[1:16] Speaker 3: Jehu becomes king. In our last story, Elisha predicts the
[1:22] Speaker 3: evil coming from Hazael. In this story, Jehu will be
[1:27] Speaker 3: anointed king and will destroy the family of Ahab, as
[1:32] Speaker 3: inspired by 2 Kings.
[1:39] Speaker 1: Hi, it's Julia Sabler. I'm so glad you're here for
[1:42] Speaker 1: the Kids Bible in a Year podcast. Today we're going
[1:46] Speaker 1: to hear about the new King Jehu and what his
[1:49] Speaker 1: friends did when they found out he was king. As usual,
[1:54] Speaker 1: God is taking care of everything and his perfect plan
[1:58] Speaker 1: is in place once again. Let's listen and see.
[2:05] Speaker 3: Because everyone in Ahab's royal family stopped worshiping Yahweh, the
[2:10] Speaker 3: one true God, God told Elisha to make General Jehu
[2:14] Speaker 3: the king of Israel. Elisha saw a young prophet and
[2:19] Speaker 3: told him, take this oil and find Jehu. He's going
[2:24] Speaker 3: to be with his friends, but you have to speak
[2:27] Speaker 3: to him alone. Pour this oil on his head and
[2:31] Speaker 3: make him king of Israel. When you finish, open the
[2:35] Speaker 3: door and run away. And without another minute to spare,
[2:39] Speaker 3: the young prophet started on his way to the city.
[2:43] Speaker 3: He asked everyone about where Jehu was. It took him
[2:47] Speaker 3: a while, but with enough time, he was able to
[2:49] Speaker 3: find out that Jehu was visiting important friends. just like
[2:54] Speaker 3: Elisha told him. When he got to the house, he
[2:57] Speaker 3: blew through the front door, shocking Jehu. The young prophet said,
[3:03] Speaker 3: I have a message for you. Jehu and the prophet
[3:06] Speaker 3: left the group of friends and went somewhere where no
[3:09] Speaker 3: one could see them. Then the prophet poured the oil
[3:12] Speaker 3: on Jehu's head and said, God wanted me to tell
[3:16] Speaker 3: you that you are the new king of Israel. But
[3:20] Speaker 3: before you can become king, You have to find a
[3:23] Speaker 3: way to destroy every man in Ahab's family. And you
[3:27] Speaker 3: have to destroy Jezebel too. Leave her in the streets
[3:31] Speaker 3: so the dogs can eat her. After saying this, the
[3:35] Speaker 3: young prophet did what Elisha told him to do and
[3:39] Speaker 3: ran away fast. When Jehu returned back to the house,
[3:43] Speaker 3: his friends asked him, What did that crazy prophet want?
[3:48] Speaker 3: Jehu said, You know how he talks. but his friends
[3:52] Speaker 3: could tell that there was a funny look on his face.
[3:55] Speaker 3: So they asked again, saying, No, really, please tell us.
[3:59] Speaker 3: Jehu finally gave in and said, The prophet said, I
[4:05] Speaker 3: anoint you king of Israel. Then they all spread their
[4:09] Speaker 3: coats on the floor, blew a trumpet, and shouted, Jehu
[4:14] Speaker 3: is the real king of Israel. While Joram's nephew came
[4:18] Speaker 3: to visit Joram, Jehu rode with his whole army towards
[4:22] Speaker 3: the palace. There were soldiers on the lookout, and they
[4:26] Speaker 3: saw the army that was racing towards them. Joram told
[4:29] Speaker 3: the guards, Send someone to talk to them, to see
[4:32] Speaker 3: if they come in peace. So they sent the first
[4:35] Speaker 3: messenger out, and when he got to Jehu, the messenger
[4:39] Speaker 3: asked him, The king wants to know if you're coming
[4:42] Speaker 3: in peace. Then Jehu said, What does the king know
[4:47] Speaker 3: about peace? Come and join my men. After this, the
[4:51] Speaker 3: messenger joined Jihyo's army. The lookout soldier told Joram, We
[4:57] Speaker 3: sent the messenger a while ago, but he's not back yet.
[5:00] Speaker 3: I think he joined their army. So the king sent
[5:04] Speaker 3: another messenger out. The messenger asked the same question. The
[5:09] Speaker 3: king wants to know if you're coming in peace. And
[5:12] Speaker 3: Jihyo gave the same answer. What does the king know
[5:16] Speaker 3: about peace? Come and join my men. And so the
[5:20] Speaker 3: second messenger joined his army too. The lookout soldier told Joram,
[5:26] Speaker 3: Second messenger has joined their army. I think I know
[5:30] Speaker 3: whose army this is though. You see that man in
[5:33] Speaker 3: the front chariot? He's driving like a madman. And the
[5:36] Speaker 3: only person I know who drives like that is Jihyo.
[5:40] Speaker 3: Joram was angry and he said, Go, get our chariots.
[5:45] Speaker 3: And both Joram and his nephew went to see what
[5:48] Speaker 3: was going on. When they reached Jihyo and his army,
[5:53] Speaker 3: Joram shouted, Jihyo, do you come in peace? And Jihyo
[5:58] Speaker 3: answered back, How can there be peace when your mother, Jezebel,
[6:02] Speaker 3: practices witchcraft and makes everyone worship idols? Then Joram finally
[6:08] Speaker 3: knew what was going on, so he turned around. Jihyo
[6:12] Speaker 3: shot an arrow that hit Joram in the shoulder, and
[6:16] Speaker 3: it ended him. Jihyo shouted, Take his body and throw
[6:20] Speaker 3: it in the land his father stole from Naboth. Then
[6:24] Speaker 3: he chased after Joram's nephew, and when he was close,
[6:28] Speaker 3: Jehu shot an arrow and ended him too. So in
[6:32] Speaker 3: one day, Jehu ended Ahab's son and his grandson just
[6:38] Speaker 3: like God had promised. Now the only one that was
[6:42] Speaker 3: left was the witch Jezebel.
[6:51] Speaker 1: Today's story is all about a new king named Jehu.
[6:54] Speaker 1: But before we get to his story, let's talk about
[6:57] Speaker 1: what went wrong with Ahab's family. As we open today's story, Joram,
[7:03] Speaker 1: Ahab's son, is now king over Israel. But in this
[7:06] Speaker 1: chapter of 2 Kings, the Bible tells us that Ahab's
[7:10] Speaker 1: entire family had stopped worshiping the one true God. Regardless
[7:16] Speaker 1: of what had happened in the past, They had turned
[7:19] Speaker 1: their backs on God and decided to do things their
[7:22] Speaker 1: own way. That's something we've heard about a lot in
[7:27] Speaker 1: these stories from the Bible. And I know you know
[7:31] Speaker 1: how that turns out. Because Ahab's family had turned wicked
[7:36] Speaker 1: and refused to follow God, God told Elisha that he
[7:40] Speaker 1: wanted a general named Jehu to be the new king.
[7:45] Speaker 1: But instead of taking care of this assignment alone, Elisha
[7:50] Speaker 1: found a younger prophet, perhaps someone he was training, and
[7:54] Speaker 1: asked him to do it. Elisha gave this young prophet
[7:59] Speaker 1: exact instructions on finding Jehu, getting along with him, telling
[8:04] Speaker 1: him what God had said, and anointing his head with oil.
[8:09] Speaker 1: And like any other faithful prophet, he did just as
[8:13] Speaker 1: Elisha said. But there was one more thing. The family
[8:17] Speaker 1: of Ahab would have to be destroyed because they disobeyed God.
[8:23] Speaker 1: Little did Jehu know that this very day his whole
[8:27] Speaker 1: life was going to change. He was going to find
[8:31] Speaker 1: out that he was the next king of Israel and
[8:34] Speaker 1: he was going to have a big job ahead of him.
[8:39] Speaker 1: So after the young prophet took Jehu away, gave him
[8:43] Speaker 1: the message, and anointed him king, Jehu returned to his friends.
[8:48] Speaker 1: And I guess you could say they were very curious
[8:51] Speaker 1: about what was going on. When they asked him what happened,
[8:55] Speaker 1: he tried to keep it a secret when they asked
[8:57] Speaker 1: him what happened. Now, have you ever tried to keep
[9:02] Speaker 1: a secret from a good friend? It's not easy to do.
[9:07] Speaker 1: They kept on asking, so Jehu eventually told his friends
[9:11] Speaker 1: what the young prophet had said and how he was
[9:14] Speaker 1: soon to become king. And what happens next tells us
[9:19] Speaker 1: everything we need to know about this Jehu and his character.
[9:24] Speaker 1: Do you know how his friends responded? They cheered, yelled, celebrated,
[9:30] Speaker 1: and partied. They were so happy to know that Jehu
[9:34] Speaker 1: would be the new king. The Bible says they even
[9:37] Speaker 1: took off their coats and spread them on the ground,
[9:41] Speaker 1: treating him like royalty. This reminds me of a verse
[9:45] Speaker 1: in Proverbs 29 too. Remember who wrote this book? The
[9:50] Speaker 1: wisest man who ever lived. The verse says that when
[9:54] Speaker 1: things are going well for a righteous person, people rejoice.
[9:59] Speaker 1: But Okay. Okay. So as Jehu rode toward the palace,
[10:22] Speaker 1: Joram started getting nervous. He sent one messenger who decided
[10:28] Speaker 1: to jump ship and join Jehu's army. And then it
[10:32] Speaker 1: happened again with a second messenger. As the story comes
[10:37] Speaker 1: to a close, Ahab's son and grandson are killed and
[10:41] Speaker 1: Jehu takes the throne. I wonder what kind of king
[10:44] Speaker 1: he will be. What do you think? Well, that's all
[10:47] Speaker 1: for today. Thanks for listening. And remember, the Bible is
[10:52] Speaker 1: the best story ever told. It's God's story to you.
