[1:30] Speaker 3: Jehoshaphat and Ahab. In our last story, we learned about
[1:35] Speaker 3: Naboth's vineyard. In this story, we return to the succession
[1:40] Speaker 3: of kings in Israel and Judah and learn about Jehoshaphat
[1:46] Speaker 3: as inspired by 1 Kings and 2 Chronicles.
[1:53] Speaker 1: Hi there, it's Joya Sadler with the Kids Bible in
[1:56] Speaker 1: a Year podcast. I'm so happy you're here. Today we
[2:00] Speaker 1: hear about how King Ahab thought he could outsmart God,
[2:04] Speaker 1: but no one outsmarts God. Let's jump in and hear
[2:10] Speaker 1: the whole story.
[2:14] Speaker 3: Jehoshaphat, the son of Asa, became king over Judah after
[2:19] Speaker 3: his father died. The Lord blessed Jehoshaphat because he followed
[2:23] Speaker 3: the ways of King David. Jehoshaphat protected the nation even more.
[2:29] Speaker 3: by setting up troops in all of the cities of
[2:31] Speaker 3: Judah and set pillars in the towns that his father captured.
[2:36] Speaker 3: The fear of the Lord came upon all of the
[2:38] Speaker 3: territories that surrounded Judah, and not one territory waged war.
[2:44] Speaker 1: With the king of Judah.
[2:46] Speaker 3: Jehoshaphat wanted to build an alliance with the king of Israel.
[2:51] Speaker 3: He decided to arrange a marriage between his son and
[2:55] Speaker 3: the daughter of the king of Israel. Jehoshaphat traveled down
[2:59] Speaker 3: to meet Ahab, the king of Israel, to make this
[3:02] Speaker 3: alliance an even stronger one. Ahab said to Jehoshaphat, I
[3:07] Speaker 3: have already informed my servants of this, but Ramoth-Gilead is
[3:11] Speaker 3: our territory, and we are not doing anything about it.
[3:16] Speaker 3: What do you think about going to battle with me
[3:18] Speaker 3: for Ramoth-Gilead? Jehoshaphat responded, I am with you on this one,
[3:24] Speaker 3: as your people are my people. But first, We need
[3:27] Speaker 3: to hear the word of the Lord. So the king
[3:30] Speaker 3: of Israel gathered about 400 prophets together and asked, Should
[3:35] Speaker 3: we go to battle against Ramoth-Gilead? The prophets said to Ahab,
[3:41] Speaker 3: Go battle Ramoth-Gilead, and the Lord will give you the land.
[3:45] Speaker 3: Jehoshaphat was not at peace with this word from the
[3:48] Speaker 3: prophets and asked Ahab, Is there a prophet around that
[3:53] Speaker 3: is of the Lord? Ahab said, Well, there is one prophet, Micaiah,
[3:59] Speaker 3: but I do not like hearing from him because he
[4:02] Speaker 3: is always saying bad things to me. Jehoshaphat knew that
[4:07] Speaker 3: they had to ask for the word of the Lord
[4:09] Speaker 3: from Micaiah. So the king of Israel sent out one
[4:13] Speaker 3: of his officials to bring Micaiah to them. When the
[4:17] Speaker 3: officials went out looking for Micaiah, the kings were hearing
[4:21] Speaker 3: more prophecies from the 400 prophets with detailed instructions on
[4:26] Speaker 3: how to take over Ramoth-Gilead. When the official found Micaiah,
[4:30] Speaker 3: he said, Listen up. All of the other prophets are
[4:34] Speaker 3: speaking favorably to the king, so it would be wise
[4:37] Speaker 3: to make your word match theirs. But Micaiah knew God
[4:41] Speaker 3: and said, As long as the Lord lives, I will
[4:45] Speaker 3: speak what he tells me to speak. When Micaiah was
[4:49] Speaker 3: in the presence of the king, the king asked him, So,
[4:54] Speaker 3: Do you think we should go to battle for Ramoth-Gilead? Yeah,
[4:59] Speaker 3: go ahead and go to war and it will be
[5:01] Speaker 3: an easy win, he said. This was unusual for Micaiah
[5:05] Speaker 3: to say such a thing. So the king said to him, Micaiah,
[5:10] Speaker 3: please tell me the truth on what the Lord has spoken.
[5:16] Speaker 3: Micaiah then said, I see the people of Israel scattered
[5:21] Speaker 3: all over the mountains like sheep without a shepherd. Ahab
[5:25] Speaker 3: frustratingly said to Jehoshaphat, I told you, Micaiah never has
[5:29] Speaker 3: anything good to.
[5:30] Speaker 2: Say to me.
[5:31] Speaker 3: Micaiah spoke again. I saw the Lord sitting on his
[5:35] Speaker 3: throne and all of heaven standing by him. And the
[5:40] Speaker 3: Lord is asking, How can I get Ahab to go
[5:43] Speaker 3: to Ramoth Gilead? A spirit in heaven suggested that he
[5:48] Speaker 3: would go out as a lying spirit in the mouth
[5:51] Speaker 3: of his prophets. Micaiah said, The Lord has put a
[5:55] Speaker 3: lying spirit in the mouth of your prophets, because doom
[5:59] Speaker 3: will come upon you. One of Micaiah's prophets slapped Micaiah
[6:04] Speaker 3: across the face, and Ahab commanded to have Micaiah thrown
[6:08] Speaker 3: into prison. Micaiah cried out, Listen to me. If this
[6:13] Speaker 3: man comes back safe, then I am not a prophet
[6:16] Speaker 3: of the Lord. Ahab and Jehoshaphat both went to battle.
[6:22] Speaker 3: Ahab told Jehoshaphat to put on fine clothes and I
[6:25] Speaker 3: will disguise myself as a regular soldier. The king of
[6:29] Speaker 3: Aram commanded his soldiers to kill only Ahab. Jehoshaphat took
[6:35] Speaker 3: on the appearance of Ahab when he was on a chariot,
[6:38] Speaker 3: but as he got closer, the soldiers held back from
[6:41] Speaker 3: killing him because it was not the king of Israel.
[6:45] Speaker 3: There was a man that had a bow and shot
[6:48] Speaker 3: a random arrow in the air and it struck Ahab
[6:51] Speaker 3: in the joint of his armor, causing him to bleed.
[6:55] Speaker 3: Ahab cried out, Get me out of here! I am wounded!
[6:59] Speaker 3: Ahab watched the rest of the battle as he was
[7:01] Speaker 3: propped up in his chariot, and he died as the
[7:05] Speaker 3: evening came. Ahab's body was brought to Samaria to be buried,
[7:10] Speaker 3: and his chariot was washed in the pool Samaria. The
[7:15] Speaker 3: dogs licked up his blood just as the Lord had said.
[7:26] Speaker 1: Oh boy, there sure was a lot of pretending and
[7:28] Speaker 1: lying in today's story, wasn't there? Sadly, that was pretty
[7:33] Speaker 1: normal for King Ahab. Do you remember when he told
[7:37] Speaker 1: everyone to forget about God and worship a fake god
[7:41] Speaker 1: named Baal instead? Or when he let his wife kill
[7:46] Speaker 1: his neighbor Naboth so he could steal his vineyard? The
[7:51] Speaker 1: Bible says King Ahab was the worst of the worst.
[7:54] Speaker 1: of all the kings of Israel. That's pretty bad. And
[7:59] Speaker 1: while nobody today is as bad as King Ahab, everybody
[8:03] Speaker 1: chooses to do bad things, like lie or steal sometimes.
[8:09] Speaker 1: When you do bad things, do your parents say, oh well,
[8:12] Speaker 1: it doesn't matter, la-di-da?
[8:15] Speaker 3: No.
[8:16] Speaker 1: Loving parents help you learn to become better by disciplining you.
[8:22] Speaker 1: Maybe they put you in time out, Or take away
[8:25] Speaker 1: some privileges. That discipline helps you to make better choices
[8:30] Speaker 1: the next time you feel tempted to sin. Of course,
[8:36] Speaker 1: the best reason not to sin is because you don't
[8:38] Speaker 1: want to make God or your parents sad. But you
[8:41] Speaker 1: also don't want to get punished. Now, discipline can teach
[8:46] Speaker 1: you to be better. And watching others can teach you
[8:49] Speaker 1: to be better too. If your brother or sister disobeys
[8:53] Speaker 1: and gets disciplined, you can see it and be smart
[8:57] Speaker 1: enough to say, no, no way, not me. I'm not
[9:00] Speaker 1: going to do that. That's how God tried to help
[9:04] Speaker 1: the Israelites to stop doing bad things by disciplining King
[9:08] Speaker 1: Ahab for all the terrible, horrible, wicked things he did.
[9:13] Speaker 1: He hoped the people would be wise enough to say,
[9:15] Speaker 1: no way, not for me. I'm not going to do that.
[9:20] Speaker 1: But do you remember what happened? Proud King Ahab wanted
[9:25] Speaker 1: to take back some land he'd lost, but he needed help.
[9:30] Speaker 1: So he asked good King Jehoshaphat from Judah, Will you
[9:35] Speaker 1: fight with me to get this land back? King Jehoshaphat said,
[9:40] Speaker 1: I'm happy to help, but before I can say yes,
[9:42] Speaker 1: we should ask God, Are there any prophets around? This
[9:47] Speaker 1: is when all the lying and pretending starts. You see,
[9:51] Speaker 1: there were 400 liars in King Ahab's court pretending to
[9:55] Speaker 1: be prophets. They weren't real prophets because they didn't listen
[10:00] Speaker 1: to God. They made up lies and told King Ahab
[10:03] Speaker 1: what he wanted to hear. King Jehoshaphat could tell. He said, no,
[10:09] Speaker 1: I mean a real prophet of the Lord. So King
[10:15] Speaker 1: Ahab called Micah. that he wasn't happy because Micah always
[10:19] Speaker 1: told the truth. And that usually meant bad news for
[10:23] Speaker 1: wicked King Ahab. So when Micah showed up, he told
[10:29] Speaker 1: the king the truth. He said, King Ahab was the
[10:32] Speaker 1: biggest pretender of all. He ignored Micah and went into
[10:34] Speaker 1: battle anyway. But he dressed like a soldier, not a king,
[10:50] Speaker 1: to trick the enemy. He thought he could outsmart God.
[10:55] Speaker 1: But no one outsmarts God. Even though the other army
[11:00] Speaker 1: didn't recognize King Ahab, one soldier shot an arrow up, up,
[11:06] Speaker 1: up into the sky just for fun. And that arrow
[11:09] Speaker 1: fell down, down, down, right into a hole in Ahab's armor.
[11:15] Speaker 1: Just like God said, Ahab died in that battle. You see,
[11:20] Speaker 1: King Ahab showed all the people of Israel what you
[11:23] Speaker 1: should not do and not become. And when you see
[11:28] Speaker 1: people doing things you shouldn't do, do you know what
[11:32] Speaker 1: to say? Say, no way, not me, I'm not going
[11:37] Speaker 1: to go do that. I'm so happy you joined me today.
[11:41] Speaker 1: Come back next time to find out how King Jehoshaphat
[11:44] Speaker 1: showed his people in Judah what they should do and
[11:48] Speaker 1: how God responded when he did. Remember, the Bible is
[11:53] Speaker 1: the best story ever told. It's God's story to you.
