[1:21] Speaker 2: Captain of 50. In our last story... we learned that
[1:26] Speaker 2: Jehoshaphat decided to seek the Lord before battle, and the
[1:29] Speaker 2: Lord helped set ambushes, which led to a victory for Israel.
[1:34] Speaker 2: But Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, also made a pact with Ahaziah,
[1:39] Speaker 2: king of Israel, which the Lord was not pleased with.
[1:44] Speaker 2: In this story, we will learn about Ahaziah and what
[1:47] Speaker 2: happened when he sought false gods. As inspired by 2 Kings.
[1:57] Speaker 1: Well, hi, it's Julia Sadler here with the Kids Bible
[2:00] Speaker 1: New Year podcast. I'm so glad you're here today. In
[2:03] Speaker 1: this story, we hear what happened to King Ahaziah and
[2:07] Speaker 1: his men when they didn't think it was necessary to
[2:10] Speaker 1: remember all the Lord had done for them. They thought
[2:14] Speaker 1: any old God would do when they were in trouble.
[2:18] Speaker 1: And boy, were they wrong. Let's find out what happened.
[2:25] Speaker 2: Moab rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahab. Ahaziah
[2:30] Speaker 2: then fell through the balcony of his house in Samaria
[2:33] Speaker 2: and was seriously injured. Ahaziah sent out messengers to ask Beelzebub,
[2:39] Speaker 2: the god of Ekron, Am I going to recover from
[2:42] Speaker 2: this accident? The angel of the Lord said to Elijah,
[2:47] Speaker 2: Stop the messengers of Ahaziah and ask them, Why are
[2:52] Speaker 2: you consulting the god of Ekron? When there is a
[2:55] Speaker 2: God in Israel, and the Lord has already told me,
[2:59] Speaker 2: Ahaziah will not recover from his fall, but he shall die.
[3:04] Speaker 2: The messengers went back. Ahaziah asked, Why are you back
[3:08] Speaker 2: so soon? The messengers told Ahaziah all that Elijah had said.
[3:13] Speaker 2: Ahaziah wondered who this man was. What did he look like?
[3:18] Speaker 2: He was hairy and had a leather belt around his waist.
[3:22] Speaker 3: That's Elijah.
[3:24] Speaker 2: Ahaziah then sent out fifty soldiers to find Elijah. When
[3:29] Speaker 2: they found Elijah, he was sitting at the top of
[3:32] Speaker 2: a hill. The captain said to Elijah, Elijah, man of God,
[3:37] Speaker 2: the king has asked you to come down from that hill.
[3:39] Speaker 2: If I am a man of God, then fire will
[3:43] Speaker 2: come down from heaven and burn you up and your
[3:46] Speaker 2: fifty men. Fire poured out of the sky and took
[3:50] Speaker 2: down the men just as Elijah had said. Ahaziah then
[3:54] Speaker 2: sent out another captain and fifty men to get Elijah.
[3:58] Speaker 2: Second captain said to Elijah, Come down. Elijah answered, If
[4:04] Speaker 2: I am a man of God, then fire will come
[4:06] Speaker 2: down from heaven and burn up you and your fifty men.
[4:11] Speaker 2: Then the fire of God came down again from heaven
[4:14] Speaker 2: and burned up the men. Ahaziah then sent out another
[4:18] Speaker 2: captain and fifty soldiers to get Elijah. The third captain
[4:23] Speaker 2: of the fifty kneeled down in front of Elijah and said,
[4:27] Speaker 2: Man of God, please have mercy on us and let
[4:31] Speaker 2: our lives be precious in your sight. I know that
[4:35] Speaker 2: fire burned up the last men that were here, but please,
[4:38] Speaker 2: man of God, let my life be precious in your sight.
[4:44] Speaker 2: The angel of the Lord told Elijah, You are safe.
[4:48] Speaker 2: Go down with him to see the king. When Elijah
[4:51] Speaker 2: saw Ahaziah, he said, You have sent out messengers to Beelzebub.
[4:57] Speaker 2: You should have asked me first, but since you didn't
[5:00] Speaker 2: ask the God of Israel, you shall surely die. Ahaziah
[5:05] Speaker 2: died just as the Lord had said. Ahaziah didn't have
[5:09] Speaker 2: any children, so his brother Joram became king of Israel.
[5:20] Speaker 1: Today we learned about Ahaziah, another king of Israel. Was
[5:24] Speaker 1: he a good king or an evil king? That's right,
[5:28] Speaker 1: Ahaziah was a bad king. How do we know? Well,
[5:33] Speaker 1: Ahaziah had grown up in Israel, where everyone knew about God.
[5:38] Speaker 1: Ever since the Israelites were about your age, they'd heard
[5:42] Speaker 1: the beautiful story of God's relationship with their people. They
[5:47] Speaker 1: knew about God's promise to Abraham to give him a big, big,
[5:51] Speaker 1: big family and a special home. And they knew about
[5:56] Speaker 1: Abraham's son Isaac and his grandson Jacob and how Jacob
[6:01] Speaker 1: took all his children down to Egypt. And they knew
[6:05] Speaker 1: that Abraham's great, great, great grandchildren who had grown into
[6:11] Speaker 1: a big, big, big family became slaves while they were
[6:16] Speaker 1: down there. But God used Moses to lead the Israelites
[6:20] Speaker 1: through the Red Sea and out of Egypt. They knew
[6:24] Speaker 1: God used Joshua to conquer the promised land so the
[6:29] Speaker 1: Israelites could live in the special home God had promised Abraham.
[6:34] Speaker 1: The Israelites knew King David was a good king who
[6:38] Speaker 1: loved God and wrote beautiful songs about him. And they
[6:42] Speaker 1: knew God had filled King Solomon with wisdom so that
[6:47] Speaker 1: Israel was once one of the happiest kingdoms there ever was.
[6:52] Speaker 1: More than anything, the Israelites knew God keeps his promises.
[6:57] Speaker 1: King Ahaziah knew all these stories too, but he'd also
[7:03] Speaker 1: heard stories about a false god named Baal. Baal didn't
[7:08] Speaker 1: have any beautiful stories about making promises and keeping them,
[7:12] Speaker 1: And he'd never rescued anyone. In fact, to follow Baal,
[7:17] Speaker 1: you had to do mean, terrible, awful things. On top
[7:21] Speaker 1: of it, he wasn't even real. Well, one day, King
[7:25] Speaker 1: Ahaziah was walking around on his balcony. And whoops, he
[7:31] Speaker 1: slipped and fell a long, long way to the ground below. Ouch. Now,
[7:37] Speaker 1: if you were King Ahaziah and you were hurt, Would
[7:41] Speaker 1: you want help from Israel's God, who's proven to be trustworthy?
[7:46] Speaker 1: The God who keeps his promises? Or would you want
[7:49] Speaker 1: help from Baal, the God who was mean and asked
[7:52] Speaker 1: you to do terrible things, and who wasn't even real? Right,
[7:57] Speaker 1: I would want help from the Lord. But King Ahaziah
[8:01] Speaker 1: did not. He didn't love God with his heart. He
[8:05] Speaker 1: had done some very bad things, so he wanted help
[8:09] Speaker 1: from a very bad God, who wasn't even real. So
[8:13] Speaker 1: he sent his servants to go ask Baal, not God,
[8:17] Speaker 1: if he would survive his fall. Well, the angel of
[8:21] Speaker 1: the Lord sent Elijah to stop the king's servants. Elijah
[8:26] Speaker 1: said to them, Ask the king. Is it because there's
[8:30] Speaker 1: no God in Israel that you go to inquire of Beelzebub,
[8:35] Speaker 1: the God of Ekron? You see, Elijah knew that King
[8:39] Speaker 1: Ahaziah knew that he should obey God. And now, King
[8:44] Speaker 1: Ahaziah knew that Elijah knew that God knew that King
[8:49] Speaker 1: Ahaziah knew that he should obey God. Everybody knew. But
[8:55] Speaker 1: even with all that knowing... King Ahaziah didn't want to
[8:59] Speaker 1: obey God, and so God didn't let him get better. Now,
[9:04] Speaker 1: what does that story have to do with you and me?
[9:07] Speaker 1: I'm sad to say there are a lot of people
[9:10] Speaker 1: who are just like King Ahaziah today. They know all
[9:14] Speaker 1: the stories about God. Maybe they go to church or
[9:18] Speaker 1: to Sunday school, but they don't love God with all
[9:20] Speaker 1: their heart. When trouble comes or they get hurt, They
[9:25] Speaker 1: turn to gods who aren't even real for help, not
[9:29] Speaker 1: to the Lord. But Jesus said the most important thing
[9:33] Speaker 1: you can do is to love God with all your heart, mind, soul,
[9:38] Speaker 1: and strength. When you do, you start seeing God's faithfulness everywhere.
[9:44] Speaker 1: And you see that God is writing your life into
[9:47] Speaker 1: a beautiful story where he keeps his promises and gives
[9:51] Speaker 1: you a special home with him too. I'm so happy
[9:55] Speaker 1: you joined me today. Come back next time to find
[9:58] Speaker 1: out what happens when it was time for Elijah to
[10:02] Speaker 1: say goodbye. Remember, the Bible is the best story ever told.
