[1:11] Speaker 4: Jesus calms the storm. In our last story, Jesus continued
[1:17] Speaker 4: to tell short stories or parables about the kingdom of
[1:20] Speaker 4: God and our need to listen. In this story, we
[1:25] Speaker 4: will learn about Jesus calming the storms and helping a
[1:29] Speaker 4: demon-possessed man become free, as inspired by the Gospels.
[1:38] Speaker 2: Hi again, friends.
[1:39] Speaker 1: It's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress Sadler. I
[1:44] Speaker 1: am so glad you're back for another story from the
[1:47] Speaker 1: Kids Bible in Ear podcast. The thunder is roaring, the
[1:51] Speaker 1: wind is howling, the disciples are crying out in fear,
[1:54] Speaker 1: and Jesus is.
[1:54] Speaker 4: asleep?
[1:57] Speaker 1: Today's story is all about storms, bad things that happen
[2:01] Speaker 1: to us, and how we can trust Jesus in the
[2:04] Speaker 1: middle of them. So, let's listen up.
[2:09] Speaker 4: Jesus took his disciples across the lake. While they were
[2:13] Speaker 4: in the boat, a very strong wind came up on
[2:16] Speaker 4: the lake. The waves started to come over the sides
[2:19] Speaker 4: and into the boat. It was almost full of water.
[2:24] Speaker 4: Jesus was at.
[2:24] Speaker 2: The back of the boat, sleeping.
[2:27] Speaker 4: The followers panicked, went to him and woke him up
[2:30] Speaker 4: and said, Teacher, we are going to drown. Jesus stood
[2:35] Speaker 4: up and said, Quiet, be still, and commanded the wind
[2:40] Speaker 4: and the waves to stop. Then the lake became calm
[2:44] Speaker 4: and Jesus said to his followers, Why are you so afraid?
[2:49] Speaker 4: Why is your faith so small? The disciples asked each other.
[2:55] Speaker 3: Who is this?
[2:56] Speaker 4: Even the wind and the waves obey him. When Jesus
[3:00] Speaker 4: and his followers arrived on the other side of the
[3:02] Speaker 4: lake in the region of the Gerasenes, Jesus got out
[3:06] Speaker 4: of the boat and a crazy man came to him
[3:09] Speaker 4: from the caves. This man had an evil spirit living
[3:12] Speaker 4: in him and no one was able to tie him
[3:15] Speaker 4: up properly because he always.
[3:17] Speaker 3: Broke the chains off.
[3:19] Speaker 4: Every day he would wander around screaming and cutting himself
[3:22] Speaker 4: with stones. He ran to Jesus and knelt down before
[3:26] Speaker 4: him And Jesus said, You, evil spirit, come out of
[3:30] Speaker 4: that man.
[3:31] Speaker 3: The man shrieked in a loud voice.
[3:34] Speaker 4: What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the
[3:38] Speaker 4: Most High God? Do not punish me. Jesus said, What
[3:43] Speaker 4: is your name? The man answered, My name is Legion,
[3:49] Speaker 4: because I have many spirits in me. The man begged
[3:54] Speaker 4: Jesus again and again, not to send the spirits out
[3:58] Speaker 4: of that area. There happened to be a large herd
[4:01] Speaker 4: of pigs eating on a hillside. The evil spirits begged,
[4:06] Speaker 4: Send us to the pigs. Let us go into them.
[4:10] Speaker 4: Jesus allowed them to, and the evil spirits left the
[4:13] Speaker 4: man and went into the pigs. Immediately the herd of
[4:17] Speaker 4: pigs rushed down the hill into the lake and were drowned.
[4:21] Speaker 4: There were somewhere around 2,000 pigs in that herd. People
[4:27] Speaker 4: went out to see what had happened, and they saw
[4:30] Speaker 4: the man who had had the many evil spirits was
[4:33] Speaker 4: sitting there, clothed and in his right mind. The people
[4:37] Speaker 4: were frightened, and they began to beg Jesus to leave
[4:41] Speaker 4: the area. As Jesus was getting ready to go back
[4:44] Speaker 4: across the lake in the boat, the man who was
[4:46] Speaker 4: freed from the demons begged to go with him. Jesus said,' No,
[4:52] Speaker 4: instead go home to your family and friends.' Tell them
[4:56] Speaker 4: how much the Lord has done for you and how
[4:59] Speaker 4: he has had mercy on you. The man left and
[5:03] Speaker 4: told the people and the Decapolis about the great things
[5:07] Speaker 4: Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
[5:17] Speaker 1: Okay, can you even imagine the winds and the waves
[5:23] Speaker 1: obeying God's voice? Today's story is special and can teach
[5:28] Speaker 1: us so much about trusting Jesus. You see, the storm
[5:32] Speaker 1: in today's story can represent bad things in our lives.
[5:36] Speaker 1: Maybe we lose someone we love, get hurt, don't feel
[5:40] Speaker 1: like we have any friends, or are just really disappointed
[5:44] Speaker 1: about something. Storms or sad things come along for everyone,
[5:49] Speaker 1: and that is one thing that will never change while
[5:52] Speaker 1: we're here on this earth. We know Jesus is with us,
[5:57] Speaker 1: but we still get scared.
[5:59] Speaker 2: Why isn't he doing anything? When is he going to help?
[6:04] Speaker 1: Perhaps you're in a storm right now. Are you sad, mad,
[6:09] Speaker 1: or upset about something happening in your life? Do you
[6:13] Speaker 1: wish something was different? I believe God wants to speak.
[6:18] Speaker 2: To your heart today. Let's dive in.
[6:22] Speaker 1: Jesus finished teaching his parables and was already in the boat,
[6:25] Speaker 1: so he took his disciples across the sea.
[6:29] Speaker 2: The Bible says that a huge, giant wind came out
[6:33] Speaker 2: of nowhere.
[6:34] Speaker 1: The waves were so high, crashing against the boat and
[6:37] Speaker 1: filling it with water.
[6:39] Speaker 2: The disciples go scared.
[6:42] Speaker 1: And when I say scared, I mean S-C-A-R-E-D scared.
[6:47] Speaker 2: They were sure they were about to die. But where
[6:51] Speaker 2: was Jesus? Oh, he was asleep. Now, wait just a minute.
[6:57] Speaker 1: Does that come as a surprise to you? Well, let's
[7:01] Speaker 1: think about it. Jesus was fully God and fully man.
[7:06] Speaker 1: So as a man, he would probably at times feel exhausted.
[7:10] Speaker 1: He was getting up very early to pray and spending
[7:14] Speaker 1: all day traveling, teaching to thousands. healing sickness, and trying
[7:19] Speaker 1: to help others understand his message. Maybe he just really
[7:24] Speaker 1: needed a nap. Also, think about this. Jesus knew why
[7:28] Speaker 1: he was on earth and what was wrong. He knew
[7:32] Speaker 1: that God had a perfect plan, but it wasn't time yet.
[7:36] Speaker 1: So he knew he was not going to die that night.
[7:40] Speaker 1: He knew God had everything under control.
[7:44] Speaker 2: And when you trust God that much, You feel peace.
[7:49] Speaker 2: You can rest.
[7:50] Speaker 1: You can be still and know that he is in
[7:53] Speaker 1: control and everything is going to be okay. You can
[7:56] Speaker 1: even take a nice long nap. When the disciples found Jesus,
[8:01] Speaker 1: they were panicking. The Bible says that Jesus got up
[8:05] Speaker 1: and simply said these words.
[8:07] Speaker 2: Quiet, be still, to the waves. Let me say that again.
[8:13] Speaker 2: He told the wind and waves to be quiet and
[8:17] Speaker 2: calm down.
[8:18] Speaker 1: And do you know what else? They recognized his voice.
[8:23] Speaker 1: They knew that voice from the moment it spoke them
[8:25] Speaker 1: into existence. The moment of creation. He was their maker
[8:30] Speaker 1: and they did whatever he said. Now Jesus had a
[8:34] Speaker 1: question for his friends. Why is your faith so small?
[8:38] Speaker 2: He asked. Hadn't they seen him heal before?
[8:41] Speaker 1: Raise people from the dead, and turn water into wine?
[8:47] Speaker 2: Didn't they know.
[8:47] Speaker 1: He was powerful enough to save them? Why were they
[8:52] Speaker 1: so afraid? The same reason we sometimes are. We forget.
[8:59] Speaker 1: We forget that God sees us and that he allows
[9:01] Speaker 1: everything to happen for a reason. We forget that this
[9:05] Speaker 1: plan is always the best plan and nothing takes him
[9:08] Speaker 1: by surprise. We forget that sometimes he allows us to
[9:12] Speaker 1: go through hard times so he can teach us something
[9:16] Speaker 1: new about himself and make our faith stronger.
[9:20] Speaker 2: We just forget.
[9:22] Speaker 1: The friends of Jesus were amazed and couldn't believe their eyes.
[9:26] Speaker 1: They said, who is this that even the winds and
[9:30] Speaker 1: the waves obey him? Surely this night strengthened their faith
[9:35] Speaker 1: and helped them believe even more.
[9:38] Speaker 2: Because the road was.
[9:39] Speaker 1: About to get a lot harder for Jesus and his friends.
[9:44] Speaker 1: That's all for today. Next time we catch Jesus healing
[9:47] Speaker 1: on the Sabbath again.
[9:48] Speaker 2: Oh boy, I wonder what those Pharisees.
