy times seven, illustrating this with a story about a king and his servants. A servant who owed the king a huge amount was forgiven his debt when he begged for mercy. However, this servant then refused to forgive a small debt owed to him by another servant, which angered the king when he found out, leading him to punish the unforgiving servant. Jesus explained this shows how important it is to forgive others, just as God forgives us. [1:08] Speaker 3: Continue to forgive. In our last story, Jesus told the
[1:14] Speaker 3: story of the rich man and Lazarus. In this story,
[1:19] Speaker 3: we will learn about the importance of forgiveness and how
[1:23] Speaker 3: much to forgive, as inspired.
[1:27] Speaker 1: By the Gospels. Julianne Thompson here, guest hosting for Julia
[1:36] Speaker 1: Jeffress Sadler. I'm glad you're back for another story from
[1:40] Speaker 1: the Kids Bible in Ear podcast. Today, Jesus is telling
[1:44] Speaker 1: another parable, and this story is going to teach us
[1:47] Speaker 1: a lot about forgiveness. We're going to hear how a
[1:50] Speaker 1: servant learned a hard lesson. Listen close, and I'll meet
[1:54] Speaker 1: you on the other side.
[1:57] Speaker 3: Peter asked Jesus, If someone does something wrong to me,
[2:02] Speaker 3: How many times do I need to forgive them? Is
[2:05] Speaker 3: it seven times? Jesus said, You need to forgive them
[2:11] Speaker 3: seventy times seven. This is how it is in the
[2:15] Speaker 3: kingdom of God. Listen. There is a king who wanted
[2:20] Speaker 3: his servants to pay back all the money they owed him.
[2:24] Speaker 3: One servant owed the king one thousand bags of gold,
[2:28] Speaker 3: but he did not have that much. So, The king
[2:32] Speaker 3: said that his wife and children needed to be sold
[2:35] Speaker 3: so he could pay it back. The man cried, Please,
[2:40] Speaker 3: I beg you to give me more time. I will
[2:43] Speaker 3: pay you all that I owe. I just do not
[2:46] Speaker 3: have all of the money to pay you back at
[2:48] Speaker 3: this moment. The king felt bad and had pity towards
[2:53] Speaker 3: this servant, so he said that he didn't need to
[2:56] Speaker 3: pay him back anymore. He allowed the servant to leave.
[3:00] Speaker 3: and told him not to worry about paying it back.
[3:03] Speaker 3: The servant left and found a fellow servant who owed
[3:07] Speaker 3: him only 100 silver coins. He began to choke him
[3:12] Speaker 3: and demanded that he get his money. The servant fell
[3:16] Speaker 3: down and said, Please, let me have more time and
[3:20] Speaker 3: I will pay it back. The man refused and had
[3:23] Speaker 3: him thrown into prison until he could pay him back.
[3:27] Speaker 3: Other servants saw what had happened. and this made them
[3:31] Speaker 3: very mad. They went to the king and told him
[3:35] Speaker 3: everything they had just seen. The king had the servant
[3:39] Speaker 3: brought back in and said, You evil man! I let
[3:44] Speaker 3: you leave and not have to pay me because you
[3:47] Speaker 3: had cried out to me. Why didn't you show that
[3:50] Speaker 3: same kindness to your fellow servant? The king was mad
[3:55] Speaker 3: and had the man put in jail until he could
[3:58] Speaker 3: pay back all he owed. This is how God will
[4:02] Speaker 3: treat you if you do not forgive. That is why
[4:06] Speaker 3: you must forgive your brothers and sisters. God is always
[4:11] Speaker 3: willing to forgive us, so we must be willing to
[4:15] Speaker 3: forgive others at all times.
[4:23] Speaker 1: Well, it sounds like God's paying attention to how we
[4:26] Speaker 1: treat each other. We open today with a question from Peter.
[4:30] Speaker 1: He was never afraid to say or ask anything. Jesus,
[4:35] Speaker 1: how many times do I need to forgive someone who
[4:37] Speaker 1: does something to me?
[4:39] Speaker 3: Seven?
[4:40] Speaker 1: Many Jewish rabbis at the time said that you should
[4:43] Speaker 1: forgive someone three times, but no more than that. But
[4:48] Speaker 1: as he loved to do, Jesus surprised Peter with his
[4:51] Speaker 1: answer when he said, no, you should forgive 70 times seven. Now,
[4:57] Speaker 1: I don't think Jesus was expecting Peter to get out
[5:00] Speaker 1: his pencil and do a math problem. This was just
[5:03] Speaker 1: a way of telling Peter that you should keep on
[5:05] Speaker 1: forgiving and keep on forgiving and keep on forgiving. In
[5:10] Speaker 1: other words, as part of God's kingdom, we should always forgive.
[5:14] Speaker 1: Then we heard Jesus explain this lesson in a parable
[5:17] Speaker 1: about a master and his servant. The servant owed 1,000
[5:21] Speaker 1: bags of gold. which was basically worth millions of dollars.
[5:27] Speaker 1: Of course, this debt was way too big, and the
[5:30] Speaker 1: servant would never have enough money to pay back the master.
[5:34] Speaker 1: The master knew this, but instead of making him sell
[5:37] Speaker 1: his family and try to come up with all that money,
[5:41] Speaker 1: Jesus said the master felt bad for his servant and
[5:44] Speaker 1: had compassion on him. He forgave him and said, never mind,
[5:49] Speaker 1: you don't have to pay me back. Then we heard
[5:52] Speaker 1: how that same servant left and found someone who owed
[5:55] Speaker 1: him money. But it was a much smaller amount than
[5:58] Speaker 1: what he owed the master. The servant grabbed this person
[6:02] Speaker 1: by the throat as if he was going to choke
[6:04] Speaker 1: him and demanded that he pay back the money. But wait,
[6:08] Speaker 1: the servant had just been forgiven such a huge debt.
[6:13] Speaker 1: Why was he being so mean to someone who owed
[6:15] Speaker 1: him a smaller amount of money? Didn't he realize how
[6:19] Speaker 1: much he had been forgiven himself? Apparently not, because he
[6:24] Speaker 1: had the man thrown into prison. But guess who found
[6:27] Speaker 1: out about it? The master. And he was not happy.
[6:32] Speaker 1: He said, I forgave you, but you chose not to
[6:36] Speaker 1: forgive someone else. And because of that, you're going to
[6:39] Speaker 1: be punished. In the same way, God has forgiven us
[6:44] Speaker 1: so much. It's funny because many times we don't really
[6:48] Speaker 1: see our own sin. We ignore, forget, or make excuses
[6:53] Speaker 1: for the things we do that are wrong or disobedient
[6:56] Speaker 1: to God. But so often, just like the master did
[7:00] Speaker 1: with his servant, God sees us and knows that we
[7:03] Speaker 1: can never make up for all of our sin. We
[7:06] Speaker 1: could never pay back that huge debt. We would have
[7:10] Speaker 1: to be punished forever and ever and ever to make
[7:13] Speaker 1: up for the wrong things we do every day. Things
[7:16] Speaker 1: like lying, being unkind, being disrespectful, cheating, gossiping, and much more.
[7:26] Speaker 1: But that's why Jesus came. He came to pay that
[7:29] Speaker 1: punishment for us and wipe away all of our sins.
[7:33] Speaker 1: Isn't that the best news ever? So Jesus is saying,
[7:38] Speaker 1: if I am taking care of all of your sins,
[7:42] Speaker 1: showing you compassion and grace and giving you forgiveness... I
[7:46] Speaker 1: want you to forgive those who sin against you. Let's
[7:50] Speaker 1: all take some time today to think about someone who
[7:53] Speaker 1: we might need to forgive. Maybe someone did something unkind
[7:57] Speaker 1: to you and you don't even realize that you're still
[8:00] Speaker 1: really mad about it. You're angry and you don't want
[8:02] Speaker 1: to forgive that person for what they did. In these moments,
[8:06] Speaker 1: think about this story and this servant and with God's strength,
[8:10] Speaker 1: make a choice to forgive whoever hurt you. But I'm
[8:14] Speaker 1: not just talking about saying it. I'm talking about meaning
[8:17] Speaker 1: it from your heart. Then thank God in your heart
[8:21] Speaker 1: for the forgiveness he gives you so freely every day.
[8:25] Speaker 1: Thanks for listening. Jesus is going to tell us a
[8:28] Speaker 1: super important story next time about a man beaten up
[8:31] Speaker 1: on the side of the road and how he wants

[8:37] Speaker 1: hear about it. Here we go. The Bible is the
