[1:12] Speaker 2: David returns to Jerusalem. In our last story, David's servants
[1:18] Speaker 2: defeated Israel and Absalom was stabbed by Joab. Joab then
[1:24] Speaker 2: confronts David's attitude. In this story, David will return to Jerusalem,
[1:30] Speaker 2: and the kingdom will be restored to him. But Sheba
[1:34] Speaker 2: will lead Israel away, as inspired by 2 Samuel.
[1:42] Speaker 1: Hello, friends. It's Julia Sadler, and I'm glad you've joined
[1:46] Speaker 1: me for the Kids Bible in a Year podcast. Should
[1:49] Speaker 1: you go with the flow of everything your friends are doing,
[1:54] Speaker 1: or sometimes are you supposed to do the opposite? That's
[1:57] Speaker 1: the lesson in today's story. Let's listen together and see
[2:01] Speaker 1: what happens when David returns to Jerusalem. And now he
[2:09] Speaker 1: is taking his sweet time before he returns to Jerusalem.
[2:12] Speaker 1: So David sends word, to the.
[2:26] Speaker 2: Elders of Judah to welcome him back. He even sends
[2:30] Speaker 2: word to some of Absalom's troops and commander to come back,
[2:35] Speaker 2: that he wasn't mad at them. As he did this,
[2:38] Speaker 2: he captured all of the hearts in Judah. As he
[2:42] Speaker 2: began his trip back to the palace, he was greeted
[2:45] Speaker 2: by people cheering and clapping, one of which happened to
[2:49] Speaker 2: be Shemi, the relative of Saul. But this time, Shimi
[2:54] Speaker 2: wasn't talking bad about David and hurling rocks, but rather
[2:57] Speaker 2: this time was apologizing and praising David. The next greeter
[3:03] Speaker 2: is Mephisbosheth, who claimed that all of the things Ziba
[3:07] Speaker 2: had said about him were false and that he had
[3:11] Speaker 2: been left there. Not wanting to investigate any further, David
[3:15] Speaker 2: quickly instructed to just split up the property and money
[3:19] Speaker 2: between the two of them. Another man came out to
[3:23] Speaker 2: send off David, and his name was Barzillai, an old
[3:27] Speaker 2: man who took care of David the entire time he
[3:30] Speaker 2: was in Manahiam. Although Barzillai couldn't go with David, he
[3:35] Speaker 2: sent his servant Kimham along with him. As more and
[3:38] Speaker 2: more people were coming back and putting their faith back
[3:41] Speaker 2: in David, another rebellion breaks out. This time, This rebellion
[3:48] Speaker 2: is led by a man named Sheba. Sheba blows his
[3:52] Speaker 2: trumpet to get all of the Israelites to follow him
[3:56] Speaker 2: and get out of Jerusalem.
[4:04] Speaker 1: Wow. Will things ever settle down for the nation of Israel?
[4:08] Speaker 1: As today's story opens, Absalom is dead and David is
[4:13] Speaker 1: king again. Or is he? Well, not exactly. All the
[4:18] Speaker 1: craziness confused the Israelites about what to do next. Not
[4:23] Speaker 1: to mention, David didn't want to force his way back
[4:27] Speaker 1: as king. So he had an idea. He made one
[4:32] Speaker 1: of Absalom's men king, hoping the Israelites would all come
[4:37] Speaker 1: together again and be on the same side. But before
[4:41] Speaker 1: returning to Jerusalem, David hoped the people would want him back.
[4:47] Speaker 1: He hoped God's people would support and follow him again.
[4:51] Speaker 1: And not just some of them, all of them. And
[4:55] Speaker 1: that's just what happened. David once said, For a moment anyway.
[4:58] Speaker 1: David was escorted back to Jerusalem by over a thousand men.
[5:10] Speaker 1: Everyone seemed so happy to have David back. Things felt
[5:14] Speaker 1: right again. That is, until a guy named Sheba showed up.
[5:20] Speaker 1: We don't learn all that much about Sheba other than
[5:24] Speaker 1: he was a rebel and that he turned the ten
[5:28] Speaker 1: tribes of Israel against David. A rebel is someone who
[5:32] Speaker 1: goes directly against whoever is in charge. It's someone who
[5:37] Speaker 1: chooses to do things the opposite way of those who
[5:41] Speaker 1: are in authority. Can you think of anyone else like this?
[5:46] Speaker 1: If you said our enemy Satan, you are right. God's
[5:51] Speaker 1: enemy wanted all his power and glory. So he rebelled
[5:55] Speaker 1: his own way. And as a result, sin entered the
[5:59] Speaker 1: world when he tempted Adam and Eve. But a rebel
[6:04] Speaker 1: can't do much damage unless people follow him. And the
[6:08] Speaker 1: truth is many people choose to follow God's enemy when
[6:13] Speaker 1: they don't do things God's way. It seems so easy
[6:17] Speaker 1: for Sheba to convince the Israelites to desert David and
[6:21] Speaker 1: return to their tents. And most likely, when they saw
[6:25] Speaker 1: everyone moving to Sheba's side, they just followed their friends.
[6:30] Speaker 1: Many times in life, the people around you will choose
[6:34] Speaker 1: to go against God's way. And when many do it
[6:38] Speaker 1: at once, many will follow because it's super easy to
[6:43] Speaker 1: do what everyone else is doing. When you follow the crowd,
[6:47] Speaker 1: you don't get made fun of. You feel important and
[6:50] Speaker 1: accepted and included, and everyone seems happy to you. But
[6:55] Speaker 1: God included a very important piece of information in this passage.
[7:01] Speaker 1: The Bible says that the men of Judah chose to
[7:04] Speaker 1: stay with David. Even though all the Israelites were going
[7:09] Speaker 1: one way, Judah remained loyal to their king. Have you
[7:14] Speaker 1: ever watched fish swimming under the water? Usually they're swimming
[7:19] Speaker 1: in one direction in which the water flows. It's called
[7:23] Speaker 1: going downstream. In life, swimming along with the current and
[7:29] Speaker 1: going with the flow is easy. It doesn't take much
[7:33] Speaker 1: thought and it sure doesn't take much courage. But at
[7:37] Speaker 1: some point, something will happen in which in your heart,
[7:41] Speaker 1: you'll know you need to go against the flow. You
[7:45] Speaker 1: need to start swimming against the current. The high road
[7:50] Speaker 1: can be lonely, but it's always worth it. And there
[7:54] Speaker 1: are always other people who are trying to follow God too.
[7:59] Speaker 1: So pray for friends. Ask God for friends who will
[8:04] Speaker 1: help you do the right thing. And that can help
[8:07] Speaker 1: you stay on track. That just means when everyone else
[8:13] Speaker 1: is doing something that's not right, even when it's everyone
[8:18] Speaker 1: else or it seems like it, you can still go
[8:22] Speaker 1: God's way. Jesus gave us a great picture of what
[8:26] Speaker 1: this means when he talked in Matthew 7 about two
[8:30] Speaker 1: kinds of gates, wide and narrow. He said the wide
[8:35] Speaker 1: gate is so big and easy to go through. He
[8:39] Speaker 1: said that the wide gate is big and easy to
[8:43] Speaker 1: get through. He said that everyone goes that way. But unfortunately,
[8:49] Speaker 1: it leads to destruction. It leads to hell. Jesus said instead,
[8:54] Speaker 1: enter through the narrow or small gate. It might not
[8:59] Speaker 1: seem as fun or as popular, and it might have
[9:03] Speaker 1: a lot fewer people on it, but it leads to life.
[9:07] Speaker 1: It leads to heaven. That's all for today. Thanks for listening,
[9:12] Speaker 1: and be sure to come back next time to hear
[9:15] Speaker 1: about what happened when David got very hungry and God
[9:20] Speaker 1: got very quiet. Let's say it out loud. One, two, three.
[9:27] Speaker 1: The Bible is the best story ever told. It's God's
[9:32] Speaker 1: story to you. And it's all true. Love our podcast?
