[1:20] Speaker 3: In our last story, Elisha sent a young prophet to
[1:24] Speaker 3: anoint Jihyo as king. Jehu immediately went out, driving his
[1:29] Speaker 3: chariot like a madman, and killed Joram and Ahaziah. In
[1:34] Speaker 3: this story, we learn about Joash and how he did
[1:38] Speaker 3: right in the eyes of the Lord, as inspired by
[1:42] Speaker 3: 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles.
[1:48] Speaker 1: Hi there, Julia Sadler back again with another story from
[1:52] Speaker 1: the Kids Bible in a Year podcast. being faithful in
[1:56] Speaker 1: the little things.
[1:57] Speaker 4: That's what we're.
[1:58] Speaker 1: Talking about today. Did you ever think you would learn
[2:02] Speaker 1: something so important from a seven-year-old king? Let's jump in
[2:08] Speaker 1: and see what this King Joash is all about.
[2:14] Speaker 3: When Joash became the king of Judah, he was seven
[2:18] Speaker 3: years old. Jehoiada, the high priest, taught the king and
[2:22] Speaker 3: guided him into living a life that was obedient to God.
[2:26] Speaker 3: For as long as Jehoiada lived, Joash was obedient to
[2:29] Speaker 3: the ways of the Lord. When Joash grew older, he
[2:33] Speaker 3: thought it would be a good idea to fix up
[2:35] Speaker 3: the temple of the Lord. Athaliah, Joash's grandmother, had taken
[2:40] Speaker 3: everything that had some value and used it to worship
[2:43] Speaker 3: Baal in her time as ruler. Joash decided to assign
[2:48] Speaker 3: priests and Levites to go throughout Judah and collect money
[2:53] Speaker 3: for temple repairs. Years before this, Moses had provided for
[2:57] Speaker 3: temple repairs by imposing a tax. When they started to
[3:01] Speaker 3: collect money for the repairs, they noticed that the repairs
[3:04] Speaker 3: weren't happening. Joash realized that the money was being put
[3:08] Speaker 3: into administration costs and for things that the priests thought
[3:12] Speaker 3: were important, not the temple repairs. Joash decided that the
[3:18] Speaker 3: priests and Levites were not fit to be in charge
[3:21] Speaker 3: of the temple repair. Joash decided to do something different.
[3:25] Speaker 3: He told his men to put a large offering box
[3:29] Speaker 3: at the temple gate. He told them that the people
[3:32] Speaker 3: were to bring their money for the temple repairs and
[3:34] Speaker 3: put it in the box. The people of Judah thought
[3:37] Speaker 3: this was a good idea, so they brought their offerings
[3:41] Speaker 3: and placed them in the box. When it was full,
[3:45] Speaker 3: the money in the box was given to the repairmen
[3:48] Speaker 3: This provided for the repairmen, allowing them to do their
[3:51] Speaker 3: job and do it well. They were all honest men,
[3:55] Speaker 3: and because of this, Joash didn't need them to tell
[3:59] Speaker 3: him how they were spending the money. Even after they
[4:02] Speaker 3: finished the repairs on the temple, the people of Judah
[4:05] Speaker 3: kept giving them money. The extra money was used to
[4:09] Speaker 3: make different tools of worship. The people of Judah started
[4:13] Speaker 3: coming to the temple of the Lord regularly to worship God.
[4:16] Speaker 3: Jehoiada was still alive while all this happened. When he
[4:20] Speaker 3: was 130 years old, he died, but he had lived
[4:25] Speaker 3: a good life. He served his king, his God, and
[4:30] Speaker 3: the people of Judah. After Jehoiada died, Joash met with
[4:35] Speaker 3: different leaders of Judah. They told him that they wanted
[4:38] Speaker 3: to take Judah in a different direction. Joash let them
[4:42] Speaker 3: make changes And as that happened, the people of Judah
[4:45] Speaker 3: stopped going to the temple to worship God. Instead of
[4:49] Speaker 3: worshiping God, they turned to false idols and goddesses. The
[4:55] Speaker 3: Lord sent prophets to warn the people of Judah. At
[4:59] Speaker 3: this time, the son of Jehoiada, Zechariah, was now a priest.
[5:04] Speaker 3: God told him to warn all the people of Judah.
[5:08] Speaker 3: So he did. So the son stood before them and said,
[5:12] Speaker 3: If you leave the Lord, the Lord will leave you.
[5:16] Speaker 3: The people of Judah were made upset by this statement,
[5:20] Speaker 3: and they wanted to kill the priest. Finally, Joash decided
[5:25] Speaker 3: that he would be stoned to death. He did this
[5:28] Speaker 3: despite knowing that the priest was Jehoiada's son. Jehoiada had
[5:33] Speaker 3: saved his life and helped him so much. God let
[5:38] Speaker 3: a small Syrian army defeat the superior army of Judah.
[5:42] Speaker 3: and conquer Jerusalem. Many of the Jewish leaders were killed.
[5:46] Speaker 3: Joash was severely injured, and the Syrians took everything they
[5:50] Speaker 3: could from Judah. When they left, some people went into
[5:54] Speaker 3: Joash's bedroom and killed him. Joash was king for 40 years.
[6:00] Speaker 3: The people refused to bury him by the other kings
[6:04] Speaker 3: because they had betrayed Jehoiada's sons.
[6:11] Speaker 1: Hold on.
[6:13] Speaker 4: Did we hear that right? A seven-year-old king? That's right.
[6:18] Speaker 4: Because when God.
[6:19] Speaker 1: Chooses to use someone, they might be two or they
[6:23] Speaker 1: might be 100. He always knows what he's doing. The
[6:28] Speaker 1: Bible tells us that little Joash was king for 40 years.
[6:33] Speaker 1: And overall, he did a great job following God. In
[6:37] Speaker 1: today's story alone, we see how he worked hard to
[6:42] Speaker 1: repair God's temple, treat people kindly, and did everything God
[6:47] Speaker 1: wanted him to do.
[6:49] Speaker 4: Well, almost everything.
[6:53] Speaker 1: Today's passage says that although Joash did what was right
[6:57] Speaker 1: in God's eyes, he failed to do one thing.
[7:01] Speaker 4: He did not remove.
[7:02] Speaker 1: The high places of idol worship. High places were shrines
[7:08] Speaker 1: or statues, dedicated to a particular god. Since these were
[7:13] Speaker 1: not real gods and they were instead idols made by people,
[7:17] Speaker 1: Joash should not have ignored this. Have you ever almost
[7:23] Speaker 1: or mostly obeyed something you were asked to do?
[7:28] Speaker 4: How did that go?
[7:30] Speaker 1: When God tells us to do or not do something,
[7:33] Speaker 1: he wants our total and complete obedience.
[7:37] Speaker 4: If you are just obeying.
[7:39] Speaker 1: A little bit of what you know to do, you're
[7:41] Speaker 1: not really obeying at all. You see, Joash lived with
[7:46] Speaker 1: a high priest named Jehoiada, and he was a wonderful teacher.
[7:51] Speaker 1: He showed Joash the ways of God and had a
[7:54] Speaker 1: lot to do with making him into a great king.
[7:58] Speaker 1: But some believe that after Jehoiada died, Joash stopped following
[8:03] Speaker 1: God and started doing things his own way. He even
[8:06] Speaker 1: allowed his people to worship false gods and idols. And
[8:11] Speaker 1: pretty soon, no one was coming to the temple to
[8:14] Speaker 1: worship God. Even after God sent prophets like Zechariah to
[8:19] Speaker 1: warn his people, they continued in their sin. So much
[8:23] Speaker 1: so that they even wanted to kill the very prophets
[8:26] Speaker 1: who were trying to save them. And things just kept
[8:30] Speaker 1: getting worse. When Hazael, king of Syria, threatened to attack Judah,
[8:36] Speaker 1: Joash offered him some of the special sacred items from
[8:40] Speaker 1: God's temple. Hello, Joash, what are you thinking? Giving God
[8:47] Speaker 1: special holy treasures to an evil king? Well, we can
[8:52] Speaker 1: give Joash a hard time all day long, but the
[8:55] Speaker 1: truth is, we're often just like him. Because Joash started
[9:00] Speaker 1: ignoring God's judgments, Little by little, for instance, by letting
[9:05] Speaker 1: God's people set up high places of idol worship, when
[9:10] Speaker 1: it came to the big things, it was pretty easy
[9:13] Speaker 1: to disobey.
[9:13] Speaker 3: This is why.
[9:15] Speaker 1: The little things are so important. What do we mean
[9:19] Speaker 1: by the little things? Here are some examples. Picking up
[9:23] Speaker 1: your trash. Telling the truth. When you sneak a cookie.
[9:29] Speaker 1: Giving someone a compliment or brushing your teeth right when
[9:32] Speaker 1: you're told to? Even though some of those things seem small,
[9:38] Speaker 1: the more we practice doing the right thing, the easier
[9:41] Speaker 1: it will be when big things come our way.
[9:44] Speaker 4: And they will.
[9:46] Speaker 1: In Matthew 25, Jesus tells the story of a master
[9:50] Speaker 1: who gives his servant five talents. The servant then makes
[9:55] Speaker 1: five more talents and brings it to his master. The
[9:58] Speaker 1: master then said, that because you have been faithful in
[10:02] Speaker 1: the little things i will now make you ruler over
[10:06] Speaker 1: great things it's a great reminder to be obedient and
[10:10] Speaker 1: all god tells us to do he might have a
[10:13] Speaker 1: pretty big job for you later in your life and
[10:16] Speaker 1: you want to be ready don't you Well, as today's
[10:20] Speaker 1: story ends, the Syrians have taken everything from Jerusalem and
[10:25] Speaker 1: Joash has died. I hope you'll come back next time
[10:28] Speaker 1: to hear all about his son, the next king. Do
[10:33] Speaker 1: you think he will be a king that follows God?
[10:36] Speaker 4: We'll find out soon. Thanks for listening today. And let's
