[1:00] Speaker 3: Dear Galatia, In our last story, a council met to
[1:13] Speaker 3: discuss if Gentiles were required to be circumcised.
[1:16] Speaker 4: To be saved. The decision was no. Meanwhile, Paul continues
[1:21] Speaker 4: to preach and to stay in touch with churches. In
[1:24] Speaker 4: this story, the following is a summary of a letter
[1:27] Speaker 4: from Paul to the churches in Galatia so that they
[1:31] Speaker 4: may understand their freedom in Christ and how to live
[1:35] Speaker 4: by the Spirit and not by the law, as inspired
[1:39] Speaker 4: by Galatians.
[1:43] Speaker 1: Hey everyone, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress Sadler,
[1:47] Speaker 1: here to welcome you back to the Kids Bible in
[1:49] Speaker 1: Ear podcast.
[1:51] Speaker 2: Today we are going to hear.
[1:53] Speaker 1: All about a letter that Paul wrote to some of
[1:55] Speaker 1: his churches and And we're even going to learn how
[1:58] Speaker 1: to make fruit.
[1:59] Speaker 4: Huh?
[2:00] Speaker 2: That's right. Listen close.
[2:05] Speaker 4: Dear churches in Galatia, I am confused that you have
[2:09] Speaker 4: abandoned God so quickly when you know that there is
[2:12] Speaker 4: no other gospel than the gospel of Christ. So why
[2:16] Speaker 4: are you twisting it? Whose approval are you seeking, man's
[2:20] Speaker 4: or God's? You cannot please both God and man. For
[2:25] Speaker 4: if I kept trying to please people, I could no
[2:28] Speaker 4: longer call myself a servant of God. Friends, I do
[2:33] Speaker 4: not want you to think the words that I am
[2:35] Speaker 4: writing to you are from me, for the gospel does
[2:38] Speaker 4: not come from humans. What I am writing to you
[2:41] Speaker 4: now is from God, and it is in His power
[2:45] Speaker 4: that I write. You all know my testimony. The man
[2:49] Speaker 4: I used to be, I slandered the church. I tried
[2:52] Speaker 4: too hard to pursue my father's traditions. That is until
[2:56] Speaker 4: God called me out of that and revealed himself to me.
[3:01] Speaker 4: He called me to preach to the Gentiles, so I
[3:05] Speaker 4: obeyed and traveled to many different places to preach the
[3:09] Speaker 4: good news to Gentiles. They sang praises to God for
[3:12] Speaker 4: the work that he had done through me. Fourteen years later,
[3:17] Speaker 4: I went back to Jerusalem with Barnabas and Titus. I
[3:21] Speaker 4: went and preached to the leaders and Gentiles in Jerusalem
[3:26] Speaker 4: I did not want to live my life in vain,
[3:29] Speaker 4: so I continued to wholeheartedly pursue the Lord and His
[3:33] Speaker 4: plan for me. God continued to work through me in Jerusalem,
[3:38] Speaker 4: even though there was some against me. A man named
[3:41] Speaker 4: Peter came to where I was in Antioch, and I
[3:44] Speaker 4: confronted him to his face. I confronted him because he
[3:48] Speaker 4: had been leading other Jews astray and was hanging out
[3:51] Speaker 4: with the Gentiles more than he should have. I said
[3:55] Speaker 4: to him in front of his friends, How can you
[3:57] Speaker 4: call yourself a Jew when you walk around living like
[4:01] Speaker 4: a Gentile but expecting other Gentiles to follow Jewish law
[4:05] Speaker 4: and customs? As Jews, we are to die to the
[4:09] Speaker 4: law and live for God. We are to be put
[4:13] Speaker 4: to death to ourselves just as he was crucified for
[4:16] Speaker 4: our sins. If we do not do this, then Christ's
[4:20] Speaker 4: death would be in vain. You foolish people! What spirit
[4:24] Speaker 4: has possessed you? You saw our Lord killed, but you
[4:28] Speaker 4: have not experienced the spirit? Your walk began with the spirit,
[4:33] Speaker 4: and now you're trying to take matters into your own hands.
[4:37] Speaker 4: Does God perform miracles by your good works or by
[4:40] Speaker 4: belief in his word? Understand what I am saying to you.
[4:44] Speaker 4: You must have faith as Abraham did, and you will
[4:47] Speaker 4: not be cursed like the one who believes in justification
[4:51] Speaker 4: by works. Before we came to faith, we were held
[4:56] Speaker 4: captive by the law, and then faith unlocked our chains.
[5:01] Speaker 4: We are all God's children. There is no Jew, nor Gentile,
[5:05] Speaker 4: nor male, nor female. We are all one in Christ.
[5:10] Speaker 4: I am concerned that you have not been listening to
[5:13] Speaker 4: my words to you. Have I been doing all this
[5:16] Speaker 4: for you for nothing? I am begging you to follow
[5:20] Speaker 4: Christ just as I do, so that the gospel may
[5:23] Speaker 4: be preached to all the nations. Don't make this a
[5:27] Speaker 4: waste of time for me. Don't lose heart. Slavery is
[5:31] Speaker 4: no longer your home. You have been made free in
[5:34] Speaker 4: Christ Jesus so that you can go out and proclaim
[5:37] Speaker 4: his good news to the poor and broken. Though you
[5:41] Speaker 4: are free, do not take advantage of that freedom and
[5:44] Speaker 4: use it to please your flesh, but love others. For
[5:48] Speaker 4: a man reaps what he sows. So sow to please God,
[5:52] Speaker 4: not yourselves. This is how you live according to the Spirit.
[5:58] Speaker 4: So I tell you, live by following the Spirit. The
[6:02] Speaker 4: Spirit gives love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,
[6:08] Speaker 4: and self-control. My prayer is that the grace of the
[6:13] Speaker 4: Lord Jesus Christ will be with your spirit. Amen.
[6:24] Speaker 1: All right, let's unpack this letter. Paul wrote the book
[6:28] Speaker 1: of Galatians for the churches he visited, most likely on
[6:31] Speaker 1: his first missionary journey in the territory of Galatia. These
[6:36] Speaker 1: churches came about through the preaching and teaching of Paul.
[6:40] Speaker 1: But since then, some other Jewish leaders had come with
[6:44] Speaker 1: a different message, a message that just wasn't true. They
[6:49] Speaker 1: were telling the Gentiles in these churches that they had
[6:52] Speaker 1: to follow the laws of Moses in order to be saved.
[6:56] Speaker 1: This was upsetting to the Gentiles in the church. And
[7:00] Speaker 1: once Paul heard about it, he sat down to write
[7:03] Speaker 1: this letter. If this were to happen today, I wonder
[7:07] Speaker 1: if Paul would have jumped on a live stream to
[7:09] Speaker 1: set them straight. I guess in 48 AD, a letter
[7:13] Speaker 1: would have to do. Paul explained to these churches the
[7:16] Speaker 1: difference between living your life to make people happy and
[7:20] Speaker 1: living your life to make God happy.
[7:23] Speaker 2: He said you can't do both.
[7:25] Speaker 1: There will be times in your life when you do
[7:27] Speaker 1: something because it makes other people think you're great. People
[7:32] Speaker 1: give you awards, clap for you, and tell others what
[7:34] Speaker 1: a hero you are. Paul says that's not what we
[7:37] Speaker 1: should live for. Instead, our only focus should be to
[7:41] Speaker 1: please God. For the churches in Galatia, people were saying
[7:45] Speaker 1: the opposite of what God said was true. And the
[7:48] Speaker 1: Jews were tempted to believe people over God's word.
[7:52] Speaker 2: This is dangerous.
[7:54] Speaker 1: Always check what anyone tells you with what God's word says.
[7:59] Speaker 1: If it says something different, you know it's a false teaching.
[8:03] Speaker 1: Paul then explained how these Jews needed to die to
[8:07] Speaker 1: the law and live for God. That means that they
[8:11] Speaker 1: were not required by God to keep every law perfectly
[8:14] Speaker 1: anymore because Jesus had already saved them. They could go
[8:20] Speaker 1: on trying to do things on their own and simply
[8:22] Speaker 1: have faith in what Jesus did on the cross. Otherwise,
[8:25] Speaker 1: Paul said, why did Jesus die?
[8:28] Speaker 2: For nothing?
[8:30] Speaker 1: He died so we could be free from having to
[8:32] Speaker 1: do it all. He died so he could enjoy a
[8:36] Speaker 1: friendship with him and his free gift of heaven. Then
[8:40] Speaker 1: Paul went so far to say that we are not Jews, Gentiles,
[8:44] Speaker 1: males or females. We are all one in Christ Jesus.
[8:49] Speaker 1: We are all the same. In chapter 5 of Galatians,
[8:53] Speaker 1: Paul gives us some very important words in a passage
[8:56] Speaker 1: you may be familiar with.
[8:58] Speaker 2: He tells us what it.
[8:59] Speaker 1: Means to keep in step with the Spirit or walk
[9:02] Speaker 1: by the Spirit. Because you see, each and every day
[9:06] Speaker 1: when we get out of bed, we are tempted to
[9:08] Speaker 1: live in our strength. Or as Paul says, in our flesh.
[9:12] Speaker 1: Our flesh is just the earthly body that.
[9:14] Speaker 2: We live in.
[9:15] Speaker 1: The one that was born into sin. Our flesh is
[9:19] Speaker 1: the part of us that wants to be selfish, impatient, prideful,
[9:23] Speaker 1: and unforgiving. But because we have the actual living spirit
[9:26] Speaker 1: of God in us, we don't have to let our
[9:29] Speaker 1: flesh decide how we live. Instead, we can pray and
[9:33] Speaker 1: ask the Holy Spirit to come alive in us and
[9:35] Speaker 1: to help us.
[9:36] Speaker 2: Live in a way that pleases God.
[9:39] Speaker 1: In other words, the Holy Spirit lives our lives for us,
[9:44] Speaker 1: giving us the strength to make fruit. Now, of course,
[9:48] Speaker 1: we're not talking about apples or oranges or kiwis.
[9:52] Speaker 2: This fruit is much better.
[9:54] Speaker 1: Do you know what type of fruit or good things
[9:57] Speaker 1: the Spirit makes in us? We find it in Galatians 5.22.
[10:02] Speaker 1: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness,
[10:09] Speaker 1: and self-control. So next time you're having a hard time
[10:13] Speaker 1: loving someone or finding joy, being patient, kind, good, faithful,
[10:19] Speaker 1: or gentle, remember that you can't do it on your
[10:22] Speaker 1: own flesh.
[10:23] Speaker 2: You need Jesus.
[10:26] Speaker 1: Thanks for joining me today. Remember, the Holy Spirit is
[10:30] Speaker 1: in you and working through you. Tell him you need
[10:34] Speaker 1: him today and take my word for it. You definitely

[10:41] Speaker 1: are stuck in a dark, nasty prison. and they are singing?
