[1:16] Speaker 2: The Sin of King Jeroboam In our last story, we
[1:21] Speaker 2: learned how Solomon's kingdom was split with ten tribes in
[1:25] Speaker 2: the north and two tribes in the south. In this story,
[1:30] Speaker 2: We will learn about Jeroboam's sin as inspired by 1 Kings.
[1:38] Speaker 1: Hi, it's Joya Sadler. Thanks for jumping in for the
[1:41] Speaker 1: Kids Bible in a Year podcast. Today we meet a
[1:45] Speaker 1: man with no name, kind of, and learn some lessons
[1:50] Speaker 1: about the type of person God can use to do
[1:53] Speaker 1: great things. Let's listen in.
[1:59] Speaker 2: Jeroboam was the king of Israel. He wanted his people
[2:04] Speaker 2: to worship in the kingdom of Israel instead of going
[2:07] Speaker 2: to Jerusalem to offer sacrifices. He was worried that his
[2:12] Speaker 2: people would give their loyalty to Rehoboam, the king of Judah.
[2:17] Speaker 2: He was afraid that they would kill him and rejoin
[2:20] Speaker 2: the kingdom of Judah because they were so loyal to
[2:23] Speaker 2: the family of David. This was a big problem for
[2:27] Speaker 2: King Jeroboam. He asked for advice because he did not
[2:31] Speaker 2: know what to do. He decided to make two golden
[2:35] Speaker 2: calves for his people to worship. He said to his people,
[2:39] Speaker 2: Don't go to Jerusalem to worship. You can worship right here.
[2:43] Speaker 2: Here are the gods who rescued you from Egypt. He
[2:46] Speaker 2: put one calf in a town called Bethel and the
[2:50] Speaker 2: other in a town called Dan. This became a sin
[2:54] Speaker 2: because people came to worship the one at Bethel. and
[2:57] Speaker 2: went as far as Dan to worship the other. King
[3:01] Speaker 2: Jeroboam built places for the people to worship these idols
[3:05] Speaker 2: and let anyone become a priest. Then he decided to
[3:09] Speaker 2: make a festival just like the one in Judah. Now
[3:13] Speaker 2: his people would not go to Jerusalem to celebrate. They
[3:17] Speaker 2: could celebrate in Bethel and Dan. At the festival, King
[3:22] Speaker 2: Jeroboam was standing by the altar that he built for
[3:25] Speaker 2: the golden calves, when a man of God came from
[3:28] Speaker 2: Judah to Bethel. The man of God shouted, Altar! Altar!
[3:34] Speaker 2: This is what the Lord says to you. A son
[3:38] Speaker 2: will be born in the family of David, and his
[3:41] Speaker 2: name will be Josiah. On you he will sacrifice the
[3:46] Speaker 2: priests who make offerings here. Then the man of God
[3:50] Speaker 2: gave the people a sign from God. He said, This
[3:55] Speaker 2: is the sign that the Lord gave me. The altar
[3:58] Speaker 2: will split apart and the ashes will be poured on
[4:01] Speaker 2: the ground. King Jeroboam did not like what he heard,
[4:06] Speaker 2: so he reached out his hand and yelled for the
[4:09] Speaker 2: man to be stopped. When he did this, his hand
[4:12] Speaker 2: got stuck and he could not move it. The altar
[4:16] Speaker 2: split apart and the ashes were poured out on the ground.
[4:21] Speaker 2: King Jeroboam begged the man of God, to pray to
[4:25] Speaker 2: the Lord and ask God to heal his arm. So
[4:29] Speaker 2: the man of God prayed, and his arm was healed.
[4:33] Speaker 2: The man of God was invited to come to King
[4:36] Speaker 2: Jeroboam's palace to eat and drink and to receive a gift.
[4:41] Speaker 2: But the man of God did not go with King
[4:44] Speaker 2: Jeroboam because the Lord told him that he should not
[4:47] Speaker 2: eat or drink while he was there. So the man
[4:50] Speaker 2: of God left and went a different way. Even after
[4:54] Speaker 2: all of this, King Jeroboam did not change his ways.
[4:59] Speaker 2: He kept allowing many kinds of people to become priests
[5:02] Speaker 2: and continued to encourage his people to worship the golden calves.
[5:07] Speaker 2: Because of this sin, King Jeroboam's kingdom was destroyed.
[5:19] Speaker 1: Sounds like Jeroboam, or JB for short, was getting a
[5:23] Speaker 1: little jealous of Rehoboam, or RB. You see, the kingdom
[5:28] Speaker 1: RB ruled, called Judah, was where Jerusalem was. And if
[5:33] Speaker 1: you remember, that's where God's temple was. God had commanded
[5:37] Speaker 1: his people to worship him in his temple in special
[5:41] Speaker 1: ways throughout the year. But JB didn't like the idea
[5:45] Speaker 1: of all his people traveling south to RB's kingdom in
[5:50] Speaker 1: order to worship God. They might decide they liked RB
[5:55] Speaker 1: and his kingdom better. So he decided to start doing
[5:59] Speaker 1: things his own way. He stopped listening to God and
[6:03] Speaker 1: started making idols his people could worship in their kingdom.
[6:08] Speaker 1: Jealousy is a very dangerous thing, isn't it? It's so
[6:12] Speaker 1: easy to see someone that has what you want or
[6:16] Speaker 1: gets more attention than you And feel angry inside. Why
[6:21] Speaker 1: can't I have that? Why don't people like me that way?
[6:25] Speaker 1: Sometimes it gets so bad that we don't want anything
[6:29] Speaker 1: good to happen to whomever we're jealous of. And that
[6:33] Speaker 1: is not a very good place to be. If you
[6:36] Speaker 1: have someone in mind right now that you sometimes feel
[6:39] Speaker 1: jealous of, I'll give you a little tip that helps
[6:43] Speaker 1: a lot. Pray for them. Ask God to change your
[6:48] Speaker 1: attitude and heart towards that person. It's almost impossible to
[6:55] Speaker 1: not like someone that you pray for. Ask God to
[7:00] Speaker 1: protect them and see if it makes a difference. When
[7:04] Speaker 1: you let go of your jealousy and God changes your heart,
[7:08] Speaker 1: you are free to live for Him. And when good
[7:11] Speaker 1: things happen to others, that's just fine with you. Someone
[7:16] Speaker 1: else's success is not your failure. There's room in this
[7:21] Speaker 1: world for all of us to be able to follow
[7:25] Speaker 1: God and live the life that he has for us.
[7:29] Speaker 1: Someone else's success is not your failure. Okay, so next
[7:35] Speaker 1: time we heard about a man of God that came
[7:38] Speaker 1: from Judah to Bethel to give JB an important message.
[7:44] Speaker 1: Why do you think the Bible leaves out his name?
[7:47] Speaker 1: We're not sure. But what if I told you that
[7:51] Speaker 1: we can even learn something from that?
[7:54] Speaker 3: Here it is.
[7:56] Speaker 1: You don't have to be famous with a name everyone
[7:59] Speaker 1: knows to make a big difference for God. It's true.
[8:05] Speaker 1: You don't have to be the smartest, strongest, prettiest, or
[8:09] Speaker 1: coolest person You don't have to be popular or famous
[8:13] Speaker 1: to do something great for God. God loves you and
[8:18] Speaker 1: he thinks you are fantastic. I bet right now somewhere
[8:23] Speaker 1: out there, someone is listening to this podcast today who
[8:26] Speaker 1: is going to serve God in a huge way. In fact,
[8:31] Speaker 1: God invites all of us to serve him in a
[8:34] Speaker 1: huge way. It's up to us to obey and say yes.
[8:40] Speaker 1: God is getting you ready for that big something. You
[8:45] Speaker 1: don't need to worry about people knowing you, winning big awards,
[8:50] Speaker 1: or being the best at everything. All you need to
[8:54] Speaker 1: do is to get to know God more and more.
[8:58] Speaker 1: Spend time with Him and let His Holy Spirit make
[9:02] Speaker 1: you into exactly who He wants you to be. Whenever
[9:07] Speaker 1: you know God, you know everyone you're supposed to know
[9:12] Speaker 1: because God knows everyone. And he can introduce us, have
[9:17] Speaker 1: us become friends with, have us in the same class
[9:21] Speaker 1: with anybody whenever it's in his timing. We're only one
[9:27] Speaker 1: degree away from knowing everyone. So sit back and let
[9:33] Speaker 1: him use you to make his kingdom great. After this,
[9:37] Speaker 1: man of God told J.B. about a boy named Josiah
[9:42] Speaker 1: and a special sign from God. Things got interesting. But
[9:47] Speaker 1: even after J.B. saw the sign from God with his
[9:50] Speaker 1: own eyes and his arm froze in mid air he
[9:55] Speaker 1: continued disobeying God and worshipping idols so just as God
[10:01] Speaker 1: said would happen his kingdom was destroyed and we know
[10:05] Speaker 1: why because when God says something is going to happen
[10:09] Speaker 1: you can count on it JB chose to go his
[10:13] Speaker 1: own way instead of God's way and once again that
[10:18] Speaker 1: never works out too well I wonder if these Israelites
[10:22] Speaker 1: will ever learn. The truth is the same goes for
[10:26] Speaker 1: us most days. Thanks for listening today. Next time the
[10:30] Speaker 1: man with no name is back. But this time he's
[10:34] Speaker 1: meeting a lion and a donkey in the street. And
[10:38] Speaker 1: it's not good. Be sure to come back to hear
[10:42] Speaker 1: all about it. And here we go. The Bible is
[10:47] Speaker 1: the best story ever told. It's God's story to you,
[10:53] Speaker 1: and it's all true. If this podcast brought you joy
[10:57] Speaker 1: and seems like a valuable tool for kids and parents alike,
