[1:02] Speaker 4: Healing on the Sabbath. In our last story, we learned
[1:07] Speaker 4: about how Jesus healed a woman with a bleeding issue
[1:11] Speaker 4: and raised Jairus' daughter. In this story, Jesus will be
[1:16] Speaker 4: challenged again for healing a man who has been sick
[1:19] Speaker 4: for 38 years on the Sabbath, as inspired by the Gospels.
[1:28] Speaker 1: Hi guys, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress Sadler.
[1:33] Speaker 1: And I'm back for another story from the Kids Bible
[1:35] Speaker 1: in a Year podcast. Thanks for being here. Today, we
[1:40] Speaker 1: are diving into the pool of Bethesda. Well, not really.
[1:44] Speaker 1: But we're talking about something special that happened there and why,
[1:48] Speaker 1: once again, God's ways are always better than ours. Let's
[1:53] Speaker 1: listen in.
[1:56] Speaker 4: There was a man who had been sick for 38 years,
[2:00] Speaker 4: which was most of his life. He lay on his
[2:03] Speaker 4: bed near a special pool called Bethesda in Jerusalem. An
[2:09] Speaker 4: angel would come to this pool and stir the water.
[2:13] Speaker 4: The people believed whoever entered the water first would be healed.
[2:17] Speaker 4: There was only one problem. The sick man was never first.
[2:23] Speaker 4: There was always someone who would get to the.
[2:26] Speaker 2: Water before him. But he kept.
[2:28] Speaker 4: Waiting for his turn. One day, Jesus went to Bethesda
[2:34] Speaker 4: and saw the sick man. He asked the man, Do
[2:37] Speaker 4: you want to get better? The sick man said, I do,
[2:42] Speaker 4: but I'm never the first one in the pool after
[2:45] Speaker 4: the water is stirred.
[2:47] Speaker 2: So Jesus told the man, Get up and walk. The
[2:52] Speaker 2: man stood up, and he was no longer sick. He
[2:56] Speaker 2: could walk again. Jesus had healed him.
[2:59] Speaker 4: The man picked up his bed, and began to walk
[3:02] Speaker 4: away with it. Jesus slipped into a crowd of people.
[3:07] Speaker 4: Jewish leaders spotted the man carrying his rolled-up bed. They
[3:11] Speaker 4: were angry with him because it was illegal to carry
[3:14] Speaker 4: bedrolls on the Sabbath. The Jewish people believed the Sabbath
[3:18] Speaker 4: was a holy day of rest.
[3:19] Speaker 2: No one could work on the Sabbath.
[3:22] Speaker 4: The Jewish leader thought the man was working, so they
[3:25] Speaker 4: stopped him and said, Who told you to work?
[3:29] Speaker 2: A man who healed me. He's gone now. The next
[3:34] Speaker 2: time the man saw Jesus, they were in the temple.
[3:38] Speaker 4: Jesus said, For the first time, the man realized it
[3:46] Speaker 4: was Jesus speaking to him.
[3:49] Speaker 2: Jesus had healed him.
[3:50] Speaker 4: The man ran off to tell the Jewish leaders all
[3:53] Speaker 4: about it. However, the Jewish leaders were not happy. They
[3:58] Speaker 4: thought it was illegal for Jesus to heal people on
[4:01] Speaker 4: the Sabbath.
[4:02] Speaker 2: It was work. But Jesus said to the leaders, God
[4:06] Speaker 2: works on the Sabbath. So will I.
[4:11] Speaker 4: The leaders wanted to kill Jesus because he didn't follow
[4:15] Speaker 4: their rules. He thinks he is the same as God.
[4:19] Speaker 4: He thinks God is his father. Jesus said, I do what.
[4:24] Speaker 2: My father God tells me.
[4:26] Speaker 4: God loves His Son and gives Him the power to
[4:29] Speaker 4: do amazing things. God has made the Son judge of
[4:34] Speaker 4: everyone because we are equal. If you don't listen to
[4:38] Speaker 4: the Son, then you don't listen to God either. Someday
[4:42] Speaker 4: God will judge everyone. But not everyone will hear. If
[4:48] Speaker 4: you hear the voice of God's Son, you will live forever.
[4:53] Speaker 4: I can do nothing by myself. But I go to
[4:56] Speaker 4: God and I do what he wants because he sent
[5:00] Speaker 4: me here. If I speak about myself, you will think
[5:03] Speaker 4: I am lying. But John the Baptist told the truth
[5:06] Speaker 4: about me. And you didn't listen to him either. You
[5:10] Speaker 4: have seen me heal sick people and perform all.
[5:13] Speaker 2: Kinds of miracles.
[5:15] Speaker 4: But you still do not believe in me. Even Moses
[5:20] Speaker 4: wrote about me. You read about me in scripture all
[5:23] Speaker 4: the time. but you don't believe what Moses wrote.
[5:27] Speaker 2: So how will you believe what I say?
[5:37] Speaker 1: How powerful the words of Jesus are. Just like when
[5:41] Speaker 1: he told that storm to calm down, today he tells
[5:44] Speaker 1: a man whose legs don't work to get up and walk.
[5:50] Speaker 1: We open today's story at a place called the Pool
[5:53] Speaker 1: of Bethesda. This pool was filled with water, and many
[5:58] Speaker 1: people who were sick or unable to walk would lay
[6:01] Speaker 1: by the water. They believed that when the water was stirred,
[6:07] Speaker 1: it would heal them. The Bible tells of a man
[6:10] Speaker 1: who could not walk and had been lying on his
[6:12] Speaker 1: bed by that pool for 38 years. That sure is
[6:17] Speaker 1: a long time. When Jesus saw this man, he must
[6:21] Speaker 1: have felt compassion on him. Why do you think he
[6:24] Speaker 1: chose that man out of all the people at the pool?
[6:28] Speaker 1: We're not sure. Maybe Jesus saw that he was so
[6:32] Speaker 1: very sad and without any hope, and he wanted to
[6:35] Speaker 1: give him a reason to live. Then Jesus asked an
[6:39] Speaker 1: interesting question. He asked this man if he wanted to
[6:43] Speaker 1: get better. Now, this might have been because the man
[6:46] Speaker 1: looked so down and discouraged. Maybe he had given up.
[6:50] Speaker 1: Maybe he just wasn't even trying anymore because there was
[6:54] Speaker 1: no use. Maybe he even wanted to die. The man
[6:59] Speaker 1: told Jesus his problem. He did want to get better,
[7:04] Speaker 1: but he couldn't get the water at the right time.
[7:07] Speaker 1: When the pool was stirred, people were always getting in
[7:11] Speaker 1: front of him. He didn't have anyone there who could
[7:14] Speaker 1: carry him and get him there in time. There's a
[7:18] Speaker 1: good lesson here for us. You see, the man could
[7:21] Speaker 1: only think of one way to solve this problem. Get
[7:25] Speaker 1: to the water faster. Little did he know the answer
[7:29] Speaker 1: to this healing was actually the person standing right in
[7:32] Speaker 1: front of him. Did you know we do this sometimes?
[7:36] Speaker 1: When we have a problem, we think we know just
[7:39] Speaker 1: what we need to make everything better. We want whatever
[7:43] Speaker 1: is wrong to be fixed immediately. And then the way
[7:46] Speaker 1: we think it should be fixed. And when it isn't,
[7:49] Speaker 1: we get discouraged and impatient. But what if Jesus is
[7:54] Speaker 1: standing in front of us saying, I have a better way.
[7:59] Speaker 1: This is why it's always so important to go to
[8:01] Speaker 1: God with our problems. Talk to him, tell him about
[8:05] Speaker 1: what is wrong and ask him questions. If you're confused,
[8:10] Speaker 1: mad or sad, tell him. But then tell him you
[8:15] Speaker 1: want his best plan for you and try to listen
[8:19] Speaker 1: for his voice. Be patient and let God handle your
[8:23] Speaker 1: problem in his timing, which is always perfect, by the way.
[8:29] Speaker 1: After the man explains his problem, Jesus simply told him
[8:33] Speaker 1: to take up his bed and walk. And that was that.
[8:37] Speaker 1: This sick man must have had faith because if he didn't,
[8:41] Speaker 1: he wouldn't have even tired. He had been lying on
[8:46] Speaker 1: this bed, unable to walk for almost his whole life.
[8:49] Speaker 1: So to even attempt to stand up and walk, that
[8:53] Speaker 1: took a lot of faith. But here came the Pharisees
[8:58] Speaker 1: again with their pointing fingers and mean looks. When they
[9:03] Speaker 1: found out it was Jesus who had healed this man,
[9:05] Speaker 1: they once again started accusing him of breaking God's law
[9:10] Speaker 1: that said no work could be done on the Sabbath.
[9:14] Speaker 1: But these leaders did not understand that Jesus was God's
[9:17] Speaker 1: son and that he was equal to God. They didn't
[9:21] Speaker 1: know who they were talking to. They had faith. Jesus
[9:27] Speaker 1: told them that if they didn't believe what Moses said
[9:29] Speaker 1: about him, who John the Baptist said he was, or
[9:33] Speaker 1: even any of the miracles they had seen do with
[9:36] Speaker 1: their own eyes, why would they believe anything he said?
[9:40] Speaker 1: These leaders believed. were so used to giving honor and
[9:44] Speaker 1: attention to men on earth for all their great works
[9:47] Speaker 1: and all the laws they kept. They were so focused
[9:51] Speaker 1: on being perfect that they missed the presence of God.
[9:55] Speaker 1: It's as if their eyes were blinded. Let's be sure
[10:00] Speaker 1: to keep our eyes open wide today, looking for God
[10:04] Speaker 1: all around us in creation, the people we love, and
[10:07] Speaker 1: the way he takes.
[10:09] Speaker 3: Care of us.
[10:10] Speaker 1: Well, thanks for being here. I hope you'll return next
[10:13] Speaker 1: time to say goodbye to John the Baptist and hear
[10:16] Speaker 1: about what happened at King Herod's birthday party. didn't end
