Join Julia Jeffress Sadler as she takes us on an incredible adventure in Episode 179. Jesus predicted that all His disciples would desert Him, specifically foretelling Peter's denial before the rooster crowed. At Gethsemane, Jesus prayed intensely, seeking His Father's will, while His disciples struggled to stay awake. When Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss, leading to Jesus' arrest, Peter impulsively cut off a servant's ear, which Jesus healed, emphasizing peace over violence. Despite Jesus' calm surrender, all His disciples fled as He was taken to face the high priests and teachers of the law. [0:00] Speaker 1: He said, Abba, Father, all things are possible to you.
[0:05] Speaker 1: Please remove this cup from me. However, not what I desire,
[0:09] Speaker 1: but what you desire. Mark 14, 36. Dear God, there
[0:15] Speaker 1: is no way for us to really understand how deeply
[0:20] Speaker 1: you love us. You showed us your love by choosing
[0:23] Speaker 1: to obey your Father, even when it felt like too
[0:26] Speaker 1: much to bear. Thank you for the example of obedience
[0:30] Speaker 1: and for loving your children, loving us to the end.
[0:34] Speaker 1: In Jesus' name, amen.
[0:39] Speaker 2: Thank you for praying with us today. The Kids Bible

[0:57] Speaker 2: be fulfilled. In our last story, we learned about the
[1:00] Speaker 2: Last Supper where Jesus identifies his betrayer as Judas. And
[1:02] Speaker 2: at the Passover meal.
[1:25] Speaker 3: He washed his disciples' feet and gave them a new
[1:28] Speaker 3: command to remember him when they take communion until he returns.
[1:33] Speaker 3: In this story, we will learn how Jesus will ask
[1:36] Speaker 3: his disciples to keep watch as he is in prayer
[1:39] Speaker 3: and agony in Gethsemane over what is to come, and
[1:43] Speaker 3: Judas will show up with a crowd to arrest Jesus.
[1:48] Speaker 3: As inspired by the Gospels.
[1:53] Speaker 1: Hi friends, welcome back. It's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for
[1:57] Speaker 1: Julia Jeffress Sadler, here with another story from the Kids
[2:01] Speaker 1: Bible in Ear podcast. In today's story, you're going to
[2:04] Speaker 1: see how Jesus was not only God, but he was
[2:08] Speaker 1: a man. He felt the things that we feel like
[2:12] Speaker 1: deep sadness, fear, and desperation. Whatever you're going through, he
[2:18] Speaker 1: knows how you feel. Let's see what happens as Jesus
[2:22] Speaker 1: cries out to his father, and is finally arrested in
[2:26] Speaker 1: the night.
[2:29] Speaker 3: At the Mount of Olives, Jesus spoke. He said, Peter
[2:34] Speaker 3: denied that he would never.
[2:35] Speaker 4: Do such a thing. Jesus prophesied, You, Peter.
[2:55] Speaker 3: Will claim not to know me three times before the
[2:58] Speaker 3: rooster crows. Peter continued to deny that he would disown Jesus,
[3:04] Speaker 3: not even if it meant him dying. All of the
[3:07] Speaker 3: disciples agreed with what Peter said too. The disciples and
[3:12] Speaker 3: Jesus went to a place called Gethsemane, where they were
[3:16] Speaker 3: told by Jesus to sit while he prayed. They were separated.
[3:20] Speaker 3: but he specifically took Peter and two of the sons
[3:24] Speaker 3: of Zebedee to go with him to pray. Jesus asked
[3:28] Speaker 3: them to stay to keep watch because Jesus had been
[3:31] Speaker 3: overwhelmed by sadness. Jesus cried out to his father, telling him,
[3:37] Speaker 3: If you can, please take this cup from me, but
[3:41] Speaker 3: ultimately let your will be done. God sent an angel
[3:47] Speaker 3: to encourage Jesus. And he continued to pray, though he
[3:51] Speaker 3: was very upset, to the point that he began to
[3:54] Speaker 3: sweat blood drops. He went to go check on the
[3:58] Speaker 3: disciples and found them all asleep and asked them why
[4:03] Speaker 3: they are asleep when they should be praying. He advised
[4:07] Speaker 3: them not to let the enemy tempt them. Then the
[4:11] Speaker 3: men that Judas had gathered together, including Pharisees, priests, and soldiers, arrived.
[4:18] Speaker 3: and they had their weapons out. Judas gave Jesus a kiss,
[4:23] Speaker 3: and Jesus asked why he would betray him with a kiss.
[4:27] Speaker 3: Jesus asked the crowd who they were looking for. They
[4:31] Speaker 3: explained that it was Jesus of Nazareth that they wanted.
[4:35] Speaker 3: And the Lord said, I am he. When they said this,
[4:42] Speaker 3: they all fell to the ground, and when Jesus asked
[4:45] Speaker 3: them again who they wanted, they repeated, Jesus of Nazareth.
[4:49] Speaker 3: The Lord told them, I said that I was the
[4:53] Speaker 3: one you were looking for, so let these other men go. Therefore, Jesus' words,
[4:59] Speaker 3: I have not lost any of the men you gave me,
[5:02] Speaker 3: was fulfilled. The disciples questioned Jesus if they should strike
[5:07] Speaker 3: with their swords, and Peter did not wait for the answer,
[5:10] Speaker 3: cutting off the ear of a servant. Do not bring
[5:14] Speaker 3: your sword out. Instead, put it away, said Jesus, for
[5:19] Speaker 3: those who use the sword will surely die by a sword.
[5:24] Speaker 3: I can easily call on my Father to bring me
[5:27] Speaker 3: twelve angels to take this burden away from me, but
[5:31] Speaker 3: this would not complete the things talked about in Scripture.
[5:36] Speaker 3: Do you think that I am starting a rebellion so
[5:39] Speaker 3: that you can come out with weapons trying to catch me?
[5:42] Speaker 3: You never tried to arrest me when I was praying
[5:45] Speaker 3: in the temple. But you question me now that prophecy
[5:49] Speaker 3: is coming to completion. Jesus stepped in and he went
[5:54] Speaker 3: to heal the servant's ear, mending it back together miraculously.
[6:00] Speaker 3: All of the disciples left him and Jesus was arrested.
[6:04] Speaker 3: taken to the high priest, and then the teachers of
[6:08] Speaker 3: the law gathered together.
[6:14] Speaker 1: Jesus is now in the hands of those who want
[6:17] Speaker 1: to kill him. Can you imagine how his disciples must
[6:21] Speaker 1: be feeling?
[6:23] Speaker 4: How are you.
[6:24] Speaker 1: Feeling about today's story? It's okay to feel scared or
[6:27] Speaker 1: sad for Jesus. We know how the story ends. But
[6:32] Speaker 1: sometimes it's good to feel a tiny bit of what
[6:35] Speaker 1: he may have been feeling in those moments. It helps
[6:38] Speaker 1: us understand how deep his love is for us. Just
[6:42] Speaker 1: before Jesus shared the Passover meal with his friends, John
[6:46] Speaker 1: says something very special in chapter 13. He says, Jesus,
[6:51] Speaker 1: knowing that this time had come, that he would depart
[6:54] Speaker 1: from his world to the Father, having loved his own,
[6:59] Speaker 1: He loved.
[7:03] Speaker 3: Us to the end.
[7:04] Speaker 1: In other words, things were about to get really bad.
[7:09] Speaker 1: Extreme suffering was just around the corner. But each step
[7:14] Speaker 1: of the way, Jesus chose to obey his Father and
[7:18] Speaker 1: stick with the plan no matter how much it hurt
[7:22] Speaker 1: or how sad he felt.
[7:24] Speaker 5: He loved us to the end.
[7:27] Speaker 1: And that means you. Today's story begins with Jesus telling
[7:31] Speaker 1: his disciples they were all going to leave him.
[7:35] Speaker 5: Never, they said.
[7:37] Speaker 3: But they would.
[7:38] Speaker 1: He tells Peter that before the rooster crows the next morning.
[7:42] Speaker 1: He will deny knowing Jesus three times. We then find Jesus, Peter, James,
[7:49] Speaker 1: and John in the Garden of Gethsemane. You can actually
[7:53] Speaker 1: visit what many believe to be this garden today. The
[7:58] Speaker 1: Bible says that as Jesus asked his friends to stay
[8:01] Speaker 1: awake and pray for him, he was overwhelmed and taken
[8:05] Speaker 1: over by such deep sadness. Why do you think that is?
[8:10] Speaker 1: For one, Jesus was God, so he knew what was coming.
[8:15] Speaker 1: He knew plan A. He would soon be arrested, accused, mocked.
[8:21] Speaker 1: beaten and killed on a cross, which happened to be
[8:25] Speaker 1: the most painful way to die. Since he was also
[8:29] Speaker 1: fully man, he would feel the extent of all that pain.
[8:34] Speaker 1: He would have to suffer through all of it. But
[8:37] Speaker 1: even more than that, I think Jesus was most sad
[8:41] Speaker 1: that all of the sins of the world were going
[8:44] Speaker 1: to be laid on him. That means that because he
[8:48] Speaker 1: was acting as a sacrifice for our sins, Every awful, terrible,
[8:53] Speaker 1: horrific thing that anyone has ever done, he would be
[8:58] Speaker 1: guilty of. The most terrible sin anyone has ever committed
[9:03] Speaker 1: would be on Jesus. And worst of all, because of
[9:07] Speaker 1: all the sin on him, he would be separated from
[9:10] Speaker 1: his father for the first and only time. It felt
[9:15] Speaker 1: like too much for this human body to handle. That's
[9:18] Speaker 1: probably why he prayed in that garden. Father, is there
[9:22] Speaker 1: any other way we can do this? Is there any
[9:24] Speaker 1: other way to pay the penalty of all these sins?
[9:28] Speaker 1: Is there any other way to get out of all
[9:30] Speaker 1: of the suffering and sadness? He knew there wasn't. This
[9:35] Speaker 1: was the only way. And in that moment, Jesus teaches
[9:40] Speaker 1: us the greatest lesson yet. He says, I am asking
[9:45] Speaker 1: you this, but really it's not what I want. It's
[9:48] Speaker 1: what you want. I choose to follow your plan. That's
[9:54] Speaker 1: a prayer we should pray every time we ask God
[9:56] Speaker 1: for something. Not because I want, Lord, but what you want.
[10:01] Speaker 1: Because your plan is always the best plan. Now, Jesus
[10:06] Speaker 1: was in such agony that the Bible says he was sweating.
[10:11] Speaker 5: Drops of blood.
[10:13] Speaker 1: Luke tells us that in these moments, an angel from
[10:17] Speaker 1: heaven came down to strengthen Jesus. I just love that
[10:22] Speaker 1: he told us that. Don't you wonder what that looked like?
[10:26] Speaker 1: It must have been such a tender moment. The Pharisees, priests,
[10:31] Speaker 1: and soldiers showed up with their weapons and Judas kissed
[10:35] Speaker 1: Jesus so they would know which man to arrest.
[10:39] Speaker 4: Talk about betrayal.
[10:40] Speaker 1: This was a friend that had walked through so much
[10:43] Speaker 1: with Jesus. But when you love money more than God,
[10:47] Speaker 1: you would do crazy things. Peter cuts off a soldier's
[10:51] Speaker 1: ear and Jesus says, no, put away your swords. That
[10:55] Speaker 1: is not how this is going to go. He heals
[10:58] Speaker 1: the high priest's servants and assures his friends that this
[11:02] Speaker 1: is the way it has to happen. And breaking their promises,
[11:06] Speaker 1: they never run away in fear, leaving him alone and deserted.
[11:11] Speaker 1: Today was a hard story to hear, but a very
[11:14] Speaker 1: important one Remember, whether it makes you happy or sad,
[11:20] Speaker 1: the Bible is the best story ever told. It's God's
[11:23] Speaker 1: story to you, and it's all true. Were you uplifted
