[1:15] Speaker 4: In our last story, Alicia said there would be an
[1:20] Speaker 4: end to the famine. So four lepers went into the
[1:24] Speaker 4: city and found that the Arameans had fled.
[1:27] Speaker 2: So the people came.
[1:28] Speaker 4: And ate all the food in the Aramean camp. In
[1:32] Speaker 4: this story, Elisha will help the Shunammite woman again and
[1:36] Speaker 4: also predict evil coming from Hazael. As inspired by Second Kings.
[1:46] Speaker 2: Hi, this is Joy Sabler. I'm glad you're back.
[1:49] Speaker 1: Thanks for joining me today for the Kids Bible in
[1:52] Speaker 1: a Year podcast. Today's story has some good news and
[1:56] Speaker 1: some bad news. The good news reminds us of how
[2:00] Speaker 1: God is always watching over us. And the bad news
[2:04] Speaker 1: shows us how sometimes things that God allows to happen
[2:08] Speaker 1: might make us sad. Right now in your heart, ask
[2:11] Speaker 1: God to speak to you through his word.
[2:14] Speaker 2: Here we go.
[2:18] Speaker 4: There was a famine coming to the land. So Elisha
[2:21] Speaker 4: told the mother and her son, who he had brought
[2:23] Speaker 4: back to life earlier, to stay somewhere else for a
[2:26] Speaker 4: while because the famine was going to last seven years.
[2:32] Speaker 4: The woman took her family and they traveled to the
[2:34] Speaker 4: land of the Philistines. When the seven years of the
[2:37] Speaker 4: famine was over, the woman wanted to go back to
[2:40] Speaker 4: her land where her house was. When she got there,
[2:43] Speaker 4: she went to the king and begged him for her
[2:46] Speaker 4: land and home back. The king was talking to Gehazi
[2:50] Speaker 4: and asked him, Tell me about the good things that
[2:53] Speaker 4: Elisha has done. Gehazi replied, He brought a baby boy
[2:57] Speaker 4: who was dead back to life, and the woman who
[3:00] Speaker 4: is asking you for her house back was the mother
[3:04] Speaker 4: of that boy. The king went to his servants and
[3:07] Speaker 4: told them to give the woman her land and her
[3:09] Speaker 4: house back and to give her all the money that
[3:12] Speaker 4: was made from the seven years that she was gone.
[3:15] Speaker 4: Elisha went on a journey to Damascus, and the king
[3:18] Speaker 4: of Aram was sick, and he thought he was going
[3:21] Speaker 4: to die. So when he found out that Elisha was there,
[3:25] Speaker 4: he sent his servant Hazael to greet him with a gift.
[3:28] Speaker 4: He told Hazael to ask Elisha if God was going
[3:31] Speaker 4: to heal him and if he was going to recover.
[3:35] Speaker 4: When Hazael asked, Elisha replied, Elisha started crying while he
[3:39] Speaker 4: was telling this to Hazael. Why are you crying?
[3:41] Speaker 3: Asked Hazael.
[3:43] Speaker 4: Elisha answered, I know the harm you will do to
[3:53] Speaker 4: the Israelites. You will set fires to the places, kill
[3:57] Speaker 4: the men, dash the children to the ground, and rip
[4:01] Speaker 4: open the pregnant women. Hazael told Elisha that he would
[4:05] Speaker 4: not do that. Hazael went back to the king and
[4:08] Speaker 4: told him that Elisha said he would get well. The
[4:12] Speaker 4: next day, Hazael took a cloth, soaked it in water,
[4:15] Speaker 4: and spread it over the king's face, and he died. Then, Hazael,
[4:21] Speaker 4: announced himself as king.
[4:27] Speaker 1: Well, as you can see, a lot happened in today's story.
[4:31] Speaker 1: And as it closes, there's a new king in town.
[4:34] Speaker 1: We'll get to that next time. We begin with another
[4:37] Speaker 1: famine in the land as Elisha helped his Shunammite friend
[4:42] Speaker 1: by telling her to take her family to the land
[4:44] Speaker 1: of the Philistines.
[4:46] Speaker 5: Why?
[4:47] Speaker 1: Because there was more food there. This famine would last
[4:50] Speaker 1: for seven whole years. So she took her family there,
[4:54] Speaker 1: and they were safe and fed for seven years. When
[4:57] Speaker 1: they returned, the king, hearing about her story and past,
[5:02] Speaker 1: ensured she received her.
[5:04] Speaker 2: Land, home, and food again. How happy she must have been.
[5:08] Speaker 1: Clearly, God had his hand on this woman and her son.
[5:12] Speaker 1: It's a great reminder for us that when we honor
[5:15] Speaker 1: God and follow him, Although bad things might happen in
[5:19] Speaker 1: this world, God is always taking care of us. He
[5:22] Speaker 1: is always providing everything we need. And as long as
[5:26] Speaker 1: we live, we never have to doubt that. You are
[5:31] Speaker 1: a child of God, and He is a very good
[5:33] Speaker 1: Father to you.
[5:35] Speaker 2: No matter how you.
[5:36] Speaker 1: Feel, He is with you and going ahead of you
[5:39] Speaker 1: to ensure you are always taken care of.
[5:42] Speaker 2: So always remember that.
[5:45] Speaker 1: Because trust me, it can be easy to forget. Our
[5:49] Speaker 1: story then shifts to the king of Aram, who is
[5:52] Speaker 1: very sick and not looking too good. His servant, Hazael,
[5:56] Speaker 1: took a gift to Elisha and asked him if the
[5:59] Speaker 1: king would recover. It sounds like everyone knew where to
[6:03] Speaker 1: go when they needed answers. Elisha's track record was pretty amazing. Then,
[6:10] Speaker 1: as we heard, Elisha said yes, the king would recover.
[6:13] Speaker 2: However.
[6:15] Speaker 1: He would die soon after. Then God's word tells us
[6:19] Speaker 1: that Elisha began to cry. Now why do you think
[6:22] Speaker 1: Elisha was crying? Remember, Elisha was a prophet. A prophet
[6:27] Speaker 1: in the Old Testament.
[6:28] Speaker 2: Was a man or woman.
[6:30] Speaker 1: Called by God to speak for him and tell God's
[6:34] Speaker 1: people what they needed to know.
[6:36] Speaker 2: These prophets loved and served God.
[6:39] Speaker 1: Faithfully, and they would do anything God told them to do.
[6:43] Speaker 1: Sometimes it was exciting being a prophet, especially when you
[6:47] Speaker 1: had good news.
[6:48] Speaker 2: I mean, think about it.
[6:49] Speaker 1: You would get to speak on behalf of the God
[6:52] Speaker 1: of the universe.
[6:54] Speaker 2: That's pretty cool.
[6:55] Speaker 1: A prophet in that time might get to tell someone
[6:58] Speaker 1: that they would soon be healed, that they would win
[7:01] Speaker 1: a huge battle, or that their son would be a
[7:03] Speaker 1: great king one day.
[7:05] Speaker 2: Those were good days. But other days it was not
[7:09] Speaker 2: so fun.
[7:10] Speaker 1: A prophet might have to tell someone that God was
[7:13] Speaker 1: about to punish them.
[7:14] Speaker 2: Someone was about to die.
[7:16] Speaker 1: Or something else terrible was about to happen. And on
[7:20] Speaker 1: those days, a prophet might feel lonely and sad. This
[7:24] Speaker 1: was one of those days for Elisha. Because Elisha knew
[7:28] Speaker 1: that Hazael was going to do awful things to God's people.
[7:33] Speaker 1: Just saying it out loud made him sad. He didn't
[7:36] Speaker 1: want it to be true, but he knew... that since
[7:39] Speaker 1: God had said it, it was going to happen. It's
[7:42] Speaker 1: kind of like watching a movie with a very sad
[7:44] Speaker 1: ending that you've seen a hundred times. Even though you
[7:48] Speaker 1: know how it's going to end, you hope.
[7:50] Speaker 2: It might turn out differently this time.
[7:53] Speaker 1: But if there's one thing we know for sure, it's
[7:55] Speaker 1: that when God says something is going to happen, we
[7:59] Speaker 1: can count on it.
[8:00] Speaker 2: No questions asked.
[8:02] Speaker 1: And even though Elisha is not here today to give
[8:05] Speaker 1: us a special message from God.
[8:07] Speaker 2: We have something even better. We have God's written holy word.
[8:13] Speaker 2: And you know what that means? We can hear God
[8:16] Speaker 2: speak to us anytime we want.
[8:19] Speaker 1: So in closing, Hosea went back home and the Bible
[8:22] Speaker 1: tells us that he killed the king of Aram. Pronounced
[8:26] Speaker 1: himself as king. And well, that wasn't exactly a good thing.
[8:30] Speaker 1: But we'll talk more about that next time. For now,
[8:34] Speaker 1: thanks for listening to today's story. And as always, remember
[8:38] Speaker 1: this one thing. The Bible is the best story ever told.
[8:43] Speaker 1: It's God's story to you.
[8:45] Speaker 2: And it's all true.
