[1:24] Speaker 2: In this story.
[1:26] Speaker 3: We will learn about the three wise men and how
[1:28] Speaker 3: Jesus escaped to Egypt because of the decree of Herod
[1:32] Speaker 3: to put to death all babies under the age of two,
[1:36] Speaker 3: as inspired by the Gospels.
[1:43] Speaker 1: Hi, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffer Sadler
[1:47] Speaker 1: with the Kids Bible in a Year podcast. I am
[1:50] Speaker 1: so excited you're here today. In this story, we get
[1:53] Speaker 1: to hear the story of the wise men and what
[1:57] Speaker 1: they can tell us about God today. Are you ready?
[2:00] Speaker 1: Let's listen.
[2:03] Speaker 3: Around the time of Jesus' birth, there were three wise
[2:07] Speaker 3: men from the East who saw the signs of the
[2:10] Speaker 3: birth of the Savior. In their studies that spanned many subjects,
[2:14] Speaker 3: they had made notes that one day a Savior King
[2:17] Speaker 3: would come to Israel. and knew that one of the
[2:20] Speaker 3: signs would be in the sky. Today was the day
[2:24] Speaker 3: that they spotted the star that led them to believe
[2:28] Speaker 3: that Savior was to be born. That very evening, they
[2:32] Speaker 3: began to prepare for a trip, packing everything that they
[2:36] Speaker 3: would need to travel for a long time, as well
[2:39] Speaker 3: as bringing gifts to give this newborn king. As soon
[2:42] Speaker 3: as they were prepared, they set out on their journeys.
[2:46] Speaker 3: They followed the star in the sky that they believed
[2:49] Speaker 3: to be the sign and marker of the Savior's birth.
[2:53] Speaker 3: It led them to the city of Jerusalem, and they
[2:56] Speaker 3: went to the leader of the region, King Herod. They
[3:00] Speaker 3: asked if he knew of the newborn king. At hearing this,
[3:03] Speaker 3: Herod was confused and concerned for his own power, but
[3:07] Speaker 3: he kept a calm demeanor and told them he had
[3:10] Speaker 3: not heard, but would check with his advisors. Herod excused himself.
[3:15] Speaker 3: and went to talk to his Jewish advisors, and asked
[3:18] Speaker 3: where this king was to be born. After checking their
[3:22] Speaker 3: own notes, they told Herod that the Messiah was to
[3:25] Speaker 3: be born in Bethlehem. Quickly, Herod crafted a plan to
[3:29] Speaker 3: send these wise men to the baby, and then for
[3:31] Speaker 3: them to bring him to the baby, at which point
[3:35] Speaker 3: he would kill baby Jesus and solidify his own power.
[3:40] Speaker 3: He returned to the wise men, and told them what
[3:42] Speaker 3: he had learned, and asked that they would come back
[3:45] Speaker 3: and tell him exactly where the baby was, so that
[3:48] Speaker 3: he too might worship this new king. The wise men
[3:51] Speaker 3: continued on their journey at once, departing for Bethlehem. They
[3:55] Speaker 3: did not have to search long before finding the house
[3:58] Speaker 3: of Joseph and Mary and their son, Jesus. They presented
[4:03] Speaker 3: their gifts and worshipped the young Jesus. When their time
[4:07] Speaker 3: with Jesus came to an end, They were about to
[4:10] Speaker 3: return to King Herod and tell him where they found Jesus. However,
[4:14] Speaker 3: before they could return to Herod, God spoke to them
[4:18] Speaker 3: and informed them of the plot that Herod had and
[4:21] Speaker 3: that he was going to kill Jesus if they told
[4:24] Speaker 3: him where he was. After hearing this, they decided to
[4:28] Speaker 3: take another route home. The night after they left, God
[4:34] Speaker 3: also sent an angel to speak to Joseph who said,
[4:38] Speaker 3: Take your family and run. Herod is coming to kill Jesus.
[4:42] Speaker 3: Go to Egypt.
[4:44] Speaker 2: You will be safe there.
[4:46] Speaker 3: So Joseph woke up his family and took them to Egypt.
[4:49] Speaker 3: When Herod realized the wise men never returned, he was outraged,
[4:54] Speaker 3: and he sent his soldiers to kill all the little
[4:56] Speaker 3: boys under the age of two in hopes that one
[4:59] Speaker 3: of them would be this newborn king. This brought great
[5:03] Speaker 3: tears to the families that lost their children at this time.
[5:07] Speaker 3: A few years passed, and Jesus and his family were
[5:10] Speaker 3: still in Egypt, but news was getting around that King
[5:13] Speaker 3: Herod had passed away. Shortly after they heard this news,
[5:17] Speaker 3: an angel of God appeared to Joseph and said to him,
[5:21] Speaker 3: It is safe to return to your home. So they
[5:24] Speaker 3: packed up from Egypt and set back to Israel. However,
[5:28] Speaker 3: Joseph did not want to return to Bethlehem out of
[5:31] Speaker 3: concerns for safety, so they returned instead to Nazareth. This
[5:36] Speaker 3: also fulfilled the scripture that said Jesus would be called
[5:40] Speaker 3: a Nazarene. Jesus grew up here and God was with
[5:45] Speaker 3: him always.
[5:50] Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, what a story! Now, you may have
[5:54] Speaker 1: already known the wise men from the Christmas story. But
[5:58] Speaker 1: their story shows us something surprising and wonderful about God...
[6:03] Speaker 1: that you may have not known. To find out what
[6:06] Speaker 1: it is, we have to become Bible detectives. So put
[6:10] Speaker 1: your clue finding, problem solving, super smart thinking cap on
[6:14] Speaker 1: and get ready to become a master figure outer with me.
[6:17] Speaker 1: Are you ready? Okay, let's examine the clues. Clue number
[6:22] Speaker 1: one is that you guys are called wise men. Think, think, think.
[6:27] Speaker 1: Do you remember about another Bible story when someone hung
[6:30] Speaker 1: around guys called wise men? Clue number two is that
[6:34] Speaker 1: these wise men came from the east. The Jews once
[6:37] Speaker 1: spent a long, long time in a big city to
[6:41] Speaker 1: the east of Israel. Do you remember the name of
[6:44] Speaker 1: that city? Clue number three. These wise men studied stars
[6:49] Speaker 1: and they knew Jewish history. They knew Balaam had once
[6:53] Speaker 1: blessed Israel saying a star would come from Jacob's people.
[6:58] Speaker 1: And they knew this star represented a special king. Unlike
[7:02] Speaker 1: any other king, that god would send and they knew
[7:06] Speaker 1: to bring this king stuff you would find in god's
[7:08] Speaker 1: temple as presents all right got your clue finding problem
[7:13] Speaker 1: solving super smart thinking cap on let's put these clues
[7:17] Speaker 1: together what was the name of the city where the
[7:20] Speaker 1: jews spent a long time yes babylon who used to
[7:26] Speaker 1: hang out with other wise men Right, Daniel, who also
[7:30] Speaker 1: lived in Babylon. Who knew Jewish history and what should
[7:34] Speaker 1: be inside of the temple? And that God had promised
[7:37] Speaker 1: a special king would come to Israel? The Jews who
[7:41] Speaker 1: had lived in Babylon. You see, even the Jewish people
[7:45] Speaker 1: were so very sad to be taken away from Jerusalem.
[7:49] Speaker 1: Faithful Jews like Daniel held on to hope in God's
[7:52] Speaker 1: promise of a Messiah, even in Babylon. So they told
[7:57] Speaker 1: the next generation of people living in Babylon about that promise.
[8:01] Speaker 1: And they told the next generation, who told the next generation,
[8:06] Speaker 1: and so on and so on, until a long line
[8:09] Speaker 1: of people sat and watched the stars each night, waiting
[8:14] Speaker 1: to see God's promise fulfilled. Then one night, there it was,
[8:18] Speaker 1: a bright, bright star, shining like hope after 400 years
[8:22] Speaker 1: of darkness. And these wise men knew God's king had come.
[8:29] Speaker 3: So they packed up.
[8:30] Speaker 1: Presents that looked and smelled like God's home, the temple,
[8:35] Speaker 1: and came to worship him. You see, even though living
[8:38] Speaker 1: in Babylon had felt scary and sad for Daniel and
[8:42] Speaker 1: Jews at the time, in God's hand, that bad thing
[8:46] Speaker 1: turned into something special. Our story of the wise men.
[8:50] Speaker 1: God did it with Egypt too. Did you see? Put
[8:54] Speaker 1: your clue-finding, problem-solving, super-smart thinking cap back on and let's
[8:57] Speaker 1: figure it out. What kinds of memories did the Israelites
[9:01] Speaker 1: have of Egypt? Bad ones. It was a dangerous, scary
[9:05] Speaker 1: place where they worked as slaves for 400 years. It
[9:09] Speaker 1: was where God had rescued them from. Through the Red
[9:13] Speaker 1: Sea and across the desert to the beautiful Promised Land. Israel,
[9:17] Speaker 1: their home. But now Jesus and his family were running
[9:21] Speaker 1: away from Israel to Egypt. In God's hands, the place
[9:26] Speaker 1: that once felt the scariest had become the safest. So
[9:31] Speaker 1: what surprising and wonderful thing about God did we learn today?
[9:35] Speaker 1: That no matter how scary something or someone is, in
[9:40] Speaker 1: God's hands, what's bad can become beautiful. He can turn
[9:44] Speaker 1: anything that's dark into a bright, shining hope. Mystery solved.
[9:50] Speaker 1: I am so happy you joined me today. Come back
[9:53] Speaker 1: next time to hear what Jesus was like when he
[9:55] Speaker 1: was around your age. Remember, the Bible is the best story.
[10:00] Speaker 1: ever told. It's God's story to you. And it's all true.
