[1:12] Speaker 3: A beautiful transformation. In our last story, Jesus healed a
[1:18] Speaker 3: man who was blind from birth and was asked if
[1:22] Speaker 3: he wanted to know the Messiah. The man said yes,
[1:26] Speaker 3: and Jesus revealed himself to him. and he worshipped Jesus. Here,
[1:32] Speaker 3: we will learn the story about how Jesus reveals his
[1:35] Speaker 3: Messiahship to some of his disciples and transfigures before them,
[1:41] Speaker 3: as inspired by the Gospels.
[1:47] Speaker 1: Hi, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffer Sadler here.
[1:51] Speaker 1: Thanks for joining me for the Kids Bible in a
[1:53] Speaker 1: Year podcast. Peter, James, and John are about to see
[1:57] Speaker 1: something incredible. They'll never forget it. You want a hint?
[2:02] Speaker 1: They might need some sunglasses. Let's see what Jesus has
[2:07] Speaker 1: to tell us today.
[2:11] Speaker 3: As they came to Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asked the disciples,
[2:16] Speaker 3: Who do people say the Son of Man is? They answered,
[2:21] Speaker 3: John the Baptist. Some say Elijah. Others say Jeremiah or
[2:26] Speaker 3: some of the prophets. What do you think? Jesus asked.
[2:31] Speaker 3: Peter said, You are the Messiah. Jesus said, Peter, you
[2:37] Speaker 3: are blessed because this was revealed to you by my
[2:40] Speaker 3: Father in heaven. I will build my church on this
[2:44] Speaker 3: rock and the enemy will not overcome it. Then Jesus
[2:48] Speaker 3: told the disciples to not tell anyone that he was
[2:53] Speaker 3: the Messiah. A short time later, Jesus, Peter, James, and
[2:58] Speaker 3: John went up a mountain. Jesus began to transfigure, change
[3:04] Speaker 3: in form, before the three of them. All of a sudden, Jesus'
[3:09] Speaker 3: face began to shine, and He became very bright like
[3:13] Speaker 3: the sun. Then, next to Jesus, Moses and Elijah appeared.
[3:19] Speaker 3: They were standing and talking.
[3:21] Speaker 2: There with Jesus.
[3:23] Speaker 3: The three of them were talking about Jesus and what
[3:27] Speaker 3: was going to take place. They were mentioning how he
[3:30] Speaker 3: was going to bring fulfillment in Jerusalem. The disciples were
[3:34] Speaker 3: half asleep when this was taking place but woke up
[3:37] Speaker 3: right away when they realized what was going on. Peter said, Lord,
[3:43] Speaker 3: if you want me to, I can put up a
[3:45] Speaker 3: shelter for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.
[3:49] Speaker 3: While he was talking, a bright cloud came over and
[3:53] Speaker 3: covered them. They heard a voice say to them, This
[3:58] Speaker 3: is my Son, whom I love and am pleased with.
[4:03] Speaker 3: Listen to him. After hearing this, the disciples fell on
[4:08] Speaker 3: their face and were very scared. But Jesus said to them,
[4:13] Speaker 3: Stand up. Do not be afraid. When they stood up,
[4:18] Speaker 3: only Jesus was standing before them. Elijah and Moses were
[4:22] Speaker 3: no longer standing next to Jesus. As they left, Jesus
[4:27] Speaker 3: told them not to tell anyone what had just happened
[4:31] Speaker 3: until he was raised from the dead. They were confused
[4:35] Speaker 3: as to what he meant when he said he would
[4:37] Speaker 3: rise from the dead. The disciples asked, Why do teachers
[4:42] Speaker 3: of the law say that Elijah has to come first?
[4:46] Speaker 3: He said, Elijah came and restored. And they did not
[4:50] Speaker 3: recognize him. But they still did to him whatever they
[4:54] Speaker 3: wanted to. The Son of Man will also suffer at
[4:58] Speaker 3: their hands. The disciples knew that Jesus was talking about
[5:02] Speaker 3: John the Baptist. When they got to the bottom of
[5:06] Speaker 3: the mountain, a large crowd was waiting for them. The
[5:09] Speaker 3: people were arguing with the teachers of the law. As
[5:12] Speaker 3: soon as they saw Jesus, they all ran to him.
[5:16] Speaker 2: Why are you arguing?
[5:18] Speaker 3: Jesus asked. a man came to Jesus with his demon-possessed son.
[5:23] Speaker 3: He said to Jesus, The demon will not let him speak.
[5:27] Speaker 3: It makes him foam at the mouth and become very stiff.
[5:30] Speaker 3: None of your disciples were able to make the demon
[5:33] Speaker 3: leave my son. Jesus replied, Why do none of you believe?
[5:39] Speaker 3: Bring the boy to me. When the boy came near Jesus,
[5:44] Speaker 3: he started to roll around on the ground and foam
[5:47] Speaker 3: at the mouth. Jesus asked how long he had been
[5:51] Speaker 3: like this. The man answered, Since he was a little child.
[5:56] Speaker 3: It has made him throw himself into fire or water
[5:59] Speaker 3: trying to kill him. Please help us if you can.
[6:04] Speaker 3: Jesus said, If you believe, then it can be possible.
[6:09] Speaker 3: The man believed, and Jesus made the spirit come out
[6:14] Speaker 3: of the boy. Jesus could see that the crowd was
[6:17] Speaker 3: running over to see what was happening. He commanded the
[6:20] Speaker 3: demon to never enter the boy again. The demon left
[6:24] Speaker 3: the boy, and the boy looked like he was dead.
[6:28] Speaker 3: But Jesus took his hand and lifted him up. Jesus
[6:33] Speaker 3: left and went inside a house. The disciples later asked Jesus,
[6:38] Speaker 3: Why were we not able to cast the demon out
[6:41] Speaker 3: of the boy? Jesus said, This is something that can
[6:47] Speaker 3: only come from prayer.
[6:55] Speaker 1: What would it take for people to simply believe that
[6:57] Speaker 1: Jesus was who he said he was? Jesus asked his
[7:02] Speaker 1: friends a question as our story opens today. I think
[7:05] Speaker 1: it's interesting that he wanted to hear the thoughts of
[7:08] Speaker 1: his closest friends and followers. He knew that others thought
[7:12] Speaker 1: he might be John the Baptist. Elijah, Jeremiah, or someone else.
[7:17] Speaker 2: But who do you.
[7:18] Speaker 1: Think I am? He asked them. It's a question we
[7:22] Speaker 1: have to answer every day too. Who is Jesus to you?
[7:27] Speaker 1: Is he in charge of your life? Is he your friend,
[7:30] Speaker 1: your father? Is he just someone who lived a long
[7:33] Speaker 1: time ago? Is he the king of all kings and
[7:36] Speaker 1: the Lord of all lords? The way we live shows
[7:41] Speaker 1: others what we think of Jesus. when we choose to
[7:44] Speaker 1: follow him and love others the way he did. It
[7:48] Speaker 1: shows that we believe in who he is and what
[7:50] Speaker 1: he says. Okay, back to the disciples. These were his friends,
[7:56] Speaker 1: his family, and he cared deeply what they thought. He
[8:00] Speaker 1: wanted to hear from them. And as usual, Peter spoke first.
[8:05] Speaker 1: You are the Christ, the Messiah, the one we've been
[8:08] Speaker 1: waiting for, the Son of God. This was such a
[8:12] Speaker 1: big moment in the ministry of Jesus. In fact, it
[8:16] Speaker 1: was the very beginning of the church. Not the kind
[8:20] Speaker 1: of church you might be thinking of. A building where
[8:23] Speaker 1: we worship on Sundays. No, this was the beginning of
[8:28] Speaker 1: the church. The people of God who believe in Jesus
[8:32] Speaker 1: and trust in Him. This was actually the first time
[8:36] Speaker 1: the word church was used in the Bible. It comes
[8:39] Speaker 1: from a Greek word, ecclesia. which means called out ones.
[8:44] Speaker 1: Jesus was looking ahead to all of his followers who
[8:47] Speaker 1: would one day believe in him and make up his church.
[8:51] Speaker 1: He was telling them what was to come and showing
[8:54] Speaker 1: Peter that his answer to the big question was more
[8:57] Speaker 1: important than we could ever know. Jesus then said that
[9:02] Speaker 1: God the Father had shown this to Peter and that
[9:05] Speaker 1: he would build his church upon this truth in this moment.
[9:10] Speaker 1: Then He made a promise. It's a promise you and
[9:14] Speaker 1: I can hold on to every day as we live
[9:17] Speaker 1: in this crazy world. He said that our biggest enemy, Satan,
[9:22] Speaker 1: would never win against his church. Death, darkness, and sin
[9:28] Speaker 1: would be defeated for good. He promised to protect us
[9:32] Speaker 1: in the end. He promised that his church would live
[9:35] Speaker 1: on forever. Jesus then took his three closest friends up
[9:40] Speaker 1: on top of a mountain. The Bible tells us that
[9:44] Speaker 1: he began to transform. Something was happening to him. His
[9:49] Speaker 1: face was shining like the sun and his clothes were
[9:52] Speaker 1: very bright and white. Have you ever tried to stare
[9:56] Speaker 1: into the sun? You can't do it. It's too bright.
[10:00] Speaker 1: That's what happened to the face of Jesus. He was
[10:03] Speaker 1: reflecting the glory of God. And just when these three
[10:07] Speaker 1: men thought they had seen it all, there were Moses
[10:11] Speaker 1: and Elijah standing next to Jesus.
[10:13] Speaker 3: But hold on.
[10:15] Speaker 1: They had been dead for years and years and years.
[10:19] Speaker 1: Was this real? Some believe these two men were there
[10:23] Speaker 1: because Jesus was making everything from the Old Testament come true.
[10:28] Speaker 1: Moses represented the law and Elijah represented the prophets. Do
[10:33] Speaker 1: you remember hearing all the stories of the Old Testament?
[10:37] Speaker 1: The law was there to show us that we couldn't
[10:39] Speaker 1: be perfect and we needed someone to be perfect for
[10:43] Speaker 1: us and save us. The prophets were there to point
[10:48] Speaker 1: the way to Jesus and tell us that he was coming.
[10:51] Speaker 1: And here he was. When Peter, James, and John heard
[10:56] Speaker 1: the loud voice of God telling them that Jesus was
[10:59] Speaker 1: his son, they got so scared that they fell down. Jesus,
[11:05] Speaker 1: as he often did, told them not to be afraid.
[11:08] Speaker 1: And just like that, he was back to his normal self,
[11:11] Speaker 1: standing alone on the mountains. They came down only to
[11:15] Speaker 1: once again find people waiting on Jesus. He took care
[11:19] Speaker 1: of a young boy and told his followers again that
[11:22] Speaker 1: they just needed more faith. It wouldn't be long now.
[11:26] Speaker 1: God's great plan was about to come true. Thanks for
[11:30] Speaker 1: being here. Have you ever wondered what makes you great?
[11:34] Speaker 1: I hope you'll join me again next time to hear
[11:37] Speaker 1: what Jesus has to say about that. Okay, you know
[11:41] Speaker 1: what to say. The Bible is the best story ever told.
[11:45] Speaker 1: It's God's story to you. And it's all true. Found
