[1:25] Speaker 3: Paul, Silas, and Timothy under attack. In our last story,
[1:31] Speaker 3: Paul and Silas were beaten and arrested and thrown into
[1:34] Speaker 3: prison in Philippi. They prayed and sang hymns, and an
[1:39] Speaker 3: earthquake opened the prison doors, and they were released with
[1:43] Speaker 3: the help of a guard. In this story, Paul will
[1:46] Speaker 3: visit Thessalonica, Gerea, and in Athens will preach about the
[1:51] Speaker 3: unknown God, as inspired by Acts.
[1:58] Speaker 1: Hi again, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress
[2:02] Speaker 1: Sadler with the Kids Bible in Ear podcast. I am
[2:05] Speaker 1: so excited you're here with me. Today, we're gonna hear
[2:09] Speaker 1: about how Paul tells a lot of different people about
[2:12] Speaker 1: Jesus and how he changes the way he does it
[2:17] Speaker 1: so that everyone can easily understand and believe. It is
[2:21] Speaker 1: such a good story. So let's dive in.
[2:26] Speaker 3: Upon arriving to Thessalonica Paul and his friends went into
[2:31] Speaker 3: the Jewish temple. For three straight days, Paul tried to
[2:35] Speaker 3: convince the people that Jesus is the Messiah and that
[2:38] Speaker 3: he came, died, and rose from the grave. Some Jewish
[2:42] Speaker 3: people were convinced of this, and they joined Paul's group
[2:46] Speaker 3: along with many Greeks and women. There were some Jews
[2:50] Speaker 3: who grew jealous and began to rally together and riot
[2:53] Speaker 3: against Paul and Silas. They began to look in houses
[2:56] Speaker 3: for these men, including the house of a man named Jason.
[3:01] Speaker 3: They did not find Paul or Silas in this man's house,
[3:04] Speaker 3: so they drug him into the city in front of
[3:07] Speaker 3: the authorities. Paul and Silas have made too much trouble
[3:11] Speaker 3: in here, and this man has aided them. This man
[3:14] Speaker 3: is breaking the law and declaring Jesus as his king.
[3:18] Speaker 3: At this, the authorities were upset and made Jason pay
[3:21] Speaker 3: money and then let him leave. After this happened, Paul
[3:26] Speaker 3: and Silas went to the region called Berea and went
[3:29] Speaker 3: to another Jewish synagogue as they had done in Thessalonica.
[3:33] Speaker 3: The Jews there willingly and eagerly accepted the message Paul
[3:38] Speaker 3: and Silas preached to them. They took the message and
[3:41] Speaker 3: meditated on it, and a lot of them became believers.
[3:45] Speaker 3: The people of Thessalonica heard about these conversations and became
[3:49] Speaker 3: angry with Paul and Silas, so they came to Berea.
[3:52] Speaker 3: and started riots among some of the people. Paul, Silas,
[3:57] Speaker 3: and Timothy separated, Paul going to the coast, and Silas
[4:01] Speaker 3: and Timothy staying where they were. Later, Silas and Timothy
[4:05] Speaker 3: were instructed to go to Athens to meet Paul there.
[4:09] Speaker 1: Paul waited for Timothy.
[4:10] Speaker 3: And Silas in Athens, and while he was waiting, he
[4:13] Speaker 3: became disturbed. Because there were idols all over the city.
[4:18] Speaker 3: He went to the church authorities asking what had happened
[4:21] Speaker 3: and begging them to rid the city of idols. Some
[4:25] Speaker 3: philosophers asked why Paul was asking such a thing of
[4:28] Speaker 3: these people.
[4:29] Speaker 1: They were upset because Paul was preaching.
[4:31] Speaker 3: The gospel of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection. What is
[4:36] Speaker 3: this message you are telling these people? We are hearing
[4:39] Speaker 3: some very weird ideas. So please explain to us what
[4:43] Speaker 3: you are trying to tell these people. Paul rose to
[4:46] Speaker 3: his feet when this was said to him. He said, Athenians,
[4:51] Speaker 3: I can tell that you are a religious people by
[4:54] Speaker 3: all of the idols that I have seen in your streets.
[4:57] Speaker 3: I have even seen an idol called the unknown God.
[5:01] Speaker 3: You have no idea who you are even worshiping. Please
[5:06] Speaker 3: listen to what I have to say. The one who
[5:09] Speaker 3: created the water earth and sky the world and everything
[5:13] Speaker 3: in it is the God I proclaim to you today
[5:16] Speaker 3: he does not dwell in your temple he is not
[5:19] Speaker 3: an idol made by human hands he needs nothing from
[5:23] Speaker 3: you he is the one who gave you the very
[5:26] Speaker 3: breath you have in your lungs he created all of
[5:30] Speaker 3: your ancestors and all of the nations of the earth
[5:33] Speaker 3: from one Man, he marked out boundaries for the people
[5:37] Speaker 3: groups of the world. God desires for his creation to
[5:42] Speaker 3: seek him and believe in his divine power. Even one
[5:46] Speaker 3: of your poets said, For we live and move, we
[5:50] Speaker 3: have our being in him. So listen to me. Do
[5:54] Speaker 3: not confuse this God that I have just told you
[5:57] Speaker 3: about with the graven gold images that you have forged
[6:00] Speaker 3: with your own hand. God has looked past this kind
[6:04] Speaker 3: of behavior in the past, but he is being gracious
[6:08] Speaker 3: and is asking you to repent. He has set from
[6:11] Speaker 3: the beginning of time the day he will come back
[6:14] Speaker 3: and bring judgment to the people of earth. For he
[6:18] Speaker 3: rose from the dead just so he could show his
[6:21] Speaker 3: glory and come back for you on judgment day. People
[6:25] Speaker 3: were intrigued by what Paul had just said. Some, however,
[6:29] Speaker 3: snarled at him. The rest of the people looked to
[6:32] Speaker 3: him and said, can we hear more about this? Paul
[6:37] Speaker 3: then arose and left the room and some of the
[6:41] Speaker 3: believers who heard Paul became his followers. Paul left Athens
[6:46] Speaker 3: and went on to Corinth and sent for Silas and
[6:49] Speaker 3: Timothy to meet him there.
[6:55] Speaker 1: Whoa. Everywhere Paul goes, he tells people about Jesus, doesn't he?
[7:01] Speaker 1: And even though different people understand the good news in
[7:05] Speaker 1: different ways, Paul doesn't let it bother him. He just
[7:09] Speaker 1: changes how he explains things. So each group understands the
[7:13] Speaker 1: story of Jesus better. He's so smart. Let's take a
[7:18] Speaker 1: closer look at how he does it. In today's story,
[7:22] Speaker 1: Paul and his friends have taken a road trip to Thessalonica.
[7:25] Speaker 1: Usually when Paul visits a new city, the first place
[7:29] Speaker 1: he goes to is the synagogue. He wants his own people,
[7:32] Speaker 1: the Jews, to be saved. Plus, the Jews already know
[7:37] Speaker 1: all the Bible stories about Moses, David, Daniel, Esther, and
[7:41] Speaker 1: everybody else in the Old Testament. So they should understand
[7:45] Speaker 1: the story of Jesus best. But most of the time,
[7:50] Speaker 1: Jews treat Paul the worst. Even though he'd been a
[7:54] Speaker 1: famous Jewish teacher called a Pharisee, now that he believes
[7:58] Speaker 1: in Jesus, they call him a traitor and a liar. Still,
[8:04] Speaker 1: he doesn't give up. In Thessalonica, Paul goes to the
[8:08] Speaker 1: synagogue three weeks in a row to point out where
[8:10] Speaker 1: God's word shows that Jesus is the Messiah. Some Jews
[8:15] Speaker 1: believe that he's telling the truth. They are saved. But
[8:20] Speaker 1: other Jews get super duper angry. In fact, they get
[8:24] Speaker 1: so mad they start a riot. Paul and his friends
[8:27] Speaker 1: have to run for their lives and sneak out of
[8:30] Speaker 1: the city late, late at night. From Thessalonica, Paul runs
[8:35] Speaker 1: to Berea. Once again, he goes to the Jews and
[8:38] Speaker 1: the synagogue first. But this group of Jews is different.
[8:43] Speaker 1: Instead of just listening, they ask a lot of questions.
[8:47] Speaker 1: You see, In Thessalonica, some Jews had said absolutely yes
[8:52] Speaker 1: to Jesus and others said absolutely no. In Berea, the
[8:57] Speaker 1: Jews say, hmm, let's think about it. So Paul changes
[9:02] Speaker 1: how he talks to them. Instead of giving speeches, he
[9:05] Speaker 1: starts discussions. He answers all of their questions. The Bereans say, hmm,
[9:12] Speaker 1: a lot and carefully think about everything Paul says. On
[9:17] Speaker 1: top of it? They explore God's word themselves to see
[9:20] Speaker 1: what's true. They are very wise people. And soon, many
[9:25] Speaker 1: of them realize that Paul is right. They start believing
[9:29] Speaker 1: in Jesus too. Unfortunately, those super duper angry Jews from
[9:35] Speaker 1: Thessalonica have discovered where Paul went. And they come chasing
[9:40] Speaker 1: after him. He has to run for his life again.
[9:45] Speaker 1: This time, he runs to Athens, the capital of Greece.
[9:49] Speaker 1: The people there like to sit around all day and
[9:52] Speaker 1: talk about ideas. So Paul doesn't just talk to Jews
[9:56] Speaker 1: in Athens. He sits with the Greeks and talks about ideas.
[10:01] Speaker 1: The Greeks don't know Bible stories about Moses, David, Daniel, Esther,
[10:06] Speaker 1: or anybody else in the Old Testament. Instead, they believe
[10:11] Speaker 1: in lots of gods who have names like Zeus, Apollo,
[10:15] Speaker 1: and Athena, These gods are carved out of marble and stone,
[10:19] Speaker 1: and you never quite know how to make them happy.
[10:22] Speaker 1: The Greeks even built an altar to an extra god,
[10:26] Speaker 1: just in case he existed. They didn't know his name,
[10:29] Speaker 1: but they didn't want him to feel left out. Now,
[10:32] Speaker 1: Paul knows the Greeks don't know anything about God's word,
[10:36] Speaker 1: so he doesn't even bring it up. He changes the
[10:39] Speaker 1: way he talks again, so the good news of Jesus
[10:42] Speaker 1: will make sense to the Greek audience. And he does
[10:46] Speaker 1: it by talking about God with no name. Paul says,
[10:50] Speaker 1: what if God does have a name? What if he
[10:54] Speaker 1: really exists and all the other gods don't? Then Paul
[10:58] Speaker 1: tells them how God is the Lord. He created every
[11:03] Speaker 1: person and placed him or her in the exact time
[11:06] Speaker 1: and place where they lived. So they could hear the
[11:09] Speaker 1: good news of Jesus and be saved. You know? You're
[11:14] Speaker 1: living in the exact time and place where you can
[11:17] Speaker 1: hear about Jesus too and be saved. And when you
[11:21] Speaker 1: tell other people about Jesus, it's easy to focus on
[11:24] Speaker 1: what you want to say and how you want to
[11:28] Speaker 1: say it. But Paul paid attention to others first and
[11:32] Speaker 1: said what they needed to hear. Because he did, thousands
[11:37] Speaker 1: believed in Jesus. That's a pretty smart way for us
[11:40] Speaker 1: to share Jesus too. I am so happy you joined
[11:44] Speaker 1: me today. Come back next time to hear about a
[11:47] Speaker 1: very special couple who helped God build his kingdom through
[11:50] Speaker 1: a gift called hospitality. Remember, the Bible is the best
[11:55] Speaker 1: story ever told. It's God's story to you, and it's
[11:59] Speaker 1: all true. Felt inspired by today's episode? Leave a review
