[1:17] Speaker 3: The Passover Events In our last story, as Jesus was
[1:22] Speaker 3: making his way to Jerusalem... He made a fig tree wither,
[1:25] Speaker 3: flipped over the tables of money changers in the temple,
[1:28] Speaker 3: and told a parable about a landowner whose son was killed.
[1:32] Speaker 3: In this story, we will learn how Jesus is preparing
[1:35] Speaker 3: the disciples for his death through a Passover meal, and
[1:39] Speaker 3: how Jesus identifies the one who will betray him, as
[1:43] Speaker 3: inspired by the Gospels.
[1:48] Speaker 1: This is Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress Sadler.
[1:52] Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Kids Bible in Ear podcast. Thank
[1:55] Speaker 1: you so much for joining me. Jesus is sharing one
[1:59] Speaker 1: final meal with his closest friends today. There's a sadness
[2:03] Speaker 1: to it, but also a peace. Everything is in motion
[2:07] Speaker 1: to fulfill God's great plan. Jesus is showing us all
[2:12] Speaker 1: why he came. Here it is.
[2:17] Speaker 3: Jesus said to his disciples that the Passover is in
[2:21] Speaker 3: two days, and that is when the Son of Man
[2:24] Speaker 3: will be crucified. So, as the day of Passover was
[2:28] Speaker 3: coming closer, and the high priests and teachers of the
[2:32] Speaker 3: law were trying to remove Jesus because people were beginning
[2:36] Speaker 3: to believe his teachings, Satan had already deceived one of
[2:40] Speaker 3: the disciples named Judas Iscariot. Judas discussed with the government
[2:46] Speaker 3: leaders on how to get rid of Jesus. They gave
[2:50] Speaker 3: Judas money, 30 pieces of silver, for him to betray Jesus.
[2:56] Speaker 3: And Judas watched and waited for an opportunity to come up.
[3:01] Speaker 3: The day where the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed
[3:04] Speaker 3: had come, and Jesus told Peter and John to get
[3:07] Speaker 3: things ready for Passover. They wanted to know where they
[3:11] Speaker 3: should get ready for the feast. Jesus answered, There will
[3:15] Speaker 3: be a man with a jug of water in which
[3:17] Speaker 3: you will follow him into a house. Then tell the
[3:21] Speaker 3: homeowner that your teacher wants to know where their extra
[3:24] Speaker 3: room is so we can eat the Passover dinner with
[3:27] Speaker 3: all of the disciples. Then they will show you the
[3:31] Speaker 3: upper room so you can get ready there. When they
[3:35] Speaker 3: went to the city, everything happened as Jesus.
[3:38] Speaker 4: Had said, and they prepared things.
[3:41] Speaker 3: Jesus was aware that God was with him, and that
[3:44] Speaker 3: he was returning to his father soon. Jesus took off
[3:48] Speaker 3: his robe, wrapped a towel around him, and began to
[3:51] Speaker 3: wash his disciples' feet. He dried their feet when Peter
[3:55] Speaker 3: said to him, Why do you wash our feet? He responded,
[4:01] Speaker 3: Though you do not understand at the moment, you will
[4:05] Speaker 3: understand soon. At this time, Peter refused to let Jesus
[4:10] Speaker 3: wash his feet. And Jesus told him that if he
[4:13] Speaker 3: did not allow him to wash his feet, then he
[4:16] Speaker 3: would not have a part in him. After Jesus said that,
[4:21] Speaker 3: Peter wanted him to wash his hands, feet, and head.
[4:25] Speaker 3: But Jesus told him that those who have taken a
[4:27] Speaker 3: bath are already clean and just needed their feet to
[4:31] Speaker 3: be cleaned once again. Though you are clean, does not mean.
[4:36] Speaker 4: Everyone who is present here is clean.
[4:39] Speaker 3: He said this in reference to Judas, who was in
[4:42] Speaker 3: the room, because he knew that he was the one
[4:46] Speaker 3: who was going to betray him. After getting done with
[4:50] Speaker 3: this cleansing, he asked his disciples if they understood what
[4:54] Speaker 3: he had done for them. He said, You call me
[4:57] Speaker 3: teacher and Lord because I am these things to you.
[5:02] Speaker 3: Since I am your teacher and I have showed you
[5:05] Speaker 3: how to wash your feet, You now know what to
[5:08] Speaker 3: do for each other in washing their feet. I have
[5:11] Speaker 3: set an example for you to do this as well.
[5:15] Speaker 3: No one is greater than the one they serve, and
[5:17] Speaker 3: the messenger cannot be greater than the person who sent them.
[5:22] Speaker 3: Now that you know this, be blessed when you do
[5:26] Speaker 3: these things. While they were still eating, he expressed that
[5:30] Speaker 3: it will be one of the disciples that will turn
[5:33] Speaker 3: against him. They then became unhappy and questioned themselves, saying,
[5:38] Speaker 3: Will it be me, Lord? Jesus explained that the person
[5:42] Speaker 3: who will betray him will be the one to dip
[5:45] Speaker 3: his hands in the bowl. He said, It is written
[5:49] Speaker 3: that I will have to go, but the person who
[5:52] Speaker 3: turns their back on myself should be cautious. They will
[5:56] Speaker 3: have wished that they were not even born. The one
[6:00] Speaker 3: who will go against Jesus, which is Judas Iscariot, asked,
[6:06] Speaker 3: Is it me, Lord? The Lord simply answered, You said it.
[6:13] Speaker 3: The Lord explained that the one who will dip their
[6:16] Speaker 3: bread into the dish will be the one who will
[6:18] Speaker 3: betray him. Then he gave it to Judas, and Jesus
[6:23] Speaker 3: said to him, Do whatever you are going to do, fast.
[6:29] Speaker 3: The others at the table did not understand what Jesus
[6:32] Speaker 3: meant when he said these things to him. They thought
[6:35] Speaker 3: that he was telling Judas to use the money that
[6:37] Speaker 3: he had because he was in charge of it to
[6:40] Speaker 3: buy things to prepare for the festival or to give
[6:43] Speaker 3: money to the poor. Judas took the bread from Jesus
[6:48] Speaker 3: and went out that night. Later in the meal, Jesus
[6:52] Speaker 3: took a piece of bread, And after he gave thanks
[6:55] Speaker 3: for it, he then broke it into pieces and gave
[6:58] Speaker 3: it to his disciples. He said, Take this bread as
[7:03] Speaker 3: my body and eat. Then he took a cup of wine,
[7:07] Speaker 3: gave thanks for it, and gave it to his disciples
[7:10] Speaker 3: to drink. He said, Drink this wine, for this is
[7:15] Speaker 3: my blood, which is shed to forgive the world of
[7:19] Speaker 3: their sins. I will no longer drink anything from this fruit. Wow.
[7:24] Speaker 3: Before we dive in, let's stop and ask God to
[7:26] Speaker 3: help us understand today's story. Lord, please open our eyes.
[7:30] Speaker 4: And hearts to understand what you show us.
[7:38] Speaker 3: In this Passover meal.
[7:52] Speaker 1: Thank you for your amazing, perfect plan of salvation. Amen.
[7:58] Speaker 1: All right, as we open, Jesus and his friends are
[8:01] Speaker 1: preparing to eat a Passover meal together. They still didn't
[8:06] Speaker 1: understand what was happening, but they definitely knew this was
[8:10] Speaker 1: no ordinary meal. Meanwhile, Judas was plotting with the Jewish
[8:15] Speaker 1: leaders and agreed to show them where Jesus was for
[8:18] Speaker 1: 30 pieces of silver. He was going to hand him
[8:22] Speaker 1: over to the ones who wanted him dead, all for
[8:25] Speaker 1: 30 lousy pieces of silver. This meal was a special
[8:31] Speaker 1: part of Passover, the time when the Israelites remembered how
[8:35] Speaker 1: God delivered them from slavery in Egypt. You can find
[8:39] Speaker 1: that true story in your Bible, way back towards the
[8:42] Speaker 1: beginning in the book of Exodus. All the food and
[8:45] Speaker 1: drink in the meal had special meaning to celebrate all
[8:48] Speaker 1: God had done to rescue his people. By this time
[8:53] Speaker 1: with Jesus, there was a new meaning. Jesus wrapped a
[8:57] Speaker 1: towel around his waist and began washing their feet. He
[9:01] Speaker 1: did this to set an example for them and us
[9:04] Speaker 1: of what he wanted them to do once he left earth.
[9:07] Speaker 1: He said, just as I have done to you, you
[9:11] Speaker 1: do to others. Again, we see that to love others
[9:15] Speaker 1: means to serve. Then Jesus took the bread and broke it.
[9:20] Speaker 1: He gave it to his friends saying, this is my body.
[9:23] Speaker 1: You see, Jesus was about to suffer a lot and
[9:26] Speaker 1: the soldiers were going to hurt his body. They would
[9:30] Speaker 1: soon whip him, drive nails into his hands and feet,
[9:36] Speaker 1: place thorns on his head and much more. He was
[9:40] Speaker 1: offering his body, the bread, to his disciples as a
[9:44] Speaker 1: sign of love for them. He was saying, take this.
[9:49] Speaker 1: I am doing it for you. Because of all the
[9:51] Speaker 1: The very time that Jews in Jerusalem were sacrificing Passover
[9:52] Speaker 1: sin in the world, the only way for Jesus to
[9:54] Speaker 1: lambs to celebrate this holiday, God was allowing his son,
[9:54] Speaker 1: save us and make us right with God again was
[9:56] Speaker 1: the Lamb of God, to be sacrificed. To be sacrificed
[9:57] Speaker 1: to pay the punishment for our So think about this.
[10:18] Speaker 1: on a cross and pay the cost for our sins.
[10:21] Speaker 1: Do you see that connection? It's just incredible. Next, Jesus
[10:27] Speaker 1: took the cup. He told them to drink because the
[10:30] Speaker 1: wine was a symbol of his blood. Jesus was about
[10:34] Speaker 1: to bleed a lot. And the blood that would pour
[10:38] Speaker 1: out from his body was again a sign of his
[10:41] Speaker 1: love for us. It was the way in which he
[10:45] Speaker 1: would save us. In your church, you may have participated
[10:49] Speaker 1: in what we call the Lord's Supper or communion. Together
[10:54] Speaker 1: as God's children, we share this meal and take the
[10:57] Speaker 1: bread and the cup as a sign of Jesus's body
[11:00] Speaker 1: and blood. Each time we do it, we remember the
[11:03] Speaker 1: sacrifice Jesus made for us. In our hearts, we receive
[11:07] Speaker 1: his body and his blood and we say, thank you, Jesus.
[11:11] Speaker 1: There is no love as great as yours. Jesus called
[11:16] Speaker 1: this a new covenant. Things were different now. The old
[11:20] Speaker 1: covenant came from Moses, the Ten Commandments, and the laws
[11:24] Speaker 1: that all the Pharisees tried to keep perfectly. But now,
[11:28] Speaker 1: no longer are we expected to keep God's laws and
[11:32] Speaker 1: make ourselves good enough to get to Him. All we
[11:36] Speaker 1: have to do is take what Jesus is giving to us,
[11:40] Speaker 1: His body and His blood, All we.
[11:42] Speaker 3: Have to do is accept.
[11:44] Speaker 1: His sacrifice for our sins on the cross. Now, we
[11:49] Speaker 1: still try to keep the laws, but we do that
[11:52] Speaker 1: to show our love for him, not to earn our
[11:55] Speaker 1: way to heaven. Because Jesus has already earned that. We
[11:59] Speaker 1: are forgiven and free. It sounds too good to be true, right?
[12:05] Speaker 1: Believe me when I say it's not. By now, you
[12:09] Speaker 1: know that the Bible is the best story ever told
[12:12] Speaker 1: It's God's story to you. And it's all true. Mark
[12:17] Speaker 1: tells us that as they finished the meal, they went
[12:20] Speaker 1: out and sang a hymn. Do you have a favorite
[12:23] Speaker 1: worship song? Now would be a great time to sing it.
[12:27] Speaker 1: And be sure to come back next time when we
[12:29] Speaker 1: find Jesus sweating drops of blood, praying in the garden,
[12:33] Speaker 1: and betrayed with a kiss. Can't wait for the next episode?
