[1:26] Speaker 2: Solomon builds the temple of the Lord. In our last story,
[1:32] Speaker 2: Solomon asked the Lord to give him wisdom to rule
[1:36] Speaker 2: his people, and the Lord was pleased to do so.
[1:40] Speaker 2: In this story, Solomon sets out to build a temple
[1:44] Speaker 2: for the Lord, inspired by 1 Kings and 2 Chronicles.
[1:53] Speaker 1: Hey everyone, it's Julia Sadler here. In 20 years.
[2:24] Speaker 2: Solomon built a palace for himself and a temple for God.
[2:29] Speaker 2: The temple was the most important thing Solomon constructed. God
[2:33] Speaker 2: had told Solomon's father, David, that David would have a
[2:37] Speaker 2: son who would be king and that his son would
[2:40] Speaker 2: build the temple. Solomon was king and he was David's son.
[2:45] Speaker 2: Now God was fulfilling his promise to David and Solomon
[2:49] Speaker 2: was fulfilling God's desires. When Solomon first announced he was
[2:54] Speaker 2: building the temple, he told Hiram, the king of Tyre.
[2:58] Speaker 2: King Hiram was a friend of Solomon's father, and Hiram
[3:02] Speaker 2: had helped David build his palace. Solomon decided to build
[3:06] Speaker 2: the temple because his kingdom had no enemies, and they
[3:10] Speaker 2: were in a time of peace. Solomon asked King Hiram
[3:14] Speaker 2: to send over materials and people to help build the temple.
[3:18] Speaker 2: King Hiram was greatly pleased to hear that Solomon was
[3:21] Speaker 2: building a temple for God, and he sent Solomon the
[3:24] Speaker 2: supplies and people to help. Between the Israelites and the
[3:28] Speaker 2: people Hiram sent to help, there were hundreds of thousands
[3:32] Speaker 2: of people contributing to build the temple. Solomon began to
[3:36] Speaker 2: build the temple during the fourth year of his reign.
[3:40] Speaker 2: The temple was built at other sites, and when the
[3:42] Speaker 2: pieces were completed, they were brought to the temple site. Then,
[3:47] Speaker 2: The pieces would be put together. When the temple was completed,
[3:51] Speaker 2: it was magnificent. No stones could be seen inside the
[3:56] Speaker 2: temple because it was covered entirely with cedar wood. The
[4:00] Speaker 2: most important part of the temple was the place called
[4:04] Speaker 2: the Most Holy Place, and inside was entirely covered in gold.
[4:10] Speaker 2: Solomon had so many riches and gold as a king
[4:14] Speaker 2: that even the tools needed and other pieces inside of
[4:17] Speaker 2: the temple were pure gold. Once the temple was completed,
[4:21] Speaker 2: King Solomon summoned all the elders, chiefs, priests, and leaders
[4:26] Speaker 2: from all the tribes of Israel. The last piece Solomon
[4:31] Speaker 2: needed for the new temple was the Ark of God.
[4:35] Speaker 2: While the priests carried up the Ark of God, King
[4:38] Speaker 2: Solomon and the other people sacrificed so much that they
[4:42] Speaker 2: lost count. The Ark of God was placed in the
[4:46] Speaker 2: most holy place, a room covered in pure gold. When
[4:51] Speaker 2: the priests left the most holy place, a great cloud
[4:55] Speaker 2: filled the temple of the Lord. The cloud was God's glory.
[5:00] Speaker 2: His glory was so mighty that the priests could not
[5:04] Speaker 2: perform their duties. After Solomon saw God's glory fill the
[5:08] Speaker 2: temple like a cloud, he blessed the assembly of Israel
[5:13] Speaker 2: and declared to them.
[5:14] Speaker 4: Praise God! He has fulfilled his promise to my father
[5:18] Speaker 4: David by giving me the throne and allowing us to
[5:22] Speaker 4: construct the temple. Praise God!
[5:26] Speaker 2: There was an altar, and at the altar Solomon spread
[5:30] Speaker 2: out his hands to heaven.
[5:32] Speaker 4: Solomon declared a prayer.
[5:33] Speaker 2: Of dedication to God and said, There is no one
[5:38] Speaker 2: like you, God.
[5:39] Speaker 4: You fulfilled your promise. Nothing can contain you, God.
[5:44] Speaker 5: God hears our prayers. Forgive us when we do wrong.
[5:49] Speaker 5: And when we turn away from our sin, teach us
[5:53] Speaker 5: the right way.
[5:54] Speaker 2: When Solomon finished his prayer of dedication, he turned back
[5:58] Speaker 2: to the assembly of Israel and praised God again. For
[6:02] Speaker 2: two weeks, Israel had a festival. And when they finally
[6:06] Speaker 2: went home, they were so joyful. The people were glad
[6:12] Speaker 2: about what God had done for David, Solomon, and Israel.
[6:16] Speaker 2: It took Solomon seven years to complete the temple and
[6:20] Speaker 2: thirteen years after the temple to build his palace. God
[6:24] Speaker 2: appeared to Solomon again and reminded Solomon, As long as.
[6:29] Speaker 5: You follow me, your kingdom will stand. But if you
[6:34] Speaker 5: disobey me, your kingdom will fall.
[6:38] Speaker 2: After that, Solomon continued to rule as the richest and wisest.
[6:43] Speaker 5: King to ever live. Amazing!
[6:53] Speaker 1: What a great day for Israel. But how did they
[6:56] Speaker 1: get here? Remember when David wanted to build God a temple?
[7:01] Speaker 1: A place where his presence would be and his people
[7:04] Speaker 1: could worship him? God told David that it wasn't time yet.
[7:08] Speaker 1: but that David's son would actually be the one to
[7:12] Speaker 1: build the temple. And that time was now. Israel was
[7:16] Speaker 1: in a place of peace with no fighting or enemies
[7:20] Speaker 1: trying to destroy them. And God, like he always does,
[7:25] Speaker 1: kept his promise to David. We heard today how hundreds
[7:29] Speaker 1: of thousands of people brought supplies and helped build the temple.
[7:34] Speaker 1: And when it was finished... It was quite a sight
[7:38] Speaker 1: to see. You could even say it was spectacular to
[7:42] Speaker 1: look at. But the most important part of the temple
[7:46] Speaker 1: was what we call the most holy place or the
[7:50] Speaker 1: holy of holies. It was in that little room where
[7:54] Speaker 1: God's glory would live. Glory. That's a word we hear
[7:59] Speaker 1: a lot. But do we know what it really means?
[8:03] Speaker 1: The Bible says that when God's glory filled the temple
[8:07] Speaker 1: as a great cloud, it was so powerful that the
[8:12] Speaker 1: priests couldn't even do their jobs. It's like everyone froze
[8:17] Speaker 1: in awe and amazement. The word glory actually means worthy
[8:23] Speaker 1: of praise. It feels big, beautiful, and just amazing to see.
[8:30] Speaker 1: It's something that captures your attention and makes you feel
[8:34] Speaker 1: wonderful inside. Now God's glory, that's a whole other story.
[8:40] Speaker 1: God's glory is so big and awesome that it's hard
[8:44] Speaker 1: to describe in words. His glory is really his character,
[8:49] Speaker 1: who he is, and his incredible love that can sometimes
[8:54] Speaker 1: overwhelm us. But the fullness of God's glory is something
[8:59] Speaker 1: you won't experience until you get to heaven one day.
[9:03] Speaker 1: And when you do, you won't believe how amazing it is.
[9:09] Speaker 1: When Solomon blessed the people and dedicated the temple to
[9:12] Speaker 1: the Lord, he was sure to remind everyone of God's glory.
[9:17] Speaker 1: He reminded the people that this was not about the
[9:20] Speaker 1: king or the people or David or anyone else, but
[9:25] Speaker 1: God alone. Even though Solomon was the one who organized
[9:30] Speaker 1: and built the temple with lots of help, he knew
[9:34] Speaker 1: that God deserved all the glory. That's something we should
[9:38] Speaker 1: never forget. Sometimes in life, it's easy to want glory
[9:43] Speaker 1: for yourself. If you score the winning goal, receive loud
[9:48] Speaker 1: applause for your solo, or get a super great report card,
[9:53] Speaker 1: it's easy to think it's all because of you. But
[9:57] Speaker 1: in those times, remember King Solomon. He was the wisest
[10:02] Speaker 1: and the richest king of all time. Yet he stopped
[10:07] Speaker 1: to tell everyone that it was nothing he had done.
[10:11] Speaker 1: It was all because of God. As today's story ends,
[10:16] Speaker 1: I just love the picture of Solomon spreading his hands
[10:19] Speaker 1: to heaven at the altar and saying with great passion,
[10:25] Speaker 1: There is no one like you, God. Can you just
[10:29] Speaker 1: see it? And after all that excitement, no wonder Israel
[10:34] Speaker 1: wanted to have a party for two whole weeks. They
[10:38] Speaker 1: were so joyful and grateful to God for keeping his promise.
[10:43] Speaker 1: When we focus on God and the fact that he
[10:45] Speaker 1: is right here with us, we find joy. Solomon then
[10:50] Speaker 1: built his palace and God once again whispered a very
[10:54] Speaker 1: important reminder to the king. As long as you follow me,
[10:59] Speaker 1: your kingdom will stand. Thanks for listening today. Don't miss
[11:04] Speaker 1: next time to hear what's happening when Solomon gets a
[11:08] Speaker 1: little too popular. and steps out of God's big, giant umbrella.
[11:14] Speaker 1: You'll see what I mean. And don't forget, the Bible
[11:18] Speaker 1: is the best story ever told. It's God's story to you,
[11:23] Speaker 1: and it's all true. If this podcast brought you joy
[11:27] Speaker 1: and seems like a valuable tool for kids and parents alike,
