Afterward, Jesus, led by the Spirit, spends 40 days fasting in the wilderness, where He is tempted by the Devil. [1:24] Speaker 3: From the water to the wilderness. In our last story,
[1:29] Speaker 3: we learned about Jesus growing up, but also growing in wisdom,
[1:34] Speaker 3: and that he is about his Father's work. In this story,
[1:38] Speaker 3: we return to John the Baptist, who will baptize and
[1:42] Speaker 3: proclaim Jesus as the promised Messiah. And then, Jesus will
[1:46] Speaker 3: be led by the Spirit in the wilderness to be tested,
[1:50] Speaker 3: as inspired by the Gospels.
[1:56] Speaker 1: Hi there, it's Julianne Thompson, guest hosting for Julia Jeffress
[1:59] Speaker 1: Sadler with the Kids Bible in Ear podcast. I am
[2:02] Speaker 1: so happy you're here. Today we get to know how
[2:05] Speaker 1: Jesus faced an old enemy out in the wilderness and
[2:09] Speaker 1: what he did to win. What's going to happen? Well,
[2:13] Speaker 1: let's jump in and find out.
[2:17] Speaker 3: God led John into the wilderness. Away from his family
[2:21] Speaker 3: and friends, he went out and listened for God. He
[2:24] Speaker 3: lived a modest life with clothes made of camel's hair.
[2:28] Speaker 3: His diet consisted of locusts and wild honey. It was
[2:32] Speaker 3: a simple life. Every day he would wake up and
[2:35] Speaker 3: begin to preach to all those that would listen. His
[2:39] Speaker 3: message was a simple one. Repent of sin and turn
[2:42] Speaker 3: towards God, away from their wicked acts. When people would
[2:47] Speaker 3: come forward asking about how to do this, he would
[2:50] Speaker 3: give them instructions and baptize them. One morning, as he
[2:55] Speaker 3: was preaching, some leaders from the temple came down to him.
[2:59] Speaker 3: Who are you baptizing? Are you the Messiah? John was
[3:04] Speaker 3: in shock that they could even compare him to the Messiah.
[3:07] Speaker 3: He replied, I am not. I prepare the way for
[3:11] Speaker 3: the Messiah. He will come after me. I am nothing
[3:15] Speaker 3: before he who is to come. The day after this exchange,
[3:19] Speaker 3: John was baptizing people down by the Jordan River. Someone
[3:23] Speaker 3: caught his eye as he was looking around at the
[3:25] Speaker 3: crowd between the baptisms.
[3:28] Speaker 2: It was Jesus.
[3:30] Speaker 3: He announced, Behold, the Lamb of God who takes the
[3:34] Speaker 3: sins of the world, the Son of God. Jesus approached
[3:39] Speaker 3: him as the crowd parted for him. He said to John,
[3:42] Speaker 3: Please baptize me. This shocked John. He was in no
[3:47] Speaker 3: place to baptize the Son of God. He protested. But
[3:52] Speaker 3: Jesus insisted. As he baptized Jesus in front of the crowd,
[3:56] Speaker 3: the sky opened and the Holy Spirit came down like
[3:59] Speaker 3: a dove and rested on Jesus' shoulder. A voice spoke,
[4:04] Speaker 3: You are my son. I am proud of you. The
[4:09] Speaker 3: people stood in amazement at what just happened. Jesus got
[4:14] Speaker 3: up and began to follow the Holy Spirit into the wilderness.
[4:18] Speaker 3: While there, He meditated and prayed day and night for
[4:22] Speaker 3: 40 days while he was fasting. He was starving and
[4:26] Speaker 3: exhausted at the end of the 40 days. Suddenly, he
[4:31] Speaker 3: found himself near the temple. A voice spoke to him
[4:34] Speaker 3: and said, If you are the Son of God, turn
[4:38] Speaker 3: these stones into bread. You are starving and must be
[4:42] Speaker 3: quite hungry. Jesus realized that this must be the voice
[4:48] Speaker 3: of the devil, And he responded, God's word says, man
[4:53] Speaker 3: does not live by bread alone, but from the words
[4:57] Speaker 3: from the mouth of God. Next, he found himself on
[5:02] Speaker 3: the highest point of the temple's wall in Jerusalem. It
[5:05] Speaker 3: was a beautiful view from the city of David. As
[5:08] Speaker 3: he looked down, he saw that it was a far
[5:11] Speaker 3: drop with rocks at the bottom. So he made sure
[5:14] Speaker 3: he kept his balance and did not misstep. The voice
[5:18] Speaker 3: spoke up again. If you are God's son, jump. His
[5:23] Speaker 3: word says that angels will take care of you. They
[5:26] Speaker 3: will stop you from falling. It won't hurt a bit.
[5:30] Speaker 3: Jesus thought and understood that the devil did just use scripture.
[5:35] Speaker 3: But Jesus responded, This is true, but God's word also says,
[5:41] Speaker 3: Do not test God. Once again, Jesus found himself someplace else.
[5:47] Speaker 3: This time, on top of a very tall mountain. From there,
[5:52] Speaker 3: all the kingdoms of the earth and their glory appeared
[5:55] Speaker 3: before Jesus. The devil once again spoke to Jesus. I
[6:01] Speaker 3: will give you all you can see. Just bow down
[6:05] Speaker 3: and worship me. Jesus turned and rebuked the devil, calling
[6:09] Speaker 3: him by name. Satan, leave me. God's word is clear
[6:15] Speaker 3: that we are to worship no other, The only one
[6:19] Speaker 3: that we serve is God himself. Satan then left Jesus.
[6:26] Speaker 3: Exhausted and hungry, angels came down and cared for Jesus
[6:31] Speaker 3: and his needs.
[6:37] Speaker 1: Wow, today we learned even more how Jesus is like
[6:41] Speaker 1: his father, God, and why he understands us so well.
[6:46] Speaker 1: Do you remember what happened? Jesus' cousin John was preaching
[6:50] Speaker 1: out in the desert. John wore clothes made out of
[6:53] Speaker 1: camel skin and ate funny bugs called locusts. Dipped in honey?
[6:58] Speaker 3: Ew!
[7:00] Speaker 1: How would you like a big bowl of honey bugs
[7:02] Speaker 1: for breakfast? Yuck! But John didn't care about his food.
[7:07] Speaker 1: He cared about helping people see the truth. John told
[7:11] Speaker 1: everybody they needed to clean up their lives. So he
[7:14] Speaker 1: was washing or baptizing them in the Jordan River. You see,
[7:18] Speaker 1: just like Noah's flood was a picture of God washing
[7:21] Speaker 1: the earth clean of sin, John's baptism was a picture
[7:25] Speaker 1: of God washing hearts clean of sin. Baptism didn't actually
[7:30] Speaker 1: take anyone's sin away. It was just a way people
[7:33] Speaker 1: could show everyone that they loved God and would follow
[7:37] Speaker 1: him no matter what. So when Jesus asked John to
[7:40] Speaker 1: baptize him, he was telling everyone that he loved God
[7:44] Speaker 1: and would follow him no matter what. And do you
[7:48] Speaker 1: remember what happened? After Jesus was baptized, the Holy Spirit
[7:52] Speaker 1: fell down like a dove and landed on him. Then
[7:56] Speaker 1: God told everyone that Jesus was his son and he
[8:00] Speaker 1: loved him right back, no matter what.
[8:03] Speaker 3: It was awesome.
[8:05] Speaker 1: But afterward, the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness
[8:09] Speaker 1: and there God's enemy died. The devil was waiting. He
[8:14] Speaker 1: understood more than anyone.
[8:16] Speaker 2: Who Jesus really was.
[8:18] Speaker 1: And he knew that if he could get Jesus to sin,
[8:21] Speaker 1: he could hurt God. So he planned to use the
[8:24] Speaker 1: same trick he had been using since the Garden of
[8:28] Speaker 1: Eden to get people to sin. Temptation. What's temptation? It's
[8:33] Speaker 1: when you really want to do something that would make
[8:36] Speaker 1: God sad. Like lying or hurting someone's feelings. Or taking
[8:41] Speaker 1: something that isn't yours. But wanting to do those things
[8:46] Speaker 1: and actually doing those things aren't the same thing. Wanting
[8:51] Speaker 1: to sin isn't sin. It's temptation. Taking action on that
[8:56] Speaker 1: temptation is sinning. And that's how the devil tries to
[9:00] Speaker 1: trick you. But Jesus showed us the way out of
[9:04] Speaker 1: that trick. You see, even though Jesus was God, he
[9:08] Speaker 1: was also a person. like you and me. And God's
[9:12] Speaker 1: enemy came to tempt him when Jesus was tired and
[9:15] Speaker 1: hungry and maybe even a little sunburned. That's because it's
[9:20] Speaker 1: harder to say no when you're tired and hungry and
[9:24] Speaker 1: maybe a little sunburned. But Jesus knew the enemy attacks
[9:28] Speaker 1: when you're feeling weak. So he was ready. He said
[9:32] Speaker 1: no to temptation. And here's how. First, Jesus remembered God's word.
[9:39] Speaker 1: He was hungry, but more than food, he cared about
[9:43] Speaker 1: helping people see the truth. So even though his body
[9:47] Speaker 1: wanted to say yes to the devil's temptation, his mind
[9:51] Speaker 1: went back to where God said, true strength comes from within.
[9:56] Speaker 1: And he said no to the first temptation. second he
[10:01] Speaker 1: remembered who God is the devil tempted Jesus with everything
[10:06] Speaker 1: people usually want more than anything power popularity and money
[10:11] Speaker 1: if he could just turn his back on God but
[10:14] Speaker 1: Jesus knew nothing on earth could be better than God
[10:18] Speaker 1: So he said no to the second temptation. Third, he
[10:22] Speaker 1: knew how God wanted him to act. Jesus knew that
[10:26] Speaker 1: he knew that he loved God and would follow him
[10:30] Speaker 1: no matter what. So when the devil wanted him to
[10:33] Speaker 1: act differently, he said no to the third temptation. And
[10:38] Speaker 1: I am so glad he did. Because when you're tempted
[10:41] Speaker 1: to do something that makes God sad, especially if you're
[10:45] Speaker 1: tired or hungry or even a little sunburned, you can
[10:49] Speaker 1: remember that Jesus knows how you feel. And you can
[10:53] Speaker 1: remember how he said no by knowing God's word. Knowing
[10:58] Speaker 1: God is greater than anything else and knowing how God
[11:01] Speaker 1: wants you to act. And you'll know that you know
[11:05] Speaker 1: God loves you and you can follow him no matter what.
