[1:14] Speaker 2: In our last story, Naaman was healed of leprosy by
[1:18] Speaker 2: Elisha after washing in the Jordan River seven times. In
[1:23] Speaker 2: this story, Naaman responds by wanting to give a gift
[1:26] Speaker 2: to Elisha, And while Elisha does not accept it, his
[1:30] Speaker 2: servant Gehazi does, and Elisha is not pleased. As inspired
[1:36] Speaker 2: by 2 Kings.
[1:40] Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Joy Sabler here, and I'm glad you're back
[1:43] Speaker 1: for the Kids Bible in a Year podcast. Faith is
[1:48] Speaker 1: a word we hear often, but do we really know
[1:51] Speaker 1: what it is? And do we really have it? Let's
[1:55] Speaker 1: see what the Bible teaches us today about this word
[1:58] Speaker 1: and why it's so important. Listen close.
[2:05] Speaker 2: Naaman and his servant went back to the man of
[2:07] Speaker 2: God and told them, Now I know there is no
[2:11] Speaker 2: God except the one in Israel, so please accept this
[2:15] Speaker 2: gift from your servant. The prophet said, The Lord lives
[2:19] Speaker 2: and I serve him, so I will not accept the gift.
[2:23] Speaker 2: Naaman kept urging him, but he did not accept. Naaman
[2:26] Speaker 2: asked the prophet, Will you please give me some dirt
[2:30] Speaker 2: that two of my mules can carry? I will not
[2:33] Speaker 2: offer any offering to any other gods. I will only
[2:38] Speaker 2: offer sacrifices to the Lord. But please, let God pardon
[2:43] Speaker 2: me because my master worships in a false temple, and
[2:46] Speaker 2: when he goes, he needs my assistance, and so I
[2:49] Speaker 2: have to bow in that temple. Go in peace, said Elisha.
[2:55] Speaker 2: After Naaman had traveled, Gehazi, the servant of Elisha, who
[2:59] Speaker 2: was a man of God, said to himself, My master
[3:03] Speaker 2: was too easy on Naaman. By not accepting the gift
[3:06] Speaker 2: and as long as the Lord lives, I will run
[3:08] Speaker 2: after him and get something. Then Gehazi went to Naaman
[3:13] Speaker 2: and told him that his master had sent him and
[3:15] Speaker 2: told him to send silver and two sets of clothing
[3:18] Speaker 2: back for the two young men had come from the
[3:21] Speaker 2: hill country of Ephraim from the prophet. Naaman said, Take
[3:26] Speaker 2: two talents and two sets of clothing by all means.
[3:30] Speaker 2: Naaman tied up the silver and clothing and has two
[3:33] Speaker 2: of his servants go ahead of Gehazi. When Gehazi had
[3:37] Speaker 2: reached the hill, he took the silver and clothing and
[3:40] Speaker 2: put them away in the house and sent Naaman's two
[3:42] Speaker 2: servants back. When Gehazi stood before Elisha, his master, Elisha said,
[3:48] Speaker 2: Where have you been, Gehazi? And Gehazi replied, Your servant
[3:52] Speaker 2: did not go anywhere. Elisha knew that Gehazi had gone
[3:56] Speaker 2: and saw two men meet him down at the chariots.
[3:59] Speaker 2: So Elisha told Gehazi, Naaman's leprosy will cling to you
[4:04] Speaker 2: and your descendants forever. Then Gehazi left, and his skin
[4:09] Speaker 2: was full of leprosy.
[4:16] Speaker 1: Yikes! I guess you could say Jahazi learned his lesson.
[4:20] Speaker 1: And what a hard lesson it was. Let's unpack today's
[4:24] Speaker 1: story and see what God can teach us from his word. First,
[4:28] Speaker 1: we find Naaman finally recognizing God as the one true God.
[4:34] Speaker 1: His healing of leprosy was proof enough for him. But
[4:38] Speaker 1: do you think Naaman would still have believed in God
[4:41] Speaker 1: even if he had not healed him? Like Naaman, we
[4:46] Speaker 1: sometimes want to see a big miracle happen before we believe.
[4:50] Speaker 1: It's almost as if Elisha's words about God weren't enough.
[4:55] Speaker 1: It's almost as if Naaman needed proof. But do you
[4:59] Speaker 1: know what makes God so happy? It's when we believe
[5:03] Speaker 1: without a miracle. And do you know what that's called?
[5:08] Speaker 1: Believing in something you can't touch? Knowing something is real
[5:12] Speaker 1: without seeing it with your eyes? I bet you do.
[5:17] Speaker 1: It's called faith. Hebrews 11 1 says it this way.
[5:22] Speaker 1: Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for. The
[5:26] Speaker 1: proof of things not seen. Faith is believing in God
[5:31] Speaker 1: even though you can't hear, touch, or see him. It
[5:35] Speaker 1: means trusting him and believing that his word is true.
[5:40] Speaker 1: and that He is with you. It's standing on the
[5:43] Speaker 1: promises in His Word, knowing that He will do everything
[5:47] Speaker 1: He says He will. And when you have faith, you
[5:51] Speaker 1: have eternal life forever with God. We find that truth
[5:56] Speaker 1: in a very popular verse out of John 3.16. Do
[6:01] Speaker 1: you know what it says? For God so loved the
[6:05] Speaker 1: world that He gave us His one and only Son,
[6:09] Speaker 1: That whosoever believes in him should not perish but have
[6:15] Speaker 1: eternal life. And that's how God wants us to live.
[6:19] Speaker 1: He has given us his word and his promise. And
[6:23] Speaker 1: he has told us it's all true. Just believe in me. Alright,
[6:30] Speaker 1: next we heard how Naaman offered Elisha a gift. But
[6:34] Speaker 1: Elisha refused to accept it. Why do you think that is?
[6:39] Speaker 1: Maybe Elisha thought Naaman would need these gifts on his journey.
[6:44] Speaker 1: Or maybe it felt wrong taking credit for something that
[6:47] Speaker 1: God had done. Maybe he thought the best thing to
[6:51] Speaker 1: do was to make a sacrifice to God. But Gehazi
[6:55] Speaker 1: seemed shocked by the fact that Elisha did not want
[7:00] Speaker 1: a gift. Why would he do that? And that's when
[7:04] Speaker 1: Gehazi took matters into his own hands and chased after Naaman. Now,
[7:10] Speaker 1: I'm quite sure you remember what happens when we start
[7:14] Speaker 1: doing things our way instead of God's way. That's right.
[7:19] Speaker 1: You got it. It never works out well for us.
[7:23] Speaker 1: And in Jehazi's case, it would prove to be disastrous.
[7:28] Speaker 1: Naaman agreed to send gifts of silver and clothing back.
[7:32] Speaker 1: But when Elisha asked Jehazi where he had been, he
[7:35] Speaker 1: lied and said, I didn't go anywhere. As a result
[7:40] Speaker 1: of Jehazi's disobedience and dishonesty, Elisha told him that the
[7:45] Speaker 1: leprosy that was once on Naaman would now be on
[7:49] Speaker 1: him and his children. Ouch. Let's be sure we learn
[7:55] Speaker 1: this lesson from Jehazi today so we don't have to
[7:58] Speaker 1: learn it ourselves the hard way. God is full of
[8:02] Speaker 1: grace and mercy and love, but he also punishes sin.
[8:07] Speaker 1: There's an old saying that goes like this, be sure
[8:11] Speaker 1: your sin will find you out. That means that even
[8:16] Speaker 1: if you think something is hidden and no one will
[8:19] Speaker 1: ever know, sooner or later it will come out in
[8:22] Speaker 1: the open and no longer be hidden. And besides, nothing
[8:27] Speaker 1: is hidden from God who sees straight to the deepest
[8:30] Speaker 1: parts of our heart. So if you have something you
[8:33] Speaker 1: need to confess or make right with God today, now
[8:36] Speaker 1: is a great time to do that. God wants to
[8:39] Speaker 1: heal your heart and give you all of his forgiveness
[8:42] Speaker 1: and love. That's something we all need every single day.
[8:47] Speaker 1: Thanks for listening to today's story about Naaman and Jehazi.
[8:51] Speaker 1: I hope you'll come back next time to hear about
[8:54] Speaker 1: some invisible horses and chariots and what God tells us
[8:58] Speaker 1: to do about the people who just don't like us.
[9:02] Speaker 1: So don't miss it. Let's say it together. The Bible
[9:06] Speaker 1: is the best story ever told. It's God's story to you.
